Our final article on the Group E teams sees us cast an eye over Sweden’s prospects. Erik Hamren’s men get their campaign up and running against Republic of Ireland on Monday June 13 at 5pm before taking on Italy four days later at 2pm and group favourites Belgium on Wednesday June 22 at 8pm.

Road to Qualification

Sweden finished third in qualifying Group G, ten points behind top dogs Austria after winning five and drawing three of their ten fixtures. Although Hamren’s side were far from explosive and scored on just 15 occasions, they remained relatively consistent and found the net in nine of those matches.

At the back, however, Sweden were far from convincing – they mustered just three clean sheets, with two arriving against whipping boys Moldova.

Pitted against Denmark in the play-offs, the Swedes followed up a 2-1 home win with a 2-2 away draw three days later to book their place on the plane to France.

In terms of recent friendlies, yesterday’s 3-0 win over Wales was only Sweden’s second victory in seven matches over the last 12 months. Aside from a 3-0 triumph over Finland, they’ve also chalked up draws against Norway (0-0), Estonia (1-1) Czech Republic (1-1) and Slovenia (0-0) and lost 2-1 to Turkey.

It’s worth noting, though, that talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic – who scored three of their four play-off goals against the Danes – played a part in just three of those friendlies.

Most Appearances Andreas Isaksson (12), Andreas Granqvist, Kim Kallstrom, Seb Larsson (11), Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Martin Olsson (10), Mikael Antonsson, Erkan Zengin (9), Pierre Bengtsson, Jimmy Durmaz, Albin Ekdal, Emil Forsberg (8), Marcus Berg (7)

Most goals Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11), Erkan Zengin (3), Marcus Berg (2)

Most assists Jimmy Durmaz (3), Erkan Zengin, Kim Kallstrom, Mikael Lustig (2)

The Key Targets

It’s impossible to look past Zlatan Ibrahimovic as Sweden’s likeliest source of Fantasy returns. Given that Belgium, Italy and Ireland managed five, four and four clean sheets respectively, the Man United target will fancy his chances of adding to the 11 goals accrued over the qualifying period. Priced at 11.0 and owned by 7% of managers, he is far and away the most expensive member of Hamren’s side and there seems little doubt that, if the Swedes are to progress, Zlatan will have a say in the matter.

Bearing in mind that only three Sweden players produced ten or more attempts in the qualifiers, the number of valid options in the final third are somewhat limited. Apart from Ibrahimovic, Marcus Berg was the best of the rest in terms of goal threat – although he scored just twice, he fired just six shots less inside the opposition box. Priced at 7.0 he is far kinder on the budget that his strike partner – although he has the potential to offer value, he’s far less reliable than the former PSG man.

Emil Forsberg nailed down a role on the left towards the end of the qualifying campaign and grabbed a crucial goal in the play-off win over Denmark. Priced at just 5.5, he was third in qualifying when it came to both shots inside the box and efforts on target – Forsberg highlighted his threat yesterday by bagging the opener against Chris Coleman’s side.

A goal and assist in the win over Wales brings Mikael Lustig into contention. Costing 5.0, the raiding right-back is cheaper on the budget than the likes of Martin Olsson and Andreas Granqvist (5.5 apiece) as a route into a defence with a single goal against in three. Lustig bettered Olsson by two assists to zero in qualifying and has looked a real threat inside the opposition box in recent matches.

The Long Shots

Seb Larsson seems to have ousted Jimmy Durmaz from the right flank role in recent outings. The Sunderland man has started both his nation’s friendlies over the last week or so and has been handed a share of corners though, at 6.5, is more expensive than fellow winger Forsberg.

Kim Kallstrom’s all-round style of play could be better suited to the Draft Kings game. Priced at 6.0 in Uefa, he’s the main man for corners and was second and third for crosses and key passes respectively. Furthermore, the Grasshoppers playmaker was second top for Sweden when it came to interceptions.

Available for a mere 4.0 in Uefa, Viktor Nilsson Lindelof had looked an ideal budget enabler prior to yesterday. The centre-half had started each of the last three friendlies alongside Granqvist in the heart of defence but Hamren’s decision to field Erik Johansson places enough doubt against Lindelof’s minutes to render him too much of a risk for most.

    Which two defenders?

    A) Juanfran + Srna
    B) Juanfran + Ramos (double-up)

    - Currently on the first one as Srna is on set pieces and it spreads the chances of a cleanie.

I dont understand the argument "spreading the chances of a cleanie". Yes you increase your chance of 1 clean sheet but greatly reduce the chance of 2. If Ramos is more likely to get a clean sheet than Srna then regardless of the rest of your team your expected score is higher. You will have a bigger variance when you double or triple up but high risk high reward is the best way to play 🙂

    Quick question.

Germany play just before Poland on the same day. Would I be able to change captaincy from Muller to Lewandowski before Lewa's match gets over?

So basically out of 552 players competing we're all picking a squad from this pool of about 60 players to make a 15-man squad? Anyone outside of this group is pretty much a differential on here...

DDG, Sommer, Rui Patricio, Almer, Kozacik

Alba, Ramos, Juanfran, Rodriguez, Schar, Hector, Giaccherini, Dragovic, Rami, Smalling, Dier, Denayer, Gonul, Hinteregger, Howedes, Lindelof, (Strinic/ Vrsaljko), (Wawrzyniak/ Jedrzejczyk), (von Bergen/ Djourou), (Eliseu/ Guerreiro)

Silva, Fabregas, Ozil, Kroos, KDB, Hazard, Mak, Hamsik, Weiss, Perisic, Calhanoglu, Candreva, Grosicky, Konoplyanka, Alaba, Junozovic, Stanciu, Forsberg, Dzsudzsak, Alli, Payet, Matuidi

This is the happiest I've been, thanks for all previous replies and help. I'm aware I have Ronaldo to most people's KDB, it's just a feeling of mine that Ronaldo is a better captain option and it spreads my daily captains around better with KDB playing on the same day as Morata plus it's nice having Ronaldo up my sleeve. I'm a Euro noob and have joined Disable's money league, so taking this very seriously. Any obvious flaws with that set up?

Ricardo Rodriguez & Hector Bellerín providing the width from the flanks; Alexis almost operating as a second striker. Just needs a pure striker and maybe a centre-back.

Agreed on the keepers, but I'm allowing myself an Irish indulgence and Kozacik is the only real option that rotates with Ireland for cheap.

Konoplyanka, I just have a feeling that there's a gaping hole down Germany's flanks this year defensively and that could suit Ukraine perfectly, with Northern Ireland in GW2. Another alternative I was considering was Payet but he's just not nailed..

          • 12 Years

Hmm fair enough on Konoplyanka, he just really disappointed me in Europa fantasy this year and I don't really fancy Ukraine at all (should be bottom of their group by my reckoning).

Anybody wanna help me with my draft league team? The basic need to knows are its McDonalds scoring and this is picking for the group stage only, we'll re-draft for the knockouts. We picked squads of 19 over a week ago but are only taking 15 players so we need to drop 1 player from each position before the tourney starts. There are a bunch of players I'm definitely taking but I need to drop one from each of these:

    GKs - Hennessey, Babacan
    Defenders - Clyne, Giaccherini, Vermaelen
    Mids - Xhaka, Schurrle
    Forwards - Harnik, Embolo, Yilmaz

      Baba
      Clyne

                  I'm glad to hear.

Speaking of transfer rumours. What you make of Vardy. I see it as a decent upgrade on Walcott and a good signing but I guess it's sad from a Leicester prospective

I'm getting on OK. Been on holidays about two weeks now. Spent the first week out getting lit and pretty much spent the second sitting around taking in the sun

No plans at all. Few nights out. Ufc 200 etc. And yourself

Yeah that's how I see it (if it happens). A decent upgrade on Walcott and hopefully we get most of the cash back pawning Walcott out to West Ham or Liverpool. Usually I'd be confident of milking the most out a sale to Manchester but I think Pep and Mou are smarter than that.

That's nice to hear, carefree summers are the best. I'm off to Amsterdam in a week but then when I get back its head down job hunting for me.

        10 years, 1 month ago

        Thanks Walsh 🙂

Just as some background Xhaka was my last pick as an Arsenal biased fan, interesting to see you all agree on taking the substitute upside risk/reward from Schurrle over the banked 6 appearance points. Harnik was my 4th round pick but yeah I've cooled on him a bit since so that's why he's up there with Embolo (15th round) and Yilmaz (17th round). Defence I missed the boat on the nailed big team players so here we are.

        1. Walsh
          • 12 Years

Yeah defense is far and away my main concern....very easy to reason that you have 0 starters from that group. Embolo seems high upside and I love Yilmaz, even though I don't think Harnik is bad at all. Don't mind Xhaka either in general, but just plays deep and probably hard to come by for points versus the other mids you have.

      Babacan
Clyne (I think Walker is ahead of him and Vermaelen/Giachherini are likely to play)

What do we call each day of matches?

Gameday 1/2/3/4/5 or Matchday 1/2/3/4/5 or what?

Anyway, who's your *whatever word we agree on* 2 captain?

    1. Walsh
      • 12 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

Gameweek 1 with matchday 1/2/3/4/5 is how I've been referring to it at least in my own brain...great captaincy options for each matchday just a matter of how you structure the squad. At minimum I'd look to be able to rotate on each of your three forwards with a mid sprinkled in here or there. Hopefully you hit big early so you don't have to stress late on.

      1. Ayew Serious
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 1 month ago

        That sounds perfect. Cheers Walsh

Ye. I'm thinking my three forwards, Grosicki/Gotze and Alaba.

Alaba probably the weakest option but also my last resort

        1. Walsh
          • 12 Years
          10 years, 1 month ago

Yep seems fine to me. Realistically other than CR7 there is no real good captaincy option for that last day. Hopefully it doesn't come to that if you don't have him...but if I'm looking at a 5 or a 6 from my captain going into the last day I'd probably stick.

Slow on here.....so throwing up my team first time on FFS...any feedback would be appreciated..

    Kozacik / Almer
    Juanfran / Bonucci / Hector / Rami / Rodriguez
    Hamsik / Glushakov / Fabregas / Januzovic / Perisic
    Muller / Giroud / Ibrahimovic

Don't know who Glushakov is (guessing he's Russian). Team looks great apart from that. Like the Zlatan pick (you're in the minority there compared to FFS).

Cheers Jazz. Yeah Glush is Russian, seems likely to be nailed they just got an injury to the dude who was ahead of him. The benefit from having an early playing 4.5 does wonders for overall solidity I'm happy enough to have that fifth mid be bad, play early, and likely one of my three subs.

All good to great apart from Kozacik and Glushakov but I understand why you picked them. Ibra's a big money sink, have a look what you can do with the two cheapies mentioned if you do Ibra -> Nolito.

I've played around with no Ibra but I sort of love him as a cheeky diff and genuine outstanding cap option for GW1. Nolito I also like but I still worry Del Bosque will play to his old guard and start Pedro instead of him. Having your third striker not be nailed is a big problem I don't want to sweat team sheets in general, but noted. Have looked at some 8.5 - 7.5 strikers instead of him and still might go that route...food for thought though thanks as always Balders.

You think it's worth putting up 10m for GK pairing? I was on Sommer / Almer for a while but found the .5 savings useful...

          10 years, 1 month ago

If the cash is there, I think its worth it, personally I'm on 9.5 with Sommer/McGovern but I may downgrade a defender to get that Sommer/Almer pairing.

McGovern seems way worse than Koz to me...group is awful and Slovakia have been playing some good footy recently, but yeah, might go back to the 5/5 gk pairing. Getting a clean out of keeper seems very important to keep the score total ticking over.

              10 years, 1 month ago

Yeah, but I want Sommer for sure and Slovakia and Switzerland play on the same day in the first two gameweeks so Sommer/Kozacik is out of the window.

Yep Sommer and Koz playing on the same day is so annoying. They'd be great if they didn't play same day...but if you're bullish on Swiss cleans it's fair.

Doubling it up with Rodriguez too, if it doesn't pan out with a couple of other double ups I can just ditch this fantasy game early 😛

Think Fab is nailed. Sort of a swiss army knife can play in a variety of positions he seems safe. At 7.0 I'm feeling him although it surely could backfire. Maybe I'll keep searching for someone else in that price range...I do love Calhanoglu...

It looks alright to me. Again I'm only after creating a team so not quite sure what I'm doing.

Seen a lot of Junozovics and few Alabas. Why?

Feel like he's a better shout in open play when they should be bossing 2 of the 3 group games playing way farther forward than Alaba. Alaba is heavily reliant on set pieces / pens for his returns in my mind although his stats are pretty fine in open play. Just sort of like the feels I get with Januzovic...idk....Alaba is probably a better pick 🙂 The .5 savings isn't nothing either. All the .5 savings I find really add up with getting good nailed defenders etc...

Just trying to get as many playing really within budget.
    Thoughts? 4-3-3 initially

    Hector - Alba - Rodriguez - Lichtsteiner
    Alaba - Martial - Pogba
    Griezemann - Ronaldo - Carrasco

    @Balders

Just curious, what's your team currently shaped up as? 🙂

      • 12 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

      Sommer, McGovern
      Alba, Juanfran, Rodriguez, Denayer, Hinteregger
De Bruyne, Payet, Sigurdsson, Junuzovic, Stanciu
      Muller, Giroud, Embolo

McGover, Alba Denayer and Embolo may yet change. If I'm not confident on Embolo, he almost certainly becomes Nolito. Alba may be downgraded to redistribute funds.

      1. Walsh
        • 12 Years

Hinteregger not starting last friendly got me scared, Alba to Pique and Hint to Drag even seems worthwhile. I'm also nervous about Denayer playing all three...he has so many options on how to run out the defense seems like they could be one bad game and conceding two away from Denayer being forsaken. I like Embolo a lot though I think he's a nice pick. Having three outfield players on the final day doesn't seem ideal either, but it's nitpicking. Know you didn't put it up for an RMT but here we are 🙂

          • 12 Years
          10 years, 1 month ago

Pique and Dragovic hugely blunts attacking threat though which I think is vital to milking out the most of defenders with no bonus points at play. If I were going to upgrade Hinteregger for another Austrian I'd find an extra £1.5m for Fuchs.

I get the sentiment on 3 outfielders on the last matchday, but I do really like their potential and do want to get too hung up on strategy if it means ditching players I like. I've found that over and over in UCL fantasy and UFPL that I've played too rigidly on strategy and missed good scores from players I liked because I ditched them for player X on matchday Y.

At least you'll get Austria's team before having to commit so you'll know if he's starting or not. Makes it slightly less risky and as you say he *should* start..

    What about this draft?
    Patricio - Kozacik
    Juanfran - Schar - Rami - Dragovic - Vrsaljko
    Payet - Perisic - Candreva - Forsberg - Stanciu
    Ronaldo - Muller - Morata

Love the Candreva shout. Little risky with those 2 5.5 mids...but the front line is tidy business. I don't love Vrsaljko as a pick he doesn't seem too nailed to me...sort of like Chester as my favorite 4.5 option in the game. Rest looks nice to me 🙂

Vrsaljko not nailed at all mate, Strinic is currently the front runner for the LB slot. Otherwise defence is fine 🙂

Not sure on Candreva, Italy don't score many. Forsberg and Stanciu both 5th mid options imo, I wouldn't consider either for a 4th but who knows, could work out.

Try downgrade Morata to Nolito or Ronaldo to Giroud, see what you can do with the funds.

Thanks both. Currently on A, but a good thing in C is that I will have Hamsik and Cesc as captain choices for Day 2 and Day 4 (surely better than Mak and Juanfran as captains?).. Then leaving Ozil could really hurt so probably A is the way to go!
