Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Lots of people opting for Payet. Do we think he'll be ready to go from GW1? He's not back in training yet. Also, not seen many RMT's with KDB...I would persoanlly rather double up Aguero & him than Ibra & Mika. Anyone else agree it's too punty to have both the Utd boys?

Agree. But if you surf back, you could see, that not a lot people have in their squads lads, who played on euro such as Payet, Ozil, etc.

First post of the new season! Appreciate everybody is after feedback, but it would be much appreciated!

    Foster/Heaton
    Shaw/Stones/Robertson/Pieters/Fernandez
    Myki/Payet/Townsend/Siggy/Fletcher
    Kun/Sturridge/???

Hoping Stones gets City move and cant decide on a 6.5 striker just now.

i wouldn't touch hull with a barge pole, change him for kone/souare
the 6.5 striker is a lottery, but there are a few decent options, keep an eye on preseason
i wouldn't go sturridge, pool have a mixed start, but that's me

      overall it's decent

Reposting as didn't get a response 🙂 Rate my team please?

    Foster/Jakupovic

    Shaw/Walker/Coleman/Friend/Evans

    Payet/Townsend//Mhkitaryan/Ayew/Capoue

    Aguero/Lukaku/Wilson

Can't help feel the midfield is lacking firepower but don't know where to shave the money off for funds.

I'm not sure about United def double up. Morgan must start in gw 1 if you'll have him. Prefer Ayew/Siggy/Tadić as 7.5 mid to start with over Willian/Coutinho. Che has new manager with new sistem and Pool difficult fixtures from the off. Change Coq for some other cheap 5th mid (Hojbjerg, Watson/Capoue or Fletcher)

If United hit the ground running then Martial looks like a great pick, especially if you take his points tally and convert it to midfielder points.

Do you think there's much difference between Ayew and Sigurdson?

i personally prefer siggurdson as a player is very consistent and should start well considering they have easy fixtures dont think there is to much difference though just a gut feeling , feel like siggurdson is more of a goal threat

    Butland (Valdes)
    Shaw/Williams/Baines/Evans (Souare)
    Miki/De Bruyne/Ayew (Ibe/Capoue)

Who else do you reckon upfront for 6m? Could downgrade Williams to Taylor and make another .5m spare to spend on a striker. 6.5m for Wilson maybe? Worried about him due to his injury though.

          • 9 Years

yeah taylor or fernandez probably a good shout for williams - a lot of money in the defence, so freeing some up to change Rhodes could be good. Wilson has looked ok pre-season, as long as he can stay fit should do well for 6.5m

    Heaton/Jakupovic
    Dann/Dawson/Terry (2 x £4.0)
    Hazard/Mhiki/Towsend/Capoue/ Erikssen or Siggy
    Rondon/Aguero/Lukaku or Vardy

    Any advice appreciated 🙂 Cheers

      I'd go Eriksen + Lukaku.

Other than that, have you considered downgrading Dawson and Dann to (e.g.) Evans and Ward? It would allow you to get two other 4.5 defenders to rotate, rather than have two 4.0 guys who will never play.

      1. Swansea Bloke
        • 12 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

Yes I had considered but decided against it firstly because I like the goal threat of Dawson and Dann coupled with their early good fixtures, and secondly, I'm not a huge fan of rotation in fear of being trolled by decision. I take the decision away haha Thanks though, I'm thinking Erikssen and Lukaku too, although I'm a Swans fan so my heart says Siggy!

I'd go for Lukaku and Siggy and invest the extra money in getting someone than Rondon. Or invest in a sub defender

I have considered that too 🙂 Why not Rondon though? Excellent fixtures. Has scored pre season already. Definitely a differential. Thoughts?

Been evaluating HARD over the £6.5 mill strikers... Everyone is in agreement that one will fire! Or if not you can rotate between a few depending on fixtures/fitness etc.

If Rondon has got the fixtures then I think early doors he'll be a good shout. Give a look at Saints for there home games early doors too. I think however gets the nod between Austin and Long will be a good shout... Shane Long is due a big season because he's a cool finisher but lacking a bit positionally.

Sagna for Stones cos he'll end up and City and save you £0.5 mill. Then that extra cash can bring Townsend into play. I have Costa, but have been skeptical about him with Chelsea's new lad who looks like a worldy!!!

Hi guys, would appreciate if I could get a RMT:

    Heaton, Foster
    Koscielny, Shaw, Baines, Huth, Friend
    Mkhi, Silva, Eriksen, Fabregas, Capoue
    Lukaku, Giroud, Musa

I'm pretty happy with the goalkeepers and defence, but have been mulling over a few changes:

    Baines v Walker
    Eriksen v Alli
    Musa/Capoue v Long/Gradel
    Musa/Silva/Giroud v Wilson/Costa/Ozil

If you've got any input on those or anything else then i'd appreciate it! (Feel free to rip it to shreds, it's hardly template).

Baines over Walker- no champions league and think Everton could be a much improved team this year
Erikson over Alli- Alli Stills looks shattered and Erikson still outscored him last year anyway
      Capoue and Long?
Would definitely try and get Ozil in there but would be a little worried about his long Summer.
No way you could fit KDB in?

What do you guys think about having 1 solid keeper (De Gea) or having 2 to rotate? Personally, I had Cech all year last year and he probably got me more points than if I had rotated 2 and made some bad decisions.

    What do people think?

I personally never liked rotation, for me it was another headache that I would get wrong. I personally prefer just going for one premium keeper, however I made the mistake last season if getting courtios. He got sent off first game, si I replaced with Adrian who got sent off the following week!!!

    Mandanda/Foster
    Shaw/Azpy/Friend/
    Bolasie/Willian/Martial/Nolito
    Long/Costa/SERGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGIIIIIIIIIOOOOOOOO!

    Capoue/Pieters/Stones

    1) Martial vs Mkhi?
    2) Is Willian the best £7.5 mill mid?
    3) Is the new guy at Chelsea gunna start because he looks electric!!!

Bonus points for best team name as well...

    Cheers guys!!!

      1. Martial
      2. Fàbregas, Willian, Mata, Tadic, Sigurdsson and Ayew amongst the most popular. As for best, Ayew may get minutes as a forward.
      3. Batshuayi may start alongside Costa...dangerous.

      Good luck!

      Mkhit or Martial?
      Baines or Walker?
      Wilson or Paredes?

very top heavy - I'd perhaps downgrade one of the MFs to upgrade paradise and rotate the other 3 DFs...if you're confident Friend Souare and Evans will rotate well though then it could work nicely

    Thoughts?
    Had this team:
    Heaton | Foster
    Shaw Stones (Friend Kone Robertson)
Haz Eriksen Siggy/Tadic(undecided) Fischer | Hojbjerg
    Kun Ibra Long/Gray(dependent on above)

Done some tweaking and have come up with this alternative:
    Heaton | Foster
    Shaw Walker* (Friend Kone Robertson)
Haz Eriksen Redmond* Townsend* | Hojbjerg
    Kun Ibra Gray*

Which one looks better? Also, looking to possibly ship Kone and Robertson now, who's the best replacements out of Taylor/Francis/Souare/Other 4.5 rotation wise? Finally, Siggy>Ayew and Hojbjerg>Capoue? Any help appreciated.

      Here's my 10 cents...

I've gone with Souaré and Friend as my cheaper options, I wouldn't go anywhere near Robertson, or more to the point Hull.

I'm currently torn between Ayew and Sigurdsson myself but leaning more towards Ayew in the hope that he may get minutes up top.

Hojbjergs game time will have to be watched so I went with Capoue given his apparent new license to go forward under the new boss.

Afternoon folks! (Or at least here anyway)

It's time to get this show on the road, so here's my first of many drafts:
    Cech / Foster
    Souaré / Friend / Shaw / Walker / Zouma
Capoue / Fàbregas / De Bruyne / Ayew / Eriksen
    Rondón / Agüero / Long

A few things to note, the team is leaning more towards the first 4/5 fixtures as opposed to pre-season form. I'm monitoring the fitness of Zouma, would go with Azpilicueta otherwise. I'm also not 100% sure whether I'm going with Ayew or Sigurdsson.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

After first couple weeks yes. Maybe rested early on due to Euros and ticker says leave alone early doors anyway.
