Next up this Friday evening, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article, casting an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

Captain Poll

Despite failing to score in four of his last five league outings, Sergio Aguero is the top candidate in this week’s Captain Poll as Man City make their way to Bournemouth. Just over 30% are backing the Argentine to produce the goods at the Vitality Stadium, though he’s scored just four times on his travels all season.

Dimitri Payet heads the chasing pack with over 16% of the votes cast. The West Ham playmaker has produced points in four of his last five appearances and carried his domestic form onto the international stage with another stunning free-kick for France over the last few days.

Alexis Sanchez and Harry Kane hover around the 8% mark. Kane has the best form of any player in the top-flight, with five goals and an assist in four, and visits a Liverpool defence with just two clean sheets in ten. Sanchez has the better fixture – at home to Watford – and has hinted at a return to form with a goal and two assists over the last three.

Roberto Firmino – who was ranked second in the Poll earlier this week – has dropped down the pecking order as doubts remain over his availability. The Liverpool midfielder faces a late assessment as he looks to continue the form that has racked up five goals and four assists in his previous six. Although a visit from Spurs is no easy task, Firmino has produced double-figures in three of his last four at Anfield.

Mesut Ozil (6%) is lower down as Arsenal prepare for the visit of a Watford defence with two clean sheets on their travels all season, whilst Cesc Fabregas (5%) is in the mix ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Villa after he scored twice against West Ham last time out.

Elsewhere, Leicester duo Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy remain real differentials with just 2% and 1% of the votes respectively ahead of the home clash with Southampton

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

Do you know what, the more I use it the more I like the new site, even on mobile. I moaned at first but it's actually better, just different so needed some adjustment time.

I have come round to it too. Somehow I seem to have had a headache every night since it came in though. I cannot beleive it is a coincidence.

      It is still slower though

I've spent a lot of time over the years in site design and user experience - the redesign is MILES better in terms of experience than the old version. What happens (VERY often) is that users get used to design/navigation/flow and even if it's poor, the desire to access the content cancels out the lack of usability - once all of you 'don't like it ' crew re-learn the navigation you'll wonder how you ever put up with the other version. Very nicely done FFS team....

I'm not in england anymore so my bbc site is still the old one you had but with adverts. Can you believe it, adverts! They don't tell you about that when you're paying your license.

Hmmmm.. So with this news of Firmino being a doubt (on wildcard) I am considering putting Bolasie or Barkley in as a placeholder and then selling after 33 for either coutinho or firmino (with more info about who is better)

    Sound like a good idea?

Glad I'm not the only one. The wildcard doesn't look as aesthetically pleasing but home v spurs isn't even a good fixture anyway and then we have a DGW to counteract home to Stoke

        1. Jay_
          10 years, 4 months ago

Yep, Lanzini in as a 5th mid but playing over Bolasie this week makes the team look better this week, worth considering, cheap, benchable in 33. Enables.

You could go down that route but Bolasie to Lallana in 34 rather than Firmino. Will miss out on United defender though, but gain a ft in 35

I'm actually looking at the following, which is very similar..most notable difference being Martial to Rashford

              Robles - Darlow
              Otamendi - Dann - Sakho - Janmaat - Bellerin
              Antonio - Payet - Sanchez - Ozil - Coutinho
              Lukaku - Aguero - Rashford

              2.2m itb

              Dann > Smalling in GW34

would have 9 for GW35 as it stands and 2 FT to work with.

I had some beautiful drafts with Rashford in mate but the sad fact is he's just a no go with the Rooney news. I just got Martial and worked around it. For me personally I wouldn't mind having Rashford but only if he was the stand out 8th attacker and enabling a superstar midfield of KDB in for Antonio in your case. Too much of a gamble for me mate, if he don't play it sort of neutralises the affect of the chips.

hmm..I think Rashford is more nailed than you're describing and Rooney said he's probably 8-9 days from returning to full training and he's going to play with the U21s first

also I'm tempted to sell Aguero to be honest..

But surely Rashford will play, but I don't think nobody expects him to play 180 minutes. Even if Rooney will be back, it would be mad to bench such an excellent form player like Rashford.

Mostly money, the money I have in the bank now is for Smalling and Firmino in gw34. If I went Antonio I couldn't afford those two later.

    Bench one from

    A. Alli

    B. Vardy

    C. Siggy

Also, if use WC on any given GW is it true that chip playing is not allowed?

Wildcards count as chips, which is why the overwhelming plan around here is to wildcard gw33, then bench boost gw34. For myself, I'm holding out to WC gw36, and BB gw37.

You still have AOA! go on you pro, if I still had my AoA I'd be saving it for GW38. I just can't drop Alli and Arnie has burnt me recently 🙂 it is a close call I'm just leaning towards Alli on form and the confidence the young lads showing.

hey, i'd appreciate an opinion or two:
I live in Aus and im going camping now for 4 days with no reception or internet, meaning i'll miss the first 3.5 days of gw33 wildcard (leaving before the deadline).
Did plan on a gw33 wc but i'm now thinking it may be best to pull the trigger right now?
I'll be missing price drops and rises if i decide to still do a gw33 wc.
    Thoughts?

You could easily WC now. There have been so few price changes this week but I think they will kick in a lot more next weeks as the first DGW's will be in close proximity.

They have the same number of matches during this stretch, so who do you think will score the most points between GW33 and GW36:

    A) KDB
    B) Silva
    C) Firmino
    D) Coutinho

That's probably the last decision I have - at least at this point - on my WC side.

Yep. He's tempting because he might be hard for most to fit into their team.

So, at this point, I'm willing to swing for the proverbial fences and go with this for a BB GW34:

        Darlow - Hennessey
Bellerin - Rojo - Jags - Sakho - Dawson (or Janmaat)
        Sanchez - Ozil - KDB - Payet - Barkley
        Aguero - Lukaku - Deeney

I think the link just can't make it all the way to the comment, it just goes to the top of the page. When I post this reply it won't show my actual reply, it will just refresh all the way up to the top of the page again.
