We round off the day with our usual pre-Gameweek members article, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the midweek round of fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Manchester City’s penalty shoot-out win over Liverpool at Wembley has perhaps had an effect on your armband decisions this week. With Sergio Aguero playing 120 minutes on Sunday ahead of an Anfield re-match with the Reds, the Argentine is – for once – amongst the chasing pack behind Jamie Vardy.

With West Brom set to pay visit on Tuesday evening, the Foxes frontman tops our Captain Poll for the second successive Gameweek due to his outstanding home consistency – Vardy has scored or assisted in 11 of 13 appearances in front of his own supporters.

At the time of writing, Romelu Lukaku and Mesut Ozil tie for second spot with 14% each. After enjoying the weekend off, the Belgian now faces a trip to Villa – he bagged a brace in a 4-0 win over the Midlands outfit earlier this season and should be fully refreshed to take advantage of Remi Garde’s strugglers.

Meanwhile, Ozil delivered a goal and assist at Old Trafford and now looks for a third double-figure haul in four at home to a Swansea side with one clean sheet on their travels.

As for Aguero, he faces a Liverpool defence with just one clean sheet in the last seven Gameweeks. The Argentine has already netted against Jurgen Klopp’s side in the league and with the Reds sweating over the availability of a number of central defenders, he could be in line for returns at Anfield in a match that City surely have to win to remain in the title race.

There’s a handful of differentials lurking further down our poll for those willing to take a punt. Diego Costa is selected by just 7% for Chelsea’s trip to out-of-sorts Norwich, though there remains question marks over his minutes after Guus Hiddink admitted he could be rested for one of the next two matches with the Champions League clash against PSG in mind.

Marko Arnautovic will be looking to replicate his weekend 15-point return at home to a Newcastle outfit that have lost five road trips on the bounce. Riyad Mahrez, Alexis Sanchez and Ross Barkley offer viable alternatives to their aforementioned team-mates, whilst United’s man of the moment, Marcus Rashford, seeks a third successive brace at Old Trafford as Watford pay visit on Wednesday night.

Next up, we now delve into the data over the last four matches to shed further light on the situation and assess the validity of the current crop of poll results.

    Bellerin | Jags | Huth
    Payet | Barkley | Ozil | Mahrez
    Vardy | Kane | Kun

    McCarthy | Bertrand | Ali | Dier

    0.1ITB 2FT

GW30 Blanks: Jags, Payet, Barkley, Bellerin*, Ozil*
0.1 Short of doing Bellerin > Kompany. Plan to have 3 city players in case there DGW is GW34.
Payet > Sterling, Bellerin > 4.9 (Wollscheild, Daniels, Williams, Cedric)

Morning all, couple of shameless plugs to start the day. Firstly, I had my 1st FPL podcast appearance last night on FanFeud's weekly show:

    http://www.blog.fanfeud.co.uk/2016/02/29/weekly-fantasy-football-show-gameweek-28/

I am genuinely alarmed that my scouse accent has almost entirely disappeared (though I was doing my best "phone voice"), and I seem to be doing a weird inhalation thing after every sentence towards the start - I'm putting it down to nerves.

Secondly, my latest FantasyYIRMA article, as I debate a rather bold move on which I am still undecided:

    http://fantasyyirma.com/2016/02/29/wave-goodbye-to-tottenhams-dele-alli/

Thoughts on either/both would be hugely appreciated. Enjoy!

I was proper nervous the first time I did the scoutcast. Still get a bit nervous going on but usually calm down a bit when talking to Jonty/Mark before it starts.

Still not a patch on the other guys when it comes to speaking - it's a lot more difficult than it looks!

Indeed, I did settle into it, but the first few minutes were terrifying, I just flew through my first answer without really thinking. I think you're excellent on the scoutcast Andy, all points are well considered and clear - a natural!

Any feedback on my attempts would be great, as it was a "guest appearance" it could well be a one off.

Guess listening will have to wait, since yea... work. In any case i think losing Alli for Eriksen is a decent option. I was debating that last week. If i had enough funds i would do it this GW, but i am lacking .6 to do the straight swap. This means i will just sit tight and... No idea.

I do think that Alder can lose his slot to Daniels and bring in Eriksen for Alli. That would be the best option in my eyes, BUT, that way in gw 30 you gained nothing if you lack starting 11.

        1. Doolittle
          • 13 Years
          9 years, 9 months ago

Cheers, Alde to Daniels could have some legs. I'd definitely do a straight Alli to Eriksen if I could afford it, what makes me hesitant is the use of both FTs, and I don't want to be caught out if Arsenal end up with a blank GW30. I'm going to be debating this all day I feel.

Thats the thing , i messed up with doing Cresswell > VvD instead of Ivanovic to VvD cuz he was on the bench. That way i could have had the funds, but i am playing Ivanovic now instead of Bellerin. So, bad decision i made is now pissing me off.

Will just have to sit tight i believe.

Cheers mate, I think with GW30 there's a bit more flexibility than expected, I only have Payet blanking as it stands (though do have Bellerin and Ozil). It's making me contemplate moves that I never expected I'd be able to; that may be a bad thing.

But may also limit your future transfers, as Eriksen is a fair bit more expensive than Alli.

I'm just looking at my team, I can get Eriksen in quite easily, but then I'd not be able to get in a city midfielder or defender (Then again, do I want to?)

The City issue is an interesting one, I'm looking at them myself, but I'm worried we're being blinded by the DGW - they've been really poor recently. Then again, I'll probably WC GW33, so can assess then.

Does a teams position in the table affect the number of goals they score?

Any chance Leicester may look for a safe 1-0 win rather than go for an all out attack?
Similarly, with Spurs and Arsenal chasing they'll need to score a few goals. Arsenal more so, because they need to improve their goal difference.
City too if they need to catch up?

    Thoughts?

LEI doesn't possess the ball enuf for "all out attacks", they're more about countering. 1-0 seems like a logical score.2-0 sounds better.

Aguero(C) seems to be going under the radar this week. Yes he's played 120 mins on Sunday but so did liverpool's makeshift dedence. IF he plays a full 90 I'd definitely fancy him against this liverpool side. Big if though.

      Ifs and buts

And, he could definitely do damage to Pool.

I'll probably not be captaining him though

He has proven this many times, he doesn't need 90. I believe he will be subbed perhaps 60-70 min mark, depending on the scoreline, but even so I am captaining him.

As good choice as any, but not clear cut. Will probably be a differential though, with most people capping Özil or Vardy
