Earlier this month, Southampton made Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg their second signing of the summer following the arrival of Nathan Redmond from Norwich. The 20-year-old joins from Bayern Munich for an undisclosed fee, reportedly worth £12 million, and has penned a five-year contract at St Mary’s.

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, Hojbjerg revealed talks with new Saints boss Claude Puel helped make the decision to join Southampton an easy one:

“I spoke with the manager and it was very positive in his way of analysing my style and the club. Also, his style was very clear and I like that. I like it when somebody has a style that they are clear about and they know what they want as it’s easier to follow and be part of.”

The History

Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Hojbjerg started his youth career at BK Skjold and F.C Copenhagen, before joining up with Brondby at the age of 14.

Having been named Danish Under 17 Player of the Year in 2011, the midfielder joined Bayern Munich a year later, and after making his debut for the second team in 2012, was handed his professional debut as a substitute against FC Nurnberg in April 2013. He finished the 2012/13 campaign having made two league appearances, while he scored eight goals and registered one assist in 30 matches for the reserves.

Hojbjerg made seven Bundesliga appearances in 2013/14, claiming one assist, while he played 14 times for the reserves, scoring four goals and providing a single assist.

In order to gain more first-team experience, Hojbjerg was sent out on loan to fellow Bundesliga side FC Augsburg in January 2015. The Dane made 16 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and supplying three assists.

Last season, the midfielder joined Schalke 04 on a season-long loan. After initially struggling to command a regular starting berth, he chalked up 30 appearances in all competitions, claiming two assists.

After representing his country at every youth level from Under 16 to Under 21, scoring 12 goals in 38 appearances, Hojbjerg made his senior debut against Sweden in May 2014. He has played 16 times for Denmark and has scored one goal.

The Prospects

During pre-season so far, Puel has mainly utilised a midfield diamond and has occasionally trialled a 4-3-3 – in either set-up, Hojbjerg looks likely to be stationed in a defensive midfield role following the departure of Victor Wanyama to Tottenham.

The Danish international has sometimes played further forward during his career, though, and could play on the side of a diamond, with neither Jordy Clasie or Oriol Romeu offering any real threat.

Standing at 6ft 1in, Højbjerg offers a strong presence in the middle of the park, and has good technical ability in terms of his passing, dribbling and finishing, particularly from long range. His positioning as a defensive midfield player is also impressive, and he registered an interception every 24 minutes for Schalke last season, better than Clasie (27.8), Wanyama (38) and Romeu (43.1). Of all four players, Romeu led the way for successful tackles last term with one every 30.2 minutes, ahead of Wanyama (36.2), Hojbjerg (38.6) and Clasie (42.9).

Hojbjerg certainly looks capable of filling the void left by Wanyama, then, and while he hardly carries a significant attacking threat, he did average a shot every 57.9 minutes last season, better than Romeu (61.6), Wanyama (84.5) and Clasie (113.4).

The former Bayern midfielder only managed a key pass every 182 minutes last term, though, mainly due to featuring in a deep-lying midfield position. Nonetheless, an 87.4% successful pass rate is indicative of his excellent distribution.

While a defensive midfield player wouldn’t normally be of huge interest for Fantasy managers, Hojbjerg’s price of 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) has brought him firmly onto our radars, with the Dane currently sat in 4.1% of squads.

He’s currently only second to West Brom’s Darren Fletcher (14.4%) for ownership in FPL among 4.5-priced midfielders, and, having impressed on his first start against FC Twente, could well establish a regular starting role at St Mary’s.

He’ll be competing with the likes of Clasie and Romeu for a place in Puel’s XI, while Steven Davis and James Ward-Prowse are slightly more attack-minded midfield players who could operate on the sides of a diamond.

Hojbjerg was on the bench for today’s friendly with FC Groningen and introduced at half-time. Both Clasie and Romeu were handed starts in the Saints’ engine room, with Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond also in the starting XI.

The Saints’ opening fixtures offer up some plum home ties (WAT, SUN, SWA, BUR) over the opening eight Gameweeks, though there’s no doubt that Dusan Tadic (7.5) and, to a lesser extent, Redmond (6.0) have a greater potential for attacking hauls.

Going on his output so far, Hojbjerg looks best utilised as a bench-warner initially until we get an idea of Southampton’s Fantasy prospects under their new manager. The youngest player ever to represent Bayern in the Bundesliga, there’s no denying the new boy has a touch of class and if Puel affords him the platform to flourish, we’ll be keeping a keen eye on his potential as the campaign unfolds.

How's this for a team going all out early with a WC after GW3 if necessary?

    Foster (Jaku)
    Shaw Bertrand* Souare (Fernandez, Lenihan)
    KDB*, Tadic, Ayew, Deulofeu* (Leko)
    Kun, Ibra, Gray

The trio with asterisks are players I'm tossing up with possibilities being:
    A) KDB, Deulofeu, Bertrand/Walker
    B) Hazard, Deulofeu, Azpi/Rose
    C) Mahrez, Eriksen, 4.5 DEF (Friend)

First draft after a 2 year absence from FPL so all thoughts will be appreciated! Cheers.

Far from poor! Could be improved upon.

I have a similar main 4 in midfield, but have a stronger second striker by having a 4.5M 5th mid. I've also spent less in defence.

        Like so...

        Heaton - Foster
        Fuchs - Stones - Friend - Koné - Smith
        Hazard - Mahrez - Ayew - Tadic - Capoue
        Agüero - Lukaku - Gray

I think drop feg to 4.5. Gray could be ok. You then have 7.5 I would go Benteke (if at palace) Carroll or Wilson , you could lose Benteke as an option and upgrade defence with the 1 mil spare

Thanks mate! that's helpful. I'm keeping an eye on Benteke or whoever gets the nod as the lone striker at Palace.

I will play 2 of Negredo, Gray, Feg at a time. There will be some 6.5 strikers/ 5.5 mids who will do well. I hope they are who i have now.

The reason i opted for TWO 6.5 strikers is there are not many good ones between 6.5 and 9.0 (for now). Tekke moving to Palace can change that tho.

Might be worth having Austin as one of your 6.5M strikers then. Have you seen how Saints and West Ham fixtures rotate?

            10 years, 1 month ago

I'm not aware of the good rotation. The problem is I don't know which one of Austin and Long will start. Thus Tadic as Saint cover. If you say Austin fine. I can get him by downgrading my DF incl. Azp (to Stones) and turn Tadic to Mahrez.

Check out the rotation. It's fantastic! Many don't like attacking rotation as good attacker will often pick up good points away from home. However, you do seem to be planning to rotate.

I can't offer you any guarantees on Austin unfortunately.

Make you right about the strikers, the 6.5 range is OK but risky and then there's nothing in between until you get to Lukaku.

Where's all the 8.5 strikers? They used to be key price point in the past.

Yes, risky but there are many 6.5'ers. We should know who are the ones after two games? They are not explosive however.

The only one I'm interested in is Gray simply because he's had a full press season, has scored goals (like he did in their real season) and has 3 home games in 4.

Everyone else has question marks, might be easier to just ignore that whole price point, build a sold team all over to get through the first 3 weeks and then wildcard in your real team when the Euro players return and the cheap ones show who is cutting it.

This is not a normal start to a season thanks to the Euros and players returning to pre season at different stages.

Yes, Euros exhaustion. Add unsettled players to the mix too.. latest being Kaku and Ayew? I'll try to keep the WC as long as possible. Most likely I will hold just one 6.5 striker. Can downgrade one or two of my midfielders to get a forward in form after a few games. Maybe Kaku, Kane.. We don't know.

It's very annoying as Kane, Lukaku, Costa, Giroud, Sturridge all have tricky fixtures to start or in Giroud's case might not even start, had they all had better GW1's then very few would even be looking at Zlatan and the 6.5 range.

It's only really Aguero, Zlatan and Vardy that jump out in GW1 from the premium range.

Morning lads. Pick one of these-

    A. Morgan, KdB, Tadic, Ayew, Ibra
    B. Walker , Hazard, Tadic, Ayew, Ibra
    C. Walker , KdB, Hazard, Mkhi, Austin

I will see few games first.

Well Traore could be decent option, cheap and will be starting if Costa leaves.

Yeah, probably right. It makes little sense that Everton would sell their two prize assets (Rom and Stones) immediately after getting new owners with deep pockets and a top new manager

    RMT Please (first draft)

    Mandanda - Foster
    Azpi - Shaw - Morgan - Evans - Souare
    Hazard - Redmond - Delofeou - Ayew - Hojbjerg
    Kun - Ibra - Rondon

    Any feedbacks are welcomed. Thanks.

I feel you are a little light in the midfield, Azpi to Terry? could free up some money to upgrade your mid.

Do you think Aina is a contender to start over Ivanovic, hes been looking class this pre season? could be value there

Fischer @ 5.5 very very tempting especially with the fixtures. Far better pick than Negredo imo.

    Hi DZers

I've been tinkering with my team and would like some objective comments if you can. I'm beginning to struggle seeing the wood from the trees.

I plan to wildcard in the International break between GW3 & 4, but if the team is flying, which it has never done before, I will not bother.

    Foster - Jak (if fit)
    Valencia - Stones- Schlupp - Friend - B Smith
    Ayew - KDB - Mahrez - Deulofeu - Højbjerg
    Kun - Ibra - Diamonde

    I intend to play 3-5-2 or 4-4-2

    Thanks for any help

Schlupp wont start, don't think Brad Smith will but that's ok if he's bench fodder, Diomande plays for the worst team in the league so I wouldn't rely on him for points, otherwise looks really good

I think Schlupp will end up at WBA, even if he doesn't want to. If that doesn't happen I will swap to a more suitable 5m defender. Diomande is my last choice sub, so just bench fodder for a few games.

        Thanks for the input..

3 defenders not nailed. Would scare me.you might get away with the 352 not the 442.

Yeah, I agree at the moment it may be the case. Luckily I have 5.5m and two 5m defenders, so if they don't look good in preseason or get the transfers I expect then ou they go to be replaced by nailed on starters.

It's difficult at this stage of the preseason. I see setting your team up is more about building around key players and then having enough funds to choose the best option for the others before GW1

        Thanks

Contrast between rmt posted here and TSB in general is huge. At least in terms of defence and mids. Maybe the 'casuals' are right on Payet. Not like he had a bad euros either - hardly mentioned here.

Fair enough. Also if Antonio was classified as defender he would have 50% ownership has to happen next year if he plays defence this year?

Not imo. 50% is something people only go for big name players like Aguero. Pretty sure quite a lot of people playing the game for fun won't even know about Antonio.

Do you think antonio worth a shot even if playing in defence. Probably not based on so many good mid options?
