Antonio Conte made his first move into the summer transfer market as new Chelsea manager last weekend with the acquisition of striker Michy Batshuayi from French side Marseille.

The 22-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge for a reported £33m and has penned a five-year contract with the Blues, linking up with Belgian team-mates Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Batshuayi explained how both his compatriots helped convince him to move to west London, and spoke of his desire to help lead the club to further honours:

“I am delighted to sign for one of the biggest clubs in Europe and embark on the next chapter in my career. I hope I can help Chelsea win many trophies during my time at Stamford Bridge. Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois have told me many good things about the club, and with Antonio Conte coming in it’s an exciting time to become a Chelsea player. This is a fantastic opportunity for myself and my family, I am looking forward to playing in the Premier League next season.”

The History

Born in Brussels, Batshuayi played youth football for a number of different clubs in Belgium, including Anderlecht, before joining Standard Liege at the age of 15.

He made his senior debut for the club as a late substitute in a 4-1 defeat to Gent in February 2011, and scored his first goal in a Europa League tie against FC Copenhagen ten months later. Batshuayi ended the 2011/12 campaign with six goals from 23 league appearances and improved on that record the following season, producing 11 goals and five assists in 32 league matches.

In 2013/14, Batshuayi established himself as one of the most sought-after strikers in Belgium, ending the campaign with 21 goals and five assists from 38 appearances. In the summer of 2014, Marseille swooped to sign the striker for £4.5 million, and he enjoyed a reasonable first season in the south of France, primarily coming off the bench, scoring nine goals in 26 league appearances.

Last season, though, Batshuayi’s performances moved on to the next level, as he ended the campaign with 17 goals and nine assists in a team which only finished nine points above the Ligue 1 drop zone.

Batshuayi represented his country 13 times at Under 21 level, scoring seven goals and registering one assist, before making his senior debut against Cyprus in March 2015, where he found the net as a late substitute in a 5-0 win. He has made seven appearances for his country up to this point, scoring three times, including a goal in the 4-0 win over Hungary in Euro 2016.

The Prospects

Having fought off competition from a number of different clubs, including Tottenham, West Ham and Crystal Palace, to win the race for Batshuayi’s signature, and having invested so heavily in the 22-year-old, it’s expected he’ll be a regular starter for the Blues.

The big unknown at Stamford Bridge is what system new manager Conte will look to deploy, having favoured a three-man defence for the majority of his spells in charge of Juventus and Italy. Conte has also used a 4-4-2 formation, though, so there’s every chance he could start with both Batshuayi and Diego Costa in attack as the Blues move away from a 4-2-3-1 setup.

Certainly, the two should compliment each other well, with the Belgian’s combination of power and pace, and his ability to stretch defences, a nice contrast to Costa’s more rounded game, with the Spain international adept at holding the ball up and bringing his team-mates into play.

There is a chance that Costa could depart this summer, but such a scenario would merely enhance Batshuayi’s Fantasy prospects. It could also, potentially, see Hazard shifted into a central role if Conte decides that he’s not suited to a wing-back berth, though at the moment, it’s too early to tell and we’ll be keeping a keen eye on the Italian’s tactics once pre-season gets underway.

Looking at Costa and Batshauyi’s numbers from last season, the latter averaged a shot every 24.1 minutes, compared to every 36.7 minutes for Costa. Given leading marksmen Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane fired an effort every 20.5 and 22.1 minutes respectively in 2015/16, the statistics look very encouraging in regard to the prospects for Chelsea’s new front man.

Given that the Blues are expected to improve considerably under Conte after last season’s disastrous tenth-placed finish, and with Batshuayi likely to play a significant role in that transformation, the Belgian international looks likely to be priced in the low, premium price bracket in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), perhaps at around 9.5 to 10.5.

Chelsea Fantasy assets could be in high demand as we formulate our 15-man squads given their pretty favourable start (WHM, wat, BUR, swa) to the campaign. While hopes are high for both Hazard and members of the Blues’ rearguard to return to form this season, Batshuayi looks to have the ability to make an immediate impact in the Premier League.

The Belgian was involved in 54% of Marseille’s goals last year, and while he still needs to work on his link up play, that tally of nine assists in the French top-flight indicates he already has a good appreciation for where to find his team-mates.

The added appeal of owning any Chelsea player this season is the fact they’ll have no European football to distract them from domestic matters, while rotation should be far less of a concern. Should Batshuayi show signs during pre-season that he looks ready to make the step up from Ligue 1 to the Premier League immediately, expect the forward to have plenty of suitors as we begin the 2016/17 campaign.

    Martial's price 57 million - Price = 8.0m
    Michy's price 40 million - Price = 7.5m? 😉

I am in a ML with a big price at stake. Second atm with nine points up to first. Will still win a decent price if I end up second but first will mean to double the amount. I am four points ahead of third which will half my price and so on until fifth.

What would you do and which team would you put out?

Got 6 portugese (4 defenders ( Patricio, Cedric, Fonte, Guerreiro) , Sanches and Ronaldo) and 4 french ( Lloris, Sagna, Payet, Griezmann) before I do any transfers.

Your thoughts are very much appreciated.

Sorry. Posted this mistakenly as an original comment.

I think you need to play safe cos you also need to protect your present position.
Bring in another FRA def, 2 FRA mids and 1 FRA striker.
      I will go with:
      ---------------------------------- Lloris -----------------------------------
      -----------Sagna-------------Guerreiro----------------FRA-----------
      --------Payet -------Sanches-------POGBA---------MATUIDI----
      ----------Ronaldo----------Griezmann-----------GIROUD---------

Main Assumption: No matter the final scoreline, France will score at least one.

Thanks. I am thinking along the same lines.

It will be hard to gain those nine points, has to be a original captaincy choice or lots of defenders from a team which keep a CS. A risk on a sub who gets a goal or assist could also do the trick, but I am not sure its worth risking..

Have their been any Three way defensive guides emerging yet? The ticker is good for searching for rotating pair candidates but what about Three way? Personally i like to have Two premium defenders that play each week, with the other Three rotating. Any decent suggestions for combinations?

          There is no rotation button.

Look at the ticker, look for fixture runs where with two teams you get at least one blue fixture every week.

Members can drag the teams into any order. So for instance drag Leceister and Hull together. Is there a good run over half the season?

Same can be done with three teams.

I've seen hundreds of horror movies and I think the best one in last few years is probably the orphan. Few years old but a great film that most people love.

I think you need to play safe cos you also need to protect your present position.
Bring in another FRA def, 2 FRA mids and 1 FRA striker.
    I will go with:
    ---------------------------------- Lloris -----------------------------------
    -----------Sagna-------------Guerreiro----------------FRA-----------
    --------Payet -------Sanches-------POGBA---------MATUIDI----
    ----------Ronaldo----------Griezmann-----------GIROUD---------

Main Assumption: No matter the final scoreline, France will score at least one.

All depends if you have good internet speed, if your internet is good your streaming is good. If one link isn't great you can get it on another etc. Get PPV as well, got mine already loaded off ebay. Films are worth waiting a few weeks so the quality is better. Angry Birds for example now is decent but something like Warcraft would be better in a couple of weeks

Doesn't have to be super duper fast but not talking dial up around 8 and your your fine. PPV is pay per view. Watched the Anthony Joshua fight a few weeks ago for example. Well worth investing in ive now had sky sports switched off we was paying £150 a month!!!! Can pick a pre loaded stick up cheap now mine was £55 at the time they automatically update as well

modbro is just an alternative to use to Kodi. Think like the official fpl app and a different version that does the same thing. The beast is basically all your movies. Jarvis is the latest update that's all, I have the version before Jarvis but it makes no difference it's like same car but one is 6 months newer

And what i mean is it has been evident for some years now as good Giroud is he is not a striker to fire anyone to a league title.. Arsenal fans want a signing of real intent in that position in particular.. spend big.. overpay whatever it takes.. bringing back a 33 year old forward that walked out on them a few years back would be a disaster

just a year after saying this:

"The bottom line is that I want to win trophies with Arsenal, not with anybody else. I know you can win trophies in many countries and in many ways, but I want to do that in our way and in an Arsenal shirt.

‘I’m sure I could win things at another team in another country, but would it feel like our trophy, my trophy? I’m not sure it would. Anything we win here will come from the heart and that’s what I want. It’s my dream and I see no point in speaking about other teams when I have these dreams. I think other people know that about me; I’m just hungry to win with Arsenal and that’s it."

Not convinced. Valdes was the weakest part of Pep's Barca team for many years, and he was never replaced.

Hart may not be a top 5 keeper, but he's not Almunia, Mignolet level.

      1. KingNidge
        • 10 Years

Like i said below it was more Valdes ability to distribute the ball and knock it out from the back that made him irreplaceable imo.. they could get away with him being average in other areas as they always had the ball anyway lol

        1. Wilshere Knowledge
          • 12 Years

I'd say it's more likely that Hart will just be made to play that way.

Puyol wasn't great on the ball when Pep started either. 😉

And they have so many other issue areas, full backs, centre back, pivot, that need prioritising.

Ah yeah i'm sure he will be told to adapt for sure will just be a question of whether he can and to the satisfaction of Pep.. fair to say his standards are pretty high 🙂

I dont know if I agree at all.

Man City have what I think now is a real old looking squad which showed a lack of depth last season and needs a fair bot of surgery.

A few of their players for me are done. Yaya for example, Kompany is permanently injured.

Aguero, KDB, Silva (not as he was, but still great), Gundogan. That's a great spine of a team.

Plenty of good players as well to supplement it. Will be in the title race for sure, imo.

After that what do they have though?

Not a lot to be honest. They need a few more players.

Silva looks past his best, Gundogan was cheap because he has struggled a lot with injuries.

As a team they lack leaders and strong defence with their current squad.

Gundogan being injury prone is more myth than fact. He had one really long term injury, but other than that he hasn't missed that many games.

                      Other players:

Sterling: was a fantastic supplementary player for Pool in 13/14. Needs coaching, but has talent.
                      Nolito: Brilliant player.
                      Kelechi: Brilliant young player.
Yaya: Brilliant in possession. Good enough for lesser teams.
Ota: Bad season, but was brilliant in Spain.
Nasri: Not great form under Pelle, but was brilliant.
                      Fernandinho is good.
Sagna and Clichy are good defensively.

It's hardly awful, certainly no more so than other teams.

Nasri was world class at Arsenal.

Was good under a defensive Mancini, and poor under Grini. His talent is worth noting, imo, when City have the best coach in football at the helm.

I'm with you on this.. when you consider the spine of their title winning sides Hart Kompany Yaya Silva Kun.. Hart on his game is as good as any but prone to very dodgy periods of form.. Kompany like you say just can't be relied upon to be fit long enough to be the influence he was.. Yaya is trotting around like he's dosed up on vallium and Silva's legs starting to creak imo could struggle in Peps high intensity game.. Kun is incredible but do they have a top drawer alternative when he's on the sidelines.. no... don't get me started on Sterling Navas and Delph.. seems there was no structure in place to replace some of these guys as they got on and needed to be phased out

Pep likes a keeper super comfortable on the ball.. think Valdes at Barca or Neuer at Bayern... the play starts from the keeper in his teams so i would say for certain he will be thinking long and hard about that right now

Makes a lot of sense to buy Koulibaly if we are going to play a back 3. A LCB is desperately required. 🙂

I don't know why people think Conte will play a back 3.

You don't have the centre backs for it, and you'd need to play your best player out of position. :/

Conte likes to mix up his formations. Not saying we play a back 3 every match but it's nice to have an option and Koulibaly is a good option if we play a back 4. If we play a back 4, we still need a new CB

Sure, would be a great signing.

I've just seen a lot of 'Conte 3 at the back' stuff, when it wouldn't make any sense to do so, with people planning potential Chelsea FPL options based upon this assumption.

No, we don't. Zouma and JT are a perfect 1st choice pair. Cahill and Christensen are perfectly adequate backup.

Going to a back-3 would require radical surgery. Can you play Azpi as a WB? What about Ivan, how does he fit in a 3-5-2? Where is the LCB for a back-3? Can JT play the Barzagli role in the centre of a 3?

Christensen is going back to B.Mon and we don't know how Zouma recovers from injury. We can't be 100% confident of Terry's fitness as well.

Azpi playing the role Darmian played for Italy?

Ivan does not fit , so what? Just keep him one more year as reserve CB.

Koulibaly is the potential LCB and yes , I do think Terry can play as the central CB

Christensen doesn't return to Borussia if Chelsea don't want him to.

Darmian played that role badly for Italy. In a 3-5-2 the RWB would be Cuadrado. There's no spot for Azpi.

I think JT could play that central role as well as it happens. That's not my point. My point is that a lot of change and uncertainty would be involved. Whereas a shift to 4-4-2 would be an easier first step.

442 with Hazard and Fabregas won't work defensively at all. Maybe we do not play Fabregas but we need to play Hazard in every game.

I have been saying exactly this.

Conte has also used variations of 4-4-2 in the past. The common factor is 2 strikers. It is quite possible he won't immediately go to a 3-5-2.

Either are possible but it depends who Chelsea bring in.

So we can pretty much expect 2 up top?

I think so. Although one may be a fast player just behind the striker, possibly Hazard.

If Conte is going to play 2 up top then Batshuayi could be a lock if he's a lot cheaper than Hazard

              Certainly want a Chelsea attacker

I hope he is, he's been priced out of the game in Sky FF until we see him playing 90 minutes every game. Hazard's £11.2 whereas Michy's £11.5m, right up there with the other premium strikers.

Sure, but I'd say that Conte really looks to make the most of a squad.

Hazard is easily the best player, so I'd think he'd look to get the best from him. If I were a betting man, I'd probably go 433.

Fan of him. Better than most CB's in the league.

I know it's early but I played around with a potential Prem team (using the Goal Fantasy Football app). Any thoughts?

    De Gea
    Bellerin Kompany Ivanovic
    Ozil Hazard Coutinho Antonia Deulofeu
    Aguero Giroud

    Thank you!

Looks way over budget to me.

Other than that, Deulofeu is a risk, Antonio will likely play riight back, Kompany too injury prone, Ivan at risk after an awful season, and Coutinho is a bit rubbish in FPL.

      Sorry. 🙁

No it's ok. I appreciate the criticism. It's such an early draft. I'm playing with Goal Fantasy Football so it's well within budget. I'll have a shuffle around.

Anyone considering any L'pool attackers? No Europe so the players will be fresh every game despite the high energy pressing. Have a feeling Liverpool games will be goalfests this season similar to 13-14. Who to go for though? Mane? Cout? Sturr?

I can envisage scorelines of 3-1, 3-2, 2-2 etc. Very few 1-0's or boredraws.

I plan on starting with a Liverpool attacker, I fancy them to beat Arsenal at the Emirates opening weekend.

      Only Firmino tbh.

Mane inconsistent, Coutinho not good for FPL, and I don't think Sturridge is nailed on.
