Next up in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are Manchester United.

First up, we cast an eye over the Red Devils team statistics and compare them to the rest of the Premier League in Louis van Gaal’s final season at the helm, before delving into the data to assess their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources as we look to gain insight on their prospects under new manager, Jose Mourinho.

United ended the 2015/16 campaign in fifth position after racking up 66 points and were just nudged into the Europa League slots by rivals Man City on goal difference alone.

Whilst the Dutchman’s defence proved a handy source of Fantasy returns, the same can’t be said for United’s attack – they found the net on just 49 occasions, which was one more than Sunderland and down on their tally of 62 strikes in 2014/15.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Surprised by the lack of Sanchez talk looking through all the comments from past couple of days. I think if he stays fit he will be top points scoring midfielder, no?

I think Hazard will be, and potentially KDB/Mkhitaryan to both outscore him.

Not that I don't think Sanchez will do well, but Giroud doesn't seem to gel with him - feel like he'll do much better once Welbeck is abck

It is hardly a surprise what it more surprising is the fact it has taken them this long to discover it.

Unfortunately Fifa won't do anything about the World Cup as it is completely unrelated even though Russia bought it then destroyed all the evidence. Can't see too many people flocking to watch the games as you will end up getting a good kicking

not from FPL point of view which teams you would like to see doing well this season? I would love to see Liverpool up there, because I really like Klopp, that's just my favourite type of coaches. Also Leicester, to prove that it wasn't just one season wonder. Saints, because that's just so out of the box, they sell players, they get new good ones, so to see them continiue that would be nice, even this season it looks like it's going to be really tough to keep up the level.

there seem to be many good striker options and many Aguero alternatives in city's squad..... thinking that KDB or even Nolito might provide enough value combined with freeing up a precious striker slot

Anybody have a recommendation on the best EPL draft (i.e., one Hazard in the league; not 1 per team) website? I am trying to find one that best mirrors the rules/points of the official system (focusing on goals, assists, cleansheets, bonus points, etc.). Any advice would be appreciated.

Is it worth avoiding all players who haven't had a summer rest and full pre-season?
Ie. Argentina + Chile players and any players in Euro squads in last 8.
Even players who didn't see a huge amount of match-minutes (eg Vardy) wil have still be training regularly / maintaining fitness.

Thinking players like Aguero, Sanchez, Ozil, Hazard may not come out firing in GW1-2.
It's a risk factor in picking them from the get-go, but how serious a factor is it?

    1. Zizoulicious
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 9 months ago

Good question. If it's 50/50 between them and another player, I'll go for the rested one.

Also, depends whether they had a big workload last season and if they got to latter stages of the euros.

So maybe no Payet and Ozil to begin with

I know we don't have the prices to hand yet, but how many players new to the league or to a new club will you be taking a punt on? I think its pretty risky going for any more than three unless planning a wildcard early doors.

They all got promoted on the back of a solid, organised defence.

No problems going with all 3, should be some excellent value.

Indeed, three solid sides. But if other teams also have 4.5 defenders, I feel it's less risky to pick established teams

What drives me bloody insane is when FPL veterans say someone along the lines of "I'll be avoiding player X because he's got 3 away games". Now, if those away games are away to the Etihad, Bridge or the Emirates, yes a team may set up defensively and thus hinder the FPL potential of their attacking players. But most of the time, this rhetoric is used even if the away games are at Hull, Southampton and Burnley for example. It's about the tactics and how a player is deployed (along with form, confidence etc) that affects a player's points haul. Not what stadium he's playing in.
