Christian Benteke returns in time for Liverpool’s clash with Villarreal tonight. Mamadou Sakho opts against appealing his failed UEFA drugs test, Stoke are sweating on Shay Given’s fitness, whilst Fabricio Coloccini faces a race against time to feature for Newcastle again this season.

Benteke fit for Villarreal clash

In yesterday’s press conference, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Christian Benteke is available to face Villarreal following his recovery from a knee injury:

“It is the best news that Christian is back. He has not had too many sessions but we watched him in training – although now is not the moment to think if he is in the best shape. After injury that is not too easy, but he is in really good shape that is for sure. For us it is perfect that he is back and we have only players here in Villarreal who are only ready for being part tomorrow, there are no tourists. If we need him, we can use him. That’s good.”

The Scout Says: With Divock Origi sidelined due to an ankle problem, Klopp surprisingly fielded both Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino up front together against Newcastle last Saturday. Given that the Merseysiders now face two clashes with Villarreal and a trip to Swansea in the next week, though, the German could look to manage Sturridge or Firmino’s minutes to lessen the likelihood of injury, particularly to the former. Although Klopp’s recent team sheet against Bournemouth suggests he’s willing to ring the changes ahead of Europa League fixtures, Benteke hasn’t started a league match since Gameweek 20 and it remains to be seen whether he’ll be afforded a role in the XI. Given that Sturridge has five goals and two assists in his last six, his 20,000+ new owners will be hoping he retains his starting berth for the weekend trip to the Liberty.

Sakho won’t contest failed drugs test

Mamadou Sakho could be set to face a lengthy ban after rejecting the opportunity to appeal his failed drugs test. The Press Association have reported that the Liverpool defender decided against asking for a second sample to be analysed after his initial test revealed traces of a fat-burning substance.

The Scout Says: The Reds have ensured that the French defender remains unavailable for selection as they await UEFA’s verdict. There’s a fear, though, that Sakho could be banned for up to six months in a similar situation to Kolo Toure’s suspension for taking “water tablets” whilst at Man City back in 2011. Such a scenario would force Jurgen Klopp to reassess his first-choice defence for the upcoming campaign, with the incoming Joel Matip perhaps afforded a chance to partner Dejan Lovren in 2016/17. For now, though, Klopp may feel a little reluctant to rotate Lovren for the run-in, ensuring he has at least one of his first-choice centre-backs on board ahead of the Europa League clashes with Villarreal and domestic schedule that hands Liverpool four fixtures (swa, WAT, CHE, wba) in the final three Gameweeks.

Given injury worse than first feared

According to reports, the groin strain Shay Given sustained against Manchester City could sideline him for the remainder of the campaign.

The Scout Says: In the possible absence of the Irish keeper, Jakob Haugaard (4.4) is poised to earn a run of starts between the sticks. Although the Dane occupies the budget bracket and Stoke enjoy a relatively agreeable final three fixtures (SUN, cry, WHU), no managers will feel inclined to back a defence that have shipped a whopping 12 goals in three outings. If anything, the fact that the Potters are forced to field an experienced shot-stopper promotes investment in the likes of Jermain Defoe (three goals in six) and Fabio Borini (one goal and assist in two), who embark on a trip to the Britannia Stadium this weekend and are looking to build momentum ahead of Sunderland’s double Gameweek 37.

Benitez uncertain on Coloccini return

Rafa Benitez conceded that Fabricio Coloccini is unlikely to feature for Newcastle United this season:

“I hope so but the setback was what I was suspecting. I am not very optimistic at the moment.”

The Scout Says: With Coloccini all but ruled out for the Magpies’ run-in, the 4.2-priced Jamaal Lascelles – who produced a 14-point haul at home to Swansea in double Gameweek 34 – should retain his starting slot in the heart of defence. Certainly, those holding Newcastle assets will be buoyed by a schedule that sees them next face off against a Crystal Palace unit with a single goal in three before travelling to an Aston Villa outfit that posted five blanks in their previous seven fixtures. A lack of a double Gameweek 37, though, should ensure that non-owners steer clear in spite of their recent renaissance under Benitez.

Do we think that Lukaku is still on pens for Everton, after the miss vs Utd?

Thx, I'd expect him to get another chance, as it's a perfect opportunity to get him back to scoring goals and raise confidence but it's a close call.

I'd be surprised if he wasn't - players are rarely taken off penalty duty due to one miss and besides; it was a good save, not a terrible penalty.

Norwich - ars MUN WAT eve

Not sure fixtures are of relevance for Everton with Martinez in charge. Also, the Liverpool defenders will all probably miss one or two of those (apart from the Chelsea game)

WHM don't really do CSs. Cresswell is only viable because of attacking points. When looking at baps, we should be looking at defensive teams, otherwise the baps-oriented view comes out flawed.

Since you have 2 United, I would take out DdG and get Gomes. Reason being security of starts over other defenders although Cathcart being touted as most secure of them.
Also United away are different defensively so not worth doubling up and missing out on a Watford spot.

Don't fancy the double up on Sunderland, go Gomez instead of Mannone would give you a viable option for gw36, if you're not going De Gea anyway?

Supposing you've got De Gea and Mannone as keepers. Could be wrong here 🙂

Looking at the whole team and cashflow I'd stick to the setup you have. You need to free up cash to get Gomez and I don't really see where that would come from, except maybe Hzard > Fab.

          I'd rank Mannone + Hazard > Gomez + Fabregas

          gtg! 🙂

I would have suggested saving saving -4 and playing KDB with AOA - similar to what I'll probably do.

In your position I would still not bother getting rid of Sakho. May as well let him rot now.

That is an option but I don't fancy playing Walker and Delany. Should I let Alli rot on the bench and replace Coutinho instead?

These moves enable the Payet transfer.

If you'll indulge me, just need one last sanity check...

    Darlow
    Bellerin, Smalling, Simpson
    Sanchez, KDB, Payet, Lanzini
    Aguero, Kane, Mitrovic

    (Robles, Gabriel, Sakho*, Alli*)

1FT, 0.7 ITB. These moves for -8? Short-term loss but removes the risk of not getting 11 out this week and should set me up better for the DGW.

    Sakho > PVA
    Alli > Townsend
    Mitrovic > Defoe

Looks good. You probably might better play Gabriel over Simpson. Thing is with Gabriel is that he'll either play or just not get any minute. Looks at the history, he's not thise kind of players that come off the bench for 10 minutes like a zabaleta, a kolarov or a caulker.
Since Arsenal have better chance to clean sheet at home against norwich, I'd do gabriel over simpson and bench simpson in the first spot

      1. amplifiedAnt
        • 11 Years

Oh yeah, I'll completely switch the starting lineup if I do those 3 subs. Potentially:

        Darlow
        Bellerin, PVA, Gabriel
        Sanchez, KDB, Payet, Townsend
        Aguero, Kane, Defoe

        (Robles, Simpson, Smalling, Lanzini)

Then if Gabriel doesn't play, Simpson's the one to step in. Only one I'm unsure of is Lanzini or KDB. Could see KDB only getting 20 mins, so perhaps Lanzini's better?

        1. rnrd
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 10 months ago

Lanzini could also get 20. KDB, if coming off the bench for 30 minutes can do a lot of damage. It possible that Pellegrini take aguero off at the 45 mark and KDB in with a more advance position for KDB

    KDB / Coutinho debate

I really am having a tough time trying to decide who to drop between KDB and Coutinho.

I don't think Coutinho will play this WE but I have been considering him in my thinking process since GW33 looking at its Double GW fixture on GW37. THE EUC3 final is on May 18th so I think Coutinho's gametime is under threat for GW36, 37 and possibly 38 whereas C1 final is on May 28 so more time for KDB to play.

I don't think KDB will be rested for the game against Arsenal on May 8. Too much of an importance for C1 qualification race. There is 5 days off between Southampton - City and Real City so it is possible, also considering the injuries factor at city that KDB plays a role this WE.

So I am leaning towards dropping Coutinho rather than KDB but it hurts to drop a DGW potential player I have picked 3 GW ago. However, I have already learnt the hard way to capitalize on Pool for the DGW34..

what are your thoughts guys between on the Coutinho / KDB debate?

Best Alli replacement (aka best mid for the doubles)

Even if you aren't in need of an All replacementi there are plenty of midfielders with a double Gameweek 37 to consider.

Feel free to list your key midfielders for double Gameweek 37.

Here’s a few to start the discussion.

    Chelsea

The London club is teaming with potential midfield assets. All key ones cost more than Alli so a hit will be needed, but as many are expected to spend points this week and next that shouldn’t be a problem.

For members I’ve compiled this table of the best Chelsea players. Sort by chances created to get the most likely to assist (the bread and butter of midfielders). Sort by shots on target for those likely to get you a goal. http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/10184/

For me Fabregas looks the best, admittedly dullard, pick. He is not only creating a lot of chances, but also converting them into actual FPL points. He also has four double digit hauls this season from a team that has been woeful in attack at times.

Willian ranks second for me due to insecurity of starts. Currently Hazard is on the watchlist, but I need to see another great haul versus Spurs to consider him. Was Bournemouth a blip? Investing in Hazard is a lot of money to find out it was.

    Norwich

Don’t laugh, but Gameweek 37 has a Norwich midfielder as highest scorer written all over it. It is that kind of season. For me Brady looks the standout pick with goals and assist potential. If you don’t fancy taking a hit to remove Alli punting in East Anglia could prove a smart, if risky, move.

    Norwich table for Members http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/7402/

    West Ham

Payet is the main attraction. Surely he can’t fail to convert all those chances anymore? West Brom will prove a useful test to find out. Lanzini and Antonio, even placed in a right back role, are the key budget picks. But as with Chelsea could being dullard prove fruitful? Mark Noble emerged from the last DGWK with a 16 pt haul thanks to his penalty duties. Can he do the same again?

I can't see much appeal in Sunderland midfielders personally. Defoe and Borini the main draws in terms of attacking points. Watmore the punt. But all are forwards. In addition Big Sam's focus on defence worries me with hardly anyone apart from the forwards looking like scoring.

Well another factor in the chelsea choice is that Hazard will probably be asking for minutes to Hiddink to build fitness for the Euro. I think his mindset has changed since Mou is out and he's looked very sharp and mobile against bournemouth. I thinks he is then less prone to rotation than Willian that is under Pedro and Oscar threat.

I thought Hazard was pretty lethargic against Bournemouth and I was at the game! If it was me I am far more likely to go for Willian or Pedro, and the dullard choice would be Fabregas! Hazard is assured of going to the Euros in a very good Belgium team. Personally, I think Chelsea have tough fixtures in gw36 & gw37, so will not be investing.

My concern with Brady is that he may get moved back to Left Back to accommodate Redmond / Hoolahan coming back in the team. I believe he was subbed off at half time during the Sunderland game?

He's a big risk...but that's what you sign up to with a Norwich midfielder. As a former Hoolahan owner I can testify to that - lots of rotation but all capable of a huge haul.

Very true, I owned Redmond for the first few weeks of the season and he got me some good points. I'm tempted by Howson purely based on security of starts, what do you think of him?

I sold on the wildcard, downgraded Ozil>Iwobe, so my Alli replacement is effectively Coutinho!

I may sell next week for Payet or Hazard for start security... Will have 3.0m ITB after Dann>PvA tonight, barring Liverpool injuries.

I'm thinking Alli to Willian this week for no hits...

I just can't afford Payet which is really stressing me out.

Do you think it's worth doing KDB or Coutinho / Alli to Payet and Willian for a -4?

With Silva injured I just get the feeling KDB will start this weekend...

100% Lukaku plays both. I like both options and I'm glad I've got another week to deciede cause we really need to see Everton's performance against Bournmouth first. On that basis I'd opt for Carroll this week.

It's all about how Everton plays. If he gets no service he ain't scoring. It's very much up in the air with the Martinez situation. Rumours suggest he's lost the confidence of some players and so they might not play for him. We just don't know at the mo. On paper it's a cracking fixture after watching Bournmouth last week.

The amount of people benching Man Utd defenders surprises me. I know Leicester haven't blanked since the start of the year but Man Utd have 4 clean sheets in their last 5 games overall and 4 in 4 at home. Leicester are without Vardy and whilst they did well against Swansea this is a team that Newcastle put 3 past - they're simply not trying any more. I can see a 0-0 easily.

hazard is the opposite of Fabregas and Pedro in terms of body helath management at this point.

Fabregas and Pedro will require some rest ahead of the Euro
Hazard will need game time to build fitness.

Also if Hazard wants to leave chelsea and chelsea want to sell hazard they'd better give him game time and shinning opportunities before the end of the season to increase his selling price

There's been a lot of press this week suggesting he's going to stay, Conte saying he is key to his plans, Hazard stating he hopes to beat Spurs - I think he may feel wanted again and with the hip injury sorted could be a good pick.

            Classy.

His comments and team selections indicate that Hazard, and the rest of Chelsea are not nailed on. Literally anyone could be dropped or rotated.

    Start:
    A) pelle (MCI) or lingard (LEI)
    B) simpson (mun) or clyne (swa)
    C) mignolet (swa) or robles (BOU)

    Advice appreciated

Pelle (or -4 to anyone else - I'd do that)
      Simpson 100%
      Mig

Yep. Id sooner take a hit on Pelle than play him or field Lingard.

          Pelle to anyone (-8)
Or just play him at home?

As i already taken a hit

Lingard (only because Pelle will blank again)
Clyne (if he plays otherwise Simpson as this is a must win for LEI)
Mignolet (cos Everton suck and Bournnouth have goals in them)

if I decide to keep Coutinho in my team, instead taking a hit, should I:

    A. play Coutinho - a risk of him not starting and coming on for a cameo
    or
    B. play Lanzini - benching Coutinho
