With Asmir Begovic departing for Chelsea last summer, the 2015/16 campaign was always destined to be a breakthrough season for Stoke’s Jack Butland. The England international had long been earmarked as the Bosnian’s long-term replacement following a £3.5m move from Birmingham in January 2013, and established himself as one of the leading goalkeepers in the top flight this time around. Butland’s season was curtailed by an ankle injury suffered during England’s 3-2 victory over Germany in March, but such was the impression he made up to that point, he takes the goalkeeper spot in our Team of the Season with 33% of the vote.

The Statistics

A popular choice for many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bosses heading into the campaign due to a lowly 4.5 price tag, Butland struggled to live up to the pre-season hype, failing to register a clean sheet in his first seven matches.

Mark Hughes’ decision to call upon Philipp Wollscheid to help shore up the defence saw the Potters record consecutive shut-outs in away matches against Aston Villa and Swansea. The Stoke rearguard was then further boosted once captain Ryan Shawcross returned from a back injury, racking up a further six clean sheets between Gameweeks 11 and 18. By that stage, Butland’s price in FPL had already risen to 5.1, and peaked at 5.3 just a few weeks later. He only managed a further two clean sheets in his final 13 appearances, though, before injury struck in Berlin.

Butland ended the season with ten shut-outs from his 31 league appearances, with an equal split of five at home and five on the road. Up until he suffered that fractured ankle while on international duty, he led all goalkeepers for saves (102), which was a crucial element to his popularity this season – indeed, Butland earned at least one save point on 18 occasions. The Stoke stopper averaged 3.3 saves per game, which is on a par with Watford’s Heurelho Gomes, the highest scoring goalkeeper in FPL this season, and compares favourably to David de Gea (2.4), who finished second in our vote.

Perhaps the most telling statistic is that the Potters have failed to keep a clean sheet in the seven matches since Butland has been sidelined, conceding an average of 2.6 goals per game, compared to just 1.2 goals per game when Butland played.

With 14 bonus points also accrued, Butland served up 4.3 points per game in 2015/16 – put into perspective, Glen Johnson (3.7) was the only other Stoke defensive regular to average more than 3.0.

A total of 132 points placed the keeper second only to Marko Arnautovic (165) at the Britannia, despite missing the final seven league outings through injury.

The Prospects

Butland’s ankle complaint cruelly ruled him out of Euro 2016, but the Potters stopper has recently done away with his crutches, and has his eyes set on a return ahead of pre-season, tweeting:

“On the way back from seeing the surgeon, walked in with crutches, walked out without them… But all focus now on being fully fit for pre-season.”

That will be music to the ears of Mark Hughes, with confidence in the Stoke backline likely to be largely restored upon his return to action. The injury problems suffered by Shawcross may also mean that the Potters manager looks to enter the market for another centre-back, which could also further boost the prospects of Butland ahead of the new season.

The downside, though, is that Butland will surely be subject to a price hike from his original valuation of 4.5, with a likely shift to 5.0 in line with options such as West Ham’s Adrian and Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski. This will take him out of the budget bracket and lessens his appeal for those who prefer to select a pair of cheap rotation options between the sticks.

Ultimately, it’s debatable whether Butland will remain in the forefront of our Fantasy thinking as we look for alternative 4.5-priced options in goal. Stoke’s regular backline options all seem likely to start the following season at 5.0, though if they fail to up their resilience – only Everton and the bottom six shipped more – Hughes’ defence may struggle to offer us value for money in 2016/17, regardless of Butland’s exploits between the posts.

Definitely from a FPL perspective.. excellent footballer too in various positions just don't see him nailing down a starting position in any of them but his versatility should see him play a decent amount of football.. I'm confident of Mourinho being in charge next year and Blind just doesn't have the pace or power for his kind of CB and Shaw ill be first choice LB.. Midfield will be strengthened

Hopefully they don't address CB. Blind at 5.5/6m as a defender would be immense.

Came from 114 points behind a ML rival in GW31 to currently lead by 1 (taking auto subs into account), mainly thanks to Mane. Just need Smalling and Martial to outscore Valencia which may not happen.

If I do win it will be the first time since the start of the season my rival has not being top of the league. In a cash league with €250 for the winner he must be sick, might just buy a Mane jersey to wear to 5 a side to rub it in.

I wonder if its a good strategy to start the FPL season with really good defenders and then slowly get in the strikers on form. I've noticed that the teams which do well, had the defence sorted out very early in the season.

maybe. but i'm thinking of keeping money itb to acquire these in-form attackers. Surely there won't be too much price rise in 2-3 weeks. If someone is really blitzing it, get him a week earlier. There will be some cons to this tactic, but i'm trying to weigh it out

My experience is the exact opposite . People wildcard in the first three weeks in order to build up team value . The first international break will see alot of price rises/falls.

I would say the key to good team value, which can be very beneficial after Xmas, is not making too many transfers in defence.

agreed. It would be more accurate to bet on some of the 'big' teams to have better defences at the start.

I dunno if anyone remembers the ghost team which was in the top 100 for a few months. The defence + GK consisted of players from the big teams

Haha, TLK is a ledge round these parts!
He normally buys Baines/Kompany/Kolarov etc and generally plays 5-3-2, he had a good start this year but fell away, personally I normally do something like
6.0/5.0/4.5/4.5/4.5 along those lines anyway b

Start the season with a balanced team. The big defenders outscore the cheap ones and are better VFM so you can afford to sit on them if you picked wisely.

      As a rule I get one 6-7m, one 5-6m, 3x4.5m.

Even more important, go safe on GK picks.

Nice team I guess - many things not set yet...

Think Austria's line up will be

      Almer
      Klein, Dragovic, Hintereggger, Fuchs,
      Baumgartlinger, Alaba
      Harnik, Junuzovic, Arnautovic,

..with Schöpf, Ilsanker, Lazaro, Prödl, Wimmer, Özcan, Sabitzer, Hinterseer hanging around too.

Shows perfectly why Austria are such a decent side. Strong squad with good players in most positions, although they probably lack a top striker. Janko is a bit meh and Hinterseer is very hot and cold for Ingolstadt.

Another thing is that most of the squad play weekly in the Premier League or Bundesliga.

Since people keep asking only thing I could find no quotes.

The outcome of their final Premier League fixture of the campaign could have a bearing on when next season starts for the Reds. Defeat against Eddie Howe's side means Van Gaal will finish sixth, the result of which is entering the Europa League at its third qualifying stage.
The first legs of those ties are to be held on July 28, and United could only then avoid that by beating Crystal Palace at Wembley. The FA Cup winners go straight into the group stage.
United are scheduled to face Pep Guardiola's Manchester City during their pre-season tour of China on July 25 - just three days before the Europa League could start for them.

      It's just FPL without bonuses.

Only difference in scoring is a penalty award gets 2 points and not 3 as if an assist!

1FT per Matchday, which can be rolled. (only for group stages)
Unlimited transfers after groups, then certain number between R16, QF, SF, F.

    Clyne---Smalling--Cahill---Rose

Would love some thoughts on this team lads, spent about half an hour fiddling with it:

    Rui Patricio
    Dier Hummels Rodriguez (Carvajal)
    Alaba Ozil Alli Kroos Martial
    Griezmann Ronaldo(c)

Aside from Carvajal, no one of note on the bench. Thoughts? Is a 3-5-2 the way to go?

Had a quick peek of the game, think you're better off with another striker. Lewa will score a bundle, though expensive. Kane is a shout.

Kroos won't, well shouldn't, bring many attacking returns.

Could downgrade him and upgrade Matri to anyone 7.5 or less, is it even worth it at that point though? Any others to go for?

Kroos is not attackig enough for this game, plus you have Ozil. Alaba is too expensive for a reverse OOP too imho

Carvajal is only for the bench. Who should I replace Kroos and Alaba with? I've considered Rakitic, Payet, and Modric.

Who's on your bench? You mentioned Matri.

I'd ship Dier, Hummels, Kroos, Alaba. I'd play this game just like you play fpl since the scoring is identical except when it comes to penalties. No bonus pts either.

      1. juggos
        • 13 Years
        10 years, 2 months ago

By that I meant stick to 3-4-3. I'd definitely going to look at the defensive rotation amongst the group games.

Judging from their prices, Valbuena, Coman, Draxler, Witsel, Mata, Navas may not be nailed options but I think if any of them are set to start, they can offer good value. Coman especially

Imo Shirokov, Xhaka, Joao Moutinho are better mid priced nailed options than Alaba and Kroos

Got bottomed on this fast-moving comment section 😉

What a last GW this is turning out to be...

I was almost 80 points off 10 gws ago, having not been top of my mini league once this season. I got that all the way down to 8 before TC Payet looked to have ended it last week.

Bringing in Mané (C) and Giroud has closed the 41 point gap to just 1 and de Gea can seal it with just 1 point to win on transfers made.

379 games played without being top and I might just nick it on the last... 🙂

PS. Lloris' 1 to come off the bench if de Gea happens to miss out for whatever reason

I prefer Rakitic(how do you do that "c", btw?), but don't have either.

        Good old copy/paste Doosra! 😉

This is what I've come up with so far...

        Rui Patricio
        Boateng - Koscielny - Dier
        Hazard - Payet - Rakitić - Milner
        Griezmann - Muller - Mandzukic

Mucha - Nuri Sahin - Sapunaru - Lafferty

        What do you reckon?
