England and Iceland go head-to-head at 8pm as the Euro 2016 Round of 16 comes to an end.

Both sides were runners-up in their respective groups on the back of a win and two draws apiece, though there’s no question that the underlying stats are in favour of the Three Lions.

Given that Iceland have averaged just 28.3% possession so far, it’s fair to say that their opponents will be expected to dominate proceedings as the Scandinavians sit deep. As we saw against Slovakia, though, Roy Hodson’s side have toiled to break down obstinate opponents – they registered 29 unsuccessful attempts in their goalless draw against Slovakia.

England produced almost three times the number of attempts on goal (64 to 23) than their opponents over the group stages, though despite a wealth of options in the final third, currently lack a cutting edge and have scored just three times so far.

Iceland have found the net on more occasions (four) but given they’ve managed just nine shots on target, it remains to be seen if they can maintain a lofty 17.4% goal conversion rate – the highest in the tournament.

At the back, England again have reason for optimism. Hodgson’s men allowed a single big chance against in the group stages – less than any other side – and conceded just 11 efforts inside the box.

Iceland, on the other hand, have afforded the opposition 25 efforts in the penalty area, which bodes well for the Three Lions’ chances of grabbing the win that would see them square up to tournament favourites France in the quarter-final stage next time out.

    Those looking for an enabler, Renato Sanches can be a massive buy at only 4.4. Against Croatia, he was splendid creating a lot of chances and was MOTM as well. Again, we have seen the drought going on in the EURO for the mids and fwds. So a 4.4 cheapie who plays up the front and in easier side of the draw isn't the worst player to get. Cheers

    Neuer or Lloris?

    Was thinking Neuer because Italy's attack shouldn't be able to break down the German defense. But they broke Spain's, so...

    Lloris I'm hesitant on purely because the French defense is so woeful.

          I'm bullish on Portugal. Poland looked ridiculously bad against Switzerland and are lucky to have emerged. Lots of value in Portugal's defense I think. Rui, Guerriero, and one of either Fonte or Cedric seems a good bet for value on WC I think.

    No WC, ended up with this;

    ------------------Hennessey-------------------
    Jedrzejczyk Guerriero Chester Meunier
    ---Blaszczykowski DeBruyne Ramsey---
    ------------Ronaldo Bale Lukaku------------
    -----------------------------------------------------
    -------Lloris Payet Draxler Giacherrini-----

    Ideal world I'd have swapped Chester, Ramsey, Bale > Mangala, Hazard, Gomez but can't so I'm stuck with that. What do you think lads? Decent enough?

            🙂 Thanks Walsh. Could of gone that route but quite liked the idea of being guaranteed either 2 Poles or 2 Portugese in the semis. It's the Belgium, Wales game that worries me, guaranteed 3, maybe 4 from that game to progress but it seems they will be cutting each others throats. Good luck for the rest of the tourney mate.

              Makes sense, but I'm backing Portugal heavily as the horse to go through. 6 transfers is a lot for next stage so should be able to repair things relatively easily. Good luck to you too.

      I like it, but triple German attack against that defense seems ridiculously bad to me. I'd go with one at most and probably would be Gomez. Ozil is dead to me, and Drax seems like good value but I can't see Germany scoring more than one. I'd rather take some punts. Double Poland defense I don't like either - I like Portugal to win that game.

        I think Poland v Portugal will be a very boring game to watch as Portugal drag Poland down to few opportunities. Just like they did to Croatia

          Portugal were on two days rest against Croatia. I think they could do quite a bit better and I have a good feeling about them. I think Poland were without any such excuse and looked completely dire against a pretty toothless Swiss side.

        For some reason I can't see too many goals being scored in these games but I think Germany will do well against Italy, they might get 2. I would have punted on an Italy midfielder but I can't see any decent one to get. Poland look solid and Portugal have been pretty poor throughout the tournament with only a few players having a good tournament so far. Without Ronaldo they're pretty average I think. Can see the Poland - Portugal game being a 0-0 tbh.

          I'm into De Rossi for the out there pen shout and his price. Could see him doing something in such a big moment for some reason, though it is a wild punt. He's cheap though. I don't agree that Germany can get two - I think best case for them is a 1-0 win. I hear you on Portugal but still have a feeling they will put out a good performance against Poland. I'm not seeing a 0-0 there. 2-0 Portugal for me.

            I backed myself to have some differentials so yeah I might go for De Rossi and see if he can nick a goal or a cheeky assist. Think I might play it a bit safe in case Poland don't manage the clean sheet and go with just 1 Poland def also. Any other decent differentials you'd recommend mate?

            1. Walsh
              • 12 Years
              10 years, 22 days ago

              Fine with that on defense. Spreading the risk is safer surely if you don't see it one way other the other too strongly. I think a Portugal mid could be a cheeky differential depending on their lineup which we will get before the deadline. I love Coman - with Kante suspended I expect him to come in. I prefer him a lot more than Draxler, for example. Still like Nani for his price and he's quite the differential. Slim pickings though - differentials are hard to come by with such a small pool of players to choose from.

      I wouldn't remove Bale if you don't have wc available. Bad on paper matchup for him but he's still capable of points regardless of opposition. I'd focus on players you have you aren't playing. Taking a -4 is worse than holding a blanker for me, too.

          I like that. I don't mind keeping Muller....same thoughts like with Bale. Can score against anyone even though he is playing the toughest defense left in the tournament. I'd have a backup though in case Renato doesn't feature which I don't really think he will do.

    Hennessey / Hart

    Dier / Rami / Jedrezjcek / Chester / Meunier

      Too much in GK - Patricio or Flappy should be in along with one of them 6.0s. Don't like double Germany attack. Triple Belg attack is very intense - I think Ron is a great pick for huge standout captaincy option on the first day. Or at least get Nani for a shout. Defense looks great though. Not sure about Kos...

            It is a bit different this week. We get 4 chances at captaincy one in every match. I think we will be wanting to have another go at it unless we get a pretty high score out of our first option. 2 goals min in the first match imo

              A double return from anyone is auto stick. Ron getting 9+ perfectly reasonable to me given how poor Poland looked. He's straight in my team.

        I think it's unlikely Portugal and therefore Ronaldo will score more than 1 given the way they play so not really sure he is worth the price. Nani I considered though, alongside Eder and Gomez for the last attack spot. Thought the latter looked like the best option because I have three other strong captaincy options - KDB, Payet and Giacchierini if the first two fail.

        I actually had Rui Patricio and Sagna over Lloris and Guerreiro, but really needed the extra cash.

        Not many good mid picks imo - the only other one I really considered was Blaszczykowski, might squeeze him in for Kroos somehow.

        Pod up soon? Great job, by the way, listening to you guys since beginning. 🙂

          I'd back Nani against that defense over Gomez or Eder for sure. Again, I'm big on Portugal going through so I'll be beating this dead horse all day long. But, I agree it's tough to find some cheeky differentials. Yep just recorded pod - should be up soon Alon is editing right now. Thanks for listening pal 🙂

    Current team

    Hennesey/DDG
    Rami Dier Hector Munier Jedrejzyc
    KDB Payet Perisic Alli Ramsey
    Muller Bale Luka

    Thinking of
    Dier-> Giacherreni
    Perisic-> Draxler
    Muller-> Nani
    Alli->Kuba

      Don't like Kuba. You'll be lacking a second playing goalkeeper too but not worth the -4.

        Thanks mate! I only have Rami not playing. But that means I will end up having KDB + Hazard + Kaku with only Payet as French attacking cover. Giroud or Griezmann would require a hit. Currently have Muller + Bale + Kaku.

    Rate my WC QF Draft:

    Rui Patricio/Hennessey
    Sagna/Giaccherini/Meunier/Pazdan/Pepe
    De Bruyne/Hazard/Payet/Ramsey/Draxler
    Ronaldo/Griezmann/Bodvarsson

      Get Henn out. Better value in Portugal defense than Pepe - wait to see team sheet. Guerriero or one of Fonte / Cedric should be in. Having Ramsey is mental. So too with that Iceland son. Rest looks tidy.

      1. Reiko
        • 10 Years

        Sadly, the matches are broadcasted early morning 3am so will not be up to view the team sheet. Hence, cannot take chances with any of the suggested defenders incase they end up not playing. Hence went with the only guaranteed starter.

        Ramsey is Wales cover in the scenario that Wales pull-off an upset victory and move to the next round. Plus Belgium defense might concede with Vermaelen suspended. Same logic for the Iceland player.

        6 free transfers next round might not be enough if I bank on few teams entirely and they end up losing.

      Probably not...but maybe. We won't have to worry since we will get the team. Just have a backup plan in place. If he's in the team he should be an auto WC pick though at that price for me.

            If u r not an ardent Wales supporter, can let go of Bale to free up funds. Ramsey as Wales cover should be sufficient. Upgrade Kroos to Hazard if possible.
