Spurs win at a canter, Alexis Sanchez inspires a Gunners victory, while Kelechi Iheanacho passes another audition as Sergio Aguero’s stand-in. Here are all the notes from Saturday’s FA Cup fourth round ties…

Chadli Stars In Spurs Stroll

Mauricio Pochettino made seven changes to his starting XI as Tottenham Hotspur cruised into the fifth round by way of a 4-1 victory at Colchester. Harry Kane was among the starters but left the field shortly after Spurs doubled their advantage in the 64th minute. Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld were unused on the bench.

Nacer Chadli bolstered his case for a starting berth at Norwich on Tuesday with a brace and an assist. The Belgian has notched four goals and two assists in a trio of outings across all competitions, arguably pushing him ahead of Son Heung-min and Erik Lamela in the tussle for that fourth spot in the Lilywhites’ attacking quartet.

Eric Dier netted Tottenham’s second with a heavily deflected strike, while Tom Carroll – who started in central midfield but advanced to the number ten berth following Moussa Dembele’s introduction on 56 minutes – bagged his third goal of the season. Elsewhere, Kieran Trippier, Nabil Bentaleb and Erik Lamela picked up assists.

With Jan Vertonghen sidelined for at least two months, Kevin Wimmer was handed a start alongside Dier in central defence. Given the recent backing from Pochettino, Wimmer would seem destined to partner Alderweireld at Carrow Road. The Austrian is priced at just 4.6 in the Fantasy Premier League and would therefore offer an assured route into the Spurs defence over the next two months. Spurs are, however, without a clean sheet in their last five.

Sanchez Ignites Gunners

Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny – who both lasted the distance – were the only players that retained their starting slots as Arsenal recorded a 2-1 win over Burnley at the Emirates. Alexis Sanchez was the star of the show, marking his first start since November with a goal and assist as part of an impressive display. The Chilean ranks seventh with regards to “transfers in” (67,000) ahead of a home tie against Southampton, with a wave of Kevin De Bruyne owners making the switch in response to the Belgian’s long-term injury.

Operating at right-back, Callum Chambers opened the scoring with a sumptuous strike. With Aaron Ramsey rested and absent from the matchday squad, a fit-again Francis Coquelin partnered debutant Mohamed Elneny in the centre of the park. Hector Bellerin and Nacho Monreal were both unused substitutes.

Iheanacho Punishes Villa

Manchester City crushed Aston Villa 4-0 en route to the last 16. Kelechi Iheanacho illustrated his burgeoning potential with a hat-trick (one penalty) and assist for the visitors, boosting his tally to eight for the season. Certainly, with Wilfried Bony consigned to the treatment room and De Bruyne out of action, the Nigerian frontman could be in line to enjoy increased pitch time in the month ahead. The same can be said of Raheem Sterling, who netted the fourth goal and claimed an assist.

Sergio Aguero and David Silva were unused on the bench at Villa Park, while Yaya Toure was handed the afternoon off.

City’s defence recorded their fourth clean sheet in six across all competitions, offering encouragement for investors in their rearguard before a favourable trip to Sunderland in midweek. Bacary Sagna was recalled and deployed at centre-back alongside Nicolas Otamendi throughout – his impressive performance will have given Pellegrini food for thought while the Chilean waits on Vincent Kompany’s recovery from injury.

Eagles Edge Past Potters

Wilfried Zaha was on target as Crystal Palace sneaked past Stoke City in a 1-0 home win. The twinkle-toed winger has been the Eagles’ premier threat of late but is suffering from Palace’s lack of cohesion in the final third – as evidenced by the fact they mustered just two shots on target against the Potters.

To compound matters, Dwight Gayle had a setback in training, further diminishing Alan Pardew’s options in the absence of the suspended striker Connor Wickham. Nonetheless, the Palace boss revealed that Emmanuel Adebayor is likely to be involved in some capacity in the midweek meeting with Bournemouth.

Yohan Cabaye – who served up the assist for Zaha – represents the Londoners’ chief creative presence, but is now a major doubt for their midweek fixture after leaving the stadium on crutches with an ankle complaint.

Adding to Stoke’s misery following their exit from both domestic cups this week, Marc Wilson succumbed to an injury late on at Selhurst Park, which Mark Hughes suggested could be ligament damage. Considering that Ryan Shawcross is also out of action with ongoing back problems, Marc Muniesa (4.2 in the FPL) seems destined to partner Philipp Wollscheid in central defence when the Potters travel to Old Trafford.

Elphick Returns For Much-Changed Cherries

Josh King and Marc Pugh graced the scoresheet as Bournemouth ran out 2-1 victors over Portsmouth. In light of Benik Afobe’s form (two in two) in the lone-striker berth, along with the signing of Lewis Grabban, King’s spell as an out-of-position asset seems at an end. He now looks forced to challenge the likes of Junior Stanislas, Matt Ritchie and Juan Iturbe for starts on the flanks. The latter earned his first start in Saturday’s tie as Eddie Howe continued to ease the Argentine into the first team fold.

On the injury front, Cherries captain Tommy Elphick clocked 76 minutes on his return from ankle surgery – his first start since September. Elphick’s return to contention could now force a shake-up in Howe’s back four, with Adam Smith’s role at right-back under threat. It would seem likely that Simon Francis will revert to full-back, allowing Elphick to return alongside Steve Cook in the centre. Alternatively, it could be Cook who makes way for the club skipper, with Francis and Smith retained. The midweek teamsheet at Palace will offer more clues as to that outcome.

Berahino Brace Not Enough For Baggies

Amid a crescendo of reports regarding a possible transfer this window, Saido Berahino recorded a brace as West Bromwich Albion conceded two late goals against Peterborough United, setting up a replay on the Posh’s home turf. In the event that the 5.8-priced forward fails to seal a transfer to Newcastle United or Tottenham Hotspur, he could yet establish himself as a viable pick-up on the Fantasy market this campaign, given that the Baggies are hardly blessed with alternative attacking riches.

Elsewhere in the West Brom camp, Ben Foster was sidelined due to a minor rib injury, rendering him an early doubt for the West Midlanders’ home encounter against Swansea City on Tuesday.

Liverpool Held In Anfield Bore

Jurgen Klopp enacted 10 changes from the XI that competed in Liverpool’s midweek League Cup clash, welcoming Nathaniel Clyne back from the treatment room whilst handing a start to Dejan Lovren following his return to the bench in midweek. The Reds’ inexperienced side ultimately failed to overcome West Ham United at the first time of asking, adding yet another fixture to their already congested February schedule.

Liverpool’s replay date with West Ham will fall on February 9, finally extinguishing all possibility that their league encounter with Everton from Gameweek 27, postponed due to the Reds’ progress to the Capital One Cup Final, could be shifted forward to Gameweek 25.

West Ham produced an unconvincing performance against the Merseysiders’ fledgling XI, tallying just seven attempts and one shot on target throughout the course of the match-up. Dimitri Payet played the 90 minutes, while Michail Antonio was introduced at the 70-minute mark. James Tomkins and Victor Moses were drafted back into the side, but Adrian (birth of child) and Mark Noble (illness) were unavailable for selection. Tomkins picked up a head injury in the first half which required stitches, while Cheikhou Kouyate followed the defender off the pitch shortly after – both are doubts for Tuesday’s home meeting with Villa.

Re: Stones discussion, here a lengthy Squawka comparison matrix including Stones, the other Everton CB's and the current young CB's of the buyer candidates.

Ignoring the names, I know which two of that lot I would not want in my defence. Funnily, it happens to be the two of which the teams are willing to pay the most money. Strange, but defence is hard to assess by stats, so maybe I'd be wrong to avoid them.

Defenders cant be judged by stats I have learnt. You need to watch a lot of matches to see their positional sense. No way around that atm

You have to copy the whole link and I think it works then.

Btw, funny, how that defence score is determined? From the set of stats I selected, it seems hard to conclude how Mori has been defensively worse than Jagielka. To me he seems to be the best of the lot, which surprises me somewhat. Also, it's hard to see how Zouma's defensive performances had been that much worse than Jagielka's or Mori's. I like very much both his rate and absolute numbers in duels won, and his other numbers are not really that much behind those of Jagielka and Mori.

Defensive stats means squat cos aggressive defenders who often move out of their backbone breaking the defence line have awesome stats

As above you're getting bogged down. Watch the games and watch them again if you've got a keen interest. Don't grt drawn into the trap of listening to stats "experts" - remember someone earlier this season saying Simon Francis was a better defender than john Terry because his baseline bps were better!!

Gee dudes, I state it myself that defence is hard to assess by stats, so no need to come up with besserwisser comments like that if you have nothing productive to say.

Moreover, your statements (both of you) are way too blunt on this matter. It's mostly just that it's very difficult to assess the defence by the quantity of his actions with the ball, because it might be better for him not to get to take those actions. You can tell, for example, that Zouma is tough to beat individually, significantly tougher than Jagielka or Mangala, because he takes a lot of duels and wins them with high percentage. That's something you know about his defensive qualities. And then you can combine a set of team stats with and without a player to tell more about the importance of the player for the team defence. There are statistical ways to assess defenders, although it is more difficult than with forwards.

You can get a lot of the context statistically, tbh, particularly today that we can use player positional and movement maps, as well as the pass maps and such.

What I really despise are these people who think that they're great professional scouts because they've watched football! 😀 So that their subjective observation of the player or a team from the stands or on tv is somehow reliable evaluation of that player's skills. 😆 The great arrogant argument "I've seen him play". So have millions of other people in most cases, it settles nothing. (not aimed at you, mind) Stats at least give you something objective and tangible.

Btw, you're also completely right about the forwards point. It seems always easier to assess a forward individually, because they actually are most of the time doing well when they get to play the ball, yet they depend heavily on what is around them. Take Real Madrid. Özil, Di Maria, Benzema and likes have great chance creation stats. They're very creative, then, right? But then Ronaldo and Bale take a lot of shots, so they're good at getting to shooting sector and "find" shots? How much of Ronaldo's great shooting numbers are the effect of playing with such a great creative side, and how much of the creation numbers are a "Ronaldo effect" of playing with a forward who shoots a lot? This is also why I always like to compare a player to his team mates: how he does relative to others who play in a close role in the same tactical set up.

In the Real's case, it's probably that quality players influence each other positively, but when we take a look at teams like Liverpool and Spurs from last two seasons, when they got huge numbers of shots from distance, it pushed the chance creation numbers up, because most of the times when Coutinho or Townsend put the ball to the row Z from 30 meters it was a chance created by somebody. And that didn't necessarily mean that anybody was playing better for that. It's very important to take a more whole context of from where and in which position those chances are created.

E.g. even if Özil creates less chances at Arsenal than he did at Real (Ronaldo effect?), this season he has created a lot of chances inside the box. 3 of the top 4 big chance missers in PL this season play for Arsenal, which tells that while Özil's passes have been converted with a very high rate, it may not in fact be unsustainable, as Arsenal is simply getting extremely good chances. (Now, some argue that this rate of clear cut chances is unsustainable, and it may be, but that's another thing.)

Particularly stats like 'chances created' and 'dribbles' always require a closer look at: where do they occur on the pitch, really.

Also, you can tell about how they do with the ball, and it indeed seems that Mangala is quite comfortable with the ball, good passing stats compared even to other City defenders. So is Stones.

Need to cut some distance in ML, and I'm considering that maybe this is good week to play AoA, specially because I don't dare to bench anyone from my front 8 this GW.

    Bellerín Jagielka

Arsenal bottle it in February...always do..

Leicester have to fade away eventually (don't they) tough 3 games coming up

          Midfield:
          Antonio, Wijnaldum, Ozil, Alli, KdB

Have two FTs, though the plan is to transfer KdB to Firmino and bench Wijnaldum.

          All good?

Dropping the Williams sisters? Don't like it.

The Sanchez move is maybe a good one, though. But if you need to downgrade a defender to afford him then it should be Baines. You're punting on Mitrovic so don't really see the point in an Everton defender, even if it is one with a chance of attacking points. Win big or go down in flames.

And i would still ditch Alli. He's nailed on to be in the Scout's team so you'll need a differential here. Too much expectation for him to repeat his 13 pointer is raising his stock, but you've got to take a risk that he will be one of the ones that drags the Scout's score down. And I'm an Alli owner, so if I get this one wrong, I still win!

I agree with Pasqualinho above I would do Eriksen over Alli but if money permit Barkley or Silva should be in there too. That is not supported by stats and just a gut feeling but still

My rival - who is 40 points ahead of me has just WCed to this team (showed me).

          Hart Hennessey
          Bellerin Alder Cresswell Wollschied Targett
          Sanchez Sterling Payet Ayew Barkley
          Costa Vardy Giroud

He has been very lucky with his points 🙁 And he's a die hard Arsenal fan, loves Giroud. Should overcome the gap, right?

WOW..i think hes missing key players which will be in your favour but if his diffrential clicks then you in danger haha interesting scenario!

Not a clue to be honest. Hoping we play 4-4-2 with Ihenacho and Agüero playing together, I want Touré to be dropped but it's not going to happen so maybe Delph will be dropped to the bench even though he's been great. It's a bit tough predicting City's lineup.
