Christian Benteke returns in time for Liverpool’s clash with Villarreal tonight. Mamadou Sakho opts against appealing his failed UEFA drugs test, Stoke are sweating on Shay Given’s fitness, whilst Fabricio Coloccini faces a race against time to feature for Newcastle again this season.

Benteke fit for Villarreal clash

In yesterday’s press conference, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Christian Benteke is available to face Villarreal following his recovery from a knee injury:

“It is the best news that Christian is back. He has not had too many sessions but we watched him in training – although now is not the moment to think if he is in the best shape. After injury that is not too easy, but he is in really good shape that is for sure. For us it is perfect that he is back and we have only players here in Villarreal who are only ready for being part tomorrow, there are no tourists. If we need him, we can use him. That’s good.”

The Scout Says: With Divock Origi sidelined due to an ankle problem, Klopp surprisingly fielded both Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino up front together against Newcastle last Saturday. Given that the Merseysiders now face two clashes with Villarreal and a trip to Swansea in the next week, though, the German could look to manage Sturridge or Firmino’s minutes to lessen the likelihood of injury, particularly to the former. Although Klopp’s recent team sheet against Bournemouth suggests he’s willing to ring the changes ahead of Europa League fixtures, Benteke hasn’t started a league match since Gameweek 20 and it remains to be seen whether he’ll be afforded a role in the XI. Given that Sturridge has five goals and two assists in his last six, his 20,000+ new owners will be hoping he retains his starting berth for the weekend trip to the Liberty.

Sakho won’t contest failed drugs test

Mamadou Sakho could be set to face a lengthy ban after rejecting the opportunity to appeal his failed drugs test. The Press Association have reported that the Liverpool defender decided against asking for a second sample to be analysed after his initial test revealed traces of a fat-burning substance.

The Scout Says: The Reds have ensured that the French defender remains unavailable for selection as they await UEFA’s verdict. There’s a fear, though, that Sakho could be banned for up to six months in a similar situation to Kolo Toure’s suspension for taking “water tablets” whilst at Man City back in 2011. Such a scenario would force Jurgen Klopp to reassess his first-choice defence for the upcoming campaign, with the incoming Joel Matip perhaps afforded a chance to partner Dejan Lovren in 2016/17. For now, though, Klopp may feel a little reluctant to rotate Lovren for the run-in, ensuring he has at least one of his first-choice centre-backs on board ahead of the Europa League clashes with Villarreal and domestic schedule that hands Liverpool four fixtures (swa, WAT, CHE, wba) in the final three Gameweeks.

Given injury worse than first feared

According to reports, the groin strain Shay Given sustained against Manchester City could sideline him for the remainder of the campaign.

The Scout Says: In the possible absence of the Irish keeper, Jakob Haugaard (4.4) is poised to earn a run of starts between the sticks. Although the Dane occupies the budget bracket and Stoke enjoy a relatively agreeable final three fixtures (SUN, cry, WHU), no managers will feel inclined to back a defence that have shipped a whopping 12 goals in three outings. If anything, the fact that the Potters are forced to field an experienced shot-stopper promotes investment in the likes of Jermain Defoe (three goals in six) and Fabio Borini (one goal and assist in two), who embark on a trip to the Britannia Stadium this weekend and are looking to build momentum ahead of Sunderland’s double Gameweek 37.

Benitez uncertain on Coloccini return

Rafa Benitez conceded that Fabricio Coloccini is unlikely to feature for Newcastle United this season:

“I hope so but the setback was what I was suspecting. I am not very optimistic at the moment.”

The Scout Says: With Coloccini all but ruled out for the Magpies’ run-in, the 4.2-priced Jamaal Lascelles – who produced a 14-point haul at home to Swansea in double Gameweek 34 – should retain his starting slot in the heart of defence. Certainly, those holding Newcastle assets will be buoyed by a schedule that sees them next face off against a Crystal Palace unit with a single goal in three before travelling to an Aston Villa outfit that posted five blanks in their previous seven fixtures. A lack of a double Gameweek 37, though, should ensure that non-owners steer clear in spite of their recent renaissance under Benitez.

Roberto Martinez has hinted he could hand a debut to young midfielder Kieran Dowell against Bournemouth at Goodison Park on Saturday.
"Kieran Dowell is clearly under consideration. Kieran Dowell has been outstanding with his performances," he said.
"He’s had outstanding consistency for the under-21s. I feel he is ready to be given an opportunity for the first team."

    Also

"We’ll have a little bit of a weak back four in terms of the bodies missing. Maybe we’ll have a good opportunity for some young player to come along."

Possibly could play Besic or McCarthy at CB but I think he would be foolish not to give a youngster a chance now that the season is over.

Hopefully Dowell will be given a chance in CM.

Coutinho and alli needs to go

    Would u rather have :
    A) payet and lanzini
    Or
    B) firmino and lanzini

Pool fixtures and Coutinho mins played estimate:

    28th April - Villareal (90mins)
    1st May - Swansea (0)
    5th May - Villareal (90mins)
    8th May - Watford (DGW) (0)
    11th May - Chelsea (DGW) (90mins)

Do we reckon those minutes are correct?

Weighing up either keeping him for the DGW or removing him - have a plan to double down on Allerdici's defence and doing Payet and KABOUL (*shudder*) in for Gabby and Alli (-4) and hoping Coutinho at least does something vs. Chelsea. If I remove Coutinho instead of Alli, Sanchez plays instead away vs. City...

    Madness?

    1. Margarido

      Not madness 🙂

I reckon i will a have a cameo in one of those SWA and WAT.
My reasoning for selling him, its to find a spot for Daniel Sturridge.
But even that might not be a great idea...

I don't think he'll play vs. Swansea - he's on my bench this week as Klopp has already shown that he will wrap his best players in cotton wool in the league as all his focus is on theUEL.

Thinking of keeping Coutinho purely because he *might* play a few mins vs. Watford and will almost definitely play vs. Chelsea, whereas Sanchez has City away and we all know what Arsenal can be like. But surely benching Sanchez is madness!

        MADNESS! 🙂

Tough - as I said above, Klopp has shown he'll rotate anyone and everyone in the league. Wouldn't be surprised to see a load of 18 year olds playing in the central defensive positions for Pool in at least the Swansea and Watford games, and also the back up keeper to come in for Migs in at least one of the two games.

        Such a minefield!

I joined the PvA bandwagon this week by rage transferring out Sakho.

I just think that it's probably less worse to hang on to Coutinho and hope he plays some part in the DGW, and also has an okay GW38 fixture (away at WBA) rather than keeping a suspended Alli on my bench.

            Sigh...

One space to fill in my WC team.. Max 4.7 defender? Moreno, Cathcart, Kaboul, Norwich def?

    De Gea (Ruddy)
Smalling - van Aanholt - Baines (BLANK) (Cresswell)
    Sanchez (c) - Hazard - Fabregas - Payet (Lanzini)
    Lukaku - Deeney - Defoe

Enough cash in the bank to upgrade Deeney to Sturridge/Rooney also.

Definitely not for Liverpool - think you'd be counting on a SGW (home vs. Chelsea) for any player you bring in, Klopp will surely rotate heavily after the first leg / prior to the second leg of the Villareal game.

Olsson and Mannone in is a sweet strategy. Am thinking of doubling up on the Sunderland defence myself, knowing Big Sam!

Is Baines a good choice? Seems you'll be looking at attacking returns only, given the injuries.

Norwich defence looks good for that slot

For what it's worth, I'm also a reluctant Lanzini owner and will be playing him.

My plan currently, because I have perfect money for my intended move (Payet + Kaboul in for Alli and Gabby), would mean I'd be benching Sanchez.

Could be a risk worth taking...

He'll be mine. I wish I could remove Kane, Aguero or Kaku for Carroll, but Lukaku has a dgw so there's no point in removing him (he'll troll me either way) and my main ML rival who I am 3 points behind has Kane and Aguero so I would be massively exposed to them getting a haul.

Play Cou or Lanzini for this GW? I already have Payet in the team. Cou won't start but do we think he has more off the bench potential than a Lanzini full 90 mins? Lanzini will be first sub if Cou doesn't play at all.

Oh I see - keeping for Norwich then selling for Man City. I'd agree with that. Wenger 'rested' Monreal and Mertesacker for Gabriel and Gibbs at the end of last season. He might do it again this time around and rob Bellerin of a game v Villa. Pure guesswork, of course - but you don't want to keep a defender who ends the season with mcy, blank.
