Euro 2016 comes to its conclusion this evening as France take on Portugal in Paris.

The hosts are firm favourites to triumph after seeing off Germany 2-0 in the semi-finals on Thursday evening. Didier Deschamps’ side have scored at least twice in five of their six matches over the tournament – indeed, a goalless draw against Switzerland in their final group fixture was the only occasion that Les Bleus have failed to chalk up a victory.

Portugal’s road to the final has been less convincing. Fernando Santos’ side didn’t win any of their first five fixtures in normal time before defeating Wales 2-0 over 90 minutes.

Delving into the data, the two nations boast very similar threats in the final third. In terms of minutes per attempt over the tournament, France just edge it by 5.3 to Portugal’s 5.5, whilst they also have the slimmest of leads for shots on target (36 to 34).

The home side have been far more clinical. Deschamps’ troops have netted 12.3% of their opportunities compared to their opponents’ 7.1%, which equates to 13 goals to eight.

At the back, the pair have served up three clean sheets apiece, with France’s defence slightly more resilient, having conceded four times to Portugal’s five. Given that they are also near-identical for shots inside the box conceded (33 to 31), though, tonight’s clash may not be quite as one-sided as many anticipate.

It's sad for such a gifted player but in days gone by he'd have limped off without a whimper. It's all about the image/player that is Ronaldo. You'd never have seen Sir Tom Finney act like the girls blouse that he is.

For how many times he's been close to glory with Portugal, to get a ligament injury in the final? Any person in the world would try to play through it. It has nothing to do with image.

Just to clarify things, I'm not anti-Ronaldo. It goes without saying that he's a fabulously gifted football player and I love to watch him..playing football. Hate all the prima doña preening that goes along with his talent.

He's still a person though. He's still someone that has worked for this his whole life..and to be forced off with the game drawn so early into the final is TOUGH. So I can't begrudge him an emotional response and being as fit as he is, I certainly can't begrudge him trying to shake it off.

The worst part about this injury is that it seems to have paralysed both teams after an energetic start. France too, has calmed down a lot, as if feeling sorry for Portugal.

Interesting point is that Portugal definitely tried to play through Ronaldo a lot. Maybe we'll see a different team dynamic that France wasn't prepared for. Let's not forget France also have not looked convincing all tournament.

I'm not sure if it will be or not all I know is Real have said they can't compete financially for him so have pulled out of any deal.

Statement of intent is exactly it. Advertisement too, of course. Pogba is a sensation despite being overrated imo. It draws attention to the club and can be used for big value sponsorships. That's something I believe is becoming more and more important in football, especially in the PL.

Shelford made his Test debut for the All Blacks later that year against France in a 19–7 victory in Toulouse, and then was a notable victim of the infamous "Battle of Nantes" in the second Test. Roughly 20 minutes into the match, he was caught at the bottom of a rather aggressive ruck, and an errant French boot found its way into Shelford's groin, somehow ripping his scrotum and leaving one testicle hanging free. He also lost four teeth in the process. Incredibly, after discovering the injury to his scrotum, he calmly asked the physio to stitch up the tear and returned to the field before a blow to his head left him concussed. He was substituted and watched the remainder of the game from the grandstand where he witnessed the All Blacks lose 16–3. To this day Shelford has no memory of the game.

If we're gathering the guys who continued while injured, Robert Jonquet played a full hour with double fracture of fibula in 1958 semi.final against Brazil.

But of course, that's because substitutes were not allowed, and he was completely useless for the rest of the match. The point why Ronaldo left the field is just that: he could stay on pitch maybe but he can't play effectively on this level with an injury. It's a EC fine, ffs, not a pub match.

I guess it's because there are here often a lot of people seriously mocking players who can't play while injured, or when exhausted from a recent match. They don't seem to realise that the players of course could play, but just not on the level needed. And that annoys me.

This is where my point on desire for the game regarding Ronaldo comes into play.

Sissoko looks great now. Looked utter rubbish for large parts of the season when Newcastle badly needed players to step up and help avoid relegation. Playing out of his skin because the prospect of being a Championship player scares him sh*tless. He's the type of player I can't stand.

I'd probably refuse Fabregas. Guy has a very dodgy attitude imo.

Hazard I just think isn't fully mature yet and needs players performing around him. Even if he's the star player, I don't think he handles it well if everyone else is complete rubbish. Maybe it's an expectations thing, I've seen post match situations where he's refused to talk to the press because he played so badly even when he appeared to have a good game.

I agree completely, would have Hazard at any team as well because of that. Sometimes I think it weighs too heavy on him though, have a feeling that's what happened a bit this season.

On the contrary, I think team performances don't affect Hazard as much. I am a Chelsea fan and honestly, I dreaded to see a game in our title run when Costa/Hazard weren't on field. Luckily enough for us, he kept healthy for most of the season.

A lot of times he was the only player picking up the 3 points for us, with the defence of course.

            1. Somalion
              • 16 Years

See, I disagree on this for a couple of reasons.

In the title run, Hazard was the big name often and relied upon, but most of the team weren't absolutely crap. So I don't think it weighed as heavy on him. Then you see this season when certain players looked as if they couldn't even kick a ball and everyone lumping their hopes on Hazard to save Chelsea's season which impacted him a lot in my view.

Honestly, I would want to see this season as an anomaly. The morale was absolutely low and Mourinho's rants weren't helping the team at all.

As for the title run, yes we played well, but the goals scoring was heavily relied on him or Costa. And Costa of course was out for a while in the second half of the season. Hazard stepped up when it mattered with those goals.

        Bonsoir

Like the whole tournament tbh. Low on quality. Low on thrills

        Want France to win because

        A) I've put some cash in it

        B) would be cool after the terrorism thing

He's a good player, I like him. Far better than Eliseu.

Feeling nervous now with Giroud (c)

Gignac is bound to replace him later on 🙄
