    Mahrez Payet Alli KDB Ozil

Still evidence that they haven't got the BPs quite right after tha ManC v Eve game. Everton defence (and particularly Howard) were fantastic and yet the City defence get the top BPs.

Maybe - I thought that they'd fixed that aspect this season and weighted blocks and interceptions more heavily. I think in this case it might have been more to do with getting decent crosses in to the box.

Not sure how the defence that concedes a 15 shots in the box without offering anything in attack can be better than the defence that concedes only 6 shots in the box and provides an attacking threat of its own (both CB's on shots, both laterals created chances).

Anyway, they have to go by stats, and only positive thing that Everton defenders did more were clearances. City defenders recorded better stats in everything else, including defensive actions.

      1. Pasqualinho
        • 16 Years
        10 years, 1 month ago

Well, you could argue that it's the mdfield's job to prevent the opposition getting chances, and the defence's job to keep the chances out when they do come - a side that concedes 15 shots in the box yet comes out with a CS has to be doing something pretty exceptional at the back. But stats are stats and the BPs are stats-based, so I've no problem with that - but just from watching the match I'd say Everton's defence were more responsible for earning their team a point than Man City's were in earning theirs.

        1. Camp No No
          • 12 Years
          10 years, 1 month ago

What? You can't be serious. Just for defensive roles: It's GK's job to save the shots when they come, and defenders' job to keep the forwards from shooting. Midfielders' should reduce the number of passes to the attacking zone.

But then there's also the fact that a top defence should enable their own team to attack. Which is what City defence did, and constantly does.

Responsible for earning Everton a point were: 1. the ref who didn't give the penalties that that Everton defence conceded; 2. Howard who saved 5 shots from dangerous positions; 3. the wasteful City attack.

          1. Camp No No
            • 12 Years
            10 years, 1 month ago

Of course, it is more complicated in that, for example, that the GK has his own role in keeping opponent from shooting in the first place, and so on. But defenders generally have little role left when the opponent already gets to shoot at goal, they should prevent him from doing so.

So far this has been the most boring transfer window for a long time.

    The way I like it.

I think the Shelvey transfer is interesting. The guy deserved more time on the pitch at Swansea, he's a good player.

He got enough time, but was the weakest player in their midfield. There was simply no place for him because others did so much better, so obviously if they can get that much money for a guy gradually reducing to a bench warmer, they're going to take it.

Yeah its fair enough and there was a log jam in there with good midfielder such as Siggy and Ki competing for spots.

And Cork ousts him for the defensive spot.

Imo, Shelley is bit of a flair player, who can do impressive things once a while, but is very inconsistent and mostly bit useless, lacking tactical intelligence. And he's not good enough as that. He's no Ronaldinho, ffs.

january is just a danger time - too many crap players have joined the league in this window. it's just a time to top up in the middle class of player. not a time to make big signings

IMO Payet should get a gig at a bigger club despite his age, he's that good. He'll be well worth it for a couple of seasons and his fee shouldn't be too far out of reach because of his age.

It's because he didn't really perform earlier when he was called and there are other players who do well together in the NT.

It's strange he went to Hammers in the first place. That no bigger club was bidding for him. Despite his age. And I don't even completely understand this age thing, as he's in his peak age, so is able to provide top performances now. If he was a winger, I would get it, but he's not.

But Hammers sure won't let him go for less than £15M now. I don't think there'll be buyers. The potential buyers are looking for the future. They just missed a gem and are going to suck it up.

Payet can maybe blame himself in aftermath. He has always had the skills, but he has been a bit of a trouble kid in his previous teams, and way too inconsistent, had periods when he's been practically transparent. He could have an argument, however, that that has been because the manager has pushed him to the flank, because historically it's evident that whenever he's shined, he's been in the central role, and his weak times have been when he's on wing.

In a recent interview said that at West Ham, they're expecting him to show up for every match (no kiddin! but he said also that in France he sometimes just told the coach he's tired and wants to rest a match), and that's been helping him actually, motivating him to do so. So, maybe he requires some more demanding management. Bielsa, the mad coach (who's not mad though, but demanding) loved him, and used him immensely a lot last season, in the central role, and the results were there to be seen: he did not have a weak period, even when Marseille generally suffered from fatigue in the end of the season, he kept on delivering.

Currently 5th, and moving to the Olympic stadium next season.

Also said he was in tears from the reception the fans gave him coming on first game back from injury, loves the club.

Cant see him moving anywhere else for now, although things could change between now and end of season.

While at Le Havre, Payet endured a tumultuous four years. While training at the club, he was accused of having a difficult character and displaying a lack of motivation.Upon his arrival to Nantes, was described by the club's reserve team coach Stéphane Moreau as a "talented player despite his natural indifference".On 18 May 2010, Payet was involved in a physical altercation with teammate and captain Blaise Matuidi during the team's 1–0 defeat to Toulouse. Midway through the first half, Payet received criticism from teammate Yohan Benalouane for displaying a lack of aggression. He was then confronted by Matuidi who echoed Benalouane's sentiments. Payet and Matuidi suddenly went face-to-face with the former player delivering a blow to Matuidi's head before the two were separated by referee Bruno Coue and teammates. As a result of the incident, Payet was substituted out after 31 minutes and sanctioned by club president Roland Romeyer.[Wikipedia]

This is why big clubs avoided him.

Yes, but that continued still at St.-Étienne, and some would say even at Lille. He took some time to mature. See my post above, though. Maybe he also just needed a more demanding man management, and the licence to play in his favoured central role. Those given, he keeps on delivering.
