It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Despite drawing blanks in his last two outings, Harry Kane (27%) attracted the largest backing ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s home tie against Newcastle United. Although the Magpies pulled out an eye-catching win over Liverpool last time out, they still rank top in terms of goals conceded (30) throughout the course of the campaign. In addition, Kane has displayed a propensity for explosive returns during his fledgling career, notching two or more goals on seven occasions.

Romelu Lukaku occupies second spot with a 23% share of the vote. The Everton marksman currently places second in the overall scoring charts (11 goals), having netted in his last five starts. No side has managed fewer clean sheets than Norwich City (one), so there’s every chance Lukaku will perpetuate his streak when Everton make the trip to Carrow Road. Given that the Merseysiders carded eight goals in the previous three Gameweeks, Ross Barkley (1%) also finds a spot in our top ten.

The favourable nature of Manchester City’s home tie against managerless Swansea finds Kevin de Bruyne (17%) among the top three. The Sky Blues are out of sorts on their travels right now but remain a formidable force at the Etihad, having tallied six more home goals (23) than any other team. As such, David Silva (2%) – who scored a searing strike in midweek – serves as a viable differential pick.

Just over 8% of voters were swayed by Mesut Ozil’s consistency, considering that he hasn’t failed to deliver attacking returns since Gameweek 6. Playing behind a buoyant Olivier Giroud – who bagged a hat-trick in midweek – the German playmaker will be afforded short odds to register his 13th assist against a floundering Aston Villa side. Elsewhere in the Gunners camp, Aaron Ramsey’s switch to a central berth convinced just over 1% of voters to hand him the skipper’s armband.

Riyad Mahrez (3%) is the pick of Leicester’s much-vaunted duo ahead of their home encounter against Chelsea. The Blues rearguard posted four clean sheets in their last five fixtures across all competitions, ensuring that Jamie Vardy has dropped off the radar in our Captain Poll.

Odion Ighalo (3%) places third among forwards for total score (96) by virtue of his nine goals and five assists. The Watford frontman has drawn just three blanks since Gameweek 5 and will be relishing the opportunity to tackle Sunderland’s inconsistent defence at the Stadium of Light.

I thought long and hard about it Trigg. Wasnt even that bothered about playing Stanislas this week...BUT risk of Kane exploding is too high, esp as lots of my rivals have him. Aguero prob back for Arsenal - but then arguably you'd prefer Kane at sot anyway. Assuming he comes back fine, then pencil in for SUN in GW18.

It hurts (as i took a -8) to get him, but swallowing pride.

How much of a concern is Giroud's lack of bonus?

Despite scoring 8 goals he has never scored more than 7 points this season. When compared to other strikers with a similar number of goals, his bonus is simply terrible:

    Ighalo - 9 goals, 18 bonus
    Lukaku - 11 goals, 16 bonus
    Kane - 8 goals, 12 bonus
    Giroud - 8 goals, 4 bonus

Even the likes of Zarate and Bojan have double the bonus points (8) of Giroud.

Like many, I'm looking for an Aguero replacement this week, and on the back of his hat trick in midweek and now being on pens, Giroud does seem like the obvious choice for those of us already owning Kane and Lukaku.

However, his inability to hit double digit scores combined with the fact that Giroud uses up an ARS attacking slot (and with options like Ozil, Sanchez, Ramsey and Walcott all looking viable), perhaps this means Giroud isn't the way to go.

Where are you on the Giroud subject - get or avoid?

Same dilemma and my apprehensions are:

      a) Takes up an Arsenal spot as you say
      b) Rotation with Walcott

Thanks for bringing up the bonus points concern as well. I also think his goals can be 'covered' if you have Ozil and another mid.

I own both Kompany and Smalling. Which one shall I take out for Toby?

    Thanks.

Really struggling with this decision, apologies for asking again. I own Ozil & KDB. Which to go for.

    A) Ramsey
    B) Silva
    C) Sterling
    D) Theo

I'm leaning towards one of the City boys because of their home games against SWA and SUN over the next 3. Better than villa & southampton away

It's a really difficult decision this, and one I am also trying to figure out.

I expect this to oppose many other opinions, but I currently have it as Ramsey > Sterling > Silva > Walcott all things considered.

Ramsey is the cheapest and most assured of minutes and offers a very decent goal threat from centre midfield. I'm a huge Walcott fan, but he's only played 90 mins once this season and will be a big rotation risk once Sanchez is back, imo. Silva just doesn't offer the goal threat of the other 3, and despite him being the best actual player of the 4, I don't think he's the best fpl option of the 4, especially given he is by far the most expensive.

Thank you. You've sold me Ramsey there.

Keep Hazard or bring in Silva with a FT?
