We make our way to the Weekly Shop this Wednesday evening, as we assess the player lists of our partner games to pinpoint the likely targets that will make up our own weekly squads.

As always, the player analysis is split into two sections: I’ll break down the key targets that no squad can do without in “Better Buys”, before seeking out those one-shot “Poundstretcher” prospects that can provide us points, whilst freeing up funds.

For this week’s selection, we’re once again scanning the player lists in our two partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt.

Better Buys

Manchester United picked up an eleventh clean sheet of the campaign at Anfield, maintaining the best defensive record in the division. David de Gea (FantasyBet 5.5m, Premier Punt 8.1m) made four saves and picked up two bonus points against the Reds and now welcomes Southampton to Old Trafford this weekend. United have conceded just four times in 10 matches in front of their own fans, whilst for all their recent improvement, the Saints continue to toil on their travels and have scored just twice in the previous four away matches.

Everton’s 3-3 draw at Stamford Bridge exhibited both their strengths and weaknesses last weekend. Only City have scored more goals this term, though on the other hand, the Toffees record of 32 goals against is better than just six other sides. Given that weekend visitors Swansea have scored just twice in their last five road trips, though, Roberto Martinez’ men will be optimistic of a third clean sheet in six. Leighton Baines (FantasyBet 6m, Premier Punt 6.5m) offers a relatively cut-price route into the defence and served up two assists against the Blues, reminding us of past glories and his ability to produce returns at both ends of the pitch.

Given that the Swans have kept just a single clean sheet away from the Liberty, Everton’s attacking assets are also worth considering. Ross Barkley (FantasyBet 7m, Premier Punt 10.4m) has been quiet in recent weeks but has already notched six goals and eight assists and is a viable midfield option, having recorded nine attempts over the last four league matches. Striker Romelu Lukaku (FantasyBet 9m, Premier Punt 12.3m) is also likely to be a hugely popular pick this week, having scored or assisted in each of his last six home appearances.

After a lay-off with injury, Roberto Firmino (FantasyBet 8m, Premier Punt 10.6m Forward) has featured more regularly for Liverpool and had growing influence over the last 12 Gameweeks. The increased pitch time has seen the Brazilian record a 50% involvement in the Reds’ goals over that period, picking up three goals and four assists, including double-figure hauls against Man City and Arsenal. Up against a Norwich with three clean sheets to their name all season, Firmino looks the man most likely for the Merseysiders.

Poundstretchers

Watford’s home encounter with Newcastle offers the Hornets a chance to bounce back after chalking up a fourth straight loss at Swansea last Monday evening. Quique Sanchez Flores’ men have kept six clean sheets in ten in front of their own fans and with the Magpies drawing blanks in their last two away matches, Heurelho Gomes (FantasyBet 4.5m, Premier Punt 6.9m) looks an ideal option between the sticks. The Brazilian remains third on points in the overall goalkeeper leaderboard and with new arrival Costel Pantilimon waiting in the wings, should be eager to put in a performance here.

We’re also backing Watford’s budget frontman Odion Ighalo (FantasyBet 5.5m, Premier Punt 8.1m) to end a three-match goal drought this weekend.. The Nigerian had netted nine times in as many matches prior to that run of blanks and Newcastle roll up having shipped 21 goals in their last ten away fixtures, conceding two or more in five of those ties.

Sam Allardyce’s pragmatic approach appears to have given Sunderland a fighting chance of survival – two wins and eight goals scored over the last three indicates a revival of fortunes on Wearside. Patrick Van Aanholt (FantasyBet 4.5m, Premier Punt 7.6m) has been the unlikely source of three of those goals and even served up an assist against Swansea. The in-form left-back now welcomes a Bournemouth side that have drawn blanks in each of their last two on the road.

Jermaine Defoe (FantasyBet 5m, Premier Punt 8.3m) has also been in fine form. The veteran striker netted five times in the two recent victories including a hat-trick against Swansea and could deliver great value against the Cherries.

If you’re looking for a cheap enabler in midfield this week, Jesse Lingard (FantasyBet 4.5m, Premier Punt 5m) could help to fill a spot and provide funds to spend elsewhere. The Manchester United youngster is a bit of a risky pick, but, having started the last two and scored against Newcastle, the midfielder could be utilised once again for the visit of Southampton.

West Brom’s Craig Dawson (FantasyBet 5.0m, Premier Punt 7.6m) is another to consider. The right-back welcomes midlands rivals Villa to the Hawthorns and, as well as scoring twice this term, provided the assist for Salomon Rondon’s FA Cup winner over Bristol City last night. Remi Garde’s side have scored just three times in their last five road trips, suggesting a clean sheet could be on the cards for Tony Pulis’ defensive regulars.

These are the contenders for my weekly contest lineups heading into this week’s fixtures. I’ll bring you up to date on my progress in our partner games – FantasyBet and Premier Punt – in my articles next week, as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

Problem with a great short history is that a bad year kills your Hof rating. Was top 100 going in to the season. Too scared to look now.

In terms of Man City's spending power, and overall importance to their squad, combined with age and potential, he's nowhere near the worst.

      1. Kurtinho
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 2 months ago

What I'm trying to say is he was a luxury purchase as they still had decent centre backs at the time. And he could still come good as he's relatively young for that position.

Carroll was not too bad for Liverpool. Did well in the cup and Liverpool recouped over half of the fee back.

      1. Kurtinho
        • 11 Years

He was only bad as he clearly did not fit into the style of play. Panic buy. We had to buy players like Downing and Adam just to accommodate him, which compounded the issue. Luckily we got Suarez in the same window to negate that a bit.

    Butland Hennessey
    Bellerin Rose Moreno Ward Williams
    Payet Ozil Mahrez Arnautovic Stanislas
    Aguero Kane Lukaku

    2FT 4.7ITB

I'm all set on Mirallas but who goes for him:

    a) Arnautovic
    b) Stanislas

The reasoning behind keeping Arnie is twofold. Firstly, since Mirallas is a risk I have a better mid to come on. More importantly, I have some value tied up in him and he has great fixtures coming up soon.
Stanislas is obvious. Cheap 5th mid which frees up funds.

    Cheers 🙂

It's a punt because Martinez clearly has issues with him and Everton fans talk about his attitude and going missing but he has to start surely after last performance and 2 plum home fixtures and possibly a DGW coming up it's a punt worth taking IMO

Which one of these would you do? Got 2FT so I can do both.

    1) Ozil>Firmino

Firmino is likely to get the nod up front again and has looked lethal there. Statistically his goals/assists per games are significantly higher than when playing elsewhere. Norwich aren't exactly a great team at defending either.

Ozil on the other hand has lost form and historically has struggled in the second half of the season. He has had his rest now but it will be hard for him to replicate his form. He also isn't much of a goal scorer which is a problem.

    2) Mahrez>Barkley

Mahrez has tough games coming up, is off form and is off penalties. Barkley on the other hand isn't the greatest player but he plays on a very offensive team with favourable fixtures.

OTOH you can look at it as a lot to gain... if you pick a player that scores and Ozil starts blanking you are gaining a lot of ground on everyone else.

I was tempted to do Ozil > Firmino myself but think there will be goals for Arsenal against Chelsea and Livepool have just been so inconsistent a) away from home and b) against the lower table teams

Also Firmino already scolded me once; think if it was a home game and Arsenal were away I'd be more tempted.

Aye. If you were feeling brave you could leave Ighalo for this week against Newcastle and hope either he hits form or Austin shows form. That way you'd have a cheaper alternative up from that would allow you more leeway elsewhere.

Tough one. Ideally you'd have both but you have to make up the team value deficit somewhere. Next week you'll know whether Lukaku has a DGW or a blank next though so you could let that make up your mind for you?

I had him earmarked as my preferred downgrade option for Kane - should I go that way. I just think it may take him a while to get going - if it all this season. He'll be a FPL starter for next season though, for sure!

Conundrum gents, who to bench? Payet (home to MCI) or Mahrez (home to Stoke)?

That's a really tough one. I would reluctantly say Mahrez

Very tough, surely you can bench someone else. If i had to pick i'd bench Mahrez due to form.

My other mids are Ozil, Rambo and Alli and I like their chances better than Payet and Mahrez...am leaning towards Mahrez but only just. Thanks all for your responses. Forwards are Kun, Kane and Iggy so not considering any of them this week.

    Transfer to burn 0.9 ITB.

    De Gea
    Evans, Moreno, Walker*
    KDB, Alli, Mahrez, Ozil
    Kane, Aguero (C), Lukaku

    McCarthy, Lingard, Cresswell, Smith

Walker to Jags is what I'm on atm as can't afford Baines. Gonna let the other transfer roll over and sort out that template of a midfield when some DGW are announced. Any better suggestions?

Keep Walker and do Smith to Daniels

Walker rotation risk tho so I'm quite set on losing him. I'd probs end up benching Daniels every week looking at my current defence and their fixtures.

Hmm maybe the PVA punt. Been watching him closely in recent games and he's very advanced

Lingard to Stanislas to free a few pound maybe?

Lost 0.3 on Lingard so I'm hoping to get some value back. Think my defence is the priority really. I'd lose DDG to free up funds if he didnt have 2 decent home games.

Sorry just realised Lingard and Stanislas are the same value. Idiotic comment on my behalf.

Ya I have DDG also but as you said, plum home fixtures. Walker is a rotation risk but against a poor Palace outfit it's hard to off load.

Very nice team by the way. That frontline is my goal. (Currently freeing up funds for Iggy to Kun) 🙂

Bench one this GW....tough decision hmmm

    A) Kosceilny (Che h)
    B) Daniels (Sun a)
    C) Evans (AV h)
    D) Moreno (Nor a)

      Maybe C

B or D for mine. Daniels on pens would tilt it slightly in his favour - so Moreno on bench for mine.

I'd go B. I know he's the best defender in the world atm, but SUnderland have been scoring goals and Bournemouth rarely keep CS away from home.

Tonight's suggested transfer for me was Kun->Ighalo

I like the Gameweek LIVE features, but everything else there is suspect at best.

Lol. It is probably run by casuals. My suggested transfer every week is someone to KDB. Most weeks it tells me to captain him as well

GTG here? Probably saving the FT, then deciding next week who comes in from the DGW teams.

    Butland
    Bellerin, Moreno, G Johnson
    KDB, Ozil, ALi, Payet
    Aguero(vc), Kane, Lukaku(C)

    Elliot, Mahrez, SImpson, Dann
    1FT 0.8M ITB

      Solid, Swan. Save FT.

I'd play Simpson ahead of Moreno. Norwich has scored in all but one of their home games.

LOL, see my above reply to Poch. So by FFF rational. Ighalo>Kane>Kun

Maybe it doesn't know Kun is back from injury
