It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Romelu Lukaku – having found the back of the net in six successive starts – takes pride of place at the summit of our Captain Poll with 37% of the vote. Although Everton face a tall task rebuffing Leicester’s effervescent attack at Goodison Park, they’ll be emboldened in the knowledge that Claudio Ranieri’s troops have carded just three clean sheets this term and are without the suspended Robert Huth.

The Foxes’ man of the moment, Riyad Mahrez is next in line with 18% backing. The Algeria international boasts four goals in his last two outings and has amassed eight double-figure point hauls across 15 appearances. Despite delivering attacking returns in all but one of his 16 starts, Jamie Vardy (4%) plays second fiddle to his partner in crime.

Eden Hazard (7%) makes a surprise entry in the top three. The fleet-footed Lille graduate has notched just once this season and has drawn eight blanks on the trot. Nonetheless, should he recover from injuruy, he’s afforded a great opportunity to kick-start his campaign when Sunderland – who rank joint-third for goals conceded (30) – make the trip to Stamford Bridge. The favourable nature of the Blues’ match-up also finds room for Diego Costa (2%) in the Captain Poll.

Georginio Wijnaldum (7%) scooped 14 points against Liverpool in Gameweek 15 and has arguably been Newcastle’s star performer during their recent revival. All seven of the Dutchman’s league goals have arrived on home turf, which renders him an intriguing differential pick ahead of Aston Villa’s visit to St James’ Park.

Mesut Ozil and Harry Kane (both 3%) attracted an identical following this time around. The former has delivered attacking returns in each of his previous 10 starts but faces a Manchester City defence that’s conceded just six times on the road. Meanwhile, the latter is without a goal in three matches but could benefit from Mousa Dembele’s likely return to action when Spurs travel to Southampton.

Philippe Coutinho and Sergio Aguero both come in at the 2% mark ahead of their road respective road ties. Coutinho will do well to breach a Watford rearguard that ranks third for home goals conceded (six), while it remains to be seen whether Aguero will even start for City in Monday’s trip to the Etihad.

Got 1 FT and want to use on my defence as my attack is fine IMO. What transfer would you make on this defence?

Defence is: Bellerin - Moreno - Sagna - Richards - Bennett

Was thinking of doing Richards - Ward, but I also have 5 players tied up in the Arsenal vs City game on Monday and kinda fancy getting rid of Sagna, as City's defence is far from solid ATM.

Yeah I'd bin Sagna for a Stoke or Palace defender probably. What are your keepers?

Why not? Stoke double up seems like a good idea to me. They have been solid defensively

            • 11 Years
            10 years, 3 months ago

Yeh I know, it is slightly tempting but if I was going to double up on defence I think I'd want to double up with a 'bigger' team. E.g a Man United defence when it's at full strength.

If a Stoke defender is going to score better than a Palace defender (which I think they will) then best to go with the Stoke defender whoever your 'keeper is... IMO. Wollscheid.

These are good points. I've never known a keeper to pick up baps and save points in the way he has this season.

The reason they have kept clean sheets is because of his saves, so the BAPS are deserved. He wouldn't have got them with last year's BAP rules.

Toughie, that one. I'm playing Butland. Both keepers are up against good attacks. Butland's form, however, swings it. There is also the trauma of having benched him on previous occasions...

Off topic. Can anyone recommend some decent music that might fly under the radar a bit?

Male artists I enjoy listening to are Macklemore, Gregory Porter, Muse, Radiohead, Coldplay, 2 Door Cinema Club, Kooks, The Strokes, White Stripes, KoL, Arctic Monkeys (anything sung by Alex Turner really)

Female astists: Adele, Amy Winehouse, Grace, Aretha Franklin

Dance: Flux Pavillion, Skrillex, Sigma, Martin Solvieg, Deadmau5, Chemical Brothers

Is there a song/artist you just can't stop listening to at the moment?

No chance, Radiohead are my fav band of all time. Funnily enough I haven't listened to them for a while.

They often get "depressing" thrown at them but I don't find that at all. Their music is so rich and layered that it's like taking a warm bath for the ears lol.

True, I could've easily listed the chillies but the post was already getting quite long! Metallica and NIN too...

I forgot about Royal Blood. I've had them on in the car quite a bit a couple of months ago. Ten Tonne Skeleton is awesome.

I'll give Daughtry a try... cheers!

IDK, the under the radar thing is hanging me up, random stuff I love (I trend towards much harder alt rock though):

      Morphine
      Queens of the Stoneage
      Bomb the Bass
      LCD Soundsystem
      Big Star
The Kills (if you like the White Stripes)
      The Dead Weather (ditto)
The Breeders (Pixies off-shoot, Kim Deal)
      The Dandy Warhols
      The Prodigy
      Thievery Corporation

Hooky, JD is near and dear, but I thought not so under the radar!

I know I'm going to like a lot of that! Bomb da Bass "Winter in July" was the first single I ever bought.

QotS and Prodigy are right up there too. Thanks, will definitely work my way through these 🙂

Sure! I think most of this stuff is aligned to your tastes. Some of it is newer and a lot of it is older (I'm 50-ish).

Bomb the Bass is quite cool, right?

It's been a long time since I listened to Bomb the Bass. He was considered quite cheesy like Snap! and S-Express I suppose, but they're classics in my mind.

I remember this was used in Xenon II an Amiga computer game!

Now that Clichy is back, is Kolarov worth 6.5m?

    Thoughts on:

    Myhill McCarthy
    Kola, Simpson, Moreno, Richards❗, VVD
    Barkley, KDB, Mahrez, Ozil, Yaya
    Ighalo, Lukaku, Vardy

    2 FT, 6.3 ITB

    Best move:

    A. Barkley/Yaya ➡ Wijnaldum (could play AOA chip)
    B. Sell Richards (not sure about replacement, no one stands out for GW17)
    C. Something else

Thinking about Dawson/Ward/Shawx/Zouma. ARS defender could be good long term.
