Next up in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are champions Leicester City.

To get underway, we cast an eye over the Foxes team statistics and compare them to the rest of Premier League, before delving into the data to assess their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources as we look to gain insight on their prospects for the upcoming campaign.

After earning a mere 19 points in their first 29 matches of 2014/15, Leicester looked set for a return to the Championship before a stunning reversal of fortunes under Nigel Pearson, helped by a switch to 3-5-2, saw them win seven and draw one of their final nine fixtures to finish six points clear of the drop.

The arrival of Claudio Ranieri last summer transformed the King Power club and ushered in their first ever Premier League title. Reverting back to a four-man defence, the Italian’s counter-attacking approach, allied with the pace and trickery of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, tore top-flight backlines apart as Leicester lost just three matches all season and finished ten points clear of second-placed Arsenal.

  3. Boro's Defensive Strength

I've seen some sniping on my beloved Middlesbrough today, so I'd just like to jump to their defence.

Firstly, I know there is a jump between the Championship and the Premier League, I'm not naive. But our defensive stats under Karanka are really impressive nonetheless.

Last season, we conceded 31 goals in 46 games. That's pretty good, right? How about this - we conceded 8 (EIGHT) goals at home in 23 games. That's more or less one goal conceded every 3 homes games.

Valdes is an extremely competent and experienced goalkeeper and I believe that this plugs our weak link in our back 5, as Dimi was amazing at times, but was prone to the odd error here and there. De Roon is also a great signing, in terms of our defence. Opta Joe informs me that he made more tackles than any other midfielder in Serie A last season - so he is hardly likely to sit back and let the opposition create an easy chance.

As much as this has frustrated me at some times during Karanka's reign, we do set up defensively. We base our play on keeping it tight and not conceding the first goal and he has used two defensive midfielders and a solid, disciplined back 4 as the bedrock for our promotion. I get the feeling he would rather win 1-0 than 4-3, lets put it that way.

We're not going to win the league, or even finish in the top 4 (that's next season 😉 ) but as a part of a 2 or 3 way rotation, doesn't it sound like you want a 'Boro defender in there. If I've still not convinced you, fine. I'll keep the points to myself.

Rhodes is a strange one. I'm not even convinced Karanka wanted him in the first place, and he was in and out of the team at first. He did show some form in the last 10 games or so, though.

But if we were to sign Negredo ....

Best piece of advice I can give you, though, is that Karanka likes to rotate his forwards. Concentrate on our defence!

I certainly wasn't dissing Boro's defensive capabilities, and they've been at the forefront of my thinking for my 3-way rotation.

My fear is that they over-price Ayala. At 4.5M, I think he'd be nailed for me.

Thanks, fantastic analysis. I will really think about Boro at home as a good fixture for defence. I'm disappointed about the jordan rhodes assessment though, I thought he'd be a star but if he starts well he could still be gold. Maybe abel hernandez is my first choice cheap striker at the moment

To add some weight to the question marks over whether we will step up defensively, in cup competitions in the past two seasons we conceded only one goal in away games against Man City, Man Utd and Liverpool - with the latter two games both going to extra time.

Its not exactly thrilling to watch (it can be!) at times, but make no mistake Karanka knows how to drill a team - we are very, very well organised.

Boro were quality in defence last year although the one time I really did see them in detail was at home against Forest (my team) and we came back from one down to win, they still looked like a solid and well organised team. Depends on budgets but Ayala would be my pick if 4.5, if 5.0 I think there are better picks out there and would consider a different Boro defender instead.

Redmond was not Puel's signing tho, Hojbjerg, an extra CM to play in that diamond, is.

Not saying that Redmond will play, just saying that I wouldn't be surprised if Puel didn't play diamond. He has been tactically quite flexible and adaptive historically.

Most of your team is exact to my thinking. All except not sure about double soton in mid. I'm thinking if value wasn't an issue, Tadic is the better of the 2 right?
Anyway, would be very interested to see how you finally decide to set up

Yep. Tadic quite a bit more expensive.

I can do Redmond > Townsend.

Early days to be pinning any player down, but he's someone I had in my plans from the end of last season because of his growing importance to the team, and Mane's departure made me think more so.

However, the change of manager makes me doubt it a little.

I will still be debating and changing in the run-up

nah, it doesn't work like that....you need at least 1 premium def, also doubling up on Soton....with all the choices and very interesting signings and "moving targets" ....double up on saints???

Don't know how to structure a Sky team. I took some advice from a respected poster and he suggested to scrimp in defence.

Definitely changing the Saints double-up . I could do Redmond > Townsend

Even though I knew what you were getting at I still had to Google "alimentation" 🙂

It really depends where you go but you could get breakfast and dinner for £10-15 a day quite easily. I was in London recently and for breakfast on way to train station I just got a ham and egg sandwich from Tesco for £2.10!

Eating in restaurants etc is going to put the price up of course.

Under a tenner if you're snacking from supermarkets. If you're looking for food and a drink in a pub in the evening you're probably looking at £15 just for that. Take a good read for travelling, West Ham to Stamford Bridge is a good 50 minutes transit.

It's ok but I'm biased with my team. Defense and GK is excellent but that removes budget from the defence. Certainly swapping Deeney with Wilson would free up some budget. Downgrading 1 of maybe Azpi or Van Dijk could upgrade Snodgrass.

Maybe Imbula is better than Dier in attack but is also very good statistically.

Blind can take long shots and is one of the best readers of the game...also a good passer of the ball

I just want FPL to open so I can do my KDB-Kun-Ibra combo... 🙁

    4.5 (4.0) (Total: 8.5)
    6.0 5.5 5.0 5.0 (4.0) (Total: 25.5)
    11.0 7.5 7.0 (4.5, 4.5) (Total: 34.5)
    13.0 12.5 6.0 (Total: 31.5)

4-3-3 interesting, I doubt the KDB-Kun-Ibra combo will be 36.5m, so you may have the cash to upgrade the mids.

If it's any cheaper I'm picking up better midfielders in the midfield 3. Can see Ibra and KDB being 0.5 less each. Any less than that would be awesome.

No way as he got better supply. In a few games, Zlatan will be deprived of service as Utd park the bus. Spurs don't park the bus. Attacking, free-flowing football. Over the season, Spurs will create more chances for Kane than Utd will for Ibra.

36.5m is upper end for the KDB-Kun-Ibra combo IMO, so he may have the funds to upgrade one of them to a 8+.

Yup, as I kinda expected. Would probably spend the whole 1.0 on 7.5 unless there was a good 8.0 option to upgrade the 7.0 to.

plenty of tempting 8's at the start of last season, admitting few of them preformed.
