Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Hey Guys 😀 ... This my 1st draft for the season ... What do you think 🙂 ?

    Valdez - Jakupovic
    Sagna - Cedric - Friend - Coleman - Taylor
    Hazard - Mkhitaryan - Mirallas - Redmond - Feghouli
    Aguero - Vardy - Rhodes

Vardy and Rhodes are quesitons for me. I would rather Lukaku or Costa to Vardy at the moment. Also I am unsure about Rhodes gametime considering Negredo.

As 'Eden The Man' said, I am also questioning Vardy. I don't see him having as good of a season as he had last season. Players like Lukaku and Costa are proven scorers for more than one season, and are both cheaper.

Keep a close eye on Mirallas, his spot in the team could be taken by Arnautovic if he does move there.

Overall it's not too bad of a team, I like some of the picks in there.

I like it. Would maybe get Gabriel if Mertesacker is out for a while as he will be nailed on (unless Arsenal sign another cb)

      Votes:
      Gray
Close one... They both sit at a good price, if Fabregas is in more or a defensive position under Conte, then Tadic.
      Mahrez and Hazard.

I have got Eriksen and Walker from Spurs, and Hazard from Chelsea. I was really impressed with how Italy played under Conte, but it might take a while for them to get to the level of Italy defensively.
I think Hazard might have a great year, I have him in my team because I don't want to miss out on a Chelsea player as I feel like they could win the league, or get close.
With Spurs, I think a defender would be good to get due to their fixtures, or a midfielder as they aren't all too expensive. I would go with Kane, but I have seen someone say that he was tiring at the end of the season, and especially since he played Euros he could be rested at times. But yet again, I don't know too much about that.

    De Gea - Forster

    Fosu-Mensah - Alderweireld - Fonte - Stones - Cedric

    Willian - Coutinho - Kante - Cabaye - Martial

    Kane - Defoe - Lukaku

    Thanks.

Overall your team is decent. I don't think you need two quality goalkeepers. Maybe just stick with the one and downgrade the other to Jakupovic to fund your midfield. One big issue is you don't have Aguero. I would downgrade the Kante to Capoue and upgrade Cabaye to someone like Shaqiri.

      Please RMT

I agree with Eden on the two quality keepers. Pick one and go for a 4.5 like Foster for the other.

      Other defenders to condider:

      Dann
      Shaw
      Friend
      Dawson

As for Cabaye, you could ship him and a Soton defender and replace him with Redmond

I don't like the Carroll pick - he doesn't seem like he will ever be truly prolific or injury-free. That might be biased by owning him over the double last year... Also not sure if Delofeu will start so that might be a bit of a risk. Otherwise looking strong - good to see KDB, Aguero and Ibra all in the same team

I think spurs coverage would be ideal if possible. Considering Walker is 5.5 maybe swap him in for Koscielny. Then that would give you enough to swap Mahrez for Hazard.

I don't like Jakupovic or Paredes as neither seem likely to be regulars - would try to find funds to upgrade to regular starters.

Wilson or Gray I'd say, close call.

          Tadic = more attacking IMO.

Definitely Hazard the either of the other two - hard to say how well either will do this season.

First draft, feel free to rip it apart, cheers.

    Lloris/Jaku

    Shaw/Gabriel/Stones/Evans/Pieters

    Eriksen/DeB/Ayew/Redmond/Capou

    Augero/Costa/Wilson

This assumes Mertesacker being out for a while, Stones moving, Wilson, Costa and Redmond all being nailed which are potentially questionable.

    Thoughts? Muchos gracias hombres

      Two quick points:

      1) considered upgrading Stones to Coleman or Baines? They're more likely to score/assist meaning more chance of Bpts
      2) Considered Townsend over Redmond? (better starting fixtures but I see the pros and cons of both)

      Overall, Good team 🙂

Decent team. I would suggest to downgrade a couple of your defenders, having 5m defenders on your bench is too much imo. But I do like the defence other than the cost, some good attacking potential and clean sheet potential there.

I don't like the Willian pick too much, and I don't know if he will be starting a lot for Chelsea considering they have Pedro and Cuadrado as well.

      Overall pretty decent.

Out of interest, what is the highest Rate My Team tally anyone has found so far. This is not my own preferred selection, BUT the following team is worth over 323 on 'RMT' - your thoughts, guys? It's certainly a balanced side ...

Well considering you have the front three you do plus Hazard in mid, I think that is pretty good. Personally I would maybe swap Capoue for Fletcher simply down to clean sheets imo. Maybe look at Puncheon in for Gradel, due to him being more creative and chipping in with goals.

      Decent considering Aguero and Ibra.

Personally would lose McAuley for a 4.0. Not a big fan of Firminho so downgrade for someone cheaper and upgrade 5.5

      But what do I know

    Schmeichel -- Valdes
    Wollschied -- Ward -- Azpilicueta -- Friend -- Walker
    Ozil -- Martial -- Barkley -- Nolito -- Hojbjerg
    Giroud -- Deeney -- Lukaku

Any thoughts? Trying to build a team without Aguero.

Gone wild but finally got a starting 11 for GW1&2. Not planning any subs for GW2. Thoughts?

    Foster (Jak)
    Shaw Walker Williams (Friend Wasilewski)
    Mahrez Silva Ayew Willian Mkhitarayan
    Aguero Negredo (Campbell)

Just not fancying many strikers to definitely start/hit the ground running.

      Certainly different!
I like all but Willian. His place in the team might be under threat at Conte likes Cuardado and I don't rate him as a FPL player. Sure he can score a free kick, but never looks particularly threatening in open play

Don't really know how this works but.... RMT?

Looks good. Not sure about Lamela as a FPL option though, he fails to deliver consistent points
Some good options at 7.5 if you can find 0.5 extra ... Cazorla maybe?

Agree about 7.5 comment just not with the Cazorla thing.
        Fab seems safer
get there with Feg> Fletcher or Townsend> Bolasie

My First Draft... (Ayew My Friend)

    Mandanda Jakupovic
    Gabriel Shaw Moreno Friend Evans
    Ayew Townsend Ozil Eriksen Redmond
    Kane Lukaku Giroud

Risky with no Ibrahimovic or Aguero... however I feel the team is quite balanced.

Aaahh Gabriel! Do you really want to travel down that awful road? Tough fixture for Arsenals defence

Team is balanced, but Aguero/De Bruyne/both a must for me

    Foster//
    Shaw // Baines // Friend
De Bruyne // Firmino // Fabregas // Townsend
    Aguero // Vardy // Wilson

Subs: Jak // Leko // Mee // Taylor
    0.0 ITB

    What do we think? 🙂

      Nice

Easy enough to turn kdb into Alexis and vardy into Kane. Would rethink Wilson with those early fixtures though. I'm not sold on Baines.

      Would prefer Mkhi in there.

Like that team a lot, not sure about Vardy repeating what he did last year though. Side note, is Townsend nailed on?
