Welcome to the first of our Rate My Wildcard Team articles of the week. These will showcase the thoughts of one of the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors team on their wildcard. Hopefully some of their key issues will mirror your own. Feel free to use this article thread to put forward your wildcard teams and to help others with their wildcard related issues. I’ve picked the short straw to start the first discussion.

My Wildcard Team

Mignolet Robles

Bellerin Gabriel Sakho Jagielka  Ward

De Bruyne Sanchez Lingard Coutinho Payet

Mitrovic Lukaku Aguero

0.2m in the bank

Strategy

I’m currently keeping a close eye on price changes and drafting in players I’m considering as they expect to rise and ditching those set for a fall. As it stands Harry Kane, Riyad Mahrez and Christian Fuchs are in my squad but some if not all of them will depart.

Above is the option I’m considering the most, going all out with  15 double players in double Gameweek 34, having three Everton and one Palace player in place for double Gameweek 33 and for double Gameweek 35 I’ve nine players with two transfers to take me to 11. I’m fine taking a hit if an injury lets me down here. I also have six players in place for double Gameweek 37 with  a view to fielding 10 to 11 with a hit that Gameweek.

My bench boost will be played in double Gameweek  34 and triple captaincy in double Gameweek 37.

Key issues

Dropping Kane

Given the high price tags of Kevin De Bruyne, Alexis Sanchez, Liverpool midfielders plus Arsenal’s key defender Hector Bellerin, as well as Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane looks unsustainable. Going without him scares me but to put him in I have to make sacrifices across my whole team. I may very well get him back in for Gameweek 35 though if he punishes me too much. However, if dropping Kane for double Gameweeks 33 and 34 I can be safe in the knowledge that no one will captain him. Shunning Kane also allows for De Bruyne, who looked sharp against Bournemouth and has a great home tie in Gameweek 33, certainly on paper more enticing than Kane’s match up with Van Gaal’s all out defence tactics.

Sanchez over Ozil

Alexis Sanchez looks not only to have won this battle but looks to be the best captaincy pick for double Gameweek 34. I’ve seen enough, he’s in my team.

Punting on Mitrovic

I’ve also seen enough of Newcastle to know that they only have one strategy – get the ball to Alexsandar Mitrovic’s head. With two home games I’m hoping (praying) he can outscore Kane. This is a very rare maverick decision for me and I’m getting scared already thinking of being without Harry.

Ignoring Manchester Utd Defenders

Having no Manchester United defender in particular worries me with two great home games. But none are nailed on except David De Gea and the over priced Chris Smalling. De Gea is an option, but requires surgery in Gameweek 35 when I have no goalies. Jesse Lingard looks to be my only Man Utd player.

Jagielka to fly the dullard flag

If I’m not going to get James Milner then Phil Jagielka is the next best thing for this dullard. Members may note though that in terms of goal attempts he may offer some surprises during the doubles.

Leaving Leicester alone

Of my soon to be ditched Leicester pair of Mahrez and Fuchs it is the defender that worries me the most. Offloading Fuchs’ almost now guaranteed clean sheets and bonus each game will be a wrench. He is also outscoring Mahrez on current form. If any single gameweekers stay he is in pole position.

I am tinkering with this team at the moment.

    DDG / Mignolet
    Bellering / Gabriel / Delaney / Simpson / Mangala?!
    Sanchez / Cout / Bolasie / Mahrez / Payet
    Kun / Kane / Lukaku

Leaves me with .8 itb as well.

Now, another issue is if i should ship Kane for Martial and have 3.2 itb to upgrade Bolasie to Firmino dgw 34 OR just ship Mahrez for a DGW'er and get Firmino regardless.

    Thoughts?

Only my opinion dude, not saying I'm right.

Bellerin is class, Gabriel is a huge rotation risk, The city defence looks poor and even Mangala is at risk of being benched. Palace defence is awful. Simpson is a decent shout at his price.

I just do not see any other good defensive options. CPL defender is purely for the number of games and an very ODD CS possibly. Got 6.1 for the last defender and really do not think Coleman is the way to go 😀 Maybe i am wrong.

I think it looks like that to me because you have such an expensive front 3 and keepers.

You've done a good job with the back 5 with the little money available

I'm definitely going to get Martial for Kane - has to be worth it with Man United's fixtures in GW34. I'm not convinced by your defence - Gabriel and Mangala are probably (?) rotation risks. I've owned Mahrez since the beginning of the sesason, but I think I'm going to risk selling him, because Leicester look like they're planning to grind out 1-0 wins until the end of the season now.

Gabriel has played 90 minutes last 5 games. Missed one in the last 9? I am pretty sure he is nailed on. Mangala depends on Kompany news, i just dont see any other decent defensive options out there and i do have the funds .

Is Mangala a better option than Clichy, do you think? Pellegrini seems to like Demichelis.

Maybe you're right on Gabriel, I'm worried that Mertesacker might be given a game though.

I do think he is, eventho Clichy played most matches as well lately. Kolarov scoring in 94th minute will get him some game time i reckon. Not a lot, but some.

It's annoying that none of the City defenders are really nailed apart from Otamendi who is way too expensive! Other option is I suppose not to bother with a City defender at all; I've got Simpson in my team at the moment, maybe I should just keep him.

I don't agree your defence is "below par", but I'd question Mangala.

I do think you're overspending in nets though, so perhaps you could use that money elsewhere. A Smalling double-up??

I'd personally want to keep Kane (and am), but I have accepted moving Mahrez on now, so maybe do that.

Care to take a look at mine below?

Well to be fair i do think that Mignolet is kind of a waste there, but other option is Darlow? (Just because he has a gw 35) and i do not want to spend a FT on a gw 35 keeper. makes no sense to do that.

Mangala is questionable, but i can pick almost any other player really (6.1)
Need to debate this, i really do not see a lot of good defensive options... 🙁

Completely agree. And CS have been really difficult to predict this year, outside of the likes of Arsenal, Spurs and recently Leicester, so I'm not sure it matters.

Hopefully if they play two games you get a minimum of 4, and one lucky CS and you're almost double figures.

That was my thinking. I've not spent tons on my defence either.

Well i do think Man U will bring at least one cs from their DGW thats why i am keen on having either DDG or smalling... Double up would be too much i think because other GK has to be Darlow than? Kinda of negates everything...

I currently have the same GKs as you and think they can be a nice differential for a BB 34, expecting a 2-3 CSs between them.

Defense could perhaps be better - I got Bellerin + Monreal + otamendi, ward and simpson - but this lets you keep Kane which I don't (Mitrovic for me).

Could you go Mahrez > Lanzini/Lingard to fund Bolasie > Firmino GW34?

    Hennessey Cech*
    Fuchs Dawson* Targett Williams Alderweireld
    Firmino* Mahrez Özil* Silva* Lingard*
    Lukaku* Agüero* Kane
    0FT 0.5m

    My team:

    De Gea, Mignolet
    Souare, Darmian, Bellerin, Gabriel, Sakho
    Sanchez, Toure, Firmino, Wijinaldum, Payet
    Martial, Mitrovic, Lukaku
    Bank: 2.5

    Strategy:
DEF: Doubling up on United and Arsenal defense and expecting big things from them in the DGW. Mignolet has reasonable fixtures and can be a good option in 35 and 36. Will bring in Van Aanholt for Souare in 35 and Azpilicueta for Gabriel in 37.
MID: Going with a solid midfield ignoring Lanzini, Lingard and 2nd Liverpool MF. I think Newcastle have something to play for and Wij and Mitrovic will provide attacking returns. Toure over KdB because I need the cash in the bank for Costa in GW 35. Will get Lanzini in for GW 37.
FWD: I'm a United fan and think Martial will be heavily involved in all goals United score from here on. Mitrovic will continue to score. Lukaku because of DGW 33 and 34. Couldn't get Aguero and get a decent squad. Aguero will score, but I think there's more bang for the buck from other striking options. Costa for Lukaku in GW35.

    Transfers:
GW 35: PVA + Costa for Souare + Lukaku
GW 37: Azpi + Lanzini for Gabriel + Toure
    GW 38: Haven't decided!

    Thoughts:
Would love to get another Everton player, but I'm not convinced about Barkley. Lennon/Deulofeu/Mirallas - rotation risk. Coleman can offer attacking returns but little to no chance of CS. One more option I pondered is Welback over Martial and Zabaleta over Gabriel. But hard to look past a 4.3 price tag with a good set of fixtures until end of season. Iwobi looks tempting as well. Feedback please?

Yeah, that is something I toyed with as well. In my mind, Lanzini is still a punt while Payet with his set piece duties is a more reliable source of points. KdB's minutes was another factor - I am not sure if he will play all games after having just returned from a lengthy injury layoff.

I still might choose the option you suggested, appreciate the feedback.

Trying to be as balanced as possible, the one thing that is making me think Lingard could score more is their easier fixtures, but I think we've got more goals in us. And as far as I know, Milner is on pens.

    Ok boys...

This one is as tight on budget as it gets. 0.0ITB, so any risk of a rise I'm gonna have to finalise one or two moves immediately. Most notably areas where I have value tied up, such as Ozil (Mahrez has already gone)

    Mignolet - Robles
    Bellerin - Fuchs - Sakho - Gabriel - Delaney
Sanchez - De Bruyne - Payet - Coutinho - Lanzini
    Aguero - Kane - Lukaku

    3 DGWers in GW33
    13 DGWers in GW34
10 Starters for GW35 with 2FT to play
7 DGWers in GW37 (for now), although I'd likely have to sell one to get an XI out in GW35'

Just for variety (the Sakho thing)? That would be another GW35 blank. And actually, I'd be 0.1M short.

Obviously if I shipped KDB I'd have tons to spend. He's not in my team yet, so I could keep Ozil, but I feel Ozil's going in the wrong direction (and I'd have to lose Gabriel too).

I could go Sakho > Rojo, only if I find 0.3 somewhere...

Which I could do by doing Robles > Darlow.

That's possible. The upside from Rojo (assuming he's not jet lagged anymore) should be higher than the Robles/Darlow differential... But I really don't fancy Darlow.

I wouldn't really fancy Darlow/Rojo either. Ive got the same problem with my team and the options are really DDG or Smalling, but no game in 35 and smalling is too pricey.

There's no way I will butcher my attacking 8 to budget for one of DDG/Smalling, especially with a blank, but I'm sure they'll hurt me.

I think you're right, downgrading someone to get a United Def/Gk could pay off, but you end up contending with 2 more blanks than you planned for. Good to go.

That is generally a very good team.

    1. Sanchez or Iwobi?...sanchez is almost guaranteed to start while iwobi is value for money
    2. Coutinho...seems like many managers are having him in their team. Would he be a rotation risk come GW34 if Pool is still in EL? Would Lallana or Milner be a better option?
    3. Martial or Rashford? Rooney might be back at some point in GW34

DDG / DARLOW (I really really really do not like this one)
    Bellerin / Gabriel / Otamendi / Simpson / Delaney
    Sanchez / Payet / Mahrez?! / Coutinho / 9.0
    Kun / Lukaku / Martial

Would only have 4 players not having a GW in 35 which means one transfer.

    Anyone considered Mannone?

Sunderland getting a bit tighter and with the right rotation plays both in GW35 and has a double in 37....considering rotating with Robles. I had Mignolet, but trying to save on budget and thinking I might double up on Liverpool in midfield rather than defence (currently have Sakho, considering Lallana or Hendo) in 35. Liverpool are also pretty poor at the back.

    My WC-team.

    Robles-Mignolet
    Coleman-Bellerin-Gabriel-Smalling-Sakho
    Sanchez-Payet-Bolasie-Lanzini-Mahrez
    Lukaku-Kun-Kane

    2.2 ITB WC active

    GW34 Bolasie -> Firminho/Coutinho
    GW35 Smalling & Lanzini -> Kirchoff&William?? Or Lukaku -> Defoe.

    4 DGWers in GW33
    13 DGWers in GW34
9 Starters for GW35 +1FT. Take a hit (-4) or play ten starters if punting Bolasie GW33.
7 (+Robles) DGWers in GW37 (for now), although I'd likely have to sell one or two to get XI out in GW35.
    Maybe get GW37 10 DGWers+Mahrez/Ars mid.

Bolasie is my punt this week. This mean a hit GW35. I take that risk and hope Bolasie can at least get 4 points more than Firmino/Coutinho in the GW33. Definitely swap him out GW34.

And finally I decided to take double Everton defendes. Madness I don't know? Perhaps isn't smart move. For all that I look forward to one clean sheet the following four.

    Darmian/Gabriel/Ogbonna/Simpson/Mangala
    Sanchez/Payet/Silva/Coutinho/Albrighton
    Aguero/Lukaku/Mitrovic

    1.8 ITB

For GW35 2 FTs - Lukaku to Kane and SAVE

If Kompany is back in 36, then I'll switch Mangala for Sakho ahead of their double in 37.

Full side of doubles for 34, full 11 for 35 and without spending any points I'll have 8 doubles in 37 when I get Lukaku back.

    Sturridge, Lukaku, Vardy

I've been let down by Aguero so many times this season that I'm not putting up with him in my WC team. It might be a good decision to have 3 big hitters rather than having to make up for Aguero being overpriced by going with someone inconsistent like Mitovic/Martial and going for value over points elsewhere.

Not saying he won't score v Chelsea and Norwich but I like the look of my Aguero-less team.

OK so I think I'm down to two options, although obviously things will probably change!

      Option A (0.1 ITB):
      Robles - Darlow
      Rojo - Bellerin - Gabriel - Dawson - Sakho
      Sanchez - KDB - Payet - Coutinho - Mahrez
      Aguero - Lukaku - Mitrovic

      Option B (0.3 ITB):
      Robles - Darlow
      Rojo - Bellerin - Gabriel - Simpson - Sakho
      Sanchez - Barkley - Payet - Coutinho - Mahrez
      Aguero - Lukaku - Kane

      So essentially it's:
      A: Dawson/ KDB/ Mitrovic
      B: Simpson/ Barkley/ Kane
