Earlier this month, Southampton made Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg their second signing of the summer following the arrival of Nathan Redmond from Norwich. The 20-year-old joins from Bayern Munich for an undisclosed fee, reportedly worth £12 million, and has penned a five-year contract at St Mary’s.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Hojbjerg revealed talks with new Saints boss Claude Puel helped make the decision to join Southampton an easy one:

“I spoke with the manager and it was very positive in his way of analysing my style and the club. Also, his style was very clear and I like that. I like it when somebody has a style that they are clear about and they know what they want as it’s easier to follow and be part of.”

The History

Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Hojbjerg started his youth career at BK Skjold and F.C Copenhagen, before joining up with Brondby at the age of 14.

Having been named Danish Under 17 Player of the Year in 2011, the midfielder joined Bayern Munich a year later, and after making his debut for the second team in 2012, was handed his professional debut as a substitute against FC Nurnberg in April 2013. He finished the 2012/13 campaign having made two league appearances, while he scored eight goals and registered one assist in 30 matches for the reserves.

Hojbjerg made seven Bundesliga appearances in 2013/14, claiming one assist, while he played 14 times for the reserves, scoring four goals and providing a single assist.

In order to gain more first-team experience, Hojbjerg was sent out on loan to fellow Bundesliga side FC Augsburg in January 2015. The Dane made 16 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and supplying three assists.

Last season, the midfielder joined Schalke 04 on a season-long loan. After initially struggling to command a regular starting berth, he chalked up 30 appearances in all competitions, claiming two assists.

After representing his country at every youth level from Under 16 to Under 21, scoring 12 goals in 38 appearances, Hojbjerg made his senior debut against Sweden in May 2014. He has played 16 times for Denmark and has scored one goal.

The Prospects

During pre-season so far, Puel has mainly utilised a midfield diamond and has occasionally trialled a 4-3-3 – in either set-up, Hojbjerg looks likely to be stationed in a defensive midfield role following the departure of Victor Wanyama to Tottenham.

The Danish international has sometimes played further forward during his career, though, and could play on the side of a diamond, with neither Jordy Clasie or Oriol Romeu offering any real threat.

Standing at 6ft 1in, Højbjerg offers a strong presence in the middle of the park, and has good technical ability in terms of his passing, dribbling and finishing, particularly from long range. His positioning as a defensive midfield player is also impressive, and he registered an interception every 24 minutes for Schalke last season, better than Clasie (27.8), Wanyama (38) and Romeu (43.1). Of all four players, Romeu led the way for successful tackles last term with one every 30.2 minutes, ahead of Wanyama (36.2), Hojbjerg (38.6) and Clasie (42.9).

Hojbjerg certainly looks capable of filling the void left by Wanyama, then, and while he hardly carries a significant attacking threat, he did average a shot every 57.9 minutes last season, better than Romeu (61.6), Wanyama (84.5) and Clasie (113.4).

The former Bayern midfielder only managed a key pass every 182 minutes last term, though, mainly due to featuring in a deep-lying midfield position. Nonetheless, an 87.4% successful pass rate is indicative of his excellent distribution.

While a defensive midfield player wouldn’t normally be of huge interest for Fantasy managers, Hojbjerg’s price of 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) has brought him firmly onto our radars, with the Dane currently sat in 4.1% of squads.

He’s currently only second to West Brom’s Darren Fletcher (14.4%) for ownership in FPL among 4.5-priced midfielders, and, having impressed on his first start against FC Twente, could well establish a regular starting role at St Mary’s.

He’ll be competing with the likes of Clasie and Romeu for a place in Puel’s XI, while Steven Davis and James Ward-Prowse are slightly more attack-minded midfield players who could operate on the sides of a diamond.

Hojbjerg was on the bench for today’s friendly with FC Groningen and introduced at half-time. Both Clasie and Romeu were handed starts in the Saints’ engine room, with Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond also in the starting XI.

The Saints’ opening fixtures offer up some plum home ties (WAT, SUN, SWA, BUR) over the opening eight Gameweeks, though there’s no doubt that Dusan Tadic (7.5) and, to a lesser extent, Redmond (6.0) have a greater potential for attacking hauls.

Going on his output so far, Hojbjerg looks best utilised as a bench-warner initially until we get an idea of Southampton’s Fantasy prospects under their new manager. The youngest player ever to represent Bayern in the Bundesliga, there’s no denying the new boy has a touch of class and if Puel affords him the platform to flourish, we’ll be keeping a keen eye on his potential as the campaign unfolds.

    Shameless Repost

Well after much tinkering and listening to advice from fellow managers on this site this is my latest draft which I feel quite confident on

    Foster/Jaku

    Shaw/Friend/McAuley/Souare/Taylor

    Mahrez/Mkhitaryan/Alli/Ayew/Lekko

    Aguero/Batshuayi/Long

I recognize my backline is kind of weak but this allows me to minimize risk in midfield by being able to have Alli and Ayew as my 3rd and 4th mids while monitoring the cheapies for a few weeks

Also Batshy can become Lukaku if I feel he is not nailed

    Thoughts would be much appreciated.

I think the 6.5 strikers are a matter of preference to be honest. They each have their pros and cons but at the end of the day there are that many it is easy to switch to whichever looks to be performing best early on.

Personally I'm on Gray at the moment in the hope that Burnley score goals. He really is a cracking player.

He just makes the right decisions. He loves keeping a second transfer. He'll happily let non-playing players stagnate on his bench rather than waste a transfer, which I never do. These things I do know.

ROTATION FOR BORING STATTOS LIKE ME

If you take the season ticker and order it by fixture difficulty (clean sheets) on a week by week basis, you'll get a rank for each team e.g. in week 1, you might say that Sunderland has the least chance of a clean sheet and Stoke has the best chance of a clean sheet.

I don't necessarily agree with the fixture ticker, but members obviously have the ability to amend the fixture ticker using their own values.

I have taken all of this data for the first 19 gameweeks, with a view to working out how you can get the best combination over X weeks, for Y price.

The purpose of this post is to share some interesting combinations for those looking to wildcard early. I haven't detailed all of the fixtures; I advise you to stick these into your season tickers and see if any look interesting.

    SCENARIOS

    a) I plan to wildcard during the first international break and want to spend as little as possible:

    BOU | CPL | SWA | SUN | WBA

    b) I plan to wildcard during the first international break and want the best combination possible:

    CHE | CPL | LIV | SWA | WBA

    c) I plan to hang on a bit longer, but still want to keep things as cheap as possible:

    CPL | STK | SUN | WBA | WHM

    DISCLAIMER

I haven't decided whether I'll be optimising my team for an early wildcard, or going with a traditional setup of two big hitters and three-way rotation. In any case, this was an interesting bit of analysis and I hope you find it useful. PLEASE VOTE if you would like any further fixture analysis.

It's not perfect, but does create some interesting options for early WC'ers.

An example of a team for the first three weeks only:

      Foster | 4.0M
      Francis | Souare | Taylor | Kone | McAuley
      Hazard | Silva | Sigurdsson | Townsend | 4.5M
      Aguero | Ibrahimovic | Rondon

I want United attack, but am loathed to pay 11.5 for Ibra when I plan not to captain him. Martial looks overpriced and Mkhi is unpredictable in the Prem. Rooney will play in attack, is on pens and could be a great differential. It's a gamble though, no doubt.

Yeah that's obviously the biggest risk in this draft. He could be a bargain, but he could also just be like the last two years... As explained above I'm not a fan of bringing in an 11.5m striker who I don't intend to captain.

Still dithering about on Firmino. Feels like he / their attack is sort of fixture proof given how well they perform against top sides on the counter.

I feel like Vardy is being seriously overlooked on here....

I'm considering Vardy, but it means dropping Mahrez. Price means he represents better value for me. Just.

I'd rather Vardy over Mahrez especially with pens back in his locker. Think he should still be consistent source of points at least until UCL starts up. Vardy seems so much more reliable than anyone in the 8m-10m bracket....whereas I see loads of 8.5-9.5 mids I'd be comfortable with.

Upgraded the midfield at the cost of an attacker and may end up AOAing the first GW.

Foster/Heaton - toss-up on the GK, but probably Heaton because it's a home match
Valencia | Friend (Evans, Francis, Kone - assuming he goes to Everton with Stones heading to MCI, otherwise I need a different 4.5)
    Hazard | Siggy | Redmond | Eriksen | Townsend
    Aguero (c) | Grabban | Ibra (v)

Hello FFS famila. Playing around, trying to find a team with Kun and Ibra and Miki that's still somewhat balanced.

    Foster, Jaku
    Shaw, Friend, Souare, Francis, Fernandez
    Miki, Eriksen, Ayew, Deulofeu, Hojbjerg
    Kun, Ibra, Long

    - Defense is cheap but rotates perfectly.
    - Long could be Benteke if he goes to CP
    - 0.5 left ITB so could upgrade a 4.5 to Stones if he goes to City
    - Likely WC in GW4, but not specifically planning it.

    Any good?

    1. Walsh
      • 12 Years
      10 years, 1 month ago

Don't love the idea of both Ibra and Mkhit in the same team at least for GW1. I think just one is enough at least to see how they settle and what's what with them. Everything else looks good to me though. Not sure I'd want a Bournemouth defender regardless of how nicely their on paper fixture looks - can't see them keeping many cleans.

Terry my favorite 5.5 in the game. Still think Fuchs is a good pick though...but I'm not sure the baps are enough to go with him over one of the 5.0 options. Every .5 counts 🙂

I thought he did a lot of good work breaking up attacks myself last year.

Although Morgan and Huth played well, Kante was good at stopping anyone running at them or getting space for a shot.

Reckon all Leicester's defenders will miss him in the long term.

Mrs is 7 hours away. She is visa less at the moment so decamped in her native country until the Irish immigration pull their finger out. This si the best time to talk to her.

Philippines. I didn't buy her of the Internet as most think. I met her when I was working and living there.

Nothing looks imminent. Best case I think is if we plump the extra blood money for Peace to get Berahino. Benteke incoming seems all but dead to me.

No, Benteke is very much alive. Only concern is if we play hard ball too much a better team will come in and take him.

Anyone have a nugget of wisdom to offer?

    Valdes (Jakupovic)
    Shaw Azpi Naughton (Pieters Smith)
    Mahrez Mkhitaryan Hazard Townsend Lamela
    Aguero Gray (Diomande)

    Thank you kindly.

Not sure how nailed Naughton is and don't love Smith. Not a fan of 352 but I do like the team in general. Like the Lamela shout but it is annoying how he seems to play 70' only.

You prefer Naylor? I can;t see Kyle not being nailed and he's always got good attacking threat. Neil was great at the euros though.

Idk - Kingsley got some minutes last year. Naughton probably less competition but not sure. Honestly, Swansea fixtures are so ridiculously bad after the first two I'd look elsewhere. You'd bench for 6 straight weeks. No point in having a defender from them in my opinion.

Yeah I'd left Swansea out for that exact reason, but then had an epiphany that I could just save 0.5 and offload him for Gabriel gw3 (or just wildcard if everything's gone to poo), seems to coincide nicely.

Smith is just my favorite 4.0 option obv. I actually have a spare 0.5 but I'd prefer to have wiggle room if anyone flops/impresses

Hard to say - there's always a surprise package at the start of most seasons who wrecks this kind of analysis.

My hunch would be to spread the risk at this stage.
