Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

    Please RMT.

    Foster (Jaku)
    Shaw, Baines, Williams (Francis,Pieters)
    Hazard, Mkhi, Bolasie, Downing (Capoue)
    Kun, Ibra, Wilson.
    (0 ITB)

I'll be looking to pugrade Williams to Azpi or Ivan around GW3, but where to free up the 1.0? Similarly that 1.0 could be used to do Wilson > Benteke if he goes to Palace.
I usually Wildcard relatively early, not planning for it spesifically, but I tend to pull the trigger early to jump on bandwagons and free up cash with starting 4.0's.
Finally, after giving it some thought I'm liking Downing at 5.5, especially after Negredo arrived, but don't see him in many teams. Any thoughts?

Nice team. Mkhi downgrade if you're looking for cash? Lots of good players from 7.5 up. Dunno about Downing, Karanka nearly quit after his signing was forced on him- Middlesbrough aren't that much of an attacking team either.

Any other suggestions at 5.5 then? I had Snodgrass, but Hull's fixtures are pretty terrible to start with.
I'll keep an eye on Downing during preseason then 🙂

I'd like to start the season with Mhki and Ibra.... allows me scope to downgrade rather than upgrade, and they are the type of players that could quickly bandwagon if they score early on. I was considering Martial as well, but Mhki is having a good preseason.

Yeah I understand, it's a good team of course. I'm not sure- I personally think that 5.5 could get a better defender than midfielder, so am looking at 4-3-3 accordingly. Maybe Walker or Terry/Zouma.

            Very true...
I've always looked at a player like Baines (even when he costs 7) thinking... man, that is a lot of potential points from somebody that costs 7... but it rarely worked for me.
I could downgrade Downing and upgrade Pieters for Cresswell/Virgil/Walker/ or scratch around a bit more to get Ivan (Ibra to Kane a bit later on perhaps)

New to this. Appreciate if someone RMT

    Valdes, Mannone
    Nyom, Friend, Shaw, Francis, Robertson
Hazard, Martial, De Bryune, Ozil, Fletcher
    Lukaku, Austin, Musa

Tried to go for more goal scoring potential in midfield instead of the big striker names. Not sure if that makes sense. Thanks !

    1. Ryssel
      • 12 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

Nyom doesn't have the best of fixtures for the first few weeks.
How assured are you of Austin starting? I was under the impression Shane Long is first in the pecking order.
Ozil might not start the season.... Why not Downgrade him to SIggy/Tadic/Ayew/7.5 and upgrade either Austin or Musa.
Finally... for cheap strikers, rather consider Wilson (on fire start of last season) or Gray or Negredo.

Looking at Yaya in the 8.5 budget range because City fixtures look good in comparison to the games Coutinho and Firmino have at Liverpool

The question though is how will City set-up? Is Yaya nailed though for the start of the season ?

I have Gylfi too, but combined they had nearly 330 points between them last season and cost only 15 mill.

Probably won't though, too ballsy lol

I'm considering doubling up for the first two, hard to find two better midfielders and planning an early WC when the Euro players return.

Ayew and Siggy in the first two has to be better than Fabregas and Siggy.

Foward line is obviously stacked and Mids is good balance but other 2 lines are considerably weak. Would be worth trading Lukaku > 6.5 then get in say Foster and Heaton for your GK. With the left over 2.0 upgrade backs. Cedric isn't nailed on and Morgan wont keep as many clean sheets without Kante. Shaw is a good replacement.

What do you lot think of this squad? Willing to give help on yours if you help me. Trying to find all the value players with goal scoring threat

    GK: Valdés, Jakupovic
DEF: Shaw, Walker, Keane, Stones, Paredes
MID: De Bruyne, Mkhitaryan, Townsend, Shaquiri, Hejberg
    FWD: Ibrahimovic, Kane, Carroll

    1. simsey747

      9 years, 4 months ago

Although the GK is very cheap I cant see them scoring well. Foster and Heaton would be my go to pair. Backline is good with Stones a nice cheap option into Evertons backline. Not a big fan of your mids, Mkhitaryan I like very much and De Bruyne should be great for a full season. On the other hand I dont see much value in Shaqiri or Townsend. I would rather a 7.5 and 5.5 such as Sigurdsson and Downing. Forwards are great! Kane doesnt have a huge ownership and should be in for another good season and Carroll is value at 6.5. Overall great team! can you comment on my team below?

Still have 2.0 in the bank. Not sure if its worth trying to have both Aguero and Ibra in the lineup. Any Thoughts would be appreciated.

      Love this team Silly Conte.

So much value in the 7.5 midfield range which allows you the bigger defence that will score more than the cheap ones where clean sheets will be harder to predict.

I'd maybe lose Barkley to someone like Townsend and use the extra 1m in midfield so you have a Firmino type in there.

Agree, a 3-5-2 with nothing but 7.5 mids is intriguing, at 8.5 prefer Ericksen to Firmino cuz of fixtures and LIV rotates so much.

      I like this.... funky midfield.
I heard a lot of people talking up Fabregas... but I'm not so sure.
Hernandez on the Bench hardly inspires as well.

Why not slightly downgrade Fabregas to upgrade Hernandez to one of the promising 6.5's? It would give you nice options.

Because it has Ibra, Kane, and Vardy instead.. Aguero is too expensive he won't score THAT many goals unless he's fit the whole season but it's a huge gamble because he's usually injured

What do you guys think of a midfield 4 of Mikhitaryan / Fabregas or Tadic / Siggy and Townsend?

Strong enough or does it need an extra big hitter in place of Fabregas?

I quite like it, think there may be some value in Fab. Gives some nice £ foe elsewhere.

Thanks, I'll have a really big defence and attack but just concerned that it may be one man short in midfield.

I guess I Coul swap Townsed for Gradel (as don't see much in that) and upgrade Fabregas to Firmino.

Mikhitaryan / Firmino / Siggy / Gradel look stronger?

Which position will Fab play in?

I'm guessing he may play him next to Kante which could free him up.

      Pure guesswork at this point.

Kane might be eased in over the first 2 weeks (Especially with the new guy arriving).
Can you upgrade Kane to Ibra or maybe downgrade him to Lukaku or Giroud or somebody, while keeping the money in the bank to get him back once he starts starting

What are you guys thinking about Bojan?
I haven't seen him in many teams yet he seems priced fairly well.

To refine the question: Bojan or Bolasie for you @ 6.0?

Not the greatest of fixtures in the first five games

True enough.... GW2,3,4 are pretty rought fixtures.... but wow Stoke has a great run after that. guess that gives me time to assess.

I will be bringing in some Stoke assets a bit later, picking a team at the moment for the first 5 games and will watch form before Wild Carding

Which option will get more points?

    a. mkhti siggy tadic puncheon Watson
    kun costa vardy

    b.
    mkhti mahrez siggy fabregas townsend
    kun Wilson long

A ... but you will only play 5 mids and 3 forwards once 😉

Take Mkhti Kun and Gylfi out of the choice (all in both chioices) and drop a midfield then ask yourself the same question

Anyone up at this ungodly hour please RMT ...

Heaton/Forster (May drop Heaton to Jukop if Hull don't sign a Keeper, saving 0.5)
    Shaw - PvA - Pieters - Friend - Francis
Mkhi - Fabregas - Ayew (or Siggy if looks to start) - Townsend - Capoue
    Defoe - Sturridge - Aguero

1.5m in the bank if I decide to drop Defoe for a 6.5 and upgrade Studge to Ibra.

Is the defence too weak? Is Sturridge too much of a risk given his injury record? Any help welcomed.

Stturidge is simeone who just likes to shoot. I like him very much but yes his injury record is the concern. Mid looks a bit light. Dont see much cleanies there. Defoe as a pick can prove gold. Wold like to improve your def n mid a bit

    GK: Valdés, Jakupovic
DEF: Friend, Keane, Fosu-Mensah, Taylor, Paredes
MID: Mkhitaryan, Alli, Townsend, Fischer, Hejberg
    FWD: Aguero, Ibrahimovic, Vardy

That defence is full of uncertainty because of the front 3

      Carroll, Rhodes, Berahino too

I would go for the easiest fixtures for the first 5 games and watch form

So Long/Berahino/Negredo are the ones to consider

It is a lottery .... assuming Berahino doesn't move on or throw his toys out of the pram, Long starts and Negredo fits well in to a newly promoted team 😉

Match up fixtures and set pieces for the casting vote maybe ?

    Heaton / Foster
    Shaw / Terry / Souare / Kone / Friend
    Mkhitaryan / Mahrez / Sigurdsson / Townsend / Fletcher
    Aguero / Costa / Gray

What do you guys think about this?
Decent balance all around in my opinion, nice starting fixtures for most.
