It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Fresh from his best score (14 points) of the campaign so far, Mesut Ozil boasts a commanding lead (47%) at the summit of the Captain Poll ahead of Arsenal’s home tie against Newcastle United. Aside from a blank against Southampton in Gameweek 18, the Germany international hasn’t failed to produce attacking returns since Gameweek 6, recording six 10+-point hauls in the process. The fact that the Magpies have already suffered two heavy defeats on the road this term (Man City: 6-1; Palace: 5-1) ensures that Olivier Giroud (4%) and Theo Walcott (2%) also place among the top 10 captaincy favourites.

Riyad Mahrez (20%) claims second spot by a clear margin prior to Leicester City’s home encounter against Bournemouth. The Algerian drew blanks against Man City and Liverpool in recent weeks but demonstrated his capacity for explosive returns with six goals in three starts from Gameweek 15. Similarly, Jamie Vardy (4%) hasn’t scored in three but will fancy his chances against a Cherries defence that’s carded just two shut-outs since Gameweek 7.

Sergio Aguero hasn’t lasted beyond the 65-minute mark since his return from injury, but his unrivalled ability to deliver huge Fantasy returns earns him a 4% backing. Although the Sky Blues are matched up against a Watford outfit that conceded just two goals in their previous trio of home clashes, Aguero’s 13% ownership will reason that fixture difficulty is extraneous if their man can discover his groove.

Harry Kane (4%) sits just outside the top five as Tottenham Hotspur prepare for a trip to Everton. The Toffees will doubtless cause Spurs a myriad of problems on the offensive end, but their defence has proved their undoing of late, shipping seven goals in two home match-ups. Furthermore, Roberto Martinez’s men lay claim to just two clean sheets in the last 14 Gameweeks, bolstering Kane’s Fantasy prospects.

Everton will hope that Romelu Lukaku (3%) emerges victorious as two of the league’s form marksmen duel at Goodison Park. The 9.3-priced frontman racked up 10 goals in nine starts but faces off against a Spurs side that ranks bottom for goals conceded (15) and secured two shut-outs in their previous trio of league ties.

Marko Arnautovic and Christian Benteke have been tipped by 2% of FFScout’s readership. The former tallied four goals and one assist in his last five starts, rendering him an enticing route into Stoke City’s effervescent attack ahead of a trip to West Bromwich Albion. The latter has netted in consecutive starts and locks horns with a West Ham team that’s registered just two clean sheets on home turf.

    Repost from last article.

I have had Ozil captain all week, but now I'm leaning more towards Mahrez for that extra goal threat.

Ozil has only had 2 shots on goal in the last 4 games, scoring one. But has created almost 20 goal scoring chances for team mates (remarkable).

Whereas Mahrez has had 7 shots on goal, 2 of which were penalties. Nothing amazing but definitely more of a goal scoring threat there.

    What are your thoughts?

    1. The Royal Robin
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 7 months ago

I'm in the exact same boat, although I've had Ozil as my (C) for 2 consecutive GW's. I'm moving more towards Mahrez myself but if Ozil does get another haul we'd plummet in the rankings - putting me off doing so.

Got 2 FT - may only use one to get rid of McCarthy and put in Henessey. Mane has one final chance this week hence the KDB benching.

    Any other thoughts?

    Butland (McCarthy)

    Smalling Moreno Bellerin (Dier, Nyom)

Mahrez Mane Ozil (C) Ramsey (KDB)

    Ighalo Kane Lukaku

Alexis Sanchez is still missing and Wenger has said he will rotate his side due to the fixture congestion over the festive period. Not a quote but I don't think Giroud is guaranteed to start against Newcastle . If I had him I would keep him and not captain him . If I didn't have him I would not get him in . Best we can do

Kolarov worth an extra .9 over Cresswell? City have a lot of tough matches coming up and West Ham's look relatively easy.

      No.

    Hennessey - Butland
    Azpi - Moreno - Walker - Bennett - Simpson
    KDB - Özil - Mané - Ayew - Mahrez
    Lukaku - Kane - Vardy

    2FT
Thinking Ayew to Alli this week and then Mané and Vardy to Lanzini and Agüero next week.
    Any better options?

I'd do Lanzini and Ayew this week. Lanzini looked really spritely in the last game and Liverpool's defence is still really poor

Coutinho now after the game against Sunderland leads the league in most shots and shots outside the box

    *facepalm*

Its a miracle he is still a regular starter for Liverpool . He wouldn't get a game in any of the top 4 teams imho

He was fine last season but Klopp has boosted his ego it seems and he is shooting even more and more from 30-40 yards. He has gone crazy with his shooting

He's always been like that. He scored 5 goals from 103 shots last season, but he'd still fit in the some of the top teams easily.

I am saying if he does it at this season's rate

              Arsenal - No
              Spurs - No
              City - No
              Chelsea - Maybe

He was poor against Sunderland, but I'd be far more surprised if they benched him and he was no longer a regular starter. As for shooting, the long range efforts that smash into defenders is what he has done for a couple of years, when they come off they're great but often they don't.

(Lukaku, Ramsey, Ozil, Kane, KDB, Mahrez are the rest)

    Thoughts?

    Can anyone help?

I have a back 3 of Moreno, Monreal, Dier (Janmaat)

Gave Lukaku up front so don't really fancy Dier. Should I take a hit and bring in a defender from Man U, Chelsea, Stoke, Palace etc or am I better off not taking the hit?
