Having broken down the teams who face the most favourable upcoming schedules yesterday, our focus now shifts to those sides who could struggle over the festive period. Fantasy points may be hard to come by for in-form Watford, whilst Sunderland and Everton also brace themselves for a tough run of upcoming matches.

Watford

frisking

With the three teams visiting Vicarage Road over the coming period all strong defensive sides, it is possible that we’ll see some regression in the output of Odion Ighalo (6.0) and Troy Deeney (5.2) over the next few weeks. Tottenham and Liverpool feature among the four clubs allowing the fewest number of shots from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, while should Vincent Kompany return to fitness by Gameweek 20, goals could also be hard to come by against Man City. The three away matches (che, sot, swa) are also less than favourable, so while the two forwards are in great form and offer outstanding value, further double-digit scores appear less likely over the next six Gameweeks.

Likewise, it’s hard to see Watford adding significantly to the seven clean sheets they’ve registered so far this term. Liverpool, Tottenham and City will all be expected to notch against the Hornets, while although Chelsea, Southampton and Swansea have only scored seven times between them over the last four Gameweeks, there’d be no real surprise if they also got amongst the goals. The likes of Heurelho Gomes (4.7), Allan Nyom (4.6) and Nathan Ake (4.4) all offer outstanding value though, and should start the vast majority of matches over the busy festive period, so they certainly are worth holding onto as “bench fodder” despite the tough schedule. Ake, of course, cannot play against Chelsea in Gameweek 18 anyway, due to the conditions of his loan deal.

Everton

frisking

The Toffees have been in fine scoring form of late, managing 16 goals over the last six Gameweeks. With Leicester having only conceded twice in their last four matches, and Stoke keeping clean sheets in seven of their last nine, maintaining that impressive record could prove difficult. Tottenham and Chelsea also feature among the four teams allowing the fewest number of shots from inside the box over the last four Gameweeks, while a trip to the Etihad will also be very testing. Those that have doubled up with Romelu Lukaku (9.2) and one of Ross Barkley (7.4) or Gerard Deulofeu (6.4) may look to move on one of their Everton attacking assets, then, with only the trip to Newcastle in Gameweek 18 looking reasonably favourable.

Roberto Martinez’ side have only managed one clean sheet in their last 10 matches, and up against strong attacking teams such as Leicester, Tottenham and City, it’s hard to see members of the Toffees providing enough defensive points to justify their hefty price tags. With Leighton Baines (6.1) now back to full fitness, John Stones and Ramiro Funes Mori are the cheapest starting defenders at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Seamus Coleman (5.9) has been the stand-out performer of late, with two assists in four, though given the other three fixtures on the upcoming slate (new, STO, che) aren’t overly favourable, the Toffees’ defence could remain off the radar.

Sunderland

frisking

The Black Cats are another side who only face two home match-ups over the next six Gameweeks, and while the clash against Aston Villa is very favourable, the fixture against Liverpool is a little less straightforward. With Chelsea, City and Tottenham all to face on the road, the upside to owning a member of the Sunderland backline looks pretty limited over the festive period. Perhaps the attacking threat of Patrick van Aanholt (4.6) makes the Dutchman worth holding onto if Sam Allardyce continues to play with wing-backs, but barring the left-sided defender, it could be slim pickings for Black Cats defenders over the next month.

As already touched upon, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham are among the strongest defences at the moment when it comes to limiting opposition attacks. This leaves only the showdowns against Villa and Swansea in Gameweeks 20 and 21 as good match-ups, though the Welsh side could be a different proposition by then under a new manager.

Be Wary Of…

Leicester
The Foxes may be continuing to thrive during the toughest part of their schedule, but with only two home matches in their next six (MCI, BOU), the festive period remains pretty tricky. Of the four away trips (eve, liv, tot, avl), only the match at Villa Park looks favourable, so while Jamie Vardy (7.6) and Riyad Mahrez (6.9) are “must haves” based on form, it appears possible they may blank from time-to-time over the next month or so.

The Leicester defence has been much improved of late, conceding just two goals in their last four matches. With Bournemouth one of the leading attacking sides at present, though, it’s only the Villa fixture in Gameweek 22 that looks a decent possibility for a clean sheet over the upcoming period. Foxes defenders should be consigned to the bench for the next couple of weeks, then.

Liverpool
Defensive returns could be in short supply for the Reds over the next six Gameweeks, with their three home fixtures (LEI, ARS, MUN) looking very tough. Keeping Odion Ighalo off the scoresheet on Sunday could also prove difficult, leaving only the trips to Sunderland and West Ham as reasonably strong opportunities for clean sheets The price tag and possibility of attacking points means the owners of Alberto Moreno (5.0) should certainly hold tight, but beyond the Spaniard, there isn’t much upside in owning any other member of the Liverpool backline.

From an attacking point of view, the fixtures against Arsenal and Man United are unfavourable, but in the short term the prospects look fairly bright, despite Watford and Leicester proving stubborn opponents over the last few weeks. With plenty of rotation expected at Anfield over the festive period, it’s perhaps only Philippe Coutinho (8.5) who is likely to capture the interest of Fantasy bosses.

Man City
With trips to Arsenal, Leicester and Watford over the next four, clean sheets could be scarce for Manuel Pellegrini’s men. The home clash against Sunderland in Gameweek 18 does offer some respite, but with rotation also likely to be a factor in the City back four when Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta return to full fitness, City’s premium defenders could struggle to deliver sufficient points to justify their price tags, with home matches against Everton and Palace in the New Year also potential banana skins.

City have failed to score in their last three away matches, and up against some strong defences on the road over the festive period, there are concerns regarding the prospects of the likes of Kevin De Bruyne (10.9) and Sergio Aguero (13.0), with the Argentine expected to be back in action sooner rather than later. The three home matches (SUN, EVE, CPL) are pretty favourable though, so most FPL bosses will be happy to roll with one City attacking asset over the next four Gameweeks. Pellegrini’s decision to bench De Bruyne against Swansea suggests we need to brace ourselves for further festive rotation in the final third.

Currently Azpi, Moreno and Nyom but considering playing Francis over Nyom

I feel Kolarov will start nonetheless. If a team sets out to defend against this Arsenal squad with the form Ozil is in, it will result in a disaster. City have to attack Arsenal from the go.

They don't have to set out to defend with Clichy, just be better at defending.. Not bothering to defend much at all is the problem with Kolarov at times.

Yup. Fair point there. Just feel that Kolarov is the undisputed No.1 right now, with Clichy getting minutes a few times. Against a top team in the League looks like Kolarov will play. We'll all find out this week. 🙂

It's compounded with Silva playing. He's not the best at defending either (if he plays on that side sometimes). Kolarov with Silva in front of him is a bit rubbish at times against quick attackers.

So at least he has shown a little pretension of trying? Good for him! Not good enough though, he still does virtually nothing in defence, and even when he tries to defend, he's mostly just useless.

When your left back is sometimes higher up the pitch than your LW, maybe that's the problem. Kolarov has no positional sense. The man was born to be a LM.

Sure Kolarov is the main problem, and Clichy is times better exactly because he's excellent defender and still able to make the runs to come and help in the attack. But it still doesn't help that Sterling is pretty useless in defence too. City has got too many players of that type.

Clichy LB Kolarov LM has always seemed like a good option to me. Maybe the best City actually can have. It's unfortunate they don't use it more often.

Maybe. But does it really hurt that much when the LB behind him is one of the fastest players on planet and takes really good care of his defensive duties? Is Kolarov's relative lack of pace really their biggest worry then?

This is City's real big problem: their attacking midfielders are useless in defence, and even the other "defensive" mostly has his mind in attack (Yaya).

And Yaya in front of them. Then Navas on right, your probably most disciplined and best defending attacking midfielder. Leaves you with only one of KDB/Silva, and no Sterling, but you know what, maybe it's just stupid to try and fit Silva, KDB, Sterling and Yaya in same midfield. 2 of them is good enough.

Yaya is the best player in that midfield. Either build around him or sell him.

I honestly think we should sell him. He's too on and off. In the bigger games I'd be starting Fernandinho, Delph, Navas, Silva and Sterling and then subbing based on what goes on.

In big games Yaya is often your only working plan. You destroy the small teams with or without him, but he's the go to guy when you play the big boys.

Even then, surely not the last 2 seasons he has been on a steady decline

Sterling not tactical enough to play on the left flank, leave that to KDB/Silva, he needs to be on his natural right side.

                            My ideal City lineup is:

Has been doing this season yeah...but he seems to drag him off or bench him of late. Just saying the worst defensive set up for City is down that side, against quality teams, if they end up with Kolarov and Silva in front of him...or behind him when he goes on the attack.

It's definitely more in Silva/Sterling/Kolarov. You can completely play with Yaya and Fernando/Fernandinho, but you cannot field Silva, Sterling, KDB and Kolarov in same team, and yet with Yaya and Kun, without making yourself extremely vulnerable. Against good attacking sides, that's a Kamikaze plan.

I remember us using a similar lineup against Barcelona and we had at least nine 3 on 1s against us. It's a terrible strategy against good teams..

I cant say I agree with you. Top teams in the world manage to have great defences inspite of playing 4-5 attacking players

Because those attacking players also defend and know how to do it. Just look at City's losses against Real, Bayern and Dortmund. It always struck me as the main difference how the attacking players such as Ribéry, Lewandowski, Benzema, even Ronaldo do their defensive task in such a big games, excellent pressing, disciplined team game, particularly Müller and Ribéry tracking back immensely well, and how City's Silva, Nasri, Kun and fellows were completely useless in that respect. City is too weak in that sense. You can have one Robben or Walcott in your team, a guy who just waits for attacks and hardly ever comes to defence or can do anything there, but not 5 of them.

It can well be a question of team organisation, as for example Nasri was known as a good defensive player before he joined City. But I doubt it's just that, because the players have been the same for ages now, and managers have changed, and the problem remains the same.

Exactly Camp No No! It can be a working system but only if everyone pitches in. There's only a few games where City have played like that and they've been superb. The games against Roma and Sevilla in UCL were prime examples. The players need to work harder and cover positions better. Guardiola would drill this into them.

I hate to say this, but even in those matches the quality of the opponent has hidden your lacks: Roma and Sevilla simply are not strong enough attacking units to really test you. You can control the game much more against them. When it's Real or Bayern or I'd suppose PSG or Barcelona, you just can no more and then that lack of capacity to a high class team defence starts to cost you. Maybe if Roma and Sevilla dared to try and dominate the game against you, but I suspect they'd be found out and punished on counter soon enough.

But you're also right in that some manager might be able to make these players do that job. Guardiola has coached defensive discipline to players like Iniesta and Messi. It doesn't always ask you to be a great tackler, pressing happens mostly between players. Important is to keep that solid organisation.

Well, we may see that soon, if and when Guardiola takes over at City next summer.

I've always said that if a team dared to attack City, they'd probably win. We're woeful defensively. No one attacks because they fear our offense taking advantage of the spaces. Teams like Barca and such don't care though, and that's why they run riot. We're a joke defensively.

Sometimes I find these fixture articles very odd indeed. I would argue that Everton's short term fixtures remain very good. I'm personally looking to keep their assets until GW21.

Also I find it odd that we're told to be wary about Manchester City's fixtures. Once the Arsenal away game is out of the way their fixtures look ideal for investment.

Leicester and Watford have stinking fixtures though!

        Dear Arsene Wenger:

Please refrain from playing Alexis this weekend and hold the urge bringing him back prematurely. Let his muscles and other soft tissues heal completely in order to prevent a possible re-injury. Arsenal have been playing well without him and don't need him this weekend. Have you not learned anything regarding injuries the last 20 years? Think long-term buddy. I appreciate your time.

        Regards,

Repost sorry... got a bit lost.

        Butland
        Kolorov, Toby, Moreno,
        Ozil, Mahrez, Barkley, KDB,
        Vardy, Kane and Lukaku

        Panty, Huth, Cedric, Wanyama

Huth is suspended so I could take the opportunity to get in a better cheapo defender. Other players I'd be looking to ship out are Barkley and possibly Kane (although I don't see a better option because I think I've missed the Ighalo-wagon). Other option of course is to just stick and use 2FT next week to make sure my team isn't exposed to too much danger of a rest over Chimbo. So...

        1) Swap out Huth?
        2) Ship Barkley to, say, Wijnaldum?
        3) Save?
        4) Something else...

Rest of my front 8 is Barkley Ozil Mahrez Silva, Vardy Lukaku Kane so I could do Mane > Stanislas to free up Aguero funds.

But suddenly I'm thinking of holding and playing vs Spurs and Arsenal next two gameweeks. Memory tells me he seems to do it against the big teams and his stats are good recently....

FFS does it in their own way tho. They sum up all the pressers per the publishing time, and update the team news tabs pretty frequently afterwards for the remaining pressers

Who will get most out of this gameweek?
        A) Moreno at Watford? Crappy defending, but some hope for attacking points.
        B) Walker at Southampton? Crappy defending as well, but Pelle and co totally out of the game.

Personally, I would go with Walker, can't see Mane or Pelle do any damage.

          I agree.

Think Moreno is a bit overrated tbh, stats are great but there's a serious lack of end product and he hasn't produced more than one assist all season. Was all set on playing him, but now leaning towards playing Bellerin instead.

So... Lukaku vs Mahrez captain debate.

Lukaku has had more shots and chances, seems to be the bigger threat

Evertons defense has been worse.. 50/50?

No Huth for Leicester, though, and possibly no Drinkwater to cover space aswell.

A serious 50/50 call, but although I fancy Mahrez to score the highest, I'll probably just go Lukaku to play it safe given he'll likely be the most captained.

          Same dilemma.
Will go with Mahrez and captain him. He will do more damage to Everton, then Lukaku will to Leicester. Best of luck to us all. 😉

        Bellerin owners..
Didnt play any minutes in gw 1 and gw12, apart from them 90 mins in every gw. Chambers and debuchy fully fit and waiting for game time.
We expect him to play vs man city 21 dec and then sou 26 dec, but then surely he will get a rest in the 'easier games' which are both home games against bou 28 dec and new 5 days later because after that they have liverpool.
        So should we keep him?

GW12 he was injured and GW1 Debuchy played in the 0-2 loss to WH. Wenger has never looked back since.

He's played week in week out and all CL matches aswell. Think he might not be rotated at all honestly.

        Guys, does this make sense?

        Hazard & Westwood -> Wijnaldum & Deulofeu

        Then play this:

        Butland
        Bellerin - Dawson - Dann
        Ozil - Mahrez - Wijnaldum - Deulofeu
        Kane - Lukaku - Vardy

        De Bruyne, Moreno, van Dijk

Got 2FT and it will give me a strong front 8 for Christmas AND cash for Kane->Kun next week. I'll be part of the Wijnaldum short term punt and then have him as bench cover for one or two weeks before ditching for a fodder mid again to enable a Deulofeu-upgrade when Everton's fixtures turn sour.

Wise or just plain stupid given I'll be benching KDB?
