So I did it. After a couple of weeks attempting to resist Sergio Aguero and, despite meticulously constructing a convincing case to avoid him, I went back on my word.

Recovering from the dramatic climb-down, I felt rather hollow heading into this ScoutCast, with Jonty, Andy and Luke all too keen to watch on while I tucked into humble pie.

Not surprisingly, I spend a good part of this episode justifying the back tracking, before I join my co-hosts in offering views on another bout of community questions. We discuss the Lukaku exit plans, Ozil vs Sanchez and contemplate options between the sticks with Jack Butland losing his shine.

Then we move on to the Gameweek preview, as I desperately try to find some joy in pondering which mid-price defender to sign heading into Saturday’s deadline. Sigh.

This episode of the ScoutCast was first aired live on Wednesday evening via our YouTube channel.

You can view the full version via the larger player below, or soak up the more refined audio version via this link or the smaller player.

Don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel for updates on new episodes.

NB: apologies in advance for Luke’s sound quality. We discovered a technical problem after the recording was completed. If you’re struggling to decipher what he’s saying, just imagine him agreeing with everything I say.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think FPL needs much faster and bigger price changes.

IMO it is the only way to stop the template. When cheap players as the last few seasons do well throughout the year it is silly they are only 1.5 mill more than in GW1 at the end.

Increase or decrease by up to £1Mill per week based on transfers and points gained.

Player to keep 80% not 50% of profits on initial price paid when they sell.

    What do you think?

I think non regular price times to, so a player rises or falls set on an automatic trigger, maybe what you mentioned. Would stop people playing the system as much.

The systenm they use in rugby league (nrl) fantasy is good. The prices and transfers are locked when the matches are in progress then new prices come out once the matches have finished, and stay the same until after the next round of matches.

The prices change based on points scored, and can move quite rapidly, and because prices dont move during the week there is no rush to bring them in until near deadline

That could work, or maybe a surcharge for surplus cash Itb after a while. Say for example you have 4 million Itb for 3 gws you lose a percentage of it.

The addition to that is that in recent times they have also added a 'reverse trades' function in that you can trade early in the week and if closer to the next round you don't like the look of what you've done you can just reverse it and do something else

Not everyone. I always suffer team value wise due to waiting for Friday/Saturday transfers when possible. No real form so you are maybe buying the form players at that point.

Fair enough, and admittedly I am the same and have only really become concerned with TV over the past couple of seasons. It came with more participation on here and probably being what would be defined as a casual in the years prior to that.

Seems interesting. Or maybe they re-assign player prices after like halfway through the season as though it were the start of the following year based on form? If you have Mahrez from the start and he is 5.5 to 6.5 then they reassign and he is priced at 9.0 or something you can keep at same sell price or something like that?

How about the way it works on the MLS fantasy game where players rise and fall depending on their weekly score

Don't remember the exact figures but say if mahrez had a couple bit hauls in a row he could rise by nearly a mil in a few weeks

I am for increased price rises and falls but not to the levels you are talking. Slowly slowly but I do think the 'players' get a rough deal over the casuals as it stands.
What about a player can rise or fall everyday between game weeks and not be capped at £0.3?

I also think a manager who plays an injured player (red flagged) when other bench options are available should not get the full value of the auto sub. I think a -1 would be fair to those who actually play the game.

Really no reason to do the substitution yourself, either. Other than having your final score be more "real-time". If I know that one of the red flagged players aren't playing, I sometimes leave them on to get a false sense of "extra points" at the end of the GW.

I think the way transfers work is one of the best things about the FPL format. It keeps you engaged throughout the week and there is a constant dynamic between those willing to punt early and risk injury vs those who are more patient. No one strategy has proven better than the other one.

Could prices move faster than they do? Probably makes sense that this be sped up a little to help redress the major imbalances like Kane last year and to help players reach their market price quicker

Should players keep more of the profit? I'm not sure how this would help stop the template? I would hate the game to be all about profit building early on at the expense of playing fantasy football. Too much of that already. The 50% reduces this as an effective strategy, though it is still effective to a degree. The balance here is ok imo.

I've played the versions of Sportal games for EPL and AFL (same system as NRL referred to be Triggerlips) and the whole start of the season becomes completely about jumping on players who are about to jump massively in price, which is totally predictable based on the last 3 / last 5 average score algorthm they use. Ruins the games in my opinion. It also becomes just as template with everyone who knows how to play having the best possible team by mid season, no sacrifices required. No enabler punts required. Rubbish.

I too like that FPL is different to the Sportal model however the fact that you have limited 2 trades per round and only 30 over the course of the season with no ability to essentially 'buy' trades with points means that you can't just chase everyone who's about to skyrocket in price,

For me there is certainly a skill in picking those players who are on the up and likely to maintain than those likely to crash back down to earth after run of good form. Also when the template does begin to develop the right differential as in FPL can have a massive impact on your rank. By no means would I say all knowledgeable players have the same team by midseason, AFL especially when you have 22 on the park and and 8 subs.

For me both have their merits and I enjoy that they're different.

I think this is completely wrong.

If prices rise too fast then people will be forced into bringing in the same "hot" players everyone else is getting before its too late. People will be afraid to go stray from the template once they are on the hot players too as they may not be able to get back on them again.

I actually think the converse of what you say would help break the template. At the minute people get so much value built up in players they can't sell them as it costs them too much to bring them back. If there was no price changes people would be more likely to take a chance on not bringing in someone who was flying and they might be quicker to sell them if only for a short spell even.

This phenomenon of set template us even more prevalent in the second half of the season and again I think this is due to the amount of players that have risen so much meaning managers are afraid to dump them. This can be anything up to 5 or 6 players that the majority of teams have meaning we are trying to move with at most 5 or 6 different players but it is more like 2 or 3 different players to those around us.

This weekend, Manchester City are playing the league leaders who have lost once in their twelve games away from home this season and who have only conceded thirteen goals along the way. Liverpool on the other hand are playing a team who have lost nine of their twelve games on the road while conceding nearly three times as many goals en-route (last eight matches in all competitions = 6-0-3-3-4-3-2-4). They are also priced up at 1/5 to be relegated.

Now, no one needs to tell me that there's a gulf in class between Manchester City and Liverpool but there's an even bigger one between Leicester and Sunderland (six places and thirteen points separate the first two but eighteen places and thirty one points separate the latter).

In the "To score two or more goals" market, Aguero is favourite at 100/30. However, close up behind at 5/1 (and the clear midfield favourite) is Roberto Firmino.

Sitting at only 11% in the captains poll, this guy looks like the one to stick the armband on if you're in need of a bit of a differential.

Think owning Firmino is differential enough captaining him just scares the crap out of me.

He's so unpredictable as are Liverpool.

Liverpool are the new Spurs - talented individuals, able to destroy a team on the day when they click, but as soon as you need to rely on gem pulling a result together they'll flop and disappoint you.

Spurs, on the other hand, appear to be the new Man City - star striker, quality midfield options, solid if mildly unrewarding defence, and reliable enough to score each game and potentially explode more often.

        Kane (c) for me...

Ouch - triple Leicester seems and double So'ton is a must!
          Big question is:

          Schmeichel + So'ton defender

          or

          Forster + Leicester defender

            • 12 Years

Forster and Simpson is cheaper, Schmeichel and VVD has more goal and baps potential.

Current results “prediction” for each match next GW (based on each team’s number of team goals spread market mid-point).

        Man C 2.05 Leicester 0.95
        Villa 1.3 Norwich 1.05
        Liverpool 2.15 Sunderland 0.75
        Newcastle 1.35 West Brom 1
        Stoke 1.35 Everton 1.3
        Swansea 1.35 Palace 0.95
        Spurs 1.95 Watford 0.75
        Southampton 1.65 West Ham 0.8
        Bournemouth 1.05 Arsenal 1.55
        Chelsea 1.35 Man U 0.95

For example, if Man C v Leicester was played at the same time in parallel universes, say, 100 times, the spread-betting website reckons that Man C would score 205 goals (i.e. a 2.05 average) and Leicester 95 (i.e. a 0.95 average).

I agree, my only issue is it's a must win 'classic 6 pointer' for City and reckon they'll really go for it. Leicester will probably also defend by attacking.

Can see a very high scoring game.

Watford on the other hand could be tough to break down.

In the reverse fixture Leicester really sat back and defended. They were probably a little lucky to not concede but overall did quite nicely.

            I really think it'll be a tight game, possibly 1-1 or 2-1.

Yeah I remember that, but because they are away and City at home, think things could really open up.

Esp as Pelli is on his way now, he'll want to be remembered for entertaining football etc.

Let's face it, none of us know 😀

Agree. I think we are still underestimating Leicester. Tight game 1-0 or 1-1 most likely result.

        Moreno out, Ivanovic in.

        Ivan + Naismith(C) + VvD in -8

Not really sure i would keep Baines over Moreno at the moment. Also, i would keep Wolly. Would just do Lukaku > Paloschi or someone else if you are really adamant not getting Vardy

It would give you -4 and would be set.

Haha I've already made the moves 😉

Kept Baines for next two fixtures, west brom and villa. Plus I have zero faith in Liverpool, just wanted rid of Moreno, I fancy Khazri + Defoe to punish Mignolet + co.

Lukaku -> Naismith was done yesterday, was also considering Afobe but he's up against Arsenal and keeps getting subbed early..

Paloschi was another option and looks a great shout for this week but then look at his next 3 fixtures, arsenal, saints, spurs iirc.

Yea, fair enough! I am debating getting Ivan as i said for Delaney for a hit. I am kinda sad that with 68 points i got a red arrow again last gw. Cant catch a break at all lately. I do hope Ivan will deliver or he could easily get me 0 points this GW.

Haha I'd prefer a red arrow with 68 points than a red arrow with 47 😉

I would personally do Delaney -> Ivan, but I'm mad and have since lumped on Ivan.. Fancy Paloschi to start scoring this week, or Siggy to keep up his form.

Che v Mun could easily be 0-0

Man I miss the 90s, was the decade I grew up, see my first ever football game live, used to commentate in the kitchen with a tennis ball or the garden with my mates pretending to be Cantona or Kanchelskis etc, or play over the school grounds with all my mates, football every night, all night after school.Putting 64 teams in a hat and doing mock FA cup draws. Not just football though, I remember staying up late with my dad, to watch Bruno fight in America and all the Benn Eubank Collins rivalry in boxing. Coming home from school in the spring to turn on and watch Lara and the Windies breaking records in jam packed to the rafters crowd test matches with a great atmosphere. Staying up to midnight to listen to England getting hammered down under in the ashes. Sampras, Becker, Agassi rivalries at Wimbledon, those late summer nights whilst playing out with your mates, trying to be like Sampras. Euro 96, was only 10 but the buzz around the country... I've never felt since. Grandstand on a Saturday at 12.15, then the big match on ITV on Sunday, an old division 2 match, then switch over to Football Italia on channel 4 "golllllllllllaaazzzoooo" I don't know if times have changed, or life just gets boring as you get older, I'm only 30, but those were the days. Just laying in bed, thinking of my dad, reminiscing, great memories, would love to go back. What was your best sporting decade ? And best childhood memories that sparked your love of the game and sport ?

86 was my first wc I remember, 90 the one that hooked me on football. Schlacci (spelling) gazza, that Irish keeper doing the cross sign before a penalty.
Mum telling me how she got hit in the face with a baseball at derbys old ground, the baseball ground.
I remember playing a basic footy manager game with two pencils with numbers written on each side, roll each one for a score. Used to play multiple seasons a session.
When I was an older teenager getting 2 free tickets to watch sheffields I'll fated American football team on the back of a bus ticket (really enjoyed the game though).
Loads of sporting memories. Youngsters these days have lost that a bit with the Internet and 500 billion TV channels showing all sports, no fun in discovering if you can become an arm chair genius in 10 mins

Sport is so much more exciting as a child. World cup 90 for me with football. England shoulda coulda won it.

Though the lad years were also awesome, I have never had a better sporting moment than England winning the rugby world cup, made all that much better by being in a pub at 7am in the morning. Rest of the day in pub after pub standing on tables and singing Jerusalem with total strangers. Also England beating Germany in Euro 2000, the whole of Bristol seemed to be hammered and celebrating as we wandered through the city centre

Like others above, the joys of you youth are a big factor. I remember the '74 world cup but the highs & lows of watching Scotland in '78 will always be with me. Tears of horror in losing to Cubillas & Peru, tears of shame in the shambles against Iran only to go through every emotion in the game versus Netherlands. rounding around the house fist pumping with tears of joy when wee Archie dribbled through to make the miracle possible only to see it snatched away again.
Happened a few times since then btw but you do get used to it.
Oleg Blochkein was a first idol followed by Cruyff in 74 and then wanting to be Daniel Passarella after the '78 WC.
Maybe get a bit of that old feelingback in the upcoming 'Auld enemy' games coming up in the WC qualifiers. 🙂

            A - Butland - (Everton)
            B - Hennessy - (swans)

            - Everton have failed to scored in 6/24 games. (Score in 75%)
            - Swansea have failed to score in 9/24 games. ( Not scored in 38%)
Does the % swing to Swansea a little?
ie, it's more likely that Everton will score than Swansea will and therefore that Hennessy has a better chance of a cs?
Or am I not allowing enough for the 'Butland' factor but hard to calculate this with the loss of Shawcross as he skews the stats?

Any thoughts on getting in Ivan or Sanchez to bring me to a -8 HVT?

Could lose any of Baines/Moreno/Bellerin or Payet/Alli/Arnie..

I'd leave it now IM, you really should have got Kane instead of Naismith,
There's a decent chance of a Moreno cd this week, I think B next week for me.

Couldn't get Kane in with Lloris / Alder / Alli.. 😐

Starting to think Afobe / Giroud could have been a better shout than Naismith but sure I'll go with the initial gut feeling and captain the Scot!

Sunderland were impressive against City but I suppose they always are.. Might still do Baines -> Ivan and bench Moreno, not ruling it out, but I'll probably end up sticking..

I wouldnt go -8, but it really could pay off this GW with those two. I might be going -4, out of those i would ship Baines honestly, eventho Moreno is extremely frustrating to own.

Money ITB tends to deceive this year i believe. Its all about form and points, not the price of the player.

If you had a midfield f Mahrez / Alli / Payet / Ozil why would you need to spend more on anyone else? 🙂 Gets you premium forwards like Costa / Ague / Kane or whatever. Wouldnt do -12 honestly, maybe -4 for Ivan, but thats about it.

Lukaku --> Vardy is the absolute dullard move. Covers the blank GW's perfectly and from GW27-GW30 Vardy certainly has great fixtures. The thing is, Lukaku has some great fixtures too over that period and can easily be benched in GW27.

I can't decide if its me who kind of wants to bring Vardy in, or the fact that I've read on here today so many people making the jump.

With the price swing imminent, I really need to decide.

Vardy and Leicester have the form.

Lukaku doesn't at the minute, could miss gw25, definitely will miss gw27, and Everton are playing like crap and the fans want Martinez out.

Been struggling with this myself Cheese but as ML leader still does not have Kun and I am chasing I think I will stick with him.

This of course can all come unstuck when said ML leader captains Kane and he goes off whilst Kun only manages 6-8

I have captained Aguero 6 of the last 7 weeks (captained Ozil vs Newcastle).

I'm capping Sanchez but have Kane as vice.

Same here. I've taken to using Bowstring's Men in Black feature as a tiebreaker. And, between us, Spurs/Hornets will have Roger East in charge, he second in the league for games per penalty given 😉

Walcott is the only alternative. Wenger was rotating them in the first half of the season and Giroud only became nailed on because of injuries. Now that players are back he could revert back

Giroud similar to start of season. They have no other option to mix it up and I think Walcott is less effective out wide

I think Sanchez will be wasted playing up front and I doubt Wenger would play him there anyway. Walcott the only real alternative

Don't do it to yourself Poch, on the Arsenal forums they have been expecting Walcott to get a game up front for weeks, it will inevitably happen soon as long as Giroud isn't scoring/Arsenal aren't winning.

Starting to really regret it already, can see Villa keeping them to a low score..

And how many do you see Leic score V City/Arse?
For me 1 in both games whereas yea Everton (see my stat below 75% chance of scoring) to get 1 at Stoke but I fancy them for 2/3 v WBA-this is why I held onto Kukaku for the 2 games.
                Granted I may be wrong.
