The final team in our rundown of Group D is Turkey. Fatih Terim’s men get their tournament underway against Croatia on Sunday June 12 at 2pm, then take on defending champions Spain five days later at 8pm before squaring up to the Czech Republic (8pm) on June 21.

If, as predicted by the bookies, Turkey finish third in the group, they’d then face the winners of either Group A or B in the last 16 – this could see them potentially pitted against France or England and lessen the likelihood of clinching a place in the quarter-finals.

Road to Qualification

After picking up a single point from their first three group fixtures, Turkey’s chances of making the tournament looked slim-to-none before a run of five wins and two draws in the subsequent seven clinched a spot as best third-placed in the final round of fixtures.

Emerging from a group that also included the likes of Holland, Czech Republic and Iceland, Terim’s side scored 14 times and conceded on nine occasions. After drawing a blank in the campaign opener, they found the net in each of the remaining nine matches and also upped their resilience as the group unfolded, conceding just once in their final five Group A fixtures.

Over the past 12 months, Turkey have played seven friendlies, chalking up wins against Bulgaria (4-0), Qatar, Sweden and Austria (all by a 2-1 scoreline) before seeing off Montenegro 1-0 on Sunday. They’ve also played out a goalless draw with Greece and lost 2-1 to England at the end of May – indeed, that reverse against the Three Lions was Turkey’s only defeat in their last 15 matches.

Most Appearances Ozan Tufan (10), Arda Turan, Caner Erkin Selcuk Inan, Mehmet Topal (9), Volkan Babacan (8) Serdar Aziz, Hakan Calhanoglu, Volkan Sen, Gokhan Tore (7), Hakan Balta, Burak Yilmaz, Umut Bulut (6).

Most goals Burak Yilmaz (4), Selcuk Inan (3), Arda Turan (2)

Most assists Arda Turan (3), Caner Erkin, Volkan Sen (2).

The Key Targets

With two goals and three assists to his name, the contribution of Arda Turan looks vital to Turkey’s chances. Coming in at a pricey 8.0, the Barcelona midfielder’s underlying numbers bode well for his prospects – stationed in the attacking midfield three in Terim’s 4-2-3-1 formation, he sat second for attempts on goal and top for chances created over the qualifiers. Turan was also second for successful tackles, which also strengthens his appeal in the DraftKings game.

Available for 7.5 in Uefa, Hakan Calhanoglu is the most popular Turkish player and sits in 5% of sides. Versatile enough to feature in the double-pivot or in the three slots behind a lone frontman, he only mustered a single goal in the qualifiers but the stats are very much in his favour – Calhanoglu was second only to Turan for key passes and fired just one shot less than his team-mate on the road to France. The Bayer Leverkusen player is also the main man for dead-ball duties and supplied more accurate crosses than any Turkey player.

Up front, Cenk Tosun has started each of the six friendlies – scoring on three occasions – due to Burak Yilmaz’ injury woes since a move to China. The latter emerged from the bench to signal his comeback against Montenegro at the weekend but after a period on the sidelines, may have to rely on sub appearances unless Terim decides to risk him. Clearly, Yilmaz (8.0) is the number one when fully fit but with questions over his match sharpness, Tosun, at a price of 6.0 in Uefa, may well retain his starting berth over the group stages at least.

At the back, Terim’s decision to utilise a number of midfielders in defence in recent matches lessens our options. Caner Erkin and Mehmet Topal have started each of the last four at left-back and centre-half, for example, which limits the viable options on offer. Right-back Gokhan Gonul looks to have established himself as a regular of late and started three of those last four – at a price of 4.5 in Uefa, he could be worth considering for those in search of a budget enabler.

The Long Shots

In the centre of the park, Selcuk Inan comes in at 7.0 after starting all but one of the qualifiers. The Galatasaray man has since been named in the first XI in only three of the subsequent friendlies, though, as Terim chops and changes his options. Providing he can retain his regular role, Inan’s all-round style of play seems more suited to DraftKings – he sits in the top four for shots and key passes and also takes a top two spot for successful tackles and interceptions in the qualifiers.

Volkan Sen looks to have emerged as a more secure option in recent friendlies and has started three of the last four. Named in the first XI in only four of the qualifiers, he comes in at just 5.5 in the Uefa game, suggesting he has the potential to emerge as an under the radar pick for our five-man midfields.

Fancy them very much with their group and since they come in cheap, want to take a risk with my 5th mid ( not to mention I have Martial and Gotze too but let's ignore that...).

So, do you know who's the most likely to start?

But do you want to punt on a player who plays on the last day and you won't be able to subsitute him? + I have no idea who will start from the cheapies.

    Does anyone know......

On the official Uefa Euro 2016 McDonalds Fantasy...... if you change your captain after he has played to a player yet to play - do you get the bonus points on your new captain? (I know you lose any bonus off your original captain).

I would imagine you couldn't change you captain but the rules say you can.

If you change your captain, you lose the double points on your original captain, but your new captain's score will be doubled once he plays. Hope that makes sense.

        Yes, cheers.
That's what I read it as.
So in theory - could you captain a France player on Friday, then if he doesn't have a blinder, swap your armband (not substitute the player out) to an England player for Saturday. Then if England bomb, swap the captain again to a German on Sunday (Again, possibly keeping the England player on the pitch but swapping the armband to a German who was already on your pitch) .. and basically do this daily ?

Seems very silly the set up if it is like this.....

It's pretty good imo along with the manual subs and gives active managers the edge over people who just pick their team and don't touch it after that.

I guess... but I would appreciate the bonus of choosing e.g. Janko from the start of the gameweek as captain and getting the points. Whereas someone who makes 4 or 5 captain changes may well get the same points as me even though they picked e.g. Giroud, then Ali, then Muller, then etc. etc.

Not really fair I don't think. Active substitutions I agree on totally though.

If you don't make any active substitutions and some of your players do not play, then subs should be automatically promoted from your bench as in FPL.

But if you manage your team actively and make your own substitutions each day, replacing your underperformers who have already played by other players who have yet to play, then there will be no auto-subbing.

That's how these things usually work, anyway.

well I don't know any concrete statistics but I'll give you my opinion.

Muller. He is a different animal for Germany, he wants goals so badly, and you can guarantee he'll get them, the fact he has the likes of Kroos Ozil etc behind him helps tremendously too.

Ronaldo. Arguably the best player in the world, the teams talisman and if Portugal score it'll be him. Problem is with Portugal is that they don't score many goals. They don't have the same fluidity as some of the top teams.

So, Kanté did the job in front of the defence very fine. He kept his position, won possession, distributed the ball, fine passing forward without missing his passes. For me, this says he will start the Euros in that position, and the only question now really is about the left wing: Payet or Martial. Imo, Payet.

However, it was predictable that Kanté will have no problems against Scotland. Despite a great performance, I'm not convinced. Defence wise, perhaps I am, because if he kept his position against Scotland, sure he won't start wandering against better teams. But attack wise not. For instance, Pogba seemed to drop deeper, which is not optimal. At least if France plays with Martial instead of Payet. because that makes the distance between midfields and forwards too long.

    1. Davido989
      • 15 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

I'd start Payet too. Martial will have many international comps to play in - Payet has had the better season and has been better for France too.

    2. Camp No No
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

Let's precise on the last point: Pogba seemed to drop lower when France had the ball. To gather the ball. Meanwhile, he played perhaps higher up the field than usually when pressing. But I'd say this was the effect of Scotland's passiveness. Maybe likely to happen against Romania and Albania too, as I can't see them not defend deep.

Haven't compared the heat maps or touches yet.

Fleetwood Town will get 25% of Vardy's transfer. That's around 6.3M euros.

Hope they will reach Championship then. Very lovely club.

An incredibly talented sportsman who deserves to be recognised as the greatest.

Man Utd do historically (with many players) have a record of paying far more than a player is worth and then making them far worse than they were in the 1st place, tbh. Not just LVG. Looks like they're going to do it again with Eric - what's his face. If you're good enough to be worth 55 million euros (what they're reportedly offering) someone other than your own mother and Mourinho should have heard of you.

Arsenal require a true top class striker. Giroud and Vardy are both not that. I don't think Vardy is a good fit for Arsenal as has already been pointed out by yourself his strength is on the counter attack.

Guys, does it make any sense to build your team presuming that it is best to keep your wildcard for the 1/4-finals, or you still believe it is optimal to use it before the last games in the groups?

    1. Hurricane Gilbert
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

Early on after GW1 as it allows you to jump on Belgium/Italy, and because you have unlimited transfers after the group stage.

      • 10 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

There is no optimal plan. Have in mind that some key players for their teams may be rested in the last match in group stages if 1st place is secure. So you can't plan it, I'm thinking of using my WC in GW3 but that doesn't affect my choice of players. Simply pick the ones that you think will score the most over the next 2/3 games, regardless of your wildcard plans - that would be my advice.

      1. Paramaribo
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 9 months ago

OK - but what would happen if let's say 12 of the players you have chosen for the Last 16 round are out for the 1/4-finals? Or in such a case you would be let to transfer these out for free as well?

          • 10 Years
          9 years, 9 months ago

          You get 6 free transfers.

It is not 6 but only 4. That is why I came up with the idea that it may be a good think to have your WC kept for the 1/4-finals.
