Great Expectations

Having arrived at Southampton last summer with a reputation as a goal scoring defender, after netting nine times in two seasons at Celtic, Virgil van Dijk managed a respectable three strikes in 34 Premier League appearances as Saints secured a sixth place finish.

The Dutch international, who cost Southampton £13 million, impressed in his first season in England, forming a strong centre-back partnership with Jose Fonte, and, having settled at St. Mary’s, could be set for an even more productive campaign this time around.

The 25-year-old is an imposing figure, standing at six foot four inches tall, and, as is the case with the majority of Dutch footballers, is very strong technically, with the central defender confident when dribbling the ball, and also able to initiate attacks through his wide range of passing.

The fact that Van Dijk was handed a new six-year contract in May certainly illustrates the club’s faith in the former Groningen defender, so he’ll be expected to continue his development as a player over the coming years.

Key Factors

  • Van Dijk’s attacking statistics last season were pretty impressive across the board, finishing fifth among defenders for both penalty box touches (71), and shots on target (nine). He ended the campaign joint-eighth among defenders for total goal attempts, with 29, the same number as Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann, who netted five times in 2015/16. The Dutchman is particularly dominant in the air, having won 158 headers last term, 36 more than any other defender. His aerial presence should continue to be crucial at both ends of the pitch, then, and with Dusan Tadic looking nailed on under new Saints boss Claude Puel, Van Dijk should benefit from strong set-piece delivery in the final third. It’s worth noting he’s already found the back of the net during pre-season, scoring in Southampton’s 2-1 win against FC Twente.
  • Despite the changes in management, Southampton have registered 15, 15 and 12 clean sheets over the past three seasons, providing Fantasy managers with a reliable source of defensive returns. The early signs under Puel appear positive in that regard, having only conceded one goal in four matches thus far during pre-season, so Van Dijk should continue to offer a dual threat at either end of the pitch.
  • After finishing last season with 130 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), joint-tenth among defenders, Van Dijk has once again been valued at 5.5. That’s the same price as fellow Saints defenders Fonte and Ryan Bertrand, while Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina, who look set to battle it out for the right-back position once again, are available at 5.0 and 4.5 respectively. The Dutchman’s superior goal threat makes him the standout option, with his ability to shoot from long distance, be it from open play or a free-kick, also an added string to his bow. That’s reflected by the former Celtic man currently having an ownership of 11.2% in FPL, more than both Fonte (9%) and Bertrand (4.4%).
  • Southampton face three very appealing home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks (WAT, SUN, SWA), affording Puel the perfect opportunity to get off to a strong start at St Mary’s. Although that is somewhat offset by the fact they also travel to both Man United and Arsenal, Van Dijk’s goal threat means he’s still more than capable of prevailing across those tricky pair of road trips.
  • While Van Dijk offers plenty of appeal due to his attacking threat and potential clean sheet points, the Dutch international also flourishes when it comes to the Bonus Point System (BPS). He gained 16 bonus points last term, fifth among defenders, and finished fourth at the back for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), making him a particularly strong option for those plum home fixtures in which Southampton have historically thrived in.

I've been umming and ahhing over Ibra but let's face it there are no standout forward options above 6.5 unless some transfers happen. The fact that Ibra has the potential for some big hauls makes the decision that much easier.

    Jackpuvic, Heaton
    Friend, Pieter's, Daniels, VVD, Mcauley

    My argument for Firmino
    1) The man is fixture proof, he scored plenty of goals against the best teams last season.
    2) Fixtures, Arsenal- Kosc is tired and may not play and Gabriel will replace Mert, no proper centre back pairing and Arsenals midfield still isn't settled. He also plays Burnley who should be weak defensively and also Spurs who are a lot worse defensively when Dembele isn't playing, I expect Liverpool to outrun him.
    3) He plays for KLOPP who plays very attacking football and has been holding a very intense pre season, Liverpool have the capability to score against anyone.
    4) He is completly rested and did not play in any competition over the summer.
    5) His stats under Klopp were incredible and although most were at striker which he may play some time at.. He will also improve under KLOPP and his stats shiuld really improve. His stats were still good playing as a CAM.
6)He is nailed and will play IMO, KLOPP loves the man.
    7) Liverpools defence is weak so Liverpool will probably concede a lot so Liverpool will be involved in a lot of high scoring games.

    Thoughts?

He is pretty fixture proof, only issue is that even under Klopp last year, Liverpool were pretty average, those first 5/6 games could either be good or awful, can't really base their prospects based on pre season where its more about fitness than anything.

Not sure he's not one that can't wait until the WC.

Liverpools attack was NOT average under KLOPP, in fact it was very very good, although their defence is poor. Considering he has scored plenty against the big teams fixtures aren't a problem.

Completely agree with all of this and well said.

      However...

They fact remains that the still have to face two of last season's top three and a resilient, well organised Burnley side all away from home in the first three games of the season.

Taking any player, Firmino or not, is going to be a risk with those fixtures. Plus, Mane and Gino will undoubtably damage his output. He was the only consistent threat they offered until Sturridge turned up towards the end of the season. Now, the whole attack is full of talent.

The fact that when Dembele isn't playing they are considerably weaker plus Walker and Rose and Lloris will all be tired plus Vert is injured and Ald could be tired too.

Burnleys side is poor compared to last time and they haven't even came close to an attacking side like Klopps.

I believe he is nailed on but I'm not going over that again.

Certainly not disagreeing with you. I'm inclined to draft him in myself for exactly the same reasons and he could make us all look jigs with three great performances. I just think with Liverpool's midfield in its current state and the three away fixtures he might still not return a good enough point haul to justify risking 8.5. Klopp is pretty much my favourite manager. Want to work a Liverpool player in to my team badly for that reason alone. Mane could explode but 9.0 is a bit steep.

Do you not think Mikhitaryan has the potential to do a Firmino?

He also came to the PL with great stats from Germany and struggled to get to grips with the pace of the league for a few months, both are quality players but in fantasy we don't need to give them time to settle, we can pick them up when they have settled.

First time poster.....4th season of FPL about to start.

My current team, although I'm sure it will change before 13/8

    Foster/Jakupovic
    N.Taylor/Shaw/Bailly/Friend/B.Smith
    Mahrez/Ozil/Payet/Martial/Ibe
    Aguero/Wilson/Grabban

    100m spent

I know Ozil/Payet might not start GW1 but I can easily substitute Hazard/Ayew at the start.
I can play 4-5-1....3-5-2 or 4-4-2 depending on fixtures.
It will give me a terrible bench for auto subs but I have a lot of fluidity for transfers if players are injured or performing badly.
Any thoughts or comments from you old-hands would be appreciated.
    Thank you..........

Bailly not nailed, I reckon he'll start but could possibly be Jones partnering Smalling - a small risk but a risk nonetheless

          "Pretty nailed"

Isn't the whole point of someone being "nailed" is that they either are or they aren't haha

That's what I mean, he is very likely to play but he isn't "nailed"

Believe Utd paid around 30 million for Bailly, cant see him sitting on the bench after paying that kind of money.

Feeling pretty confident about this team:

    Jaku, Forster
    Fernandez, Shaw, Souaré, Evans, Walker
    Ayew, Tadic, Capoué, Deulofeu, Hazard
    Gray, Kun, Kane

    Only doubt still is Gray

I'm hoping he'll be Southamptons best striker. Too many headaches for me between Long and Austin. I'll happily take free goals and CSs.

Think it will change up depending on opposition. Fab will play too, expect a home game to Hull be different to away to City.

They'll most likely rotate between Fabregas, Matic and Kante.

Fabregas is one of the best long passers you would see, and Conte loves direct balls into striker's path. Playing Matic and Kante will kill the creativity in the center midfield and everything will need to go down from the wings.

Fabregas as the playmaker looks pretty solid as well.

    I got

    Hennessey/De Gea
Bellerin Van Djik Delaney Fuchs Fernandez

Eriksen De Bruyne Kante Bolaise Wilian (Tadic)

    Long Aguero Okazaki

Any thoughts ? Should i stay with Wilian or switch to Tadic

Ayew for the first two anyway. Not sure lamela will be an asset, always the order to be subbed, too many yellows and can't finish

I was on the Baines wagon from the moment the prices were released but now I really think it's a lost cause for 3 reasons:

    1) Defence - Everton's defence is dreadful and has still looked dreadful in preseason. Yes Koeman is a good defensive manager, but if you have a round peg it just won't go into a square hole.

    2) Price - you can get Terry/ Shaw/ vvD and so many better options that I believe will outscore Baines.

    3) Set pieces - preseason has suggested to us that Mirallas and Deulofeu are sharing free kicks and corners. Baines has walked away from free kicks throughout the last few preseason games. The only hope really is penalties, but you'd imagine Lukaku will be still on them

I can see the appeal with Everton's opening fixtures but there are more viable options imo

Yep he'd probably be my 4th choice at that price

        Ta,

My bench is what's currently annoying me, I have a feeling about Fischer GW1, but then it would mean benching Deulofeu or Gray, unless I benched Lamela...
