It’s time to make our way to the Weekly Shop this evening, as we assess the player lists of our partner games to pinpoint the likely targets that will make up our own weekly squads.

As always, the player analysis is split into two sections: I’ll break down the key targets that no squad can do without in “Better Buys”, before seeking out those one-shot “Poundstretcher” prospects that can provide us points, whilst freeing up funds.

For this week’s selection, we’re focusing on the FantasyBet and DraftKing player lists.

Better Buys

Southampton have now conceded in back-to-back matches after keeping six consecutive clean sheets but upcoming visitors Sunderland face a long trip down to the South coast and failed to net at West Ham in their last away trip. Fraser Forster (FantasyBet 4.5m, DraftKings $4,200 ) has made just two saves in each of his last four appearances so there is room for improvement for the English keeper and his shot-stopping abilities are likely to be needed with the Black Cats fighting to maintain their Premier League status.

Chelsea have not been at their usual level defensively at Stamford Bridge this campaign and have conceded in their last seven at home. Nonetheless, Branislav Ivanovic’s (FantasyBet 6.5m, DraftKings $4,200 ) recent attacking form, notching two goals and three assists since Jose Mourinho’s departure, makes the full-back a tempting prospect against a Stoke side that have failed to score in four of their last seven away trips.

The 2-1 win at the Emirates last night was Swansea’s first in five outings and a home tie with Norwich provides an opportunity for the Welsh side to distance themselves further from a relegation battle. Gylfi Sigurdsson (FantasyBet 7m, DraftKings $ 6,800) was rested for the first half in North London but appeared from the bench to deliver the assist for the winning goal. The Icelander had netted five goals in the previous eight matches and with set-piece duties also in his locker, looks the prime candidate to include from the Swans.

While Liverpool may have struggled for consistency this season, Jurgen Klopp has at least got them scoring in the league – only Leicester have held the Reds over the last five, while they’ve netted 16 goals in the other four encounters. Roberto Firmino (FantasyBet 8m, DraftKings Forward $6,300 ) has four goals and as many assists in that run, while James Milner (FantasyBet 6.5m, DraftKings $6,300) has netted three and served up a trio of assists, so both are worth looking at ahead of a trip to a Crystal Palace side that have shipped 21 goals in nine matches.

Sergio Aguero (FantasyBet 13m, DraftKings $8,600 ) has now blanked in successive league outings but seven goals in the preceding six matches make it difficult to ignore the Argentine as basement-dwellers Aston Villa roll up to the Etihad. Manchester City have looked out-of-sorts recently, though the 3-0 loss at Anfield should be a wake-up call for a team still capable of challenging for the title. Villa have conceded 11 goals over their last three so Manuel Pellegrini’s side should see this tie as chance to re-discover some attacking rhythm.

Poundstretchers

Swansea have kept just six clean sheets this campaign but, crucially, five of those have arrived at the Liberty Stadium. Lukasz Fabianski (FantasyBet 4.5m, DraftKings $3,800 ) has only conceded more than once in a single outing over the last seven so the visit of a Norwich side that have blanked in four of their last five away trips offer a promising opportunity to notch another shut-out. Alberto Paloschi (FantasyBet m, DraftKings $3,900 ) is also worth considering if you plan to save funds in forward positions – the January signing was rested midweek but should return against the Canaries, having scored at Tottenham last weekend.

After the loss to Bournemouth, Ronald Koeman may look to shake up his defence after hauling off Maya Yoshida in the first-half at Dean Court. Should the Saints boss roll out his wing-back set-up for the visit of Sunderland, Matt Targett (FantasyBet 4m, DraftKings $3,700 ), who missed the Tuesday night defeat, could offer a bargain route into the Saints backline.

The match at Goodison features two budget-friendly midfielders that have both been in convincing goal scoring form. Aaron Lennon (FantasyBet 5.5m, DraftKings $3,400 ) has scored four in six league appearances for the Toffees, while Michail Antonio’s (FantasyBet 5m, DraftKings $5,100 ) move to right wing-back did little to dent his attacking instinct, scoring the winner against Spurs, a fifth goal in ten outings for the Hammers.

Stoke’s Xherdan Shaqiri (FantasyBet 6.5m, DraftKings $6,100 ) is an option worth considering for the trip to Stamford Bridge, particularly in Draftkings, having recorded the most crosses (47) of any midfielder over the last four. The Swiss international may not even need to score to secure a points haul, then, though with a goal and two assists over his last three outings, should be a key threat to the Chelsea defence.

For the Blues, Bertrand Traore (FantasyBet 5m, DraftKings $2,800) has emerged as an inviting option with Guus Hiddink backing the youngster for a forward role ahead of Loic Remy and Pato while hinting he may rest Diego Costa. Three goals in three substitute appearances and an assist against Norwich makes it clear why the midfielder may keep his more experienced team-mates on the bench.

These are the contenders for my weekly contest lineups heading into the midweek fixtures. Tomorrow I’ll also bring you up to date on my progress in FantasyBet, as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

    Lost on old post!

    Hi all

    1 week punt for GW30 - any midfielder at 9.3 or below:

    What do you reckon between:
    a) Ritchie
    b) Sterling
    c) Silva
    d) Arnie
    e) Walters

    Ideally just to use once and forget. Giggity.

        Thanks Dusan - I'm thinking of him because I can use him for that 1 fixture vs. Swansea, which could be a goalfest (they're the two kind of teams that are either quiet or explode) and then I can happily have him as 5th mid.

        Cheers again

        Oh man, I was actually thinking of him as a flair pick lol

        I just don't know about this guy. He can occasionally get forward but if Yaya doesn't play he's really defensive.

        Let's see how it pans out - thanks for bringing him into the thought pie, though 🙂

      Ali's home form is pretty terrible but he's had good rest when many other players haven't and Ozil is on set-pieces so is always dangerous.

      Some of them run 9miles a game apparently.

      I'd be a little weary if i had to do that every Tuesday/Sat!

      I think Hart plus the little extra cash is the call. Kompany's injury risk has been putting me off.

      Hart + Silva + Aguero is what I'm after over the next couple GWs.

        u think getting hart now for a hit not worth it right, the -4 covers his potential cs.
        maybe best just use the 2ft and get hart next gw ft?

    why did yesterday fook everything up

    City looked so poor and Sanchez looked pretty good

    then there's Eriksen to factor in, don't know what to do.

    Of course Smalling being out would make it irrelevant

    Schmeichel / Hennessey
    Ivanovic, Williams, Alderweireld / Bellerin, Wollscheid
    Özil, Payet, Mahrez, Alli / Gosling
    Aguero, Kane, Vardy

    2 FT, 3.1 ITB

    A) Gosling ---> Sigurdsson
    B) Bellerin + Gosling ---> Kompany/van Dijk + Sigurdsson
    C) Bellerin + Payet + Gosling ---> 4.7 def. + Silva + Sigurdsson (-4)
    D) other idea !?

    If I assume that Arsenal will beat Hull, then is Ozil->Silva for free a bad transfer?

    Otherwise, it would be Eriksen->Silva.

    Eriksen has Villa next and Arsenal will(assumed) have a blank.

    (I really want Silva, chasing big time. So not doing either transfer is out of the question 😀 )

    Thanks.

    Regarding the hot topic on this FPL season, I think that consistency, ownership and value have been the three main factors that make it unique to other seasons (apart from the addition of FPL chips of course).

    Consistency: Form and fixtures seem to mean nothing. How many (C) fails have we seen this season? Surely someone has already done a comparison to previous seasons? It must be a hell of a lot lower this year.

    Ownership: Take Mahrez for example. Nearly every time he has seen a large number of transfers out this season he delivers and punishes the sellers. We can say this for a lot of other players like Butland (early in the season), Ozil and others. Likewise when a large number of FPL managers bring in a form player he dries up almost instantly. Such as Kolarov, Firmino, Gomis, Kane (to an extent recently), Sanchez among others. What we're left with is a kind of fear-based mass ownership where managers are terrified to ditch highly owned players like Mahrez even after a series of blanks, because if it does not work out the significance to your rank is so big. Hence why we seem to have a template of highly owned players (Aguero, Kane, Vardy, Alli, Mahrez, Payet, etc) with a few differentials that we hope to overtake our opponents with. This is feasible because even as little as a 10 point gain in a GW can mean a huge jump in the ranks while dropping 10 points in a week won't ruin the season.

    Value: Each year the concept of value governs our team selection, even prior to GW1 where we try to make the most of a 100m budget. This year it means nothing so long as the likes of Hazard, Sanchez and other heavy hitters fail to justify their price tag. So we're left with an open window to take any player showing a hint of form, and this takes out a major challenge of the game that would account for some of the top players each year. Players that would increase their Team Value so that when the wildcard came around they would have an extra 2/3 mil over the majority and get in perhaps an in-form Hazard/ Sanchez/ KDB rather than settling for an 7.5 - 8.0m player that might not score as well.

    Just my thoughts on the season as a whole. I've been doing pretty okay, but I must admit I do find it a bit boring that the more premium players are just not there this year. You almost feel obligated to go with the masses on Captaincy each week just out of pure fear that you'll slide down the ranks as we've seen happen to so many veterans and decent players of the game.

      The main big difference and biggest factor is that the high scoring players

      Ozil , Vardy , Mahrez , Lukaku , Payet et etc have continued to score with no real drop off so those that got on early and then didn't sell because of fixtures have stayed high
      Anyone looking for a differential with fixtures and stats Sanchez , Walcott , sterling has fallen further behind

      Good points, Bow. I think you're right, there's been much less (apologies for corporate jargon but I've just left work) resource management this year, much more "who is getting points". That's what has let "luck" emerge as a factor (see "casual" taunts ad nauseam).

      Repost this when it's not bottomed - really interesting thought-provoker.

      Also its hardly been an explosive season. A brief flash of high scores from stalwarts (e.g. Sanchez and Aguero) but nothing on a semi-consistent basic (if that makes sense!).

      Of course you expect flares up from a random like Wijnaldum or Wickham etc. but the low but consistent scorers have been the way this season.
