Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

    RM (CRAZY?) T?

I'm just having a play around for what seems like the hundredth time... here's an idea that could well backfire but it's using only 4.0 and 4.5 GK & Def who will rotate well the first few games but allows for more investment in Mid & Fwds
I am planning on WC early in the International break anyhow so I might just give it a whirl.

    Foster
    Mee, Soare, Friend
    Mahrez, Mk, Ayew, Hazard
    Kun, Lukaku, Gray

    Jaku, Leko, Fernandez, M Wilson

Tell me it's a stupid idea and I'm crazy! 😛

You have sacrificed so much and your midfield looks very strong. Your strikeforce should be strenghtened considering how much you have sacrificed.
It could backfire but could end up netting you lots of points especially with that midfield.

    RMT PLEASE

GK: FORSTER, ( Sub :NORDFELDT Not ideal but no budget)
    DEF:FRIEND, BELLERIN, CRESWELL, SHAW( Sub:Paredes)
MID: MAHREZ, HAZARD, TADIC( Subs: Capoue,Kante)
    FOR: AGUERO, LUKAKU, WILSON

I would love to get a stronger midfield and maybe accomodate for Zlatan but I am unsure on what to do.

Do you think downgrading Lukaku to Long and upgrading Kante to Siggy or Ayew would be a good idea

    Also would you rather
    Costa or Lukaku
    Wilson or Long

    Thanks

i personally like costa over lukaku has an easier set of first 4 or 5 fixtures, maybe siggy over tadic.Try and get one or two 4.5 defenders maybe taylor from swansea .Wilson over long but you could consider berahino , negredo or gray

You may want to replace Creswell with Alderweild. Downgrage Costa, bring in Ibra instead becos of the fixture for August. Mahrez is rumoured to be considering Arsenal move. Ayew/Tadic/Mk and maybe Kante will be my advice for the midfield

Looks a bit of a mixed bag. With Cresswell injury downgrade to a £4.5M. Bellerin is expensive too. Like first 3 mids but use the savings to upgrade one of the others.Aguero + 2 is the dilemma of many . I personally think Long or Austin is an option . Lukaku always burns me.

with ddg you should play him everyweek, so get a 4.0 backup. i'd downgrade fuchs to morgan and use the money you've saved to get a 6.5 mid

Thanks for the advice. I had looked at that and im going to take your advice. I've always been happy to have a few low key midfielders as it allows me money to spend elsewhere. Fletcher should get 100 + points so it seems pointless adding 1.5 Million for someone who would get 20 more points in a season. I think i may look to upgrade one of my cheaper defenders to an Arsenal player, like Laurent Koscielny.

I also tend to use my wildcard early to avail of the price increases which allows me to buy better players throughout the first half of the season. But we shall see how things go!

        Thanks for your advice.

I'd stay clear of MCI FBs at the minute. Maybe wait to see if the Stones transfer goes through and you might have a 5.0 way into their defence.

I have Gray as my 6.5 at the minute for the early home (3/4) fixtures. He scored twice yesterday as well and has 4 in total in pre-season.

I'm keeping an eye on Charlie Austin at 6.5 as well. Scored and got an assist yesterday. Just don't fancy him going up to OT on Mourinho's first game at home - even though he did score there last season.

Those on the Foster/Heaton GK rotation, what are your plans first 3 GWs?

    GW1: Foster (cry) Heaton (SWA)
    GW2: Foster (EVE) Heaton (LIV)
    GW3: Foster (MID) Heaton (che)

I think I'm on Heaton, Heaton, Foster as it stands.

Right, back to the drawing board..

Decided to go heavy in strong defence and forwards as think there are so many good mid-priced mids capable of scoring well in the early weeks. Will balance it up more on the wildcard in a few weeks.

    Foster / Jaku
    Azpi / Coleman / Shaw / Friend / Amat
    Mahrez / Ayew / Redmond / Townsend / Capoue
    Kun / Costa / Lukaku

If a premium mid fires early, will just downgrade Costa to fit them in.
    Sound like a good plan?

Had the Ibra/Aguero duo in the mix for a long time and in the end, couldn't justify the budget. Ended up with this (for now). Please RMT:

    Foster (Jaku)

      Nice balance.
As Payet could have Euro hangover and might not be playing initially, I'd downgrade him to free up the funds for Aguero over Kane as I believe in the Dembele factor (when he doesn't play, Kane's returns aren't as good). Do you really need to spend all that cash on Bellerin as well?

The 'no dembele' reason doesn't hold with me. Spurs will still score without him.

Easy now. Too excited for the new season. Any thoughts on my draft? Thanks in advance.

    Foster (Heaton)

Shaw / Baines / Fuchs (Stones / Paredes)

Mahrez / Martial / Willian / Capoue (Fletcher)

    Aguero / Rashford / Vardy

Option to bring Payet in for Mahrez after the Hull game. Likely to swap Stones for van Arnholt but thought to hold onto him for now given the pending transfer and see if that changed my mind. Can't see him starting every game for City when Kompany is back. Can see Rashford starting the first run of games over Ibra.

    Cheers.

Thanks. Bolasie to Feghouli would only free up £0.5m though so couldn't upgrade to shaw or walker 🙁 Also, do we know if Feghouli guaranteed to start??

That is my problem. Went with ozil in the end as the mahrez transfer may take his form or nailed on position away?

    Foster (Heaton)

    Shaw / Azpi / Ayala (Pieters/ Evans)

    Feghouli/ Mkhitaryan/ Ayew/ KDB (Fischer)

    Aguero / Carroll / Rondon

How do you like my forwards ? I'm concerned about Rondon, but it's still so tempting with this fixtures and price tag.
    Cheers!
