There’s much to chew over from the weekend’s ten matches this Monday afternoon. Riyad Mahrez re-affirms his essential status, Mesut Ozil’s return to form keeps Alexis Sanchez on the backburner, Ronald Koeman returns to three at the back, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson, Jesse Lingard and Wahbi Khazri stake a claim for our five-man midfields.

Mahrez remains locked in…
The Leicester winger rolled up to the Etihad on the back of just two assists in seven but returned to form in style on Saturday lunchtime, bagging a 14-point haul in the 3-1 win. Mahrez’ massive 64% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) continues to remain a deciding factor in our starting XIs – given his penchant for explosive returns (this was his tenth double-figure haul of the season), we can’t think about selling or even benching the Algerian in any given Gameweek for fear of a bumper haul forcing us down the overall standings.

City’s set-piece vulnerability is glaringly obvious…
With Vincent Kompany still sidelined, the City defence’s inability to deal with dead-ball situations was all too evident after Robert Huth notched twice in Leicester’s 3-1 win. Although Kompany is expected back soon, City’s upcoming schedule – a home clash with Spurs and trip to Anfield on either side of a blank – may well persuade those holding City defenders that it’s time to reconsider, with the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier pencilled in by many from Gameweek 27 onwards.

Lingard could end the fifth midfielder debate…
It’s three goals in the last five league fixtures for the United winger after yesterday’s opener at the Bridge. Lingard looks to have cemented a role in Louis van Gaal’s starting XI for the time being, starting every match from Gameweek 21 onwards on the right flank, and his output suggests the role is his to lose. At a price of just 4.2, he’s looking like the ideal cut-price fifth midfielder right now.

Ozil’s done enough to put Sanchez switch on hold…
A goal and two bonus points in Arsenal’s win at Dean Court ensured that the German’s 49% ownership will happily hold for now. Ozil headed into the weekend on the back of five blanks in six and with Alexis Sanchez offering an obvious alternative in the Gunners’ midfield, some had been eyeing up a straight swap for the explosive Chilean. For now, though, that trade looks on hold, with many likely to keep faith in Ozil and potentially miss out on a first big haul from Sanchez until he can prove himself again.

Canaries are in free-fall….
A 2-0 loss at Villa continued a dire run of results which now leaves Norwich sitting inside the bottom three. Alex Neil’s men have conceded 16 times over that period and, aside from their 5-4 home loss to Liverpool, have shown little attacking edge and netted once in the other four fixtures. With West Ham, Leicester, Chelsea and City in the next five, the Canaries are in danger of becoming whipping boys unless Neil can arrest their decline, with Dimitri Payet owners licking their lips ahead of the Hammers’ weekend trip to Carrow Road.

Liverpool always find a way to concede…
The Reds defence yet again let us down this Gameweek after blowing a 2-0 advantage at home to Sunderland with just eight minutes left on the clock. Although Jurgen Klopp’s side have now gone six matches without a shut-out, one look at the underlying numbers suggests how vulnerable they are right now. Liverpool have allowed their opponents just 15 shots inside the box over the last four Gameweeks – that’s fewer than any other side – yet they have conceded nine times, with questions again asked of Simon Mignolet’s showings between the sticks.

Butland can’t cope as Stoke’s one-man defence…
Despite another impressive display by Jack Butland, the Potters succumbed to a third straight 3-0 loss as Everton ran riot at the Britannia. With Ryan Shawcross still sidelined, Mark Hughes’ backline is looking a far cry from the solid unit that racked up seven clean sheets in nine league outings between Gameweeks 8 and 16. Certainly, a schedule that pits them against Bournemouth, Villa and Newcastle in the next three offers hope of a return to form but if Shawcross fails to recover, Butland’s save-point heroics may be as good as it gets for his 23% owners.

Sunderland are already dancing to Khazri’s tune…
Two assists in his first start for Sunderland suggests that Sunderland’s winter signing could yet keep them afloat. Khazri proved instrumental in the Black Cats’ comeback draw by teeing up Adam Johnson and Jermain Defoe, with the playmaker wasting no time in bringing his Ligue 1 form (five goals and seven assists in 20 appearances) to the table. At a price of 6.0, the Tunisian international is shaping up as another new face for us to consider for our five-man midfields.

Baggies’ goal famine is reaching critical levels…
A trip to injury-hit Newcastle seemed the perfect opportunity for West Brom to grab a vital win and boost their bid for survival. Although the Magpies were down to the bare bones at the back, Tony Pulis’ side once again failed to produce the goods and have now scored just once in the last four Gameweeks. Given that they’ve managed a mere two clean sheets in 15, the Baggies manager’s inability to strike a balance looks set to see them dragged into the relegation battle ahead of clashes with Everton, Leicester, United and Arsenal in the next five.

…and Watford aren’t faring any better…
It’s a similar story at Vicarage Road, with a 1-0 loss at Tottenham meaning that Watford have failed to score in four of the last five Gameweeks. Worryingly for Quique Sanchez Flores, his side – just like West Brom – failed to register a single shot on target at the weekend, with Odion Ighalo blanking for the fifth time in six. The Nigerian suffered his first price drop of the season last time out and with the fatigued Troy Deeney rested to the bench, Ighalo’s owners will surely be scouring the market for alternatives.

Pochettino won’t let us pick his full-backs…
Saturday’s clash with Watford once again saw Mauricio Pochettino successfully utilise his rotation tactic in the Tottenham full-back berths.
Since Gameweek 28, the Spurs boss has started Kyle Walker and weekend match-winner Kieran Tripper three and four times respectively at right-back, whilst on the left, Ben Davies has featured in the first XI on three occasions to Danny Rose’s four over the same period. With Jan Vertonghen still injured, it leaves only Toby Alderweireld – at 6.3 – as the one secure starter in the Spurs back-four right now.

…but Wenger is tempting us with Gabriel….
A 2-0 win at Bournemouth earned Arsenal a fifth clean sheet in seven yesterday afternoon. Having replaced the suspended Per Mertesacker for the recent FA Cup win over Burnley, Gabriel has remained ahead of the German in the pecking order and has now started the last three in all competitions, helping Arsene Wenger’s side to successive league shut-outs. At 4.3, the Brazilian’s minutes are clearly worth monitoring as a potential route into the league’s joint-second most resilient defence.

Dead-ball prowess has elevated Sigurdsson…
The Swansea playmaker’s recent renaissance shows no sign of slowing after he bagged a fifth goal in the last six Gameweeks at home to Palace. Sigurdsson’s expertly taken free-kick means he has scored three of those efforts via dead-ball situations, though, having netted spot-kicks against Sunderland and Everton. Although just seven of the Icelandic international’s 17 attempts during that period have arrived inside the area, his set-piece and penalty duties are keeping him firmly in the mix.

Koeman is sticking to his wing-backs experiment…
After the exploits of Fraser Forster earned Southampton a very fortuitous clean sheet in midweek, Ronald Koeman switched back to a three-man backline for the visit of West Ham. The 1-0 win took Southampton’s run to five straight shut-outs, emphasising the prospects of their chief protagonists at the back. Koeman’s decision also keeps Matt Targett’s Fantasy hopes alive for the time being. The youngster missed out with a minor injury at the weekend but, once recovered, he could reclaim that left wing-back berth, allowing Ryan Bertrand to return to the centre of defence once again.

    Defence is:

    Schmeichel Hennessey
    Bellerin Dawson Moreno Wolly Targett

    a) Bellerin to VVD/Azpi
    b) Moreno to Cedric
    c) Something else with defence
    d) Arsenal mid (Sanchez/Ozil) to Siggy

I wouldn't say that. They did look very good vs. City, but the City def isn't very good. I didn't think Leicester looked particularly dangerous versus Liverpool, they were lucky to score twice (wondergoal and lucky deflection).

I'm likely playing Bellerin over Alderweireld.

Fair point. The Arsenal defence is really underrated. Especially when Gabriel plays. I still think they'll score at least a goal though from a counter attack

I had a feeling Leicester would do well against City so brought in and started a defender....choose Fuchs over Hutu though (ouch). In hindsight fuchs' assists seem to be on huth's head! Plus he costs half a million more. But the reasons I chose him in the first place was bonus

    DDG (Henn)
    Bellerin Cresswell Azpi (Toby, Simpson)
    Mahrez Alli Özil Payet (Henderson)
    Aguero Lukaku Kane
    2 FTs, 0,1 ITB

    D) Something else

A - decent move, guaranteed games in GW27 and 30 but not on as good form recently, fixtures tempting.

B - decent move again, as above guaranteed game in GW30, form and fixtures

C - unless you have only just got Aguero, if you do this short term punt, you wont be able to get him back easily with only 0.1 ITB.

I'd go for A or B if I were you.

Hi. Are any West Ham fans around? Would appreciate some advice on Valencia. Had him in my team for the last two game weeks. Is it worth holding onto him up to GW28, or will his place come under threat. He played wide/deeper once Carroll and emineke came on, could this be a sign of things to come?

Looks like my TA meetings (Transfers Anonymous) are having an effect. Just a -4 relapse to get Aguero in, punctures a clean slate stretching back to GW16. I tell myself that doesn't count; like having a drink at Christmas or a tug when the missus is out. Pretty essential.

Now, if only I could stand up and tell the group my overall ranking has benefitted. It hasn't. Worst still, I'm missing the buzz of playing the fixtures. Overlooking Firmino's short-term SUN, avl double up because, "Why waste a precious FT getting him in and then out for the blank?", could be heard and felt on my shoulder. It wasn't even for a hit. I'm now rocking 2 x FT's most weeks like a fantasy hipster, but scouting potential signings as though I'm giving away the last 2 tickets to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

It's fear at the end of the day. Fear of discarding a player who may go on to grab a haul. For me it was Payet with nor, SUN on the horizon and for others it was Mahrez with one assist in 7. This week it is Moreno; not worth a FT in the grand scheme of things (despite being woeful), but when you have 2 x FT and nothing pressing...

The next chapter of FF paint by numbers, is DGW planning. My next transfer should either be a Leicester, Stoke, Southampton or Newcastle player, seemingly because they are 'guaranteed' to return at least 2 points in GW30. What about the weeks before and after that? Hmm, I think I'll save that inspiring decision for another week 😕

I got my rival back from 170 ahead to 135. His Barkley(c) midweek and a 74-52 score line this week and he's now 177 ahead again!

BUT he's all chipped out and played his wildcard for 3 transfers this week. Pub talk is that he's not getting Aguero to keep things interesting! So I have to stay on him as captain with this news. I also have Sanchez in now so maybe I can still do it over the DGW's...

IF I didn't already have Lukaku I'd be getting Costa in as he's playing in GW27. But I don't have a choice as I have bigger fish to fry (see below!)

      As a one-week punt? Costa I guess.
As a captain? I'd look elsewhere, but Lukaku is more likely to pick up bonus and not get booked.

Hi all - slightly fleshed out RP. Might be a similar issue for many.

Injuries have forced me to not roll my FTs this week - Zouma and Silva out have killed any pretence of fielding a team this week that'll do well.

    (Pathetic) team is:

    Butland / fodder
Borthwick- Dann Daniels / Saylor Zouma(inj)
Payet Mahrez Sanchez [Silva] / Morrison(inj)
    Lukaku (c) Kane Aguero

Think Silva is my priority (I can play Borthwick- next week and bench Zouma). Want to have someone who'll play in GW27.
Have 9.9 to play with (Silva's sale price). So with that in mind who do you reckon should come in?

    A) Eriksen - City very vulnerable vs. set plays, and decent fixtures from here on out. Slight differential as a lot of my rivals have him, too.
    B) Alli - dangerous, but a lot of my rivals have him
    C) Khazri - massive differential, this is the time of year that Sunderland wake up and he won't have been profiled as a "danger" man by teams yet. BUT he has United which could be a boring game
    D) Arnie - great fixtures, on pens/set plays but owned by my ML rival. Poor form for Stoke
    E) Shaqiri - great fixtures, differentiates me from ML rival. Poor form for Stoke.
    F) Siggy - on form, but Swansea aren't doing fantastically - playing two of the tighter defences (SOT/tot)
    G) Oscar - on pens, but subbed early vs. United.
    H) Roll FT and just play Saylor away vs. Chelsea (eek!)

Thanks for reading - any replies muchly appreciated.

Thank you SO much. That makes my choice incredibly clear.

Will wait until the end of the week / until Silva looks like he's dropping beneath 9.9 but that's pretty settled.

Thanks Rhinos! Do you reckon he'll sort it out?

My biggest issue is that my ML rival (I'm chasing a 50pt gap) has Arnie too and will almost def not remove him. So I need to go outside the box - hence my inclusion of Khazri and, I guess, Mr. Eriksen too.

A or E from those. Arnie will hopefully be fully fit soon and the whole team will be elevated by the return of the king (ShawX).

Yeah I hope so, Hurricane - I'm reticent to get Arnie as I'm chasing a ML leader with him. I think it looks like Eriksen for now.

Eriksen is a really good shout too and more of a differential. Khazri could be a good prospect soon, but not yet imo.

    I had a terrible week.

I’ve made a knee-jerk transfer and swapped Dawson for Ivanovic, so that I can set and forget. I guess I shouldn’t have bought Austin in; can see the error of my ways now, so I’ll wait another week and swap him for Vardy. Ho, hum…

    Forster
    Ivanovic | Williams | Daniels
    Sanchez | Ozil | Payet | Alli
    Aguero | Kane | Austin

    Hennessey | King | Cathcart | Simpson

Haha, I had an awful one, too - I was on San(c)hez and put my phone on silent for the entirety of the Arsenal game hoping I'd get the fantasyfootballfix notification for the much-hoped-for Sanchez hattie.

Very close to a rage transfer, too. Ivan is a sweet choice! Don't despair; Austin could be a great choice.

So im 99k OR bench boost and triple captain intact. What's a realistic target for the end of season rank? I'd like to think top 10k is still possible. This season seems different though. The highest scoring plauers are entraunched with high ownership making gains tricky

Yeah it's anyone's guess really. Those two chips might bring you 20-25pts each if you're lucky, that would give you a healthy rank boost.

On my WC and Both of these options work out bang on the money so which one sounds better? Tough one I know...

    A - Cech, Elliott, Coleman
    B - Butland, Fabianski, Bellerin

I want to go A but already have B. I'm thinking to stick with B because I will have Butland for GW 30 and also because I would lose 0.4 is this a silly reason and has his and stokes good days now finished?

      Hey man - tough one!

      B here.
Butland is a king. I'd maybe consider just keeping him and putting a cheap keeper (Elliot if you want a playing cheapie), using the extra money to strengthen elsewhere.

      Hope this helps.

Any ideas, radical or otherwise, to do with this lot?
1 FT, 0.2 in the bank
Out of all the cups so a hit not an issue

    Fabianski (Schmeichel)

    Johnson, Daniels, Ward, (Dawson, Alderweireld)

    Mahrez, Alli, Sanchez, Payet, (Barkley)

    Kane, Aguero, Vardy

Not too fussed with defensive transfers, worked a half-decent rotation with the five I've got.
Thinking Barkley has had his time and needs to go. Not sure how I feel about the standard 7mil-ish Mids (Wijnaldum, Arnie etc.) though.

      Hey man

Barkley has a decent fixture next week (WBA without Evans and Dawson begins to sound incredibly lucrative) but I can see why you feel like you need to remove him.

TBH, I think you should roll the transfer, there's very little wrong with your team - you don't need to make one - and make your changes in GW27 once things have settled after the long break after next weekend.

See my above - I have the same dilemma too!

I have been advised by the expert in these parts that Eriksen is your man. See the following tables to identify said expert:

      http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/1373/

      http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/11412/

I know you have Alli though, which makes things interesting - maybe plump for Arnie, he has excellent fixtures and is on set plays. I am not touching him due to the fact that my ML leader has him and I'm chasing a lead.

Hope that helps. Maybe you can see something else in the tabs.

"A third maximum BP haul for Petr Cech was earned following Arsenal’s 2-0 victory at AFC Bournemouth. The Arsenal goalkeeper ensured the Cherries’ attack could not find a way past him as Cech made four saves and 10 recoveries, plus the Czech Republic international created a big chance."

What was this big chance he created? I'm struggling to remember
