Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Hi all, first post and new here.

For all of you rating teams, please can you advise:

    - what criteria you are using?
    - which factors are most important?
    - are you using gut feel, experience or data driving your opinions?

    Thanks.

Hello everyone, just created an account and this is my first post here. This will be my second year playing FPL, however I have been a huge fan of the sport and league for a while now. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone could RMT for me, it would be greatly appreciated. Also keep in mind that this is my first draft...

    Formation: 3-4-3

    De Gea (Jakupovic)

Alderweireld Azpilicueta van Dijk (van Aanholt, McAuley)

    Mkhitaryan Sigurdsson Lamela Feghouli (Capoue)

    Aguero Costa Gray

Looking at the team, I want to replace DDG, but I dont want to rotate goalkeepers. I really want Aguero in the team, so I need to find a way to improve my weak midfield. Finally I want my defense to have two solid picks witht the third defender being rotated.

Please give me your thoughts. Thanks.

    Cech, (jaku)

    Walker, bellerin, stones, (parades)(friend)

    Ozil, mahrez, ayew, kante, (fletcher)

    Defoe, aguero, lukaku

Am i taking too big of a hit on forwards for my midfield?

This is my first post here and my 3rd season playing Fantasy Football.

Here is my team at the moment:

      Cech / Heaton
Stones / Walker / Funes Mori / Ogbonna / Friend
      Mkhi / Mahrez / Mane / Siggy / Fischer
      Janssen / Batshu / Long

      Caveats - Siggy -> Everton, Mahrez -> Arsenal, Stones -> City/Chelsea

      1. DeathoftheParty
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

No Aguero is always going to be contentious. Will Janssen start? I Admit he looks good, but will Kane be the main man?

Batshu is a really good call, more like to start then Janssen and looks electric. Chelsea could be the team to watch early doors too.

Other than that... Yeah pretty good.

        1. Jarnathan
          • 9 Years

Someone suggested Kane playing slightly behind Janssen - it's all a guessing game at this point - and he'll likely be the first player off the team if it looks like they'll rotate.

If Benteke goes to CP, I'll probably replace Mane (with poor fixtures) to Erikson, and Benteke with Long.

      2. Kun Tozser

Benching headache every week - too much balance through unless they all rotate very well?

Mahrez will get more points at Leicester than Arsenal

Janssen Batman Micki - lot of ifs

        1. Jarnathan
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 4 months ago

I'm not so sure about Mahrez getting more points at Leicester. He'll go from a counter-attacking team (which everyone is wary of now) to a team focused on possession and more likely to convert his crosses (particularly if they sign Lacarzette). He's also a bargain entry into a potentially more aggressive Arsenal team this year - far cheaper than Sanchez...although the points may well be spread out more...

I agree with Janssen being the primary risk - but I can't see Tottenham spending that much money to bench him...

One of the main risks I see with my team is the lack of ManC - particularly with their early promising fixtures...

Have you considered Bolasie/Shaqiri/Lamela/Lallana vs a 9.0/9.5 midfielder?

I think a 6.5 forward is the best option for downgrading later. Negreno - Rhodes, in example... Gut feeling says Gray can have a firework start this season!

Okay but no Aguero is always a concern. Personally I see him as the striker everyone should have no matter the price and you never know what'll happen to Ibra.
Sanchez may not start in the opening few games.

Also Kone has a tricky few opening fixtures, lol don't fancy sunderland to keep a clean sheet with City away. Leko is being given a run but doesn't mean he'll start the season.

Ye anyway I'd sub out some beef from the back to the front if I were you

Yep it's was Kun less on purpose as my original draft has him in but with cheap defender rotations - only looking at last year's overall scores high end defenders competed very well with forwards and mids. Just wanted to see a different selection on paper. Sanchez and KDB providing the captain picks I think you could almost get away within Kun in this team, the bench and Ibra uncertainty the biggest worry

    • willblanchard

This is my second draft. The first was a bit defence heavy. Just wondering if this is balanced enough or if I've lost too much in the midfield.

      Here it is:

      Cech (Jaku)
Shaw / Azpi / Friend (Francis / Souare)
Mahrez / Ayew / Willian / Feghouli (Capoue)
      Aguero / Ibra / Long

I was going to wait and see which of the 9.5's got off to a flyer in regards to Mahrez/Martial/Mkhity (Maybe even Mane?). Seems strange that everyone seems to have rules Liverpool out completely.

Also Ayew/Tadic/Siggi are giving me a selection dilemma. I like Willian though and think feghouli may be a little gem.

Overall I think your team is quite well balanced. I would perhaps change Vardy for another striker like Costa or Lukaku which will give you more budget. At the moment you have two Leicester attackers so I would spread it out especially if Mahrez leaves.

        Please RMT.
