Euro 2016 comes to its conclusion this evening as France take on Portugal in Paris.

The hosts are firm favourites to triumph after seeing off Germany 2-0 in the semi-finals on Thursday evening. Didier Deschamps’ side have scored at least twice in five of their six matches over the tournament – indeed, a goalless draw against Switzerland in their final group fixture was the only occasion that Les Bleus have failed to chalk up a victory.

Portugal’s road to the final has been less convincing. Fernando Santos’ side didn’t win any of their first five fixtures in normal time before defeating Wales 2-0 over 90 minutes.

Delving into the data, the two nations boast very similar threats in the final third. In terms of minutes per attempt over the tournament, France just edge it by 5.3 to Portugal’s 5.5, whilst they also have the slimmest of leads for shots on target (36 to 34).

The home side have been far more clinical. Deschamps’ troops have netted 12.3% of their opportunities compared to their opponents’ 7.1%, which equates to 13 goals to eight.

At the back, the pair have served up three clean sheets apiece, with France’s defence slightly more resilient, having conceded four times to Portugal’s five. Given that they are also near-identical for shots inside the box conceded (33 to 31), though, tonight’s clash may not be quite as one-sided as many anticipate.

I didn't see much of the match tonight due to watching my son in a show. I did however see the pundits saying these Euro's have been poor.

What were they watching ?...i think they've been fab...

I don't think the quality was poor at all.

I do think an awful lot of pundits like to pretend football was "better in their day" as some sort of ego boost.

I think it's more that the best national teams aren't anywhere near as good as the best Champions League teams.

Portugal would struggle to make the QFs in the CL, even with Ronaldo.

Yeah, i think that's pretty much a given these days.

The alternative to all the drama of Euro16 is Coronation street and Emmerdale farm...maybe worth remembering that.

No, I have enjoyed it. Iceland especially. But that doesn't mean that I couldn't also see that the quality of football wasn't the greatest overall.

A lot of pretty dire games tbh but in the sense of the Irish teams heroics along with Iceland the Welsh getting to the semis and Portugal finally getting over the line i have thoroughly enjoyed them.. from a quality point of view much of it hasn't been great imo

          Indeed they were.

On the other hand (as i commented during a couple of their games) the Italian defence was fantastic, maybe the best i've ever seen. They moved together like synchronised swimmers...really good stuff. Sadly Shearer and co can't see the majesty in that part of football.

I've met both of them a few times when they played for Blackburn (i used to get good corporate treatment off Uncle Jack)...Shearer was a very funny young bloke...Sherwood not so much...

I could defintely see Shearer being a down-to-earth guy, comes off as much on MoTD. It's just his rigid mentality of studying the game that ircs me tbh. Sherwood has always come across as uptight & self-serious in all his press-cons & interviews.

Pretty cool you met Shearer though!

Had no idea, but apparently the Artemio Franchi Trophy is coming back next year which is between the winner & runner-up of the Euro & Copa America. But before that there's a one-off match between the winners of those tourneys taking place this year. Chile vs Portugal should be pretty good 😯

Yeap little harsh but even as united fan i dont think he justifies a world record transfer fee

he is class and potential to be one of the best under mou.

        1. Zasa

          10 years, 1 month ago

He was also played out of position, completely different system compared to Juve. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CnCQiInWYAA60Il.jpg:large

That fee may be a bit high, but considering the market, it's not surprising. I could go on as to why he's worth a very high fee & isn't overrated, but it's simple imo, potential. (not even mentioning physical traits, accolades, etc)

          1. Dr Dream
            • 13 Years
            10 years, 1 month ago

His problem is going to be "that fee"....By default the expectation will be that he will be a game changer of a player, either by skill or force of personality, in the mould of players like Messi, Ronaldo, Cantona, Maradonna, Suarez, Platini and co...

Like i said he's a good player but i just don't see him in that sort of category...

            1. Zasa
              • 12 Years
              10 years, 1 month ago

But he's been exactly that for Juve all these years! He's not a goalscorer like Suarez or an assist machine, but he will comfortably force himself in those positions to make an impact. Whether by sheer physicality, low-dribbling past his opponents or placing expertly chipped throughballs to the wing-backs so they can make a better play, etc. Pogba unlike many others his size, age or position has a combination of tools to counter his opponents. One very rarely seen.

Also, I posted a lengthier response below.

I have no problem bowing to your better knowledge of him than me. I have only seen him play a few times and every time has been like tonight...perhaps the games he has played in on English TV have skewed our view of him.

I really can't recall a game when he's made me sit up and take notice though....well not 100 mill quids worth of notice.

Yeah that 100mil is definitely a lot to live up to for sure. I understand that's a very high expectation for someone to perform at & he may not be worth that right now.

Well, these are just some of his most recent matches where he staked a claim as one of the top midfielders imo. For example at the Etihad in the group stages in November. With a spectacular performance, where he was instrumental in setting up both goals in a 2-1 victory. It was here where Pellegrini said, "I don't think it's fair to compare a young player who is just starting with Yaya Touré who has had a brilliant career, Pogba can improve, he has many margins and areas for improvement."

That's a fair point, & Pogba certainly has his faults. Yet, Yaya proved to be ill-fitted to lace Pogba's boot in the match-up, where Pogba ran circles around him for 180 minutes & proved his worth in the big games:
                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Baa4NMRloAA

Here he is absolutely dominating Man City's midfield in the home bout where Juve won 1-0. Again, another great display of äll his abilities: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5tjuiBl_Gk

Vs Bayern Munich in the 2-2 earlier this year, he also showed he can show up when t matters most & put on a great performance. What was impressive here was that he was played on the left flank in a 442, not his preference or ideal position: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhCo1mReoo8

I think many underestimate what he's capable of.

For a 100m I expect a versatile player or at least can orchestrate a play from any kind of position in that middle of the field.

I don't know if you've watched Juventus play, but he's been more than capable of doing that in multiple CL matches vs Man City & Bayern (where he played on the left flank). And of course Serie A.

He has his limits, in the early season last year when Marchisio & Khedira were injured, he struggled. Put too much pressure on himself & made silly errors. He was limited in what he could do & had little to room operate comfortably on his side of the pitch When he's had a good support system around him, or complimentary partnerships, that's when he shines. Has the freedom to go forward comfortably & a warrior to back-track on time.

It's similar to Pirlo in the sense that he was extremely vulnerable whenever he was played in a 4atb formation. Mainly because he was suspect in defense & if partnered with one defensive-mid it'd still be unreliable because he'd get pressured off the ball easily by a trequartista. Then if you lost the ball you're only covered by the two CB's & more than likely be put in 3v2 position in your third or handicapped on a counter by default.

We saw Pirlo at his best & as the goldenboy of the 'regista' renaissance when he was partnered with Seedorf & Gattuso in Milan, & Marchisio/Vidal/Pogba in Juve. All complimentary partnerships that could cover him & help him out in a diamond whenever he was under pressure. It was in both those instances & especially with Juve (Italy as well with De Rossi/March) where we saw what Pirlo at his best looked like.

Point being that he's very much capable of dominating his area of the pitch when put in a role that's suited for him

Been a giant in the Juventus midfield from 18 years of age 4 consecutive Serie A titles golden ball at the last WC and just 23 years of age.. worth 100 million? no but it's one hell of an investment potentially
