Roberto Firmino is at the double as Liverpool sweep aside Fleetwood Town. Wayne Routledge serves up two goals and an assist as Swansea opener their pre-season schedule with a win, though Palace and West Brom struggle for a cutting edge.

Fleetwood Town 0 Liverpool 5

A brace from Roberto Firmino sealed an easy Liverpool win in their second summer outing, but it was the contributions of two newcomers that caught the eye.

Serbian midfielder Marko Grujic, a £5.1m January buy from Red Star Belgrade, opened the scoring, earned a penalty and was a major physical presence during his 45-minute stint, while Academy star Ben Woodburn scored and provided two assists in a highly promising display as a half-time replacement for Sadio Mane on the left flank.

It wasn’t such a good evening for Danny Ings. The England international was the match-winner last time out, but he missed a penalty against Fleetwood and struggled to make his mark throughout, as did Lazar Markovic. The Serbian winger, back at Anfield after a season on loan at Fenerbahce, has been a peripheral figure in both pre-season matches to date.

Lucas Leiva, with his first competitive goal in six years, was the other scorer, with another Academy youngster, Ryan Kent, delivering two assists and left-back Alberto Moreno chipped in with one.

Centre-half Mamadou Sakho might have been cleared of all wrongdoing regarding a failed drug test, but the French international won’t be playing anytime soon as he has an Achilles injury. With Martin Skrtel now a Fenerbahce player, that leaves Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip as the Reds’ likely first-choice pairing at the heart of the defence.

Liverpool XI: First half: Karius, Flanagan, Lovren, Matip, Moreno, Grujic, Alexander-Arnold, Stewart, Markovic, Mane, Ings.

Liverpool XI: Second half: Bogdan, Randall, Ilori, Wisdom, Smith, Lucas, Brannagan, Ejaria, Kane, Woodburn, Firmino.

Philadelphia Union 0 Crystal Palace 0

Crystal Palace kicked off their preparations for the new season with a hard-fought draw against in-form Philadelphia.

Manager Alan Pardew gave every one of his outfield players a run-out, with debuts for James Tomkins and Andros Townsend, and the pair came the closest to scoring in an otherwise tight and tricky encounter.

While Pardew was particularly pleased with the impact Townsend made, an injury concern over Tomkins cast a slight shadow over proceedings.

“James [Tomkins] got stretched twice in his first two moments in the game and he’s just got a little strain so that was a bit of a disappointment, but I don’t think it’s going to keep him out for too long. Andros showed why he is going to be an important player for us. I thought he was the real highlight of the game for our team.”

Sullay Kaikai was another with injury issues, a calf strain forcing the midfielder off early in the second half, whilst Pardew also confirmed that midfielder James McArthur could miss the club’s first couple of summer friendlies:

“He’s got a little problem with his knee, so we’ll have to see how that is. He only aggravated it yesterday, so I don’t think he’s going to make the Cincinnati game (on Saturday), but fingers crossed for Vancouver (on Tuesday).”

Crystal Palace XI: Speroni, Ward (Croll 66), Kelly (Delaney 46), Dann (Tomkins 46), Fryers, Boateng, Mutch (Sako 66), Townsend (Lee 60), Puncheon (Wickham 46), Kaikai (Zaha 54), Ladapo (Campbell 60).

Charlotte Independence 0 Swansea City 4

Goals from Oliver McBurnie, Kenji Gorre and a Wayne Routledge brace gave Swansea a great start to their two-date American tour.

Assists came from Angel Rangel, Modou Barrow, Jack Cork and Routledge.

Swans manager Francesco Guidolin used all of his 21-man squad during the match, handing a debut to Ajax signing Mike van der Hoorn at centre-half.

The Swans travel to Richmond on Saturday, with Guidolin expected to give run-outs to goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel and last season’s top scorer Andre Ayew, who was given extra time off following international duties.

Ashley Williams, Neil Taylor, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lukasz Fabianski, Ki Sung-Yueng and Jefferson Montero will join up with the squad towards the end of the month after a busy summer of tournament football.

Striker Bafetimbi Gomis has not travelled to America as he seeks a move away from the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea XI: First-half: Nordfeldt; Naughton, Kingsley, Rodon, Fernandez, Britton, Cork, Gorre, Dyer, McBurnie, James.

Swansea XI: Second-half: Vickers; Rangel, Roberts, Amat, Van der Hoorn, Fer, Fulton, King, Routledge, McBurnie, Barrow.

West Brom1 Paris-Saint-Germain 2

A David Luiz own goal was all the Baggies had to show for a combative clash with French champions PSG.

The Brazilian defender turned a Sadio Berahino cross into his own net early in the first-half before goals from Adrian Rabiot and Lucas Moura turned things round for the Parisians.

Manager Tony Pulis chopped and changed throughout, experimenting with formations and personnel. West Brom started with a 4-4-2 and swapped to a 4-4-1-1 after the break, with 20 players getting pitch time and the team’s back four enjoying an average age of just 18 in the second-half.

The first-half side was closer to what Pulis would consider a standard starting XI, with new signing Matt Phillips stationed wide right, while midfielder James Morrison made a return from injury after the break.

The one worry for Pulis concerned Albion starlet Jonathan Leko, who took a knock and had to be subbed off after 43 minutes.

West Brom XI: First half: Foster; Dawson, Fitzwater, Olsson, Pocognoli; Phillips, Fletcher, Field, Leko (Roberts 43); Berahino, Rondon.

West Brom XI: Second-half: Myhill; Wilson, Fitzwater, Howkins, Field; Roberts, Morrison, Yacob, McManaman; Gardner; Lambert.

    Grant Leadbitter will miss the start of the season for Boro due to a hernia op. Overall it's a good thing as he is too slow for the league, however it more or less confirms the following;

    - George Friend will be captain
    - Ramirez (work permit pending) will be on all set pieces
    - £12m signing Marten De Roon will start (defensive midfield, tackle master)
    - We will have a new penalty taker (Negredo/Ramirez?)

Karanka loves to rotate his attackers.

Especially in a 46 game season. Might chill out a bit in the PL.

I can see that stopping a bit really - due to there being less games.

Also for me there was an element of nobody really stepping up. For example, the season before last Bamford over time proved himself as a number 9 and became a shoo-in (to the point he even played him half fit in the Play offs). Neither Nugent or Rhodes did enough to edge ahead of the other last season imo, and both deserved to be rotated.

He will be nailed. 7 goals in 15 games last season from January and provided the focal point for our attack in the second half of the season.

The caveat is that he still has to prove it in the Premier League, however he's now fully fit and has regained some lost confidence.

        4,2,3,1.

Karanka went to school with Pochettino, they are very close.

Two full back that bomb on and two holding mids that rarely do. Well organised.

As things stand it will be:

        Valdes
        N'Sue Ayala Gibson Friend
        De Roon Clayton
        Adomah Downing Fischer
        Rhodes

Barragan will replace N'Sue, Downing will rotate with Fischer with Ramirez in the hole and Negredo will replace Rhodes.

            Yes, with overlapping fullbacks.

Adomah could be one to watch. When he's on it he's very effective and should benefit from having better players around him.

He has been very streaky over the years hasn't he? His bad runs have tended to coincide with a lack of stability though - disagreements with the manager, links to QPR, etc.

We know when he's on it though he can be just as effective as a Matt Phillips, or dare I say, an Antonio who have both stepped up the level.

Oh yeah, he has great potential, but inconsistency and bad decisions can hinder him.

If he gets his game together, his pace and trickery will give many a full back a headache next season.

I won't be touching De Roon in FPL, he will be on that suspension tightrope sooner than Lee Clattermole can get both of his feet off the ground.

Rhodes took pens for Blackburn, didn't he? If he is in the XI of course.

          He's a beast?

A player that has really developed well under Karanka. Offers a good goal threat. The downside is he picks up niggles and bookings - however when fit he's very, very good.

so arsenal to drop out of top 4 for first time in 20 years, chelsea to completely turn around last season display with basically the same team +1 year each and watford to perform exactly the same with a different manager?

Unless I'm mistaken, you predicted us to do badly last season and look how that turned out. I think we'll drop a bit - inevitable with Europa group commitments - but 15th is a joke - 12th-9th seems probable. 8th-7th-6th have been our last three finishes and the year we transitioned from 8th to 7th, we had MUCH more upheaval than this season.

true, there's reasons to like Southampton still... they've transitioned unbelievably well between teams over the last 3 years - and i mean unbelievably. I feel like lack of continuity could catch up with them. Could be wrong but thats what i feel.

        1. Lucy.
          • 12 Years

You'd think the longer we keep recovering/transitioning, the more likely we are to keep doing it... It would appear to point to good broader structures, including recruitment and scouting, which aren't hurt by changes to manager/players.

don't mean to offend you.. theres some really good players there
but i think the PL is getting more and more unforgiving on even the slightest lack of organization or funcitonality

We demonstrate the highest levels of organisation though, at a level beyond just the pitch. It's important to note that the backline will be untouched for the first time in years.

If arsenal can pull off, higuain, then we will win it. I hve no qualms about that, but as it stands, its city to win for me. Pep, company (if healthy) and a fit aguero is good enough to win the league for me

Ah ok, I think that's more important than what he does in preseason. Conte always plays direct football, but who benefits from that the most Fabregas, Hazard or Costa

            1. Cpt Crunch Scott talent
              • 12 Years
              10 years, 3 days ago

Aye, that is one of the things I will be looking for in pre season. I mean, we all know Conte's work and merits but it aint worth a damn right now as it is a new league, new opposition and a new toughness(in the league) with no winter break, more cup games etc etc.
I'd like to see just how Hazard will be utilized and also how the rest of the team will play. Also expect a few transfers.
Jut I want to have Hazard, no doubt. Looked real good in the Euros and he is a 200+ points kind of guy.
Have my eye on Zlatan, KdB and Haz as my big names for fpl, prices allowing it of course.
