England and Iceland go head-to-head at 8pm as the Euro 2016 Round of 16 comes to an end.

Both sides were runners-up in their respective groups on the back of a win and two draws apiece, though there’s no question that the underlying stats are in favour of the Three Lions.

Given that Iceland have averaged just 28.3% possession so far, it’s fair to say that their opponents will be expected to dominate proceedings as the Scandinavians sit deep. As we saw against Slovakia, though, Roy Hodson’s side have toiled to break down obstinate opponents – they registered 29 unsuccessful attempts in their goalless draw against Slovakia.

England produced almost three times the number of attempts on goal (64 to 23) than their opponents over the group stages, though despite a wealth of options in the final third, currently lack a cutting edge and have scored just three times so far.

Iceland have found the net on more occasions (four) but given they’ve managed just nine shots on target, it remains to be seen if they can maintain a lofty 17.4% goal conversion rate – the highest in the tournament.

At the back, England again have reason for optimism. Hodgson’s men allowed a single big chance against in the group stages – less than any other side – and conceded just 11 efforts inside the box.

Iceland, on the other hand, have afforded the opposition 25 efforts in the penalty area, which bodes well for the Three Lions’ chances of grabbing the win that would see them square up to tournament favourites France in the quarter-final stage next time out.

In this game, having non-playing players on bench just isn't worth it. Just wildcard, you're unlikely going to need it later anyway.

      1. JÆKS ⭐

Haha you might be able to change my mind on this after all 😀

What would you do with this team?

        Hennessey DDG*
        Meunier Hector DIER* RAMI* Jedr...
        Kdb Ramsey Payet Kroos PERISIC*
        Muller Giroud Bale

I'll need at least a GK since I don't fancy Hennessey. Would consider Griezman and Gomez instead of Giroud and Muller, Blaszy rather than Kroos, Giaccherini and Koscielny in defence, Patricio as a gk, Ronaldo rather than Bale maybe. Hazard in middfield as well. Not sure if these changes are all worth it though.....

          Oh darn, 4 guys out!

Other than that, it looks good. I wouldn't have Giroud against that Iceland defence, though. The rest I like. Maybe more Belgium and less Wales. Not Bale out, but Ramsey and Jedr and Hennessy. Instead, have Hazard at least.

            • 11 Years
            10 years, 22 days ago

Indeed, same thoughts about Giroud as well against this team. Think I fancy Ronaldo more since he also is a captaincy option, and ofcourse we will 4-0 again .... 😉

But this team, to wc or not? 😀

              Wildcard.

I wouldn't count Poland out either. They're not bad. This will be 4 tight matches, Belgium the true shot for me.

            10 years, 22 days ago

So, after all, I don't like it that much, in fact. I would wildcard it. I like Müller, he's getting the chances, will get the goals, but I see the Gomez transfer. Your ideas are good, I wouldn't get French defence, they'll have yet a new CB pair, and a new DM, and already have problems defending set pieces in which Iceland is top notch.
