David Moyes wins his first match in charge at Sunderland, Jordan Mutch continues Crystal Palace’ unbeaten summer run and Middlesbrough cruise to victory in the Spanish sun.

Here’s the latest from a low-key day of action…

Stade Nyonnais 0 Sunderland 2

Two penalties from Duncan Watmore handed David Moyes his first win as the new Sunderland manager blooded eight Academy players.

Watmore, priced at 5.0 and listed as a midfielder in the official Fantasy Premier League game, was used up front as Jermain Defoe missed the match with a niggle.

As highlighted in our Budget Midfielder article, Watmore could offer great value if he is deployed in advanced positions by Moyes, and he did his case for a forward berth no harm in Switzerland.

He earned the first penalty himself and slotted home the second just before half-time following a foul on George Honeyman.

Moyes recalled Billy Jones and Lee Cattermole after they recovered from minor knocks and fielded Jack Rodwell as a makeshift centre-half, but otherwise used his more senior players sparingly in the hot Alpine conditions.

Sunderland XI: Mannone, Jones, Ledger, Rodwell (J Robson 46), T Robson (Borini 76), Cattermole (N’Zogbia 46), E Robson, Honeyman (Van Aaanholt 76), Gooch (Khazri 76), Watmore (Asoro 64), Greenwood (Lens 76).

Colchester United 0 Crystal Palace 1

Jordan Mutch’s sweet strike from a Jason Puncheon assist made it three straight pre-season wins for Palace.

Alan Pardew gave 20 players a run-out and, having trialled a 3-5-2 in the previous friendly, opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation with Connor Wickham as the lone striker supported by Andros Townsend, Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie, who managed just under 60 minutes in his first start of the summer.

Mutch and Hiram Boateng anchored the midfield and Pardew gave Alex McCarthy the full 90 minutes in goal.

Wilfried Zaha, James Tomkins, Bakary Sako and James McArthur all missed out, with Pardew confirming pre-match:

”They just have minor knocks that they’re not really ready for the game, so we’ll see how they are on Wednesday ahead of Wimbledon.”

Crystal Palace XI: McCarthy, Ward, Dann (Kelly 70), Delaney (Croll 70), Fryers (Binnom-Williams 78), Boateng (Jedinak 59), Mutch (Ladapo 85), Puncheon (Lee 59), Bolasie (Kaikai 59), Townsend (Berkeley-Agyepong 70), Wickham (Campbell 45).

Middlesbrough 2 Al-Ahli 0

Middlesbrough ended their time in southern Spain with a 2-0 win over Saudi champions Al-Ahli.

Second half goals from David Nugent and a fine individual strike from Julien de Sart sealed the victory for Aitor Karanka’s team.

Viktor Fischer provided the assist for Nugent’s goal, with Karanka again using the Danish international winger in the No10 position, although he later partnered Nugent in attack.

Eleven changes were made for the final 20 minutes, with Alvaro Negredo and Jordan Rhodes used up front, and Karanka also experimented by deploying left winger Adam Reach as a full-back as he seeks cover for first-choice left back George Friend.

The coach was happy enough with his side’s Spanish trip, saying:

“We have three weeks to fix one or two things. We still need players like Dani Ayala to recover – I don’t think Grant (Leadbitter) will be ready – but it’s good that we have three weeks to work at home.”

Centre-half Ayala, who has not featured in pre-season due to an ankle injury, is still ‘a week to 10 days’ away from selection, Karanka added.

Middlesbrough XI: Konstantopoulos (Mejias 70), Nsue (Barragan 70), Baptiste (Morris 70), Jackson (Gibson 70), Reach (Friend 70), Forshaw (Clayton 70), De Sart (de Roon 70), Stuani (Ramirez 70), Fischer (Negredo 70), De Pena (Adomah 70), Nugent (Rhodes 70).

My general rules for GW1 are go with 14/15 100% nailed on players, preferably those that I've seen play in this league before..

Without any significant preseason games to go on there's no way of knowing if Nolito will start GW1.. He says he's been promised first team football but still a big risk to start week 1 for me and even then think he'll be rotating and coming off reguarly imo..

Way too big a risk for me.

But would he start alongsdie Aguero?

Once CL kicks in his chances of playing increase a lot. As he did so well last season I think we will see him and Aguero rotated a lot more this season.

          1. Souare - will change
          2. Bojan - agree, but not many exciting options for 6m
          3. Watson to Capoue - bench fodder position, so doable
          4. Big fan of Callum Wilson here - he is gonna explode this season.

    Tottenham 1⃣️-2⃣️ Juventus match report

    ⭐ players: Wanyama, Lamela

    Notes
    - The first 60 minutes were very disappointing from Spurs both defensively and offensively. Might have had only one shot on goal and it was a wide miss. Defence was expected to be poor; not consisting of one first-team player and Juventus had a strong enough attack.
    - Wanyama worked hard throughout the game putting in heavy albeit sometimes risky challenges to try and break up the play and win possession. Won the ball in midfield for Lamela’s goal and slipped in a great pass for the assist.
    - Lamela tried hard to bring Spurs back into the game with his goal, can’t fault his efforts.
    - Spurs have some good youth players in their ranks, still raw but lots of potential there if they can get experience.

Tottenham 1st half (4-2-3-1): Vorm; Trippier, Ball, Carter-Vickers, Miller; Mason (C), Wanyama; Son, Carroll, Chadli; Janssen.

6’’ Dominic Ball is put under pressure from a backpass and takes a bad touch that Juventus latch onto. Pereyra passes to Dyzbala and he finished to the bottom right past Vorm. ⚽
14’’ Good save from Vorm who palms the ball over for a corner. ♜
15’’ The resulting corner is taken and after a terrible clearance, the ball is whipped into the middle by Pjanic that finds the head of Benatia who doubles the lead. ⚽
29’’ First chance on goal for Spurs as Carroll crosses a ball to Son who heads wide by a good bit.

Tottenham 2nd half (4-2-3-1): Vorm; Trippier, Ball, Carter-Vickers, Yedlin; Winks, Wanyama; Onomah, Carroll, Lamela; Janssen.

56’’ Janssen sets up Lamela who shoots from the edge of the box and has his shot deflected narrowly by the post.
63’’ Trippier, Carroll, Janssen subbed for Walkes, Edwards, Harrison. ↩️
67’’ Wanyama intercepts a ball in midfield and feeds Lamela who finishes low to the bottom corner from just outside the box. Great finish. ⚽
76’’ Great ball up from Yedlin to find Edwards in the penalty area but he can’t control it to get a shot away and loses possession.
79’’ Ball subbed for Amos. ↩️
80’’ Lamela hits a strong shot from inside the box that is saved from Neto.
91’’ Lamela threads an excellent pass through to Harrison in the box who readjusts himself and shoots. Neto makes a strong save to deny him.
93’’ Winks floats a great ball to the back post but the header from Harrison deadens the ball into the air for Neto to catch.

    Match rating: ★★★★☆☆☆☆☆☆

Didn't see the game but he's been in my team since I set my team up on Sunday. Good showing from him apparently.

Will WC after GW3, how's this looking?

    Foster | Mannone
    Shaw | Taylor | Friend | McAuley | Byram
    Hazard | Mahrez | Mkhitaryan | Ayew | Mendy
    Aguero | Lukaku | 4.5 bench fodder

Tempted by Martial over Mkh, also the moves proposed for Arnautovic, Benteke or Chadli could tempt me into changes.

Mendy is a DM, downgrade Mannone Bryam and upgrade Mendy

Can't downgrade Byram, no-one lower priced will play a game. an extra .5 won't help me upgrade Mendy. He will play every game for us, he is a lot less like Kante than has been reported. A passer, not a ball winner; best 4.5 mid option IMO.

Assuming that Byram will play somewhere in the West Ham back-line now that Cresswell is out long term.

What's happened to the FPL Player List Analysis articles ?. We we're getting them daily, but there's been nothing since the 23rd (Saturday). Aren't any of the higher priced mids or forwards worth getting ?

First RMT since the the day it went live. How does this look for Wildcard GW3 strategy?

    Foster (Jakupovic)
    Shaw / Friend / McAuley / N. Taylor / 4.0
    Hazard / Mkhi / Firmino / Siggy / 4.5
    Aguero / Lukaku / 6.5

Really want to find room for Mahrez. Any ideas?

Might be a good idea. I have faith in Firmino, but I guess I can draft him in at a later point.

if you really want Mahrez I guess you can downgrade Siggy to Townsend and upgrade Firmino to Mahrez.

        Firmino/Siggy

        vs

        Mahrez/Townsend

Might not be a bad idea to go for the second one.

obviously the easiest way is a straight swap for mkhi/haz, whichever you prefer less.
      alternatively lukaku > 6.5
      defence is already light
