Our analysis of the Group E teams picks up pace now as we turn our afternoon attentions to Republic of Ireland. Martin O’Neill’s troops get their tournament underway on Monday June 13 against Sweden at 5pm before squaring up to Belgium five days later at 2pm and finishing up with a head-to-head with Italy on Wednesday June 22 at 8pm.

Road to Qualification

Ireland finished third in qualifying Group D, just four points behind winners Germany and three off Poland after chalking up five victories and three draws in ten matches.

O’Neill’s men scored 19 times and conceded on seven occasions, though 11 of those strikes arrived against whipping boys Gibraltar. Indeed, outwith that pair of matches, Ireland found the net more than once in just one of eight group fixtures.

Defensively, two of their four clean sheets were also picked up against Gibraltar, though Ireland were fairly resilient nonetheless, and conceded more than a single goal on just one occasion – a narrow 2-1 defeat in Poland which forced they into a two-legged play-off against Bosnia. After drawing 1-1 on their travels, O’Neill’s side won 2-0 at home to clinch a place in the summer tournament.

Casting an eye over their recent friendlies, Ireland have played five times across the previous 12 months. Undefeated against fellow finalists England (0-0), Switzerland (1-0) and Slovakia (2-2), they also clinched a 1-1 draw against Holland last week before O’Neill’s decision to hand a number of fringe players the chance to impress backfired in their final friendly and resulted in a 2-1 home loss to Belarus.

Most Appearances Robbie Brady, John O’Shea (11), Jeff Hendrick, Wes Hoolahan, Jon Walters (10), Robbie Keane, Shane Long, James McCarthy, James McClean, Glenn Whelan (9), Seamus Coleman, Aidan McGeady (8).

Most goalsRobbie Keane, Jon Walters (5), Shane Long (3), James McClean, Aidan McGeady (2).

Most assists Jeff Hendrick, Wes Hoolahan (3), Robbie Keane (2), Seamus Coleman, James McCarthy, Aidan McGeady, Darren Randolph (1).

The Key Targets

With Robbie Keane still an injury concern after picking up calf complaint in training last weekend, Shane Long looks a secure pick up top. Versatile enough to feature wide right in a 4-3-3 or through the middle if O’Neill opts for a 4-2-3-1 set-up, the Southampton forward ended the season in fine form with three goals and as many assists in the final six Gameweeks. Priced at 6.5 in the Uefa game, Long – who netted three times in just 308 minutes over the qualifiers – is the most popular Irish player and is owned by 4% of Fantasy managers.

Robbie Brady’s delivery from the left looks key for Ireland’s prospects. The Norwich man created more chances than any team-mate and, as the main man for dead-ball duties, led the way by some distance for crossing. Brady was also top for successful tackles but O’Neill’s decision to occasionally utilise him as a left-back may deter many from investing in the 6.0-priced midfielder.

Joint-top scorer in qualifying, Jon Walters also produced more attempts on goal than any team-mate and, like Long, can be utilised out wide or through the middle by O’Neill. After missing training due to a calf complaint in midweek, though, his acquisition – at 7.0 and listed as a forward – looks a little risky.

Between the posts, Darren Randolph is the easy on the budget option at just 4.5 in Uefa. Having started five of six matches prior to the midweek loss to Belarus, the West Ham number two seems to have climbed above Shay Given in the pecking order and should certainly provide us with plenty of save points, though clean sheets look very debatable.

The Long Shots

O’Neill’s recent friendly line-ups seem to have cast question marks over his preferred options in the final third. Wes Hoolahan earned three assists over the qualifiers and also registered double-figures for shots and key passes but there are question marks building over his pitch time. Priced at just 6.0, the Norwich playmaker – who had started eight of the qualifiers – seems to have fallen down the pecking order of late and has been named in the XI in just one of the last four.

Aiden McGeady (6.0) and James McClean (5.5) have both started two of those recent four friendlies and – as evidenced by a couple of goals apiece in qualifying – they could deliver the points if afforded the pitch time.

If he can prove his fitness in time, Robbie Keane’s wealth of experience could still prove a valuable weapon in Ireland’s attempt to make it to the knockout stages. Joint-top scorer in qualifying with Walters despite playing over 450 minutes less than the Stoke man, Keane’s 7.5 price tag is likely to deter most, though.

Glenn Whelan may be one to consider as a budget enabler in the DraftKings offering. The combative Stoke midfielder – who managed ten key passes – should excel when it comes to defensive actions, as he sat first and second for interceptions and successful tackles over the qualifiers.

Considering the calibre of opposition forwards, there’s an understandable lack of faith in Ireland’s backline. Whilst Seamus Coleman’s 5.5 price tag seems somewhat on the steep side in the Uefa game, his all-action displays down the flank could benefit from the DraftKings scoring system. John O’Shea (5.0) looks another secure pick in the back-four but the cheaper Randolph will at least have save points to bolster his appeal should O’Neill’s men fail to keep out their opponents.

Been playing the uefa/fifa games for over 12 years and have a very good record.

Lessons learnt over the years are that the template team on here is usually a fail. This is down in large to the instinct to play it like FPL. This causes a massive over thinking and you are usually outscored by casual players.

The uefa site is a joke, and one substitution and change of formation can ruin all your hard work and ruin your entire campaign This did not use to be the case, only in last 4 years.

For the last World Cup I played Macdonalds and the Daily Mirror game. The Mirror game is exactly like FPL (run by the same people) and would suit a lot on here much better than McDonald's. The site is 100% reliable too.

The players at the very top are still usually FFS'ers.

You also neglect to mention that the scoring has changed this year to be very similar to the main FPL game which is going to benefit the people here.

Anyway this is all luck based due to the small number of gameweeks so good luck.

Thanks for the tip. I created my own team initally without looking at any posts on here, but found after I came on here, my squad became a template team. Since then though, I've done a bit of my own thinking, and now my team looks nothing like the templates. I have Kane and Nolito up front for a start, unlike every single other person who has picked Giroud. Got any special picks that nobody's mentioned that you'd recommend?

Similar situation on playing Uefa fantasy games.
But this year was #2 OR, so the site its much better now πŸ™‚

On a serious note. You are right.
But this year they changed it again, and unlike WC 2014, you can do FT in between GWs…and they cancelled all that extra points for center backs and defensive midfielders

I want do upgrade Mak to Junuzovic (better team, better fixtures) but need 0.5M. Who to downgrade?

    A) Hector/Rami/Schar/Juanfran --> Dragovic (who)
    B) Denayer --> Lindelof/Strinic (are they nailed?)
    C) keep Mak, Junuzovic not essential

Wolud do B for The Hoff.

Belgium seems very leaky. Even Courtois does not look at his best.
And Lindeloff its one of their best defenders. And a decent punt.

No idea, but I think you probably need defenders from both teams in your squad. In fact, you probably need German and English defence as well.

ah I see, LR took a break, so I think that's the issue

I have been in LAWR since it started, oddly enough the season it started was the season after my 3K rank so I started in League 3. I got saved from relegation by someone dropping out, then I finished 4th but managed to get promotion when someone else dropped. Finished 2nd in League 2 this year

But it means if I take a year out I go back to the bottom of the pyramid

I think the arguments against this team are:

De Gea is not guaranteed a start
Ramos and Boateng are expensive options when you can get more attacking threat in Alba and Hector
Pogba is a bit of everything but not enough in a fantasy team way - Payet, or even Matuidi, will offer more point scoring opportunities
Personally, I dont fancy Vardy either - I think Woy will start Rooney and Kane together up front

    A - Greizmann, Matuidi &Kroos
    B - Giroud, Ozil & Fabregas

    Team as it stands is:
    Sommer / Rui Patricio
    Juanfran / Dier / Kosc / Dragovic / Glik
    Alaba / Matuidi / Perisic / Kroos / Mak
    Muller / Kane / Griezmann

I guess I will swap Cedric for Denayer then, and Sommer for Rui Patricio.

But how certain is De Gea of starting over Casilas?
I see only 2% have selected Casilas whereas 24% have De Gea.

I agree on that. But aside from Alexis, Arsenal's wide options are average or just above.

Walcott, Ox, Welbeck, Ramsey. Eek. Meh. Bleurgh.

I agree with the current options not being ideal, but signing Mahrez and playing him there is not a solution. Wenger will be looking(if at all) for a winger who will track back a lot. Look at how he prefers Ramsey to Walcott in that RW position, Mahrez is not the answer.

Or rather, capability to track back seeing as Ramsey is hopelessly trying to get too forward and fails to cover adequately. At least he has got a great engine though. πŸ™

I genuinely don't know if you have followed Wenger's wingers-full-back conundrums. He plays sets of attacking FBs and non-tracking back wingers on only only one side if he has the available personnel. Almost never plays both sides.

So, who at Arsenal actually would be playing RW ahead of Mahrez? Can't think of anybody. Sure, a bit of rotation would take place, as should too, but Mahrez would be the first choice.

              Sanchez possibly. Ramsey possibly.

Sanchez, Özil, Xhaka, Cazorla, Ramsey. Tell me who gets dropped for Mahrez?

In addition, Mahrez has had a stay-at-home fullback behind him at Leicester. Bellerin isn't that. Does that work? How does it affect Mahrez? How does it affect Bellerin. How does it affect Arsenal's weak defensive right flank?

Obviously if Mahrez were to go to Arsenal he'd play plenty of games. But the Arsenal midfield would also become even more of a rotation minefield.

But Ramsey is arguably a better and certainly a more proven player than Mahrez. So maybe what is easy for you won't look the same to the guy actually picking the team. Which is actually what counts. πŸ˜•

Many things can be argued, but the argument for Ramsey being better wide player than Mahrez doesn't seem very strong to me. I can point Mahrez's full season of supremacy for a counter argument.

And if Wenger wants Mahrez, then he isn't convinced by the superiority of his current RW's either. Remember, he's many times stated that he's ready to spend, but only on a quality that improves his XI. He's not buying squad players. Only promising youngsters, or guys who are better than what he has. Mahrez isn't in the former bracket, so he must be in the latter, for Wenger at least.

And for Arsenal's hopes of success, their midfield should be more of "a rotation minefield" and less of an injury minefield of overplayed players.

I am not sure but isn't the belief that a settled team is better for title chances rather than heavy rotation?

There's a lot of room between "heavy rotation" and "no rotation". The key players, in particular, should be given some rotation time to time.

Arsenal has done the opposite and exhausted the key players. A team that is rotated as little as Arsenal, while playing both the domestic league and the CL, gets plagued by injuries in the mid season and then has to rely on players who are not in form since they have spent all season on bench.

ok, I just presumed 'rotation-minefield' would mean heavy rotation.

I'm not sure what it was meant to mean, it's not my words originally. What I meant by it is what I explained below. Wenger sticks to one XI too much, particularly seen how big squad he tends to have, so I think it would be beneficial for them to get a bit more rotation in it. For both resting and tactical reasons.

                  2. Camp No No

E.g. I think one of Wenger's great mistakes is his failure to give Özil enough rest during the season. Cazorla is a very apt replacement, so there should be rotation for the no. 10 position. Özil plays it normally, sometimes Cazorla starts in it, or Özil is subbed out and Cazorla takes that post. Now they'll also have enough CM's to give Cazorla some rest in turn.

That's not at all the same thing as saying that he'd be the first choice, but there will be rotation, which is what I said.

Maybe you are one of those who can't agree with themselves.

And having won that argument, Camp No No will now proceed to settle the debate on "how many Angels can stand on the end of a pin".

A squad player = someone that gets rotated.
A secure starter = someone that starts (almost) every game when fit.

Secure starters at Arsenal are Cech, Bellerin, Koscielny, Monreal, Xhaka, Özil, Sanchez and possibly Cazorla.

Everyone else is a squad player. I think that would include Mahrez if he went there.

Monreal might be sold and Xhaka hasn't played a game yet. I wouldn't say either of them are secure. Wenger loves Ramsey and always find a position for him, so if Mahrez is signed, Ramsey will be in the pivot with Cazorla.

He won't be the centre of the play at a club like Arsenal, so his effectiveness dies down. He will not make the XI at Arsenal.

In England, it's more to do with the journo than the paper. Here's some good follows on twitter:

Ben Smith, Paul Joyce, David Ornstein, Tony Barrett.

Mahrez was player of the season last year and rightfully so. Perhaps behind Sanchez on quality, but other than that he is unquestionably better than every other Arsenal player. That said, I'd hate to see him leave Leicester. Arsenal don't deserve him.
