Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

as a stoke fan probably not us as we were shaky towards the end of last season and have been shaky in pre season , pieters could play for the first game against middlesbourough then be benched but thats unnecessary, would bet on swansea for there first two fixtures and wba becuase there normally solid

probably not no , he is quite defensive but the defence has just been shaky i personally would give it time to see how we go unless we sign a good defender

Cabaye is on pens, corners and free kicks tho. With all those palace wingers buzzing around the penalty area they are bound to get there fair share of pens imo. Not to mention how dangerous Palace are from set pieces, which Cabaye will also be taking. Having said that I am tempted by Bojan at the same price. Reclassed as a mid this season plus on pens for Stoke apparantly.

Decent but don't like having only 6 viable players in mid/attack. Only option is continually 4 at the back. It will catch you out.

      Try:

      Valdes to Jaku
      Williams to Fernandez/Naylor
      Eriksen to Siggy/Ayew (great fixtures)
      Grabban upgrade to Gray/Negredo/Rondon/Wilson

Few changes and this came up...

    Cech, Jakupovic
    Shaw, Coleman, Friend, Evans, Wilson
Ozil (Mkhi if Ozil confirmed to miss opening), KDB, Siggy, Ibe, Fletcher
    Kun, Lukaku, Negredo

    0,5 ITB

I will most likely WC after GW3

Is Aguero training yet? Don't know if my mate is playing mind games with me or not saying he may not be fully up to speed for the start of the season.

This is my team so far

    De Gea/Jakupovic

    Friend/Stones/Azpi/Shaw/Francis

    KdB/Mkhi/Redmond/Phillips/Capoue

Aguero/Batshu/7m striker - Provisionally Berahino but I'm unsure about him.

      9 years, 4 months ago

Agüero is training already with the team, KDB is not so would be more worried about him.

Your midfield is a bit weak with both Phillips and Redmond. Double United defence might be too much.

Thanks. Maybe Cech in for De Gea then. That will give me def cover in Man Utd, Man City (Stones if he moves), Chels and Arsenal.

I'll keep an eye on KdB, I'll tweak the mid a little but I like the Mkhi and KdB double at the moment which sucks up 20m.

Nice to see Kane in there. Personally I think Martial may be more explosive than Mkhi... I would go Martial but Mkhi will be great too. Can see it being a bit like Sanchez vs Ozil... both will score heavily, Ozil more consistently but less hauls.

Good team. Wasi may play first match. Cesc possibly on pens.

just sidesteps the ffs template by having terry and kane (who seems to be being overlooked). Not convinced on pool, dodgy start and weren't very good against chelsea this morning. i'd rather have eriksen/alli/tadic eyc.

    Morning all,

First RMT of the new season, I really like the mid-priced midfield options so I've plumped for them and gone heavy in attack. Planning on using WC after GW3.

Terry at the back (Chelsea will be strong defensively and can see him notching a few at the other end) with 2/3 defensive rotation using Souare, Naylor and Friend. Smith just fodder. First three fixtures gives me: WHU WBA STK / HUL sun wat / BUR BOU wba

    De Gea / Jakupovic
    Terry, Souare, Naylor, Friend, Smith.
Siggy, Mirallas (if nailed), Bolasie, KDB (Capoue)
    Aguero, Costa, Vardy

    Cheers

    Schmeichel/ Jakupovic
Pieters/ van Aanholt / Dawson / Dann / Funes Mori
    Tadic / Martial / Eriksen/ Deulofeu / Feghouli
    Agüero/ Long / Batshuayi

Is Bats a punt? Is Eriksen over Ayew wise? Is rotating Feghouli+Long a good strategy (fixtures look solid and Long is a home-bird) ?
I take it asking Martial v MKH will be split. And asking if Kun-less is an option will be scorned at.

Any advice will more than likely be played around with as I can't stop tinkering.

    Thanks

I agree about Deulofeu and possibly Bailly might need changed but I'm pretty confident that Carzola can nail down the CM spot and that Negredo will be the main man for Boro this year I'll definitely be keeping an eye on them though cheers for the input

Yeah i would like Long/Austin but worried i would pick the wrong one, they may not play every game?

            Not convinced by Negredo myself.

Risky starting off with Sagna? Will he start the season after his exploits for France?

What's the subs like? Guessing they're pretty poor when you didn't mention them! 🙂

Not too bad but i would probably replace Hojberg wit Capoue, at least you will have a sub who will play every game.... not sure if Hojberg will play every game?

Don't like Rondon or Ibe and would rather have man Utd or Chelsea defensive cover than Spurs or City but not bad.

      Should make a strong start.
I with you on the Rondon pick, I see goals in those first few weeks.

    Foster - Jaku
    Azpi - Friend - Shaw - Evans - Lenihan
    Mahrez - Mkhi - Tadic - Ayew - Capoue
    Aguero - Lukaku - Long

Thoughts on this draft? Not sure if midfield is potentially too heavy.

What is the consensus on Fabregas for 7.5? I see a lot going for Tadic instead, going on last season I see why, but do we think Conte will get the best out of Fab or better mid-priced out there?

Highly likely but at this moment in time the risk is great than Tadic so I'm going with him.

Foster over mandanda. Will Schlupp be rotated? Dont think Lei defence will be as strong this year. Decent though.

If Albion pay £10m for Schlupp, that guy will not be rotated! Plus Pulis put every Tom, Dick and Harry left back last season! He is in dire need of one. Evans and Brunt are his competition and neither of them are full backs. The fans will be outraged if Schlupp goes there and doesn't start week in, week out. I'm avoiding doubling up on defenders so I think I will stick with mandanda. Maybe Heaton?

      Goals, goals, goals!

Depending on how much you plan to use PVA you could downgrade to Kone for an extra 0.5.

RMT gents. Gone for strong attack and cheap rotating defence until early WC.

    Foster (Jaku)

Jones - Taylor - Friend (Zuniga - Lenihan)

    Martial - Coutinho - Tadic - Ayew

    Aguero - Sturridge - Lukaku

Cheers man. My justification for the cheap defence is that I find clean sheets difficult to predict at the beginning of the season. Also mid-table teams are becoming stronger going forward with the new TV money so I reckon there may be slightly fewer clean sheets to go around. As an Arsenal fan I am worried about our defence and think Pool will score a couple so in with double attack.

Nice differentials but with all liverpools rotation, that teams too rich for my blood. Your team is as weak as my wives tea!

Very strong attack, but also very poor defence. Not too sure about Coutinho though and selecting the right 6.5 striker could do a lot for your team.
