Friday afternoon continues with our usual pre-Gameweek members article, as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s five fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Once again, Sergio Aguero is the clear leader in our poll. After bagging a brace in City’s 4-0 thrashing of Villa, the Argentine has collected over 56% of the votes cast ahead of a trip to a Norwich side that’s shipped 12 goals in their last four at Carrow Road.

Somewhat surprisingly, Harry Kane has been earmarked by just 20% for a trip to Villa. The Tottenham frontman has netted four times in his last quartet of road trips and is now up against a dire defence that’s conceded 15 times in four and have one foot in the Championship.

Below that duo, Riyad Mahrez (7%) and Jamie Vardy (5%) are shaping us as major armband differentials for Leicester’s home encounter with a Newcastle outfit that’s lost six on the bounce away from home. Whilst Vardy has struggled for returns of late, with a goal and assist in five, Mahrez has stepped up his consistency and produced points in five of the last seven Gameweeks, including an 11-point haul at Watford last time out.

Beyond them, the likes of Josh King, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Christian Eriksen, David Silva and Dele Alli are have the potential to spring a surprise, with 2% or less backing so far.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Anyway, it's really just about them conceding comparatively more than Norwich - certainly a trend that's been the case for a while.

Not sure on how to feel. McClaren had to go. Fact. I just can't see why Rafa would sign up for 3 years, albeit with a relegation clause. He's way above our league even by his worst critics. Maybe his reputation has fallen recently. One thing that comes to my mind is his cup record is fantastic and I see this as the main reason for his appointment. The move does lack long term stability and his lack of experience in relegation compared to BFS is a worry.

Nevertheless I'm still pleased for following reasons.
    -McClaren was taking us down.
-Rafa is the biggest name we could get and if this doesn't galvanise the club then nothing will.

I'm a cautiously optimistic but 2009 wasn't long ago and this season has been very similar to that. We got Shearer in around this time, bought Nolan (Shelvey) to add some grit in the team and Saylor /Collocini were our CBS.

    Schmeichel
    Wolly Williams VVD
    Mahrez Alli Siggy
    Kane Aguero Vardy
    (Elliot Sanchez Payet Moreno Dawson)

I think it's one of those weeks where you pick who you like and don't kick yourself! There really is nothing to call between them.

I think for me it comes down to numbers, Tottenham have scored 24 away, City only 13.

When looking at last 4 stats, it's important to consider who they played against in those games imo. So here's a side sheet for the article:

    City: LEI TOT liv AVL
    Spurs: mci SWA whu ARS

    Norwich: WHM lei CHE swa
    Villa: LIV stk EVE mci

Villa have faced tough opposition imo, so their defensive stats are expected to be bad. It's a close call this week between Kun and Kane...

Leicester have been poor offensively recently, Chelsea haven't been tearing up trees either...
