England and Iceland go head-to-head at 8pm as the Euro 2016 Round of 16 comes to an end.

Both sides were runners-up in their respective groups on the back of a win and two draws apiece, though there’s no question that the underlying stats are in favour of the Three Lions.

Given that Iceland have averaged just 28.3% possession so far, it’s fair to say that their opponents will be expected to dominate proceedings as the Scandinavians sit deep. As we saw against Slovakia, though, Roy Hodson’s side have toiled to break down obstinate opponents – they registered 29 unsuccessful attempts in their goalless draw against Slovakia.

England produced almost three times the number of attempts on goal (64 to 23) than their opponents over the group stages, though despite a wealth of options in the final third, currently lack a cutting edge and have scored just three times so far.

Iceland have found the net on more occasions (four) but given they’ve managed just nine shots on target, it remains to be seen if they can maintain a lofty 17.4% goal conversion rate – the highest in the tournament.

At the back, England again have reason for optimism. Hodgson’s men allowed a single big chance against in the group stages – less than any other side – and conceded just 11 efforts inside the box.

Iceland, on the other hand, have afforded the opposition 25 efforts in the penalty area, which bodes well for the Three Lions’ chances of grabbing the win that would see them square up to tournament favourites France in the quarter-final stage next time out.

    Patricio
    Hector - Koscielny - Vermaelen - Meunier
    Nani - Hazard - Payet
    Griezmann - Lukaku (c) - CR7

    Any suggestions?

Lagerbäck after the game when told Woy resigned, 'that's the only sorrow in this, cause it was Bob(Houghton) and him that brought me in, teached me and even if it sounds strange he is a part of this success. A small part but still a part as one of my first mentors, if it wasn't for Bob and him I would maybe not have reached this far in my career'.

Also said he felt quite calm during the game and that Iceland also had the best scoring chances besides the goals and that as Englands desperation grew everything just got easier. Thought Iceland played close to perfect in defence todqy but not yet pleased overall, still things to improve.

I wouldn't suppose they are happy to play Iceland after this, indeed. It's clear Iceland was better than England, anyway, and against England, I think France would have known what to do, and also could trust on being better. But Iceland is another thing completely. I'm sure England know how Iceland play their set pieces and had practiced defending them. Yet the first throw in lead to a goal. France's defensive 6 (GK and DM included) have hardly played together, and have problems in defending set pieces already. they have to figure out how to defend against that. I think France will do much better job in opening that Iceland defence than England did though.

Yep, you have a point there about France being more able to break through and opening up the defence.

Do you know who is likely to come in for Rami now?
Will it be a straight swap or some sort of reshuffle?

Koscielny moving to right in any case, then it can be either Umtiti or Mangala, most likely the latter although everybody in France seems to prefer Umtiti, and I can totally see why. Mangala is sheet, but not a clean sheet.

Clear-cut chances created for England at Euro 2016:
    2 - Henderson

3 clear cut chances. 2 from a player who barely played. Farcical

Funny how everyone wanted these 3 out of the team. In a 4-3-3 formation Hodgson's midfield basically consisted of a striker, a defender, and one inexperienced midfielder.

This is what is most likely going to happen. However he wouldn't tell the press what he was going to do. I might nominate Vermaelen for defender of the tournament so far though 😉

            • 12 Years

But that Spurs CB pair just could work wonders and with actual laterals on both sides you could find new dimensions of your team. That could be a blessing in disguise.

Also, what Lukaku and Meunier both playing would mean for fantasy football? 😀

Hmm not sure, big loss in defence though. Both started their carreers as wingers and are now backs, so lots of attacking potential. Both will want to go forward a lot but Wilmots will probably keep them at the back as much as possible 😀

Not sure if there will be any difference for fantasy potential of other Belgium players...

I think, firstly, there will be, because particularly Hazard would thrive if he got more support on his flank, but moreover, I'm thinking of having both Lukaku and Meunier in my team, that's the fantasy potential I was thinking of.

Well Meunier for sure, Lukaku hmm. It's still not sure this is how we will play 😀 Maybe he'll play Denayer instead of Vermaelen.

Yeah, that's the risk. Just thinking, IF both Lukaku and Meunier would play, I'd want to have them in my team. Dirt cheap, very attacking laterals, in a dominant team with big forwards. What's not to like?

Well I guess you have more confidence in our defence than I do 😀

But indeed, both have a lot of attacking potential. However, you could see in the first game that Meunier went forward a lot and Vertonghen stayed behind, while they switched roles in the second game. Almost seems like Wilmots chooses 1 of the 2 backs to go forward... 😀

Definitely a good pick. Not sure why people are so persistent on an English coach, you guys could definitely pick up a top 4 CL/WC/EU proven manager. Most of these English managers just fail to adapt their tactics & adhere to old systems.

Holy shiet, hadn't realized 😯 Yeah mate, either what Parisse said or a proven foreign manager. A whole new system is in dire need right now.

I think they should be looking for young managers, they are the ones that are getting the results.

Give Becks or Lamps a 20 year contract and be done with the notion that an actual really good manager will choose the England national team over a juicy Premier League contract.

I am little late to the party, but WELL DONE, HEROES! CMON ICELAND!

I have feeling that I support them more than I would support Serbia! Just hope they won't be robbed against France.

I guess we shouldn't be so surprised that a team full of players who spent the last year bottling it against Leicester bottled it against the international version of Leicester.

As an Italy fan (half English too) at the start of this day I was convinced Italy were going out and England were through.

I know nothing. God knows how I won my FPL mini league
