Sergio Aguero returns to training ahead of City’s trip to the Emirates. Arsenal players are handed a mini-break prior to Monday’s match, Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren is sidelined for around three weeks, whilst Leighton Baines reckons he’s nearing full match sharpness.

Aguero Steps Up Recovery

Sergio Aguero returned to training on Tuesday and is expected to make the matchday squad for Man City’s trip to Arsenal on Monday.

The Scout Says: The Argentine’s imminent return presents Fantasy managers with some tough decisions. Although there’s no denying that Aguero, on his day, is the most explosive Fantasy option around, as evidenced by City’s team sheet last weekend, Manuel Pellegrini will be keen to rest and rotate over the Christmas period – all the more so given that Monday’s match at Arsenal is the first of eight fixtures in 26 days for the Etihad side. Bearing in mind that he’s featured just twice since Gameweek 8, it seems certain that the Chilean won’t take too many risks with his star striker and with a price tag of 13.0, some will be reluctant to draft Aguero back in immediately. City’s form on the road may also act as a deterrent, considering they have scored just once in their last four away matches and face three road trips in the next four Gameweeks (ars, SUN, lei, wat).

Lovren Sidelined for Reds

Dejan Lovren is set for a three-week spell on the sidelines as a result of the knee gash he sustained against West Brom at Anfield on Sunday. Although scans confirmed the Croatian suffered no ligament damage from Craig Gardener’s hefty challenge, he isn’t expected to return to action until the New Year.

The Scout Says: Fortunately for Liverpool, Lovren’s absence coincides with Mamadou Sakho’s excepted return from a knee complaint that saw him sit out the last four Gameweeks. The former was much maligned for his mistake-ridden start to the campaign but, by most accounts, has steadied the ship of late. Nonetheless, Sakho should be afforded the opportunity to strengthen his grip on a starting berth over a favourable Christmas schedule (wat, LEI, sun, whu) and, at a price of just 4.7, serves as the cheapest route into their rearguard. Regardless, Alberto Moreno (5.0) – who’s chalked up seven more key passes (31) than any defender this term – represents a stronger option than Sakho by virtue of his greater attacking potential, despite producing just one assist thus far.

Gunners Handed Mini-Break

In light of the fact that Arsenal play on Monday and have no midweek fixtures on their agenda, the Gunners chief protagonists have been afforded a mini holiday this week. In addition, reports suggest that Arsene Wenger intends to possibly rest Mesut Ozil for one of the four matches over the Christmas period to avoid him aggravating a minor calf niggle.

The Scout Says: Beyond a home tie against Manchester City at the start of next week and a trip to Southampton on Boxing Day, the Gunners embark on back-to-back home clashes (BOU, NEW). Although Wenger has made no comment, the local press suggest that Ozil – who felt tightness in his calf following Arsenal’s 3-0 triumph over Olympiacos – could drop out for one of these match-ups as his manager looks to steer him clear of injury over the festive spell. Should the reports prove accurate, it only further serves to highlight the importance of strong benches across the winter period. As alluded to above, Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to rest regulars Aleksandar Kolarov and Kevin De Bruyne at home to Swansea last time out was proof positive of that notion, whilst Jamie Vardy’s 56% FPL owners will need to strengthen their back-up options should the Leicester striker fall off the Suspension Tightrope by accruing a fifth caution in any of Leicester’s next three outings.

Cazorla Issues Injury Update

Santi Cazorla admitted that his knee surgery could sideline for four months – one month longer than his initial prognosis. That being said, the Spain international is still determined to recover in time for a trip to the Nou Camp in mid-March:

“I am trying to take it well. These are the things that happen in football and I am trying to recover as soon as possible. I have to be ready mentally to work and hopefully I can shorten the recovery time as much as possible. I do not want to set a time but I want to play in three months. I do not want to extend it more if it is possible. Arsenal have told me it will be between three and four months, which may be closer to four. I have already said that I will work hard, I want to make everything I can to play in March but we will see how it goes. We are not going to force it if is going to be bad. But my priority is to play in March. I hope so. The important thing is that the team do well and I recover as soon as possible.”

The Scout Says: In the wake of long-term injuries to Cazorla and Francis Coquelin, keeping Aaron Ramsey healthy looks imperative to Arsenal’s success in the coming months. Since dropping back into the double pivot, the ex-Cardiff City recruit has instantly emerged as a prime pick-up in the mid-priced (8.1) bracket, recording two goals and one assist in a pair of outings. Further supporting Ramsey’s assertion that he’s more suited to a central role, the Wales international ranks top among midfielders for attempts (10) and joint-second for shots on target (four) over the past two Gameweeks. Although Ozil is currently the choice source of Arsenal coverage and Alexis Sanchez is closing in on a return to action, Ramsey’s value and goal threat make for an enticing concoction ahead of the upcoming three home fixtures in four.

Baines Almost Pain Free

Having come through his first start of the season against Norwich City unscathed, Leighton Baines believes that he’s approaching full fitness:

“By the time I played behind closed doors I was still a little bit more restricted than I would have liked. When I played for the 21s I’d had a bit of swelling from a few days before. As much as you want to do more, you might get a reaction, so it’s been about striking a balance, getting the work and not a reaction. This last 10 days or so I’ve felt great, everything I’ve done there has been no reaction and I’m close to being pain free. I’m in a positive place.”

The Scout Says: Despite dropping by 0.4 since the start of the campaign, Baines still comes in at a prohibitive 6.1 on the Fantasy market. Although that represents great value if he can showcase his attacking talents, few managers will be willing to take the plunge so soon after a lengthy lay-off. Furthermore, the fact that Romelu Lukaku ranks above the Merseyside native in the penalty hierarchy greatly diminishes the latter’s appeal. Ultimately, it’s currently hard to justify investment in an Everton backline that chalked up just two clean sheets in their past 10 outings and next faces a Foxes outfit that hasn’t drawn a single blank this term. Baines’ would-be suitors will be hoping the imminent return of Phil Jagielka can shore up the Toffees’ leaky defence and boost his points potential.

Decent table for Away Attacking Returns. Its for the whole season as there isn't away you can set it to just the last 4 or 6 away games, I think.

He's currently the 6th most transferred in player this week (after Dann, Alderweireld, Wijnaldum, Lukaku and Ighalo).

He is also the second highest owned goalkeeper (after Cech), and changing goalkeepers is usually not the highest priority, especially when we are trying to make sure we have 15 active players in order to deal with the Christmas rotations.

      Three striker related questions..

      1) Can Ighalo keep going with his fixtures?

      2) Is Vardy still as good an option or is he slowing down? Can Mahrez cover him?

      3) With Alli having a negative effect on Kane, but with Harry still getting shots on target (albeit from outside the box) and with a run of decent fixtures incoming, would you prefer Kun or Kane?

Can several hits at the beginning of the holiday period go a long way during the period?

E.g. Is this is the best time to regain momentum and maybe a couple of transfers at once can steer our rocking ships to safety?

From the previous three season , I remember that this period of time was the most crucial to how my season turned out, so just curious if this is something others see as well or is it only me?

Because it was Mahrez at home (he's been better away).
He was playing Chelsea, who looked resilient and impressive midweek v Porto.

And the only player I could bench for him were Silva/KdB and that's more about me being too scared to bench 10m and not going with my gut.

Unless Chelsea win spectacularly I'm not even considering their assets. If Mourinho stays in charge, I'd wait til the transfer window opens , as once he starts chopping and changing they could turn it around. If he gets sacked I'd start considering them as well.

Not a question as such but just pointing out a bit of research I did on Ighalo that fello site members might find interesting with so many of us looking to bring him in/play him over Christmas.

I’ve seen a lot on here about ‘Form over Fixtures’ in the last couple of days so wanted to find out more about Ighalo before using my FT to ship out Kane.

There have been 8 games where Ighalo has scored and 8 games Ighalo has failed to score this season.

      Goals Scored:
      EVE
      SWA
      NEW
      BOU
      WHU
      AVL
      NOR
      SUN

      Failed to Score:
      WBA
      SOU
      MCI
      CRY
      ARS
      STK
      LEI
      MUN

Now I’ve not done any further research into things like e.g. goals conceded or shots conceded in the box but to me it’s clear that Ighalo isn’t scoring against stronger defences.

With LIV,CHE ,TOT and MCI next up I’ve decided I won’t be going Ighalo.

breaking the templates. Jonty wrote something last year about how to play once the templates had been set depending on your ranking. It was probably a bit later in the season but is it relevant now?

What is the maximum number of template players you should have before it becomes boring?
From an FPL point of view Monday was dull once Hazard went off due to the massive ownership of Vardy/Mahrez. In terms of ranking didn't really matter what they did as weren't big captaincy picks and have such huge ownership.

Both more expensive which WILL be a factor when Kun and Sanchez return, hence value.

Btw - look at Wolly's BPS - he certainly gets his fair share. I got 8 pts from him last week which isnt too shabby for a 4.4m unfashionable (differencial) defender. Just sayin'.

Is it time to get Mahrez to stop rank drops, for the small majority that don't have him. I had him for just 3 weeks all season and had goodish rank 3 weeks ago 100k. However with his hauls last two weeks I've dropped to over 300k. The same tactic could be applied to non ozil,Lukaku owners.

Is this the week to fill your squad for Xmas period?

Either saving transfer or getting rid of deadwood for the Xmas schedule could be important.

Some people hate benching headaches but I will prefer to have a decent squad with points on bench over Xmas rather than possibility of 10 men in a GW.

For sure. In these circumstances it is possible to have strong front 8, and good 4 defenders.

I think that'll be important to predict who'll be rester, like KDB last week, in case that player eventually comes off the bench and spoils autosub.

Yep that's what I am doing. Bringing in Ramsey and will have to bench someone strong but don't mind it like that.

In mid January I will take a big hitting midfielder out for a bench fodder (not a Westwood, someone like Stanislas) and upgrade to Kun up top.

That's the genius plan anyway 😉

Which players do you get to break into the top 10-50k ranks? Differentials like Aguero and Sturridge have failed in recent weeks due to injury right after coming back and others like Mane, Delofeo, Wij, Giroud aren't doing enough to keep up with template players. It has become frustrating to climb up i recent weeks even when having good GWs. Are Arsenal mids (Ramsey,Walcott and Sanchez) our best bet? Or are defenders (Stoke and Palace for example) the real differentials?

Rough: .. 29p... only vardy and ighalo points.. Transfered smalling in to field only 2 defenders and captained KDB.. Questions rising from my transferanalysis under.

Time to captain " cheap" forwards?
Is it still right to admin your mistake and jump on özil and/or mahrez, or christmass making it toi latr with rotation and fatique worries?
Is doubling on leicester now essential? (grand for someone if you knew that would be a Real question pre season)
Is it still alright to make not boring, risky transfers?
Is this year as swingy to others as well ( 4gw, 500k->97k->500k)?

So i decided to take a look back at my transfers, my other main options and how it panned out.. This is my transfers, good, bad and ugly

      Good ( Strikers)
      GW3: WC:
Vardy in ( PROFIT, didn't want to get mahrez, only striker option)
Keep Wilson ( Profit, might have upgraded, which would have been kinda bad, don't think i would have got lukaku)
Keep Kun (Ok, got the points in the end)
Gw 8 Wilson to ighalo ( Profit, no real other options)
Gw 10 Kun to Kane C ( Hatty, profit for first weeks at least, lukaku as option would have been about as good)

      Bad ( Middlefield)
      GW 3 WC:
Sanches in ( had 5 good middlefielders, was too greedy to downgrade him to özil, would have done many good and some bad upgrades, would have saved atleast 3 transfers)
Mata in (good first weeks, ok-ish for now)
Payer in ( would have been good...)
Barkley (Ok good, because I benhed him wrong 1 time)
Silva in ( neutral, injury in 2 gws, making it bad)

      GW 5
Silva -> KDB (Came good, though first (Bench barkley 9p) and last (C 1p) gameweek bad)
Payet .> Ayew (Bad.. Should just have kept, but swansea looked so good agaist united..)
      GW 6 (Kneejerk tilt)
Sanchez-> Shaqiri ( To updgrade defence, other options mahrez or payet(the safe versions) would have been great, keeping would have been better aswell)
GW7 Ayew -> Oscar ( Chelsea can't be that bad for ever, right? could have got mahrez or payet as well for safe option..)
GW9 Shaqiri to mane ( Could have got özil as safer option to cover arsenal..)
Gw 11 Oscar to Sanchez (Had already once pressed button to get özil, connection error and got change of hearth.. (2nd transfer initial özil instead would have saved)
gw 14 Mane -> coutinho ( haven't done much yet.. could have been scared of injury and got özil or mahrez as safer option..)
Gw 15 Sanchez to willian ( Chelsea must come good, safer transfers would have been özil, ramsey or mahrez, all of which i considered., 3rd transfer that could have been saved.. 0.3 lost for waiting to figure out who diffenrential to get..)

      And the ugly (Defence)

      GW 3 ( WC)
Richards in (could have upgraded, if had money, okeish bench fodder with once delivering)
Gomez in ( would have been kolarov/kompany if i had money)
Muniesa in (could have been some other stoke defender, was told he was most nailed on.. only 6 cs lost, 3 of which atleast would have been played aswell)
Mings in ( could have been francis or other 4.5 if had money, risk not worth taking)
Darmian keep (good for many weeks)
Butland to mccarthy (Okish for a while, wouldn't have kept long enaught anyway)
      Keep Schmeichel (Okish)

      Gw 6 TIlt
Mings to kolarov ( some 15 points since.. could have kept my head and not get city defender, point hit taken)
Schmeichel to degea (Good/ok, happy for now as manu fan)
gw 9 Muniesa to janmaat ( if had playing stoke defender, no transfer needed/could have got rid of gomez sooner.. ok, but not good
gw 12 Gomez to cedric (some money lost, .1 sort of bertand who has got twice as many points so far..)
gw 14 Darmian to morena (happy for now)
gw 16 Cedric to smalling (for christmass be4 championsleageu.. played only 2 defender thanks to kolarov and richards injury.. hope he gets fell soon..

All in all, if I had been jonty and played it safe and not too greedy i would have done much better.. And admiting mistakes and jumpin on board on second wave have been the way to go this year.. And clearly i should C cheap forwords way more often

      liv 1 cs in 7
      chel 3 cs all season
      spurs 1 cs in 7
      city 2 cs in 11
      sou 1 cs in 11
so i will be holding igahlo at least to see how he fares, no good ditching a 6 mill player on 10 goals and 5 assists on fixtures yet, kane not scored in last 3,which to ditch ?
fixturescaught people out so far, dropping players who get unexpected cs goals etc, then the ones brought in for easier fixtures do nothing,
      people brought in liv players for new an wbrom game {so called easy fixtures}
tot players for new game{kane most cap !} many left mahrez on bench as thought chelsea would be tough... what makes footy and fantasy footy so interesting, and frustrating, good luck

    With these front 8:

De Bruyne Silva Özil Mahrez Fletcher
    Aguero Vardy Lukaku

Would you swap one of KDB or Silva to Ramsey, or possibly Henderson?

Are there any other changes you would make? 1FT, 0.9 in the bank.

That comment about feeling betrayed nailed his coffin.

He raised those players to a higher level more than their level.

What does that say to you?

              A) He can't get them to that level anymore.
              B) The players playing for him.

Ancelotti was offered the Zenit job was he not?

I'd hold Kane for a couple of weeks (NOR GW18), then use some of the 6.8m to bring in Kun. Use what's left to bulk up the bench.

I did Aguero > Giroud as a one week punt last week. 90% certain I'll be doing Kane > Aguero now. Might give Kane one more week as Aguero has Arsenal away, but also because I have a certain waste of space by the name of Firminio to get rid of too.

    Alright men,

Is it suggestible for me to do Kane > Aguero this week (bearing in mind it's Arsenal away) or should I dump Firmino flat on his arse first? Lukkaku and Giroud are my other strikers, btw.

I think you're right. Getting rid of Firminio is a much more pressing matter. Just not sure if I should go all out and get a 9.2 midfielder in for Firminio (meaning I have to dump kane if I want to get Aguero in the following week) or a 8.5 midfielder that would give me the option of dumping Giroud.

    Butland (Mccarthy)

    Dawson Azpi Moreno (Bellerin Kolarov)

I think your defense is hugelly overpriced. For now its ok because bargains (ighalo, vardy, mahrez, barkley) are paying off unlike previous years.

Why not slot in Aguero in the future?

      - I would swap kolarov for someone else, poor performance and rotation risk (spurs defender?)

Thanks for your response. I have been thinking for a while I need to downgrade my defence. As you say with bargains paying off I have constantly had plenty of money ITB so it hasnt been a pressing issue. With Sanchez and Aguero coming back I will put this to use and the extra I need I will use from downgrading my defence.

Any ideas as to which defenders to play?
