Next up in our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, are Sunderland.

To get underway, we cast an eye over the Wearsiders’ team statistics under Sam Allardyce and compare them to both the rest of the Premier League and the first eight Gameweeks prior to the departure of Dick Advocaat. After that, we then delve into the data to assess their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources as we look to gain insight on their prospects for the season ahead.

After picking up three points – thanks to a trio of draws – in the opening eight Gameweeks, Advocaat’s decision to quit the club saw Big Sam appointed at the helm. The former West Ham boss took a while to steady the ship, though, and helped stave off the threat of relegation by embarking on a run that saw his side lose just twice in the final 14 league fixtures to finish two points ahead of the drop zone.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Just had a look at the ownership figures

Currently the top owned midfielders makes interesting reading

Payet, mkhi and kante make up the top 3 most owned midfielders, with KDB in fifth

    Defence...

    A) Shaw - Fuchs - 5.0 - Friend - 4.0
    B) Shaw - Fuchs - 4.5 - Friend - 4.5

I think he needs Berahino to leave the club for that to happen.

Id be surprised if Pulis gave him many games this season unless his hand is forced i.e. Berahino leaving and no other options.

I think a certain 5.5m midfielder might prove to be the bargain of the season who is a personal favourite for me - Max Gradel. The pacy left winger joined Bournemouth from St.Etienne last summer for a reported €10,00 million fee. He had a bright start to the season with 2 assists in the third gameweek against West Ham. Unfortunately , he was injured in the very next fixture against Leicester with a Cruciate Ligament Rupture and returned only in GW 27. He went on the assist 3 more and score one goal in the remaining gameweeks , slowly recovering from his injury. A look into the statistics show that Gradel averages a goal or an assist every two games in the league but its his underlying statistics which catch the eye. Gradel averaged 1.8 shots per 90 minutes with 1.2 of those coming from inside the box. He also averaged one key pass per 90 minutes. Although these statistics look far from spectacular , it is his numbers from Ligue 1 in 13/14 and 14/15 which are intriguing to say the least.

Gradel is a natural goal-scorer and it is shown by his 14/15 and 13/14 totals. He finished the 14/15 campaign with 17 goals and 4 assists for St.Etienne. His underlying statistics were impressive as well as he averaged 4.2 shots per games with 2.4 of those coming from inside the box. He further created 2 chances per 90 minutes , which unfortunately didn't reflect in his assists total (only 4 assists). Comparing this to all PL midfielders last season , Gradel is ranked second in shot per 90 minutes (after Coutinho - 5 per 90).

In spite of an injury affected 13/14 season campaign, Gradel averaged a goal or assist every 100 minutes (5 goals 5 assists in 1000 minutes). A look into his underlying statistics reveal that he averaged 2.2 chances created per 90 minutes and 2.8 shots per 90 (1.9 from inside the box).

Further , a regular poster on here - Berbinho Forehead has recently made a spreadsheet ranking all attackers in the Premier League - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dxPHJST97iORVfVzcnrMijDtuOkmEMMxMKWSGii7X1s/edit?usp=sharing2

Gradel is ranked THIRD in the non-PL stats. Yes , Ligue 1 is comparatively an easier league but that has not stopped the likes of Payet , Martial , Ayew etc. from doing well last season. Also , worth noting that Gradel's role in Bournemouth is a bit different to his St.Etienne days and he might play as a winger in a 4-4-2 formation but his statistics look far too good for a 5.5m midfielder to me. He is currently my team's 4th midfielder (with a 4.5m 5th mid) and he is going nowhere. 🙂

    2. Piggs Boson
      • 14 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

Friend is the preferred option, if you decide to get one.

"regarded by many as the best left-back in the Championship, the £100,000 signing from Doncaster is a fans’ favourite. “Handsome George” suffered a dip in performance last season but is still considered a superb prospect. An aggressive, intelligent reader of the game, Friend registered 2.5 interceptions per match with 2.3 tackles won. He can also bomb forward to provide width, although his end product could be better. An assured starter and a potential ever-present, Friend could challenge Ayala for bonus potential if he can improve his attacking output."

It is way too early to have a set team, many things (including your team) are going to change before the first GW. Pending transfers and all of that. I have simply put the values in the places I want... the names are irrelevant for now.

Looks pretty sexy, similar to what I have at the minute. Silva's proneness to pass the ball even when he could shoot annoys me, so I'm not a particular fan of his fantasy wise.

I'm not too keen on planning on early wildcards, who knows if they'll come in handy in a late double gameweek like this past season ( which backfired a bit with Liverpool rotating though)

Firmino, Mane on form will be gold
      Lanzini when fit
      Grays not nailed
      Love Alli

Willian (7.5) vs Hazard (10.0) - tempting, but probably wait and see
      Batshuayi (9.0) vs Costa (9.5) - 0.5 difference won't be worth it
Ozil (9.5) vs Sanchez (11.0) - Ozil probably
Silva (9.0) vs De Bruyne (10.5) - I like Silva to start with, you'll never captain KDB if you have Kun
Rooney (9.0) vs Ibrahimovic (11.5) - M&M are better picks
Coutinho (8.0) vs Firmino (8.5) vs Mane (9.0) - Firmino every day
Feghouli (5.5) vs Payet (9.5) - Is this really a comparison?
      Gray (5.0 vs Mahrez (9.5) - Ditto
      Alli (8.5) vs Kane (11.0) - Alli

You missed Erikson (8.5) vs Lamela (7.0)

Lol sorry I should have said my point of this post wasn't to pick one from each duo, but will the cheaper alternative prove better value (i.e. points per 0.5m) than the more expensive outlet?

Ozil (9.5) vs Sanchez (11.0) = toss up
Silva (9.0) vs De Bruyne (10.5) = need to see Pep's line up
Rooney (9.0) vs Ibrahimovic (11.5) = Ibra easily
Coutinho (8.0) vs Firmino (8.5) vs Mane (9.0) = Firm or Mane
Feghouli (5.5) vs Payet (9.5) = need to see line ups
      Gray (5.0 vs Mahrez (9.5) = again
Alli (8.5) vs Kane (11.0) = Kane just

I honestly can't understand why Mane is more expensive than Firmino... No way there's any point in getting Mane this season I think, even at 8m last season he was a bit too on/off.... He didn't really score well at all during the first half of the season I remember correctly.... But at 9m and Cou at 8m and Firmino at 8.5m... No way....

    Thoughts?

    Courtois
Walker Wolly Cedric (or other 5.0) shaw
    KDB Martial Ayew
    Kun Lukaku Wilson

    Jaku Gradel Kightly Paredes

If not Cedric who's the best 5.0 option in defense?

Just watched a highlight reel for Gradel, besides falling down a lot when any contact is made, he seems to be taking a few free kicks and corners for Saint-Etienne. Either way, assist potential all round.

He reminds of a less Dale-Wintonesque Sterling.
