The Euro 2016 quarter-finals get up and running this evening as Poland take on Portugal in the Stade Velodrome for a place in the last four.

Portugal may be slight favourites for the 8pm encounter but it’s fair to say they’ve yet to hit their stride.

Indeed, Fernando Santos’ side have failed to win any of their first four matches in regular time – after a trio of Group F draws against Iceland, Austria and Hungary, they defeated Croatia in extra-time thanks to Ricardo Quaresma’s late strike.

Poland have also flattered to deceive and scored just three times in four fixtures. Unbeaten in the group stages thanks to narrow 1-0 wins over Northern Ireland and Ukraine and a goalless encounter with Germany, they required penalties to see off Switzerland when their clash finished 1-1 after extra time.

A delve into the data certainly favours the Portuguese. They’ve registered more or less double the number of efforts on target (23 to 12) as their opponents and have conceded far less shots in the box (20 to 33), suggesting they could be on course to clinch a place against Belgium or Wales in the semi-finals.

He'll almost certainly get his chance this season. Zaba is gone and Sagna isn't getting any younger. Deanyer has potential and should be a good match with Pep.

shaping up to be an interesting and annoying summer:
"It appears that United now also have a clear run at signing Pogba if they can agree a deal with Italian champions Juventus. Real Madrid, it is understood, have, along with Manchester City, stepped aside because of the fees being demanded for the 23-year-old midfielder.

Real were prepared to go as high as £60 million for Pogba but sources close to Juventus suggested yesterday that United had already offered £80 million for their former player.

It appears that United may even be prepared to go substantially higher to secure the France international, which would mean breaking the world transfer record set when Gareth Bale signed for Real for £86 million. Pogba himself is believed to be content to stay at Juventus but the club may feel United’s offer is too good to refuse."

Personally I've always found people assume his best performances are his standard performances.

He's a very talented guy, obviously, but I've seen him have a lot of poor matches at club and national level.

Fair dos, Somalion. His matches in the group stage weren't his best, yet his impact cannot be undervalued as a whole. As deep-lying cog in the trio in midfield or chief creator, guy was essential in nearly every aspect of their matches. Especially vs Switzerland, he was sublime & unlucky not to score. I will say the flak he received for the Albania is deserved though.

Lad's only 23 years old, & has all the potential to surpass Vieria as the best complete midfielder of our generation (Vieira has gone on to say as much). His skillset is practically unmatched right now, the sheer physicality, aerial ability, shooting prowess, link-up play, deep-lying midfield play, the guy can dominate the midfield.

Ridiculous amount of monies being quoted for Pogba.

Only two players have ever been worth that kind of money....Messi and Ronaldo...

Not worth it just in terms of football for those two but worth it in terms of football AND commercial ventures. I highly doubt Pogba would have the commercial pull of those two.

        Dunno.

Their was a Real Madrid suit person on TV a few years ago (I think it was "hardtalk" on BBC2) who said that Ronaldo's financial earnings for Real Madrid would be 260 million pounds by the time he left.

In that context 80 million was cheap and UTD were ripped off.

United were ripped off, but you can't just look at it as 80 v 260.

That's why I wrote "in that context". Purely as a business venture Ronaldo and Messi are the only players that can justify that sort of money. Anybody else being bought for silly money is just a bit mad...bonkers anyway...

              In hindsight? lol

I would bet 7 years ago you said Ronaldo wasn't worth 80m.

Yes I did actually. And then I watched the finance bloke from Real Madrid and realised that Ronaldo and Messi aren't the same as everybody else in terms of value to their clubs. You can buy quite a few more great players with another 260 mill...

So your argument is that, at the time, when you and all the world didn't believe he was worth that much, you heard the buying club justify the world record price and so all is dandy?

                  Hmmm

And again...this is all in hindsight..no one could have reasonably and accurately guessed these two would reach these heights at the time as hype is a common-place thing but realization is not.

The finance chap from Madrid knew exactly what they were getting. Clothes horse, endorsements, advertising...all that sort of kak..

And actually we could probably add Beckham to that list when he went for daft wages to America.

        Yeah. Seems so.

I was chatting to my son about Bastien Schweinstieger the other night when he came on for Germany. He looked like some overweight has been playing in a charity match compared to the rest of the team. He's been a great player but it shows how far United have slipped in terms of signings.

I know Man U supporters who don't know where Manchester is. They have heard of Munich and some think they come from there. ANC harp on about the struggle and are busy wasting money to the point of killing the country.

We don't have CL this season, so it goes without saying that most top players we target will need more convincing AND the clubs will charge more.
