Romelu Lukaku disappoints yet again as Everton and Palace play out a goalless draw at Selhurst Park. The Eagles serves up a second successive shut-out in the first of their two double Gameweeks. Elsewhere, United’s Marcus Rashford strengthens his prospects of retaining a starting berth by netting the opener in a 2-1 cup win at West Ham.

Lukaku blanks again

Everton extended their winless streak to five matches with a goalless stalemate at Selhurst Park as Gameweek 33 came to a bitterly disappointing conclusion.

Runaway leader in last week’s Captain Poll, with in excess of 70% of the votes, Romelu Lukaku failed to justify our collective show of faith and posted his fourth successive blank. Despite having clashes against Southampton and Liverpool up next, his 44% ownership won’t have too much optimism ahead of another double Gameweek for the Merseysiders.

Joel Robles proved to be the chief beneficiary of Everton’s first clean sheet in seven outings, picking up two save points and three bonus for an 11-point haul. Pitched at 4.3, the Spanish shot-stopper furnishes us with a budget path into a defence that lacks the consistency to warrant serious investment.

Post-match, Roberto Martinez conceded he has major worries over three of yesterday’s starters, with midfield duo Aaron Lennon and Ross Barkley both forced off in the second-half:

“Ross and Aaron have been accumulating a lot of minutes. I think Ross had a knock at the end and he couldn’t move freely. Lennon we’ll have to assess, I’m a bit worried about his hamstring. Baines had to stay on but in the last five minutes, he couldn’t move freely, so those three are going to be a serious concern for Saturday.”

Having received his marching orders for a second bookable offence, James McCarthy will be sidelined for the Merseysiders’ home encounter against Southampton this weekend.

Another clean sheet for Palace

Palace lacked the clinical touch to capitalise on their one-man advantage and territorial dominance in the second period.

To the jubilation of managers that targeted the Eagles’ rearguard for their double Gameweek 33, Alan Pardew’s troops notched their second shut-out on the bounce. The recent turn of events is all the more surprising bearing in mind that Palace had failed to keep a shut-out in 12 league outings prior to this week. Nonetheless, Alan Pardew’s side will do well to sustain their diligence during their consecutive road trips (ars & mun) next Gameweek.

Yannick Bolasie came up short for his 50,000 new owners, stretching out his scoreless run to 10 matches. With Manchester United and Arsenal – who possess the best and second-best home defensive records, respectively – next on the Eagles’ agenda, an exodus could be on the cards for the DR Congo international.

Dwight Gayle was forced off at the break through injury and is a doubt for the trip to Arsenal, with Connor Wickham favourite to start at the Emirates this weekend.

Rashford helps United through

Manchester United set up a meeting with Everton in the FA Cup semi-finals after beating West Ham United at the Boleyn Ground.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring with a sumptuous strike, delighting 30,000 Fantasy managers that snapped him up ahead of the Red Devils’ double Gameweek 34 (AVL & CRY). Hauled off at the break against Spurs last weekend, there were doubts over the youngster’s pitch time after the fit-again Wayne Rooney was named amongst the subs last night but Rashford’s display against the Hammers suggests he may well remain in pole position for the lone striker role over the double.

Anthony Martial also served a reminder of his points potential by providing assists for both the visitors’ goals. The France international remains the most secure route into the Red Devils’ attack and has now recorded attacking returns (three goals and one assist) in four of his previous six starts, which bodes well for his chances of punishing Aston Villa’s obliging defence.

In defence, Timothy Fosu-Mensah was passed fit following his injury scare at White Hart Lane, setting him up for further starts in the coming weeks. Priced at a mere 3.9 in FPL, the Dutch defender’s rise to prominence is an irksome development for Matteo Darmian’s 17,000 new owners, given that the Italian right-back looks highly unlikely to reclaim a regular starting berth.

Tomkins goal not enough for Hammers

Despite mounting a late comeback, West Ham were unable to emerge victorious in their final cup fixture at the Boleyn Ground.

James Tomkins set up a grandstand finish with a goal 11 minutes from time, latching onto an Andy Carroll header. The latter lays claim to four goals and one assist in four outings across all competitions, illustrating his potential to flourish as a differential source of Hammers attacking coverage for their double Gameweek 34 (lei & WAT).

Winston Reid was omitted from the squad and James Collins was only deemed fit enough for a spot on the bench, so James Tomkins partnered Angelo Ogbonna in central defence and Michail Antonio remained at right-back as Slaven Bilic rolled out a 4-2-3-1. Antonio’s 4% ownership will hope that the return of Collins and Tomkins triggers the winger’s reinstatement in the attacking quartet.

can't see anyway around it. Unless I get a Newcastle defender to go with Darlow or a WBA defender for Gabriel freeing up space to get Iwobi for a hit I am stuck with Townsend, as any transfers I make need to increase my complement on GW35ers

This is simply not true. They may be rotated rarer than others but they are still rotated quite often. Mueller, for example, started 4 games off the bench in Bundesliga this season, one time didn't show up at all. That's about every fifth game. Douglas Costa would have been rotated more often had Ribery been fit, etc...

        1. Smarty Pants
          • 16 Years

          Just checked Mueller stats:
          5 games off the bench
          1 bench no show
2 early subs before 60 minutes
          in 29 league games

      I watched the Manchester game:

Smalling did nothing special, was in Fosu Imensah's shadow the whole game.
Martial played well but didn't have many attempts on goal.
Payet kept at bay by Fosu Imensah.
      Lanzini played well, no returns.
WHM defense pushed very high up the pitch.

Whilst checking my GW 34 amendments I've been keeping half an eye on GW 35, and I just noticed the late cut-off (14:00).

Liverpool play at 15:00 and we usually get an early team for them. Given the blanks and expected Man City rotation (CL semi in midweek) I'll bringing in the starting Liverpool striker in 35 for either Lukaku or Aguero.

    Hope this is useful

      Other kick offs in 35 @ 3pm:
      Bourn vs Chelsea;
      Villa vs Southampton

If I had a Robles/Darlow double up this week i'd be cutting out a GKP shaped bit of post-it and sticking it over my screen.

Ignore DDG/Cech at your peril I say

Damn!!! why did Everton have to be so rubbish (sorry Toffees fans). Got Lennon and Lukaku to shift, Martial seems the obvious choice for the latter but is Sturridge worth the risk as a longer term prospect who also plays in 35?. I don't doubt Milner could get some nice points over those two games as a replacement for Lennon. Unfortunately unless I cheat can't have both with 3 then already in. When I look at planning ahead with Milner in my team it just doesn't work out financially and I end up at GW37 having to do a -8... Do I not like -8's

Maybe it's all to easy to underestimate Milner when Pool have those Galacticos there to pick I dunno. 😀

    A. Jags to Rojo

    B. Jags to Smalling
    Lukaku to Martial (-4)

Looks good B, general consensus is Martial is the way to go.. Lukaku, man he's a yo-yo player

I bet Lukaku trolls us so badly now. After those two displays for Everton, he will now score 2-3 in the coming games all of a sudden...

He has scored over 20 goals this season so is not the complete donkey some on here are making him out to be. Everton have been very poor lately and he's not exactly had many chances created for him. If he gets some service I'm sure he will get a goal or two in the DGW.

Agree. Not a donkey. It's more the fact that Everton look so poor and I thought he looked personally uninterested last night.

We know it to be true lol.. I read last night someone saying Martial could be rested. I know most will go that route Luk 2 Mart. We are all just incredibly unlucky that's the problem. 😀

Perhaps, but I've had enough of him.

Not sure how that would be trolling! Sensible to keep, anyone ditching now has only themselves to blame really - he's always been this kind of player, we knew it when we got him

Those two games in GW34 aren't the easiest and they don't have that precious GW35 outing. Towards the end of the season they have a wonderful run of fixtures though which is why I went 3 Everton. Going by form they are a disaster currently. So maybe shifting them out and then back in again could be the way to go

Damian, Lennon, Defoe -> Fosu-Mensah, Iwobi, Martial for a -8 point hit.

Worth it due to the double gameweek prospects of points?

I have absolutely no idea, I can't afford smalling though and I can see Utd getting two cleansheets in the DGW so want some sort of involvement in it.

Darmian was clearly a terrible choice even though he was getting game time basically every game all season ¬.¬

Utd defence vs Palace and Villa? Surely a very good chance of two cleansheets. Martial vs Villa or Lukaku vs good teams?

Do we think Cech will play both games for the Gunners this week? After sticking with Ospina for the last game against West Ham and him conceding 3, surely Wenger knows these are must win games and Cech is his best choice.

The only reason Cech didn't play was because he wasn't fit enough. If he's fit, he plays. Simple

Dann, Wickham and Lennon > Smalling, Martial and Lingard for -8.

Leaves me with a BB of

    Robles Mignolet
    Smalling Bellerin Alderweireld Dawson Morgan
    Sanchez Ozil Coutinho Lanzini Lingard
    Aguero Lukaku Martial

    Worth it right?!

Do we agree that Fosu-Mensah is more nailed-on than Rojo? If so, with no other concerns, worth it to make a sideways move?

More nailed on than someone not nailed on is still not nailed on, too many Man U defenders coming back from injury to punt on either

It's risky, he may start Valencia in one of the games so Fosu-Mensah could miss the Villa game and Rojo plays it. I'd hold.

Rotation is such a ballache. Worrying about:
    - Sturridge
    - Rashford
    - Coutinho

Who of those should I roll the dice on? Alternatives are Martial, KDB... who else?!

Smalling ignoring the blank comment, a spurs defender or southampton defender has a good chance of 2 cleanies even though they don't have DGWs
