Great Expectations

Having arrived at Southampton last summer with a reputation as a goal scoring defender, after netting nine times in two seasons at Celtic, Virgil van Dijk managed a respectable three strikes in 34 Premier League appearances as Saints secured a sixth place finish.

The Dutch international, who cost Southampton £13 million, impressed in his first season in England, forming a strong centre-back partnership with Jose Fonte, and, having settled at St. Mary’s, could be set for an even more productive campaign this time around.

The 25-year-old is an imposing figure, standing at six foot four inches tall, and, as is the case with the majority of Dutch footballers, is very strong technically, with the central defender confident when dribbling the ball, and also able to initiate attacks through his wide range of passing.

The fact that Van Dijk was handed a new six-year contract in May certainly illustrates the club’s faith in the former Groningen defender, so he’ll be expected to continue his development as a player over the coming years.

Key Factors

  • Van Dijk’s attacking statistics last season were pretty impressive across the board, finishing fifth among defenders for both penalty box touches (71), and shots on target (nine). He ended the campaign joint-eighth among defenders for total goal attempts, with 29, the same number as Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann, who netted five times in 2015/16. The Dutchman is particularly dominant in the air, having won 158 headers last term, 36 more than any other defender. His aerial presence should continue to be crucial at both ends of the pitch, then, and with Dusan Tadic looking nailed on under new Saints boss Claude Puel, Van Dijk should benefit from strong set-piece delivery in the final third. It’s worth noting he’s already found the back of the net during pre-season, scoring in Southampton’s 2-1 win against FC Twente.
  • Despite the changes in management, Southampton have registered 15, 15 and 12 clean sheets over the past three seasons, providing Fantasy managers with a reliable source of defensive returns. The early signs under Puel appear positive in that regard, having only conceded one goal in four matches thus far during pre-season, so Van Dijk should continue to offer a dual threat at either end of the pitch.
  • After finishing last season with 130 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), joint-tenth among defenders, Van Dijk has once again been valued at 5.5. That’s the same price as fellow Saints defenders Fonte and Ryan Bertrand, while Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina, who look set to battle it out for the right-back position once again, are available at 5.0 and 4.5 respectively. The Dutchman’s superior goal threat makes him the standout option, with his ability to shoot from long distance, be it from open play or a free-kick, also an added string to his bow. That’s reflected by the former Celtic man currently having an ownership of 11.2% in FPL, more than both Fonte (9%) and Bertrand (4.4%).
  • Southampton face three very appealing home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks (WAT, SUN, SWA), affording Puel the perfect opportunity to get off to a strong start at St Mary’s. Although that is somewhat offset by the fact they also travel to both Man United and Arsenal, Van Dijk’s goal threat means he’s still more than capable of prevailing across those tricky pair of road trips.
  • While Van Dijk offers plenty of appeal due to his attacking threat and potential clean sheet points, the Dutch international also flourishes when it comes to the Bonus Point System (BPS). He gained 16 bonus points last term, fifth among defenders, and finished fourth at the back for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), making him a particularly strong option for those plum home fixtures in which Southampton have historically thrived in.

Just to shed some light on things here boys, as in the past 2 days I've seen Lamela (7.0) be referred to as "A terrible FPL option" "Rubbish" "Not nailed on fully" "Poor"

Now, Lamela started off horrifically as a Spurs player, like the majority of the signings made with the Bale money excluding Eriksen of course.

However, last season he kicked on massively and was involved an awful lot in Spurs' attacking play, hence racking up 75 key passes last season.

Whoops didn't mean to click post.
As I was saying, he made more key passes than Sanchez, Silva, Hazard, and I'm pretty sure he got more assists also. He's had a great pre season, and he's 100% nailed along with Eriksen and Alli behind Kane. For the price, I don't see how he's "rubbish" seeing as everybody is raving about Delboy, who done absolutely nothing last season. Same with Mirallas. For only 0.5m less.

Agree. I'll be keeping an eye on Lamela although he won't be in my team from the start

Not very fair to include Hazard in that, as all of Chelsea were garbage. Silva got more assists and played about 600 minutes less. He did better than Sanchez in terms of assists, but Alexis scored 13 goals.

Now onto other points. Delboy did nothing, as in he played 1000 minutes less, got the same number of assist but scored 3 goals fewer? Mirallas (who I don't particularly like) also nearly matched Lamela's goals (1 less) in 1300 fewer minutes.

Put it this way, had Delboy or Mirallas played the same gametime as Lamela (and Delboy is likely to play much more this season) they would have spanked him.

It's very fair to include Hazard in it, yes he had a bad season but that doesn't exclude him from all comparisons. It was more a comparison of everybody having Hazard in their teams (including me to be fair) at a steep £10m rather than comparing quality of the players.

Just highlighting him as a decent punt and differential more than anything. 🙂

Not really though because we all know it to have been a bad season for Hazard, hence why everyone has him picked. Nothing wrong with highlighting him as a decent punt, but to say someone like Deulofeu did nothing is a stretch when, in reality, he outperformed Lamela given the minutes he had.

You don't get points for key passes though, to be fair he did have 9 assists and 5 goals last year but that was during a year when spurs scored an abnormal amount of goals by their standards

"when spurs scored an abnormal amount of goals by their standards"

Still, we're not sure if spurs will kick on from here, anything could happen. If they do then Lamela may be worth it its just I'd rather wait and see

I mean that could be said for all Spurs, even Kane.

So if you're not in that camp and do want one, then Lamela is a decent punt.

He's doing better than he started for sure, and he's turning into the player he was supposed to be, but at 1m cheaper than both Eriksen (on free kicks and corners with a propensity for shooting) and Alli (their main threat from the centre of the park) I and most others would go with the 'safer' more proven options.

Having Dembele in the team full stop improves Spurs as a whole. Offers much more solidity next to Dier than somebody like Mason or Carroll. Allows others to be more expressive. His forward runs create so much space for others too. Interesting to see how we'll adapt with Wanyama (a totally different player mind)

    I've got it sorted

    GW1
    Foster (cry)
Walker (eve) - Friend (STK) - Williams (bur) - Pieters (MID)
De Bruyne (SUN) - Mahrez (hul) - Ayew (bur)
    Ibra (C)(bou) - Aguero (VC)(SUN) - Gray (SWA)

    Jak - Evans - Fletcher/Leko - Barry - £0.0ITB

For GW2: swap KDB for Haz
    For GW3: move Ayew & Williams for Alli/Eriksen + £4.5 defender

Defence will be ok for the first 4-5 weeks before needing a transfer, Jakupovic will never play, Barry will never play, Fletcher/Leko will hardly ever play. Will flip flop between Kun and Ibra (C) until the deadline. 🙂

Foster = good keeper option especially for first 7 weeks
Fletcher = I will hardly play, could be any £4.5 really
Evans = Yeah I agree with you, I need to find another £4.5

re: having 2 defensive mids a good point but neither will play often, I'd pick another £4.5 for both. Had my eye on Capoue too but his fixtures are brutal so there's not much point.

I'd be ready to move Ibra pretty quick for Kane, Luka, Vardy if he's not performing, hopefully make a couple of £0.1 off him even.

        Thanks for the feedback!

    (Bottomed)

    Current draft. Explanations below.

    Foster, Jakupovic
    Shaw, Terry, Evans, Friend, Mee
    Hazard, Mahrez, Firmino, Alli, Capoue
    Aguero, Wilson, Gray

    * Originally had Foster/Heaton but feared benching points, plus save 0.5 with Jakupovic as permanent bench keeper.
    * Evans/Friend/Mee rotation in the first 20GWs gives 18 home fixtures, and only 1 fixture against last year's top 10 (WHM at home)
    * Admittedly unsure about Terry's gametime but cannot squeeze 0.5 for Azpilicueta
    * I like midfielders who play like forwards - Hazard, Mahrez, Firmino and Alli are all goalscorers who like to get into the box
    * Having 2x 6.5 strikers possibly a risk, but having Ibrahimovic/Kane upsets the balance too much, and too many question marks in the 9-9.5 range (Costa, Lukaku, Batshuayi, Rooney etc)
    * All 3 of my strikers are nailed on for their teams, and take penalties

    Criticisms very gratefully received.

Similar team to me, similar thought processes.

However I cannot justify leaving out Kane. He's very much worth the price tag and no other Spurs player can come close to covering his output

Like everything apart from JT. Can switch him to Zouma when he's fit if Chelsea don't get a CB I guess. Consider Fuchs, VVD

I've decided I'm just going to copy someone's on here to start with and then sort it out if it needs it.

Can't be @@rsed trying to work one out and anyway it's so much luck in the first few GW's.....

          😮

Probably Mkhitaryan (10.0m) as easier to downgrade to Martial (9.0m) if you got it wrong, rather than going other way (finding and extra 1.0m) unless keep 1.0m ITB?

Rather than "In most", I meant "I've seen more often". There's a growing tendency towards the 4.5 bench fodder going around now, whilst the other week it was more about a couple of 5.5's. I'm still undecided, and will remain undecided, probably until gameweek 5.

      Tadic & Gradel over Fischer
Bournemouth a more attacking side and Gradel offers more goal threat IMO
