Moving Target

Having already brought in Andros Townsend and Steve Mandanda, Crystal Palace made their third new addition of the transfer window last week by signing West Ham defender James Tomkins for £10 million.

The defender has joined on a five-year deal, and speaking to the club’s official website, spoke of his happiness at linking up with former Hammers boss Alan Pardew, while also outlining his ambitions for the forthcoming season:

“He helped me through by getting me training with the first-team when I was a kid and got my career started which I’ve always been thankful for, so it’s nice to be reunited with him. He’s been interested in signing me previously so it was an easy decision when I heard Palace were interested… Given how ambitious the owners and the chairman are and with a few numbers coming in, the top half is a good goal to look at… There’s a nice feeling around the place and it feels like we’re going places here.”

The History

Spotted by West Ham scouts playing for his local Sunday league side, Tomkins joined the club’s academy when he was just eight-years-old. Initially a striker, Tomkins moved into central defence, and made his Premier League in a 1-1 draw against Everton in March 2008.

The following season, Tomkins was sent out on loan to Derby Country by then-Irons boss Gianfranco Zola, playing eight matches in all competitions for the Rams before being recalled. He would go on to make 12 Premier League appearances in 2008/09, and was subsequently handed a long-term contract at Upton Park.

Tomkins was part of the West Ham squad that suffered relegation in 2011, but in the one season the Hammers spent in the Championship, was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, racking up four goals and as many assists.

In recent years, Tomkins has remained in important part of the first-team squad, although under Slaven Bilic last season he lost out to Angelo Ogbonna as the preferred partner for Winston Reid in central defence, while Michail Antonio was utilised at right-back during the second half of last season.

In total, Tomkins played 164 times for the Hammers in the Premier League, scoring four goals and registering five assists.

The new Palace signing has featured at every level for England from Under 16 to Under 21s, making 37 appearances, but has yet to earn a senior cap. Tomkins did feature for the Great Britain Olympic football squad at London 2012, playing twice.

The Prospects

Perhaps tellingly, Tomkins was immediately handed a role in Pardew’s first XI in their opening summer friendly against Philadelphia Union earlier in the week, with the Palace manager playing down a slight strain picked up by the new boy midway through the match.

Tomkins’ arrival certainly looks bad news for Damien Delaney, with the former expected to replace the Republic of Ireland international alongside Scott Dann in Pardew’s back-four. The versatile Tomkins has also played at right-back, and could offer cover behind Joel Ward in that position for the Eagles.

Looking at Tomkins’ underlying statistics last term, he was on a par with Dann for clearances (one every 18.3 minutes compared to Dann’s 18) and was superior for interceptions (38.2 minutes to 53.7), though lagged some way behind for blocks (one every 206.4 minutes to Dann’s 72.4 minutes).

There’s little doubt Dann will be the name most Fantasy managers will gravitate to when looking for a Palace defender given his performances last season, when he scored five goals and grabbed one assist. The downside is that’s likely to earn the former Blackburn man a price rise in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, perhaps up to 5.5.

Other members of Palace’s backline could come in at either 4.5 or 5.0, with Tomkins possibly valued at 5.0 in light of his proven Premier League pedigree.

Given that the Eagles managed just eight clean sheets (six at home) and conceded 51 times, Tomkins will need to offer a decent attacking threat to come into consideration. Encouragingly, he won a higher percentage of his aerial duels than Dann last season and bearing in mind that Palace were third for goal attempts from set-pieces last term, he may yet emerge as a viable cheaper option.

The fact that Palace have, according to our Season Ticker, the most favourable fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks (WBA, tot, BOU, mid, STO) certainly boosts their appeal as we start to assemble our 15-man squads. Tomkins looks very likely to become a key part of the rearguard alongside Dann, and with an expected cheaper price tag, has the chance to stake an initial claim for a spot in our five-man backlines.

  2. Premium Defenders Thoughts
    Beautiful Game

What are your thoughts on the premium defenders?
I am thinking of going with two of the following:

Man Utd: As of now, it looks that Shaw maybe the best attacking option from the back four. Jose has one wing back to be more attacking and the other full back to give defensive stability like Ivanovic that more attacking and Azpi giving cover.

Man City: Think one of Guardiola's full back(maybe the LB) will be key from fantasy prospective. He uses the full back's in a very attacking way in some games. Take Alba or Alaba for example. They were practically playing as midfielders in some of the matches. Maybe watch out for Bruno Peres or Fabinho if city can land one/both of them.

Arsenal: I think Bellerin will again be the most attacking but he won't come cheap due to his last year's performance. Maybe Gabriel could nail down a place and he'll be a little cheaper.

Spurs: Alderweireld. But they'll have champions league this time around.

Chelsea: I liked Conte's defensive tactics in Italian colors but it was with Italy and they are always defensively strong. Feel Chelsea are going to keep a lot of cleanies but not sure who the best pick could be.

Liverpool: Having no Europe to worry about is surely good for their prospects and many believe Klopp will bring the best out of the squad. I feel they will be a good side in front of the goal but not to sure if we can trust their defensive strength as of now. For me their defence will be wait and watch.

At the moment I am contemplating of going with:
    Shaw, City/Chelsea, Cheap 3-way rotation

But it would be great if you guys could share your thoughts. 🙂

I like it. I'm definitely starting bigger in defence this year and then downgrading if the bargains appear. Vice versa is too much of a headache.

True. It would be a headache if we need to do 4.5 -> 6 in defense given this year there are so many good choices in premium mid and striker category.

All valid points Niel, I'm waiting for game to launch next Tuesday and then I'll get down to buisness.
Being a successful FPL managers requires a combination of many attributes, one being the ability to adapt and being flexible, sometimes 2ft can sort a lot worst case scenario a -4, but for me setting up in a predetermined fashion and sticking to it rigidly is a recipe for disaster, we must adapt quickly to the game as it unfolds. Yes I have a skeleton of team in my head but prices/positions will influence me a lot, thanks Niel.

I normally go with cheapies at the back. Was thinking of changing tactics a bit this season though, but it all really depends on whether there is value in midfield and attack.

Do you really think Koeman can sort out the defensive frailties of last season? Will Baines still be taking penalties for the new manager?
If so, Baines or Coleman can again become great premium defender choices, especially Baines as he got his penalty duties back at the end of the last seaon.

My best season start (top 10k inside GW3 and never moved out) came when I was following the 1-2-2 policy at the back, meaning 1 big hitter and 2 decent rotations. I don't know if it was an anomaly, but a 2-3-way rotation never seemed to work for me.

As for the defence, I think I'd want to start off with a Chelsea defender and a United defender if I do go with a 2-3 policy. Who would Chelsea's defensive prospects would be is still to be seen, but I am expecting a couple of signings (in the Center Mid and at the back) and in case we don't acquire players in these areas, I am not touching.

Everton definitely need adding to that list, with attacking full backs an Mori who could be cheaper and is a bit of a menace in the opposition box.

Courtois may also be an option to tap into the Chelsea clean sheets if he's nicely priced.

Find it weird how many people are going for Shaw given how injury prone he is. The attacking threat is more than negated by the fact he is a transfer-out waiting to happen. I'd pick Smalling any day over him.

Had Shaw in mind already. May even be a 5.0m bargain but probably 5.5m. I agree hopefully Chelsea can do an Italy, well they wear the same colour shirts so that's a start I guess! A combination of Burnley, Boro, WBA will fill me out too.

Man Utd and Chelsea might be the best options as they've got good bus-drivers at the helm to park the bus. 🙂
I was thinking Bailly from ManU would be a great option.. we all know ManU biggest issue was a good CB.
Bellerin will still be high on my watch-list but will all depend on the prices. Else, might go for Azpi.

For defenders its the obvious decision between attacking fullbacks or big centre backs who are a live danger at corners.

      Man Utd
Everyone is jumping on the Shaw bandwagon, and if fit I can see why. Smalling is the nailed on starter but I will be more interested in whoever starts at RB. This is all ifs and buts, but I will explain my reasons. On the left you have Martial, who will stay out wide, on the right you have Mkhi, who is at his best in his central role, so expect whoever is at RB to be attacking a lot, obviously this could work the opposite way with the RB staying back ala Mourinho/Ivanovic/Azpil but I have a feeling because of Martial, Shaw may play a little deeper. I think Darmian or Valencia will occupy RB (with F-M as a third option) so I can see it being a budget friendly punt.

      Man City
The fullback situation is a mess here, Sagna/Zabs, Clichy/Kol, none appeal at the mo although I will say I have always gone City RB over the past few seasons. Pep loves marauding full backs but until I see a new fullback come in (LB?) I'll be keeping my attention firmly locked on Otamendi. Otamendi you say? Well Kompany is too injury prone to spend that kind of money on. I think Otamendi is absolutely class and you just have to look at CB's under Pep to see their return. Depending on value, it Otamendi by some way for me.

      Chelsea
Chelsea fan here, a lot depends on the formation Conte decided to go with, but from his presser it sounds like he will try to go with what suits our players, which gives me a feeling we will start with 4-4-2 (4-2-4). If Zouma was fit he would start, as it stands its a toss up between JT & Cahill, of those I will edge with JT due to having a summer off and Conte being pretty forceful about him being captain. One think I will definitely look at is if Kenedy is classed as a defender, I can certainly see Azpil at RB and Kenedy at LB - Ivan-Cah-JT-Azpil is scarily lacking pace. Kenedy is a complete gamble but certainly one I'll be watching. Cuadrado as a wing back I'll be looking to steer away from if 3-5-2 as he will be too expensive for what would be a defender (listed as a midfielder), I will be watching him eagerly though if he does play. Until we know what Conte is set with, Courtois is the best pick for a Chelsea defensive option.

      Arsenal
I hate the LB options. Gabriel is a budget friendly option but isn't great so its between Kosc and Bellerin here, with Arsenal's style of play its all about Bellerin for me, a relative no brainer.

      Spurs
Wimmer will be the steal here until Jan returns. Toby will be the most expensive defender in FPL this season. You can't go wrong with any of the back 4(/5) at Spurs. I think when together Toby & Jan are the best CB duo in the league, I'd look at whichever is cheaper of the two.

      Liverpool
Changes galore, Skrtel was the FPL mainstay of that defence. Lovren needs to step up to the plate this season so he could be interesting with a hope of the Southampton Lovren returns. Clyne is the obvious choice here but I will be keeping tabs on Karius, big big fan of his. This seasons goalkeeping situation makes it a tough one for me.

      Others:

      Coleman over Baines.
Cresswell one to keep an eye on, Antonio classification too.
      Fuchs of interest.
Prefer Tomkins to Dann, maybe as a differential.
Ake if classified as a defender.

      Sorry for the essay!

        Have an upvote.

I keep forgetting about Wimmer, and Man City.

I think that this season is a little unusual in that we are really expecting a lot of clean sheets from some of the big teams now that Mourinho, Conte and Guadiola are here.

      • 12 Years

I never start with a Premium defender, its too much investment early doors before team values build. Just give me the cheapest starters from two of the big 6 then I'll sort out a rotation for my last spot.

Thoughts on GK's? I essentially consider them the same as defenders. It's typically hard to predict who gets save points, Cech for example got a ton despite being from a top team. Defenders are picked by their attacking threat but still from the best defensive teams, which are the same teams you would want a keeper from.

I'll probably have a mid priced keeper, maybe Sot'n, paired with a cheap playing keeper to semi-rotate. Then have 2 premium defenders, a mid priced defender, and a cheap rotating pair. Depending on budget I would like to try the 3-way cheap rotating defenders but I always seem to do well with a solid defensive investment.

Mad to have more than 1 IMO. We go on about wasting money on premium defenders because it will restrict budget options. Well spending 24 mil plus on 2 players is more crazy. Covering 5 spots at 26 mil is more sound. The only thing I can add is a premium captain will be a must. Hence 1 of them maybe.

it's not worse, they're as bad as each other. Other nations will look at both as being terrible for football globally. They both represent the haves whereas almost every other nation in football world represent the have nots.

Not worse at the moment, but will get there imo. An example being the Higuain offer. If he was to go to the PL he'd probably earn £200k a week. If he was to take the current Chinese offer, he'd be on €800k a week. And I think it's going to get even crazier.

            that's just speculation on amounts.

Main point I'd make is that the English shouldn't start criticizing the Chinese model of spending, since they practically invented it, but at the very least have been profiting from it to the detriment of teams throughout the continent and behind.

True enough. No argument here on that, when I compare it to Irish football levels of spending it's almost an entirely different sport.

English teams spend what there income allows., which is quite a bit due to people all around the world wanting to watch our game. Neither do we have our government funding transfers. You cant compare the two.

Chinese income obviously allows it too if they're spending it. PL is funded by oil-rich billionaires. I think it's a more than fair comparison.

The UK Government has encouraged rich owners to come to the UK with relaxed policy on investors, so you could argue that they have been involved to an extent.

Based on weekly earnings from a contract, Pelle earns 25k more. Ronaldo probably surpasses him when you take into account advertising and other clauses like that, but from what I have, his basic salary is €325,000 a week.

Pretty sure his basic salary is higher. When Pelle signed, there were all kinds of tables out and Ronaldo was top on pure salary alone, with Pelle being the same as Ibra (so tied 5th)

I'd have no doubt his earnings overall are higher. All I have is that Ronaldo's basic was lower, but I've seen something else to suggest that Ronaldo's figure is after tax unlike Pelle's. So if that's the case I got it wrong.

People were comparing the Ibe to Cazorla transfer fees on the last page . There were extenuating circumstances with the Cazorla deal . The owners were thinking about selling the club at the time and were trying to reduce costs that's why Cazorla was sold on the cheap .

also the pound is weak at the moment and teams have more money so player value in the PL at the moment is very skewed/ 15m is the same as about 7/8m a few years ago, maybe even less.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

James Tomkins is among a handful of players that are swapping Premier League clubs in search of more starts. Ibe who has moved from Liverpool to Bournemouth is another.

Which of this season's Moving Targets do you think will do well. And considering their lack of starts this season do you think they could offer excellent value for 16/17 in their new surroundings?

FPL wise, Mane is going to be gold at Liverpool (I'm hoping, anyway).

From a footballing view, I think Wanyama to Tottenham could be huge for them - but not necessarily from a fantasy perspective

Townsend at 6.0m or so will be locked in for me as 4th or 5th mid. With Gray or Wilson as third striker it makes a nice balance with the option of 3-5-2.

    Football fans are funny

I've seen fans (obviously not West Ham ones) critical of Payet committing to West Ham saying he lacks ambition

If he came out and said he wanted to leave, those same people would proably accuse of of disrespect or disloyalty to the club that took a chance on him

So he did. But it doesn't mean he will, it doesn't only depend on his will now. Suppose some club bid some £50M for him. West Ham might as well take it, and if that happened, it could push Payet to move.

Moving to the Olympic stadium, second consecutive qualification into the europa league. Great manager and you only have to look at the players with have been trying to sign this year that we have improved massively.

Would expect another great season from us if we can land a good goalscorer this window.

Sure we're not a psg or Madrid but definitely not a club short of ambition.

Agree but managers can make the difference.
We have a good example in Leicester and Portugal.. They were not even part of the favorites.

IMO the team don't even have an identity in term of style of play.
I would blame the lack of English player making the rank in PL due to the big number of foreigners.
If you consider the number of English players playing for the top teams on regular basis, it can be counted in one hand.
But that would have made PL the worst if it was the contrary.

Not being rude but Carragher did infamously say that a full back is either a failed CB or a failed winger. In my experience the "weakest" players are shifted to full back. What are your thoughts on this

So true for me. Got shifted out to right back when everyone else got bigger and taller. Was pretty quick in my younger days, so lots of overlapping with our "winger" having to cover for me. 😉

I wasn't fast enough to be a winger, or tall enough to be centre back. Left back on my youth team was one of our best players though, much more attacking. I was a reliable Gary Neville type!

Carragher did not have the skills or speed to play as a full back, so this statement makes no sense to me.

The modern game a good full back is a good winger and a solid defender.

I think the modern full back is such a difficult position. You need boundless energy, need to tackle, dribble, cross and get up and down the pitch in 10 seconds.
The modern full back needs to have a good understanding with the CDM to cover him when he marauds forward

I always wondered about this quote, I remember when Carragher said it, because I thought it was nonsense. Failed winger? Perhaps, it does happen. But a failed centre back? That suggests current centre backs could slot in at full back no problem. Which is utter rubbish. Very different disciplines imo.

So true, look at Alves at Barcelona, Baines for Everton, even going back to Irwin for Man Utd... deadly crossers of the ball, dead ball specialists, and linking defence with attack.

Carragher gave everything for sure, but his range was limited.

Striker. Not extremely fast but have always made up for that with timing runs, finding space, hold up play and finishing. Dribbling is okay, nowt special, but I much prefer being in a team that knows how to pass around and move defenders than trying to beat every man.

It's very hard to drill into some people that the ball moves faster if you pass it. Maybe it's just Irish football, but there are always a couple in a team that take f**king ages to stop messing around and start moving it!

I'm in nets or a utlity player on the wings. Shot stopping's definitely my main skill but I do enough of that in hockey so like to play outfield when I can. Outfield I'm not great technically but I can run a lot and I've got a hammer of a shot so I usually end up playing out wide. Either side suits me so I let the other winger get first dibs.

well I am banned from all major physical activity for at least another week anyway. There aren't many teams around me, and the one I can pick play games on Sunday and I work Sunday. I used to be a Modric type in my day, deep lying midfield playmaker, but not played properly since I was a student

Ah mate that's a shame, do you live out in the sticks? Most leagues play on Saturdays if you can travel a bit. I've got big respect for a decent CM, its definitely the hardest position to play well in.

actually I don't, but there just aren't many teams in my area. My old secondary school has an Old Boys team that I wanted to join, but they are the ones who play on Sunday. The other team I looked at play on Saturdays, but they train on Thursday and i work late on Thursday.

I always used to play up front in a Sunday league. I'm not fast, big or strong but I do have a good first touch and pop up in the right places. Regularly used to hit 15+ goals in a 30 game season.

Alas, 3 serious ACL injuries (and age) have put my playing days well behind me...

Attacking mid that also plays up top and either left mid or right mid. Sometimes even defensive mid. Like to thread through balls and open up space for others. Most people usually aren't on my wavelength here, there's a serious lack of soccer IQ in the USA. Bunch of dribblers and sprinters that can't pick a pass or pick their heads up. A guy from Madrid once joined my team and my assist totals went through the roof. 🙂

I have played the following positions: right back, centre midfield, right wing, and second striker.

In youth football I started as a right winger but moved to right back which became my favourite and natural position.

Tough tackling and no nonsense, but very comfortable on the ball and liked to play it out from the back and to feet. My key qualities apart from those mentioned are set piece delivery, crossing and creative/long passing (comes from my days on the wing or midfield), and leadership.

I captained my senior team for three seasons in my mid to late 20s but dropped out of the game after a tackle on an opposition player which led to an abandoned game and an ambulance being called and the fella having a shattered ankle which needed pins. One of those things, bad for him and bad for me as my head was never really right for competitive 11 a side grass football ever since.

      C'est la vie unfortunately.

Ball playing CB. Also capable in midfield and as a backup goalie. Had to play CB due to no one else being particularly capable in that position. I was captain of the side so had to take one for the team.

Main qualities include leadership, determination, heading, speed and organisation. Weakness included occasional lapses in concentration, and not being quite good enough at marking or tackling for the position.

      Interesting thread.

I'm a right-foot dominant attacking player who prefers playing on the left side so I can cut in on my strong foot.

I am all pace, can be a real threat (in an over-35 beer league, mind you), but admit to taking on too many backs and getting dispossessed more than I'd like.

So I guess I'm like a not-nearly-as-lethal Sanchez, without the beautiful hair and nipples.
