Up next this busy Friday afternoon, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article as we cast an eye over the captaincy conundrum ahead of a reduced round of fixtures. As usual, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero holds a substantial lead at the summit with over 44% of the votes cast ahead of a home clash with Stoke. Although City have a Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid on Tuesday evening, the Argentine’s six goals in the last four look too good to ignore against a defence that’s conceded four times against both Liverpool and Spurs in their last two matches.

With 28% of the votes, Harry Kane is Aguero’s only real contender as Spurs prepare for the visit of West Brom. Although the Baggies have conceded just four times in five, Kane’s run of three double-figure hauls in five, which includes seven goals, an assist and 11 bonus points, suggests he’ll be a solid rival to the City striker.

Alexis Sanchez is some way back on a mere 5% despite netting three times across double Gameweek 34. The Arsenal midfielder has now racked up six goals and a couple of assists in his last six outings and travels to a Sunderland side with just a single clean sheet in their last nine at the Stadium of Light.

Southampton’s visit to Villa earns Graziano Pelle joint-third spot in the poll. With the midlands side having suffered the ignominy of relegation, the Italian is backed by 5% in light of four goals and three assists in his last five league outings.

Jurgen Klopp’s recent rotation policy means that Daniel Sturridge is another overlooked big-hitter. With Divock Origi ruled out, though, the England international may well lead the line at home to Newcastle – just 3% are willing to roll the dice on the 10.0-priced frontman, who has served up five goals and a pair of assists in six league appearances since returning from injury.

Further down, Pelle’s team-mate Sadio Mane is amongst a handful of candidates on the 1% mark. The Senegal international has netted three times in the last four now and bagged a hat-trick against Villa last season. Dele Alli is another differential option after his two-goal salvo at Stoke and is joined by the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Roberto Firmino and Riyad Mahrez as all four prepare for home comforts.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics, though?

Let’s start breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches and shed a little more light on the situation.

So my ML rivals can't afford to get Kane in without big hits.

They'll all prob captain Aguero. I've caught up and am 6 points from the lead.

    A) Do i captain Aguero and use the differential?
    B) Captain Kane and hope for a haul?

So here is draft number 356!

    Currently have:

    Robles / DeGea
    Simpson / Bellerin / Sagna / Gabriel / Clyne
    Lanzini / Barkley / Milner / Sanchez / Coutinho
    Aguero / Martial / Vardy

    What I'm thinking:

    A) Martial + Vardy + Barkley > Pelle + Defoe + Alli (-8)
    B) Martial + Vardy + Coutinho > Pelle + Defoe + Mahrez (-8)
    C) Martial + Vardy + Barkley > Kane + Defoe + Alli

A or B would leave me enough for Pelle > Kane next week. Or should I just put Kane in this week? Just think that Pelle could bag a few against villa or at least an assist or 2. Also I feel Mahrez could score big with Vardy out. I'm currently 2nd in my league with 1st and 3rd having Kane in their team.

I know that I won't have a goalkeeper to field this week but don't want to loose too many points. I have AOA and TC left.

    Thanks 🙂

C I think you need to cover Kane. I know Villa are pants but I would get Kane in now and that will allow you set up for GW37 easier.
      Good luck.

Sorry to be a pain, do you think Ulloa instead of Defoe this week could pay off? Not sure Sunderland will score and they are the same price?

          You're not being a pain !
I am not sure Leicester will score either. Sunderland need the points as much as Leicester and Arsenal can be very flakey at the back. Defoe also has some decent fixtures moving forward . I wouldn't be taking a hit for a player I would then have to ship out.

Ok lets try this again... anyone keen to try interpret klopps statement here in reference to studge and pool:

" Daniel has scored in the last few games and he had wonderful moments. He was a real threat for the other team. At Bournemouth, things were really outstanding and he's able to create his own moments and he does not always need an assist. With our performance, it's good to have these points and we have to think about tomorrow - who will start, who will play and who will come in. All these things. Of course, we need a striker who will score goals but hopefully we can do it from different positions."

      • 14 Years

fyi he saying he does not always need an assist in response to journalist implication that 'all' he doies is score goals and doesnt create much.

Origi injury has cocked up my team for next week meaning I now only have 10 players. Already taken a 4 point hit as well and only have 7m to spend on a replacement - is anyone worth it? Already have Defoe. Can't see who else to get.

Other option is to rip up my team to afford to bring Kane back. Ozil > Iwobi and Origi > Kane. Will that transfer be worth 8 points?

Or keep 10 and maybe look to bring in Deeney/Ighalo next week - I know they've been poor recently, but against Villa and DGW 37.

People on here are getting far too carried away with rotation fears imo

I got 3 liverpool, 2 man united, and 1 west ham player benched last week.

      reasonable to have rotation fears

I had 7 players benched last week. But that was last week and this is now. Different situations.

          Situation has not changed much.
Liverpool will have one eye on their Europa match. Rotation is bound to happen. Cou and sturidge will limited time and so wil Kun.

Klopp has said today in plain words that he is not picking tomorrow's team with the match vs Villareal in mind. It's 5 days later, almost a full week.

    this is my starting 11

    Mignolet
    Moreno Simpson bellerin Azp
    Lanzini Coutinho Iwobi Sanchez

      You have Lanzini twice

I'd get alli or rose in.

          Seems a logical move.

I've gone for Rose for attacking threats. Spurs are on a roll too.

    *DDG
    *Robles
    Bellerin
    Gabriel
    *Smalling
    (Lovren)
    (Sakho)
    (Coutinho)
    *Payet
    Sanchez
    (KDB)
    *Lingard
    Mitrovic
    *Carroll
    Aguero

    DDG > Lloris
    Coutinho > Alli
    Carroll > Kane

Moves costing 8 points but have to be done to even have a chance of 11 this week. Seem fair enough?
