With four Premier League sides – Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Swansea and West Brom – all in action over the next few hours, we roll out a first re-cap of the summer fixtures to date this evening.

Listed below is a match by match breakdown of all the encounters so far, with details of goals, assists and line-ups.

We’ll be publishing a round-up of the latest results tomorrow, while all the pre-season scores, scout notes and form players are being captured and collated in our Pre-Season Section.

Carolina RailHawks 2 West Ham 2

The Hammers’ brief American tour ended in the early hours of this morning with no wins, a couple of goals and a 40-minute bad weather delay as their sights now turn to their UEFA Europa League third qualifying round first leg on July 28.

Skipper Winston Reid (who managed a goal at both ends of the pitch) was teed up for the Hammers’ first by Andy Carroll before the big Geordie put his side ahead thanks to a cross from new wide man Sofiane Feghouli.

Slaven Bilic rang the changes, with nine players swapped from the 46th minute onwards, and the lack of continuity, hot and humid conditions and the threat of further thunderstorms conspired to produce a second-half of little quality or incident – on the pitch, at least.

Although Sam Byram started both matches at right-back, it’s worth noting that Michail Antonio did not fly out for the US tour due to the recent birth of his child.

West Ham XI: Adrian (Spiegel 46), Byram (Makasi 63), Reid (Henry 63), Burke (Rice 63), Cresswell (Page 46), Obiang (Poyet 63), Noble, Feghouli (Quina 63), Samuelsen, Lanzini (Browne 63), Carroll (Martinez 46).

Seattle Sounders 3 West Ham 0

Slaven Bilic used no fewer than 21 players to start the club’s two-match tour of America on July 5, handing debuts to new signings Sofiane Feghouli and Havard Nordtveit, as well as youngsters Antonio Martinez and Domingos Quina.

Former Valencia star Feghouli caught the eye and quickly formed a partnership with another summer signing (from the same Spanish club), Toni Martinez, when the pair came on at half-time. The latter is expected to be eased into English football through the Hammers’ development squad.

In addition to the above-mentioned Antonio, Bilic is having to make do without star midfielder Dmitri Payet and defenders James Collins and Angelo Ogbonna as the trio rest up after their Euro 2016 campaigns. A fourth international, Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Darren Randolph, is likely to leave the club in search of regular first team football, whilst rumoured Sunderland target, Diafra Sakho, stayed behind in London due to a back problem.

West Ham XI: Adrian (Spiegel 46), Byram (Feghouli 46), Page, (Cresswell 46), Reid (Henry 46), Rice (Burke 46), Poyet (Nordtveit 46), Noble (Obiang 46), Browne (Quina 46), Samuelsen (Lanzini 46), Makasi, Carroll (Martinez 46).

Tranmere Rovers 0 Liverpool 1

A second-half strike from Danny Ings earned Liverpool victory in the first of a busy pre-season campaign which will also take in trips to America and Germany.

In a match that took place last Friday, Ings captained a completely changed second-half Liverpool line-up, firing home after good work from Academy player Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Coach Jurgen Klopp handed debuts to new signings Sadio Mane, Joel Matip and Loris Karius in the first period and had to delve deep into the club’s playing resources as a dozen internationals are yet to return to training following Euro 2016 duties.

Liverpool XI: First half: Karius; Flanagan, Matip, Lovren, Smith; Lucas, Brannagan, Ejaria; Kent, Mane, Firmino.

Liverpool XI: Second half: Bogdan, Randall, Ilori, Wisdom, Moreno; Stewart, Chirivella, Alexander-Arnold; Markovic, Woodburn, Ings.

York City 0 Middlesbrough 6

Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka was another to field 22 players as his newly-promoted side swept aside York City last Saturday.

Karanka was without new signings Victor Valdes, Bernardo Espinosa and Viktor Fischer and promotion winners Ben Gibson and Grant Leadbitter, but he will have been encouraged by the second-half performance of January capture Jordan Rhodes, who hit two goals in a lively showing.

David Nugent and Adam Reach supplied a goal and assist apiece, whilst wide man Albert Adomah also managed to get his name on the scoresheet.

Middlesbrough XI: First half: Mejias, Nsue, Baptiste, Morris, Husband (Friend 27), Pattisom, Forshaw, Adomah, De Sart, De Pena, Nugent.

Middlesbrough XI: Second half: Konstantopoulos, Halliday, Jackson, McGhee, Friend, Clayton, de Roon, Carayol, Downing, Reach, Rhodes.

Woking 1 Watford 1

New Watford boss Walter Mazzarro tried out a 3-5-2 formation for the Hornets’ first friendly of pre-season on Sunday, shifting to a flat back-four just after the hour mark.

Dutch winger Steven Berghuis opened the scoring midway through the first-half with a deflected strike (courtesy of an Ikechi Anya assist) as Mazzarro tinkered with both formation and personnel, giving new signings Abdoulaye Doucoure, Jerome Sinclair and Isaac Success debuts after the break.

One notable absentee was club captain Troy Deeney, who was left out as a precaution after sustaining a slight knock in training, while Almen Abdi wasn’t involved due to sickness.

Watford XI: Gomes (Arlauskis, HT); Nyom, Britos (Rowan, 85), Hoban (Success, 67); Amrabat (Holebas, 59), Capoue (Guedioura, HT), Suarez (Watson, HT), Berghuis (Doucoure, HT), Anya; Ighalo (Sinclair, HT), Vydra (Oulare, HT).

I remember after GW1 last season there was a bit of knee-jerk chatter about entering a team for GW2 onwards. I guess the idea being that you can start with all the decent looking GW1 players and catch a good few price rises without spending points on transfers. Anyone remember this? And more importantly anyone actually going to try it!?

Get points in GW1 and take hits for GW2 works better if you do ok in GW1.

No. You could make 8 transfers and it would only cost you 28 points. Surely you could get that many, and you'd still be better off.

Makes no sense. Taking a few hits to get the players who look likely after gw1 is obviously better than having no points after gw1

I guess changing up to 15 players could cost you 56 points max - if your team was really that bad.

If your transfers will cost more than your GW1 points, make a new team, if they don't, don't.

Nice one yep! I guess it depends how quickly players look like increasing in price as well. If nearly a whole squad of players look like shooting up in price I could see some point to it.

But agree there's no reason you couldn't start gw1 and take hits.

In fairness, 8 goals and 13 assists in Serie A last season ain't half bad for someone playing too deep...

          10 years, 4 days ago

Somalion - 12 assists in Serie A to be more specific. I have to admit it's a decent record, I was too harsh in my statement. He could possibly become the new Yaya, playing quite deep but still getting points.

            • 10 Years
            10 years, 4 days ago

However, he usually scored or assisted when Juve already hugely dominated the game and won 4-0, 4-1 etc. If we take 5 teams from top 6 (exclude Juve), so Sassuolo, Napoli, Inter, Fiorentina and Roma, Pogba's record is quite poor: 0 goals, 2 assists in 10 game. As I mentioned above, most of his involvement came against weak opposition which he will never face in the Premier League.

Pogba's output would be high if he played the same role he plays at Juve, but he wouldn't. He would be in the double pivot.

13 assists according to what I'm looking at. May vary depending on where you're looking. I actually would agree with you in the sense that he definitely wouldn't be my first port of call.

8 goals from 124 shots, including 1 penalty. That's an open play conversion rate of less than 6%.

And he created less chances per 90 than Cabaye and Iwobi for comparison, in a dominant team.

With the same chance created to assist ration as Pogba, Ozil would have finished last season with 36 assists. 😆

            • 16 Years

So what you're telling me here is that despite his deep lying role he managed to crack off 124 shots? Not too shabby 😉 And maybe the chances he created were of better quality, therefore requiring him to make fewer to still get a decent number of assists 😉

I've not said he'd be someone I'd really consider, but his returns weren't bad last season for a guy in centre mid.

Tbf, with anyone other than Giroud up front, Ozil probably would have 36 assists. 😆

It does make you question him as a player though. Can't control a midfield, doesn't create many chances, wasteful in both his passing and shooting, not many defensive actions. £100m for some youtube clips? No. thank. you. 😉

Wilshere 13/14 PL season (last time he got decent minutes 🙁 ) v Pogba 15/16

                  Chances created per 90- 3.02 v 1.61
                  Goals per 90- 0.27 v 0.24
                  Passes per 90- 110 v 50
                  Pass completion- 86% v 83%
                  Tackles per 90- 2.47 v 1.64
                  Successful take ons per 90- 4.12 v 3.04

But it's not a fair comparison, Wilshere is of course a god amongst men. 😉

In all honesty, I don't think I would be. I'm a United fan, should that make any difference, but even so, I don't think he'll be prolific fantasy wise - there will be better options. Mkhitaryan is the only United midfielder I'll consider currently, unless Martial, by some miracle, is classified as a midfielder.

In all honesty though, I don't think United will sign Pogba. He'll play another season at Juve before weighing up his options again. United want him, supposedly, but I don't think Pogba is fussed by the interest really.

I'm not too bothered about the move - Think there is too much hype. I do think there is a really good chance that we will get him if the bid is made. I'm unsure how much of an option Pogba will have if United put that much money on the table. I fear he could never justify the price tag. Top player, though.

Yeah, exactly. I don't think he could justify the price tag, unless he was a key contributor to United winning the title this season. Also, part of me doesn't want him out of principal. It feels very wrong selling him for 900k (or whatever it was) then buying him back for £100 mil. That's football though, I guess.

How much of an option Pogba would have? I don't understand. The player's agent has said he's happy at Juventus and doesn't want to leave. The club have said they don't want to sell. It's more like United have no option. If the bid is made it will be rejected by Juve.

    I need help.

About a week ago someone posted a link to an interesting article on budget allocation in the epl fantasy .

It even had a pasted sample team from last season to illustrate all its points.

Does anyone remember it? If you do pls repost the link.

I need all d help I can get this coming season. Thanks

Alexis Sanchez could miss the game vs Liverpool after suffering an injury. Giroud and Welbeck look sure to miss it.

Arsenal are also resigned to being without Özil and Koscielny against Liverpool.

Firmino - most consistent out of the three and most likely to be played up top when Sturridge inevitably picks up an injury.

How do we rate Andre Gray as an option then? Do we think he's another Austin or a Boselli? SWA,LIV,che,HUL are his first four. Considering that he's Burnley's go to man and also on some pens, I think he'll be in my team if priced at 5.5/6. I think he's the pick of the budget strikers. He comes out on top when compared to someone like a Rhodes (Boro don't score much, Karanka loves to rotate, plus Negredo lurking?), Wilson (7/7.5m might be too expensive, fixtures a a bit iffy too) or a Benteke (7.5m if he goes to Palace, Townsend likely to be priced cheaper and on set pieces)

Working on his numbers, as well as every other striker (considered as an option) in the league. Will hope to have it up during the weekend, should help you decide his worth/potential.

Havent looked into stats for fpl yet. I would like to get a 7/7.5 striker though to start because it can be hard to judge from stats and preseason. Also it would be an easy downgrade without a hit if in the frist 3 GWs an option becomes apparent

Ideally you'd want a budget striker though for optimal allocation of funds throughout the team. 🙂

Thats very true, but for the beginning of the season i look for a short term approach as GW1-3 can be very unpredictable. I usually dont expect goals from my 3rd striker. In the unlikely event that I dont need to use my WC in the beginning because my team fits great, then I use a transfer to get the clearest budget option. If I WC then I get the budget option as well.

The reason I would pick a 7 over a 5.5/6 even though I dont trust either to score is because I trust the 7 to score more than I trust the 5.5/6

Valid points. I usually use my wildcard at the point when my team needs it the most - whether early or late is not the issue

That's the point I'm stressing upon too. Can't see any decent 7.5 or below forwards this season. Gray seems the best to me. 🙂

Don't think Wilson will be as expensive as 7.0 after he was injured most of the season. It will be between Gray, Bacca, Wilson and Rondon for me.

Btw., won't there be any more quizzes? 🙁

Might be worth a shout at 6.5 even though I'm not a fan of their opening fixtures. Pulis strikers are a no-no for me as well! 🙂

I'll probably host some more again before the season starts, just decided to give them a break for the euros.

He could well be this season's Wilson but without the horrendous injury. However, imo Wilson is more likely to be! Like you said, depends on prices. He shares pens with Vokes, who may end up forming an Ings/Barnes type partnership, sharing alot of the points, but I doubt theyll be as prolific as the Ighalo /Deeney partnership.
People are overlooking Hernandez but atleast he is lone striker, nailed and completely on pens. But then if negredo does join Middlesborough, everything changes again!

If you needed confirmation Karius is number 1..will probably cost 5m for those who like keepers in that price range (I definitely don't 😛 )

“I spoke with the manager and we said that it didn’t make sense for me to go to the Olympics as I would miss the first two league games of the season"

“We agreed together I wouldn’t be going (to Rio). The priority is the club. It’s more important that I am available for the start of the season.”

    4.5 / 4.5
    Shaw - 5.0 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5/4.0
    Sanchez - Hazard - Alli - 5.5/6 - 4.5
    Aguero - Ibra - 6~

    Wonder if that'll work 🙂

Usually you have to end up choosing between 4/5 biggish players or a more balanced squad, but those 4 might be pushing it a bit.

Hmmm, doubt it. Ive got that coming in around 1.5- 2.5m over budget at a guess, unless we get fairly lucky (which is definitely possible, Haz may come in lower and Alli not too high for instance)

Couldn't work out how to get Ibra, Aguero, and two midfield heavy hitters. Don't know if that works. I'm going with:

      4.5 4.0
      6.0 5.5 5.0 5.0 (4.5)
      KDB 7.5 7.0 (4.5 4.5)
      Aguero Ibra 6.0

Needs to sell Ozil IMO. Magnificent player, but if he can't find the right striker, then he needs to change the way in which they play, Ozil doesn't allow that, team is built around him and he is not a match winner. Sanchez is inconsistent but he's a match winner. Giroud showed this summer that he can be useful with a goal scoring AM playing off him.

This is it, it gives you options, you can go 433, or 4231. For me keeping and getting the best out of Ramsey is key. I'd like something like this:

          -----------Kante
          ----Ramsey Xhaka/Wilshere/Cazorla
          Alexis----------------Reus
          -----------Giroud

I'm a big fan of Ozil btw, but we won't get anywhere playing with him and Giroud, Both are more creators than goalscorers.

I understand what you're saying, and I agree that Ozil and Giroud aren't ideal partners, but I do think we should looking to get the most out of our best players, rather than our worst.

I think we should just overpay to get the striker that we need. And there's been plenty of striker movement since RvP left.

A striker needn't even be a tier 1 player, just a player that runs in behind to create space in midfield, drag players for Sanchez, and be a target for our creative players.

Yep, there has been movement, struggling to see a viable option now though. I'd love us to gamble on Iheanacho, test Citys resolve. Also, wouldn't mind Alexis getting a go upfront with a wide player coming in.

Can't see Kelechi happening at all, and it's not like money is a problem for City.

We've tried Alexis a few times up front, and he looks so unnatural there. Don't think he's suited to playing with his back to goal.

I'd like to see Lacazette. Not tier 1, and we'd have to overpay, but I'm sure he would be interested, and he fits the profile I stated. Sanchez could act as the Fekir dynamic for Laca, and he could even play with Giroud.

At the very least, at least with the Vardy bid we know Wenger is trying to address the issue, so I'll try to remain positive. 😀

Personally, I'm not sold on Lacazette, not a great record in Euroupe or for France. He's 25 now, makes you wonder why he hasn't been picked off early like most french talent.

Thoughts on Xhaka? Looks a good player, but i'm not sure how he'll improve us, we were already pretty stacked in that area.

I think Xhaka is a fantastic signing, and one intended, like you said above, to get the best out of Ramsey.

Ramsey couldn't play with Coq because he needed to dictate play, which he can't do. Xhaka can do both offensive and defensive roles of the Coq-Caz partnership, releasing Ramsey to play as a b2b. With Ramsey offsetting some of the lost defensive work we lose by dropping Coq.

The Arteta-Ramsey pivot was very good, and Xhaka is an upgrade in every way.

Add in we needed to replace Arteta/Flamini, his age, the fact he was captain, length of contract, and the current market, I think it's value for money as well.

My thoughts aswell, however we all know Wenger loves Santi. My concern is we'll see Ramsey wide or maybe even on the move this summer.

Wenger loves Santi, because Santi is a fantastic player. I think Santi will be in the attacking 3. Cant see a Xhaka-Caz pivot working.
