After last week’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, our Projections and Rate My Team tools have been updated with initial numbers in our Members Area and are now live.

Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the summer friendlies reveal more on likely starting lineups and tactics.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of the tool and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires Membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for Members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score in each Gameweek.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data.

When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account and fed into the algorithm.

When will these Projections be updated?
We will update the projections almost each day in the pre-season. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season – again, almost on a daily basis, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. Major updates are made on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves.

The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. You have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers.

How Accurate is Rate My Team?
We’re not going to try and claim that Rate My Team is X% accurate – we’ve never attempted to track a figure, focusing our efforts on keeping the tool up to date to serve those who use it.

Instead what we will say is that the tool was used on a weekly basis by Fantasy Football Scout member Ed Masters who finished third in the FPL last season – check out his interview with us here.

Before that, both Tom Fenley and Simon March were members of Fantasy Football Scout and also used Rate My Team – Tom and Simon were FPL champions in 2014/15 and 2013/14.

We’ve previously created a number of movies, together with the creator of Rate My Team Chris Atkinson, which explain the tools in full detail. You can view these below.

An interesting new metric for footballers

    http://www.espn.in/football/german-bundesliga/10/blog/post/2915634/stefan-reinartz-new-metric-packing-helps-us-understand-effective-passing

With an average of 82 opponents taken out in each game, Real Madrid's Toni Kroos was the most effective passer at the Euros, according to Reinartz. Switzerland's Granit Xhaka amassed the fifth-best Packing rate (55 opponents, on average), which could explain why he was valued so highly by Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger, who sanctioned a €45 million transfer from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

I really like the RMT feature dont stress too much on it but helps with benching headaches ect

Only issue this year I can see is that you are significantly underestimating Hazard and Snodgrass' points 😉

Talk to me about Luke Shaw and why he's so popular a pick... I'm not saying he's not good value (he's the only premium defender I'd want) but I just wanna hear your thoughts on him.

He has (bou, SOU, hul, MCI, wat, LEI)..

I can see a clean sheet in the Hull game, and maybe one against Southampton or Watford, but apart from that it looks ropey enough in terms of clean sheets (although I expect United to win most of those games).

He also has a history of very few attacking returns.. (3 assists, 0 goals)

He looked great before his injury last year but I'm just wondering if he's being overhyped?

Price mixed with Mourinho as manager, plus although he doesn't get many assists he does tend to get forward a lot. Looked brilliant at the start of last season.

He's in my team mostly due to red-tinted glasses, though. Love the lad.

I think that's a big part of it, the "Mourinho effect". However I'd throw out the caveat that Mourinho isn't actually as regularly defensive as he's made out to be.. He has absolutely no problem parking the bus against teams like Suarez' Liverpool, or Messi's Barca, but against Bournemouth, Southampton, Hull.. I can't see it. I can see him trying to blow away all of the defensive, cagey aspects of LVG's "philoshofee" in the first few games..

He DID look amazing back at the beginning of last season though you're right. Could be in line for much better attacking returns.

Those are just the reasons I think he's popular, not necessarily my opinions. I'm not sure if our defensive record will be as good as last year, but a fit and in-form Shaw should have potential for a good amount of points.

I like starting the season with at least a couple of Utd players because everyone wants their own team's players to do well, but I've no problem selling them off when they don't live up to the hype! I went most of last season without, other than Darmian right at the beginning and King Dave + Martial for the DGWs 😎

Ibra is the one player I'm actually going with my head over my heart on.

Would LOVE to have him, but my midfield just looks lacking with him up front. Honestly think Lukaku (yes, really!) will keep up with him points-wise, at least for the start of the season.

Fingers crossed I'm proved wrong and forced into an early WC though!

I did have him but downgraded to Phil Jones, might go back to Shaw before GW1 though.

But I want a United defender because Jose tends to like clean sheets and United under LvG were very capable of a clean sheet too

I did 🙂 was just about to reply!

Again, I think you're giving Mourinho too much credit in terms of his defences. He was rarely defensive at Madrid and we all know how Chelsea's defence was last season.. He has no problem shutting up shop to get the win but I can't see that at the very start of his tenure, and would mainly be against the tough teams that you might not expect a CS from..

With regards to Shaw's attacking returns, he did look amazing last season, bombing forward to great effect, but at the end of the day he has 3 assists and 0 goals in 4 years..

He is only 5.5! He is cheap what do you really expect from him? Plus he was injured for virtually the whole of last season

I see him as a good budget way into a decent defence with some potential. Not as a premium pick I expect to be banging them in every week.

Full backs did tend to do OK at Chelsea though didn't they under him?

          1. Irish Madridista ⭐

For an extra million over options like McAuley / Friend / NTaylor / Koné etc, I'd want an assurance of either regular CS potential or semi regular attacking potential, so if he starts getting assists / goals he'll be a steal, but I don't see him as essential as his ownership% would suggest at the moment 🙂

I'm going with just 4.5 defenders so was hoping someone could convince me to shell out extra for him but I'm not convinced.. Yet..

Full backs DID do well at Chelsea, great point, maybe this will be Shaw's breakthrough year where he steps up a level?

No is isn't essential by any means. IMO nobody ever is (especially defenders) I just think 5.5 is cheap for a defender in a side you would be expecting to push at the top end of the league.

Not trying to big him up at all. I don't really buy in to a lot of hype round here. He is an option that is all. No defenders can guarantee clean sheets after all.

We can but dream that he is this seasons Ivan!

Oh I know don't worry 🙂 sorry I didn't mean to sound argumentative, just trying to wrap my head around how best to set up defence meself! I tend to play devil's advocate a bit too often on here 😳

He's definitely a good option.. I might look at Coleman too though.. Purely for patriotic reasoning 😛

You can make an argument for him or Baines too. I m toying with having Shaw/Baines or Coleman/Gabriel as a first choice defensive 3. I think they are all good value for what they bring to the side.

Of course the fact that Shaw has a high ownership may play against you. People are always transfer happy early on and a high ownership player not performing will drop quicker in value. (Especially with a more difficult GW2 fixture coming)

As a United fan, I kinda agree with you. I think it will take some time for United to settle defensively, and as you point out, none of those fixtures (bar maybe hul/wat) is "guaranteed" CS. Further, I reckon you cannot hope for much more than a single assist as well over those matches.

I do believe, however, that a MUFC defender would be important/essential at a later point of the season.

Doubt many are hoping for big offensive returns out of him. You could probably do better with £5.5 tho!

I've taken Shaw out now to free up funds. Mourinho doesn't have a good early record of clean sheets
      2013-14: 2 cleanies in first 10 matches
      2014-15: 3 cleanies in first 10 matches
      2015-16: 3 cleanies in first 10 matches

I agree with you. If anything, I think we will see a free-flowing Man Utd the first half of the season, but not unlikely that they will shape up in the second half, especially if they are in the running for the title (or at least CL-spot).

I think he provides a route into a Jose defence. DDG, is the only other similar proced option who looks assured of his place in that defence at that price but DDG probably wont make as many saves in a game.
      Reasons to 'Shaw':
Assured of role (as much as can be)
Cheaper than the other starter, Smalling
Potentially better pick than DDG for attacking returns.

I see your hesitation but hes the only viable United player from Uniteds defence

    How does this team look?

    Heaton (Foster)
Friend - Terry - Cedric (Fernandez, Koné)
    Hazard - Mkhi - Mahrez - Arnautovic(if he's going to Everton) (Höjbjerg)
    Long/Austin - Aguero - Rondon

I find it quite balanced, although maybe a bit short up front.

Poor GK/Defence but front 8 looks good imo ... try to downgrade one from mahrez haz mkh to upgrade GK/Defence or even your third striker (Rondon)

The GK/Defence rotates quite nice the first few fixtures actually. I also think of wildcarding pretty early.

More worried about the strikers as you point out. But I'd really like those three in the midfield. Could be an option to downgrade Arnautovic into 5,5 mid as well.

          I would consider arnie or Mahrez→Siggy / Tadic +
Rondon or 6.5 →Benteke if he goes to Palace too

not sure it was that derisory a bid. A player is only worth what someone is willing to pay, and asking prices can be way out of whack with other clubs valuations

€35m for a player that has only played in France, with a record of a goal every 2.5 games. Sounds more than enough to me.

Sure those stats look bad when you bundle everything together under the most superficial stat of "games" and only counting players' value in goals. You're including his early seasons when he played on flank and mostly as a sub.

Only since 2013/2014 he has played regularly as a CF. Since then (still counting many matches as a winger):

            - consistent and consistently improving goals + assists rate over 0.7/90 (in France and Europe combined)
            - NPG every 1,5 matches last two seasons
            - consistently over 20% conversion rate of non-penalty shots 3 seasons in a row, and that could be loudly improved if he stopped taking so many long shots, although his conversion rate out of box is sensational 8%, or in other words Aguero level.
            - added to the great pressing and strong passing game, also improving by year.

Extremely nice package right there, well worth the money asked in the current inflated market where a defender with one half full season under him costs €38M.

Some interesting potential differentials emerging (less than 5% ownership)

Interesting to see a number of decent Southampton assets being overlooked. Forster, Bertrand, Redmond, Tadic, Austin?

Bolasie and Rondon have a good set of opening fixtures.

    Forster SOU (4.7%)
    Gomes WAT (3.7%)

    Souare CRY (4.6%)
    Terry CHE (4.3%)
    Bertrand SOU (4.3%)
    Taylor SWA (4%)
    Darmian MUN (3.6%)

    Bolasie CRY (4.7%)
    Redmond SOU (4.5%) & Tadic SOU (4.2%)
    Silva MCY (3.7%)
    Deulofeu EVE (2.2%)

    Austin SOU (3%)
    Rondon WBA (2.9%)

That's the problem. Can't see any trusted attacker worth getting. Plus Mou is inherently defensive so I can't see lots of goals from Man U

"Mou is inherently defensive", I disagree, I think this is a myth. I currently have Ibra but he's no doubt overpriced. Strongly considering Martial too.. you could get Willian for Hazard (play the same position essentially) and then change Townsend for Martial/Mkhit? If you're gut is telling you no United though then follow it 🙂 I just can't see Bournemouth keeping them at bay.

            It is a myth.

Mourinho knows how to organise a team defensively and doesn't like conceding any goals. That doesn't mean he's inherently defensive. Ferguson knew how to organise a team defensively and didn't like conceding either.

I might try and factor MK in for a switch. Like the idea of haz and KdB in from the start as they are easy to downgrade but harder to transfer in if they explode and rise in price

            1. Irish Madridista ⭐
              • 15 Years
              9 years, 7 months ago

Yep good point, that's the main reason I have Ibra, I'm terrified he'll hit the ground running and I'd have to destroy my team to get him (I'd definitely want him, too big a fan of his).

There's always Rooney as the most unpopular pick at 9.0 instead of Lukaku who has Deulofeu / Mirallas / Barks as "cover"... That might not be a good idea though.

Fair enough, go with what ya have, tis a nice team 🙂
