Great Expectations

Having arrived at Southampton last summer with a reputation as a goal scoring defender, after netting nine times in two seasons at Celtic, Virgil van Dijk managed a respectable three strikes in 34 Premier League appearances as Saints secured a sixth place finish.

The Dutch international, who cost Southampton £13 million, impressed in his first season in England, forming a strong centre-back partnership with Jose Fonte, and, having settled at St. Mary’s, could be set for an even more productive campaign this time around.

The 25-year-old is an imposing figure, standing at six foot four inches tall, and, as is the case with the majority of Dutch footballers, is very strong technically, with the central defender confident when dribbling the ball, and also able to initiate attacks through his wide range of passing.

The fact that Van Dijk was handed a new six-year contract in May certainly illustrates the club’s faith in the former Groningen defender, so he’ll be expected to continue his development as a player over the coming years.

Key Factors

  • Van Dijk’s attacking statistics last season were pretty impressive across the board, finishing fifth among defenders for both penalty box touches (71), and shots on target (nine). He ended the campaign joint-eighth among defenders for total goal attempts, with 29, the same number as Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann, who netted five times in 2015/16. The Dutchman is particularly dominant in the air, having won 158 headers last term, 36 more than any other defender. His aerial presence should continue to be crucial at both ends of the pitch, then, and with Dusan Tadic looking nailed on under new Saints boss Claude Puel, Van Dijk should benefit from strong set-piece delivery in the final third. It’s worth noting he’s already found the back of the net during pre-season, scoring in Southampton’s 2-1 win against FC Twente.
  • Despite the changes in management, Southampton have registered 15, 15 and 12 clean sheets over the past three seasons, providing Fantasy managers with a reliable source of defensive returns. The early signs under Puel appear positive in that regard, having only conceded one goal in four matches thus far during pre-season, so Van Dijk should continue to offer a dual threat at either end of the pitch.
  • After finishing last season with 130 points in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), joint-tenth among defenders, Van Dijk has once again been valued at 5.5. That’s the same price as fellow Saints defenders Fonte and Ryan Bertrand, while Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina, who look set to battle it out for the right-back position once again, are available at 5.0 and 4.5 respectively. The Dutchman’s superior goal threat makes him the standout option, with his ability to shoot from long distance, be it from open play or a free-kick, also an added string to his bow. That’s reflected by the former Celtic man currently having an ownership of 11.2% in FPL, more than both Fonte (9%) and Bertrand (4.4%).
  • Southampton face three very appealing home fixtures over the opening five Gameweeks (WAT, SUN, SWA), affording Puel the perfect opportunity to get off to a strong start at St Mary’s. Although that is somewhat offset by the fact they also travel to both Man United and Arsenal, Van Dijk’s goal threat means he’s still more than capable of prevailing across those tricky pair of road trips.
  • While Van Dijk offers plenty of appeal due to his attacking threat and potential clean sheet points, the Dutch international also flourishes when it comes to the Bonus Point System (BPS). He gained 16 bonus points last term, fifth among defenders, and finished fourth at the back for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI), making him a particularly strong option for those plum home fixtures in which Southampton have historically thrived in.

Cheers! Tarko is Tarkowski from Burnley who I think is 1st choice, have seen him in a few RMT's. Pieters v Wolly seems v close, so just went Wolly from various opinions on here.

Tarkowski is a pretty solid defender and should be starting.

I remember watching him play at Oldham before he moved to Brentford and I always rated him.

Scores the occasional goal as well!

      Good pick, he should play.

RMT out of 10. Not sure on a few players but, let's see

    Courtois - Jakupovic
    Shaw - Morgan - Cedric/Stones - Smith - Lenihan
    Hazard - Mahrez - Lamela - Deulofeu - Leko
    Aguero - Lukaku - Origi

    Few things I'm considering:
    - Drop Origi to 4.5, upgrade Lukaku to Ibrahimovic, and just play with low scoring 4.5mid
    - Downgrade Lukaku to Musa, upgrade Lamela to Firmino

    Advice is much appreciated.

Boys and girls... Are you ready for the best FPL planning tool ever?? (probably)

Some of you may have used my DGW Planner last year. Well I've evolved this and I thought I'd share it with you guys...

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NWy4ipf4tnJjawxAh4W-Z9IRyV5g2kpDv2ENLf4x2qk/edit?usp=sharing

A few notes on what you can do with it.

    Team Planner
∙ Populate your chosen players and the respective team they play for
∙ The next 5 fixtures will be shown for your squad
∙ In order to plan subsequent transfers you can change players in future weeks and their opponents will be updated
∙ Below the GW1 fixtures there is a breakdown of the team in a standard RMT format, which can easily be copied and pasted to the site
∙ If you edit the titles in row 3 to change the GW, the correct fixtures for that week will be populated

    Ticker
∙ You can enter the Home and Away fixture difficulty for each team, currently defaulting to the number on FFS
∙ The Ticker will automatically colour code the difficulty of the fixtures (21 different levels)

Any questions or problems with it, just let me know.

    Hope you find it helpful.

If it is wrong the FFS Season Ticker is also wrong.

        I have:

        MCI v STK in GW2
        TOT v STK in GW4

Ahhhhh, is it the difference in labelling between STK and STO that's causing the confusion? FPL uses STK.

With the influx of great 4.5m's this year there are alot of choices to consider.

The most popular choices include Friend, Evans, McAuley, Fernandez, Pieters and Souare.

I think out of these Friend is a must, thats why I have him. With Terry, Shaw, Walker, Foster & Jaku in my defence, that leaves Pieters, Souare, Fernandez/Taylor.

Who out of these do you think is the best?

Pieters. But why on earth is a defender from a promoted team a 'must'?!

Figured. Already have him and Stoke always look decently defensive every season.

Friend is nailed on when fully fit, and is an attacking fullback who'll be involved in goals through assists. I mean, why not?

Hey guys! This is for a draft league, would you trade out Eriksen for Firmino? This would be for the full season (I think Eriksen starts a few more games than Firmino).

Keep in mind that I already own Sturridge, so it would be a double up (if Sturridge stays fit).

    Cheers!

Sure Firmino is explosive and more attacking, but Eriksen has consistently earned high points every season i.e. he is a long term investment that'll be good if you can't switch one player out. He even got higher points than Firmino this season.

True, but Firmino was injured at the start and under Klopp was a different beast altogether.

            Plus, they don't have Europe.

True. Unpredictable over all I guess. It's close to gambling who's going to win the PL, there's a lot of different factors.

Guys, why the no Charlie Austin love?

Good chance of penalties, especially if Tadic is not on the pitch.
Natural goal scorer, and will get way more chances than at QPR.
Not as flexible as long (a good thing?...) meaning he will play more centrally.
    Fresh from no summer football.
    Scoring in pre season.

Or is everyone on Long because he has more chance of playing?

A lot don't think he'll start. I'd monitor the next 2 Friendlies this week and see what you think.

True. Seems to have played a lot on this pre season (not necessarily a great indicator). Or at least a lot more than Long.

He's in my team at the moment but if these 2 games don't go well starting wise I'll look elsewhere. Too risky but I'm sure he'll nail it eventually.

So really not much chance of penalties as Tadic will be playing every game? Tadic is first choice so not sure how you work out that he has a good chance of penalties, if any of the 2 will be subbed early it will be Austin with his injury record so i don't even think think Austin will have a chance to take 1 then.

People need to stop skewing facts in order to make somethings sound more appealing.. it's only going to end badly.

Now, in saying that, if Austin can nail down a starting spot he will be a great option but no one knows for sure if he will be nailed on, we just need to wait and see.

If you look at Tadics time played on the pitch he has previously got subbed a lot. Without Tadic and Austin together on the pitch we will never know but Austins penalty record is outstanding! Tadic indifferent.

Tadics minutes were not great either.

        1. The Rock
          • 16 Years

Yeah he did get subbed a lot but i think that was more Koeman, new manager in now and Mane gone so Tadic will be the main man so can't really see him getting subbed as early as he use to?

Where as Austin is injury prone and there's other good strikers at the club (Long & Jay Rod) so i think he will be subbed most games.

You're right though, perhaps there is a chance Austin will be on pens if he's going to be a starter.. although i don't think Tadic will be too happy about that!

Certainly is a wait and see situation though.

How would you shave off 0.5m from this team?

Really happy with the front 7

    Foster (Jaku)
    Terry Morgan Friend (McAuley/Kone, 4m)
    Hazard Mahrez Alli Tadic Townsend
    Kun Rooney (Diomande)

Thinking Townsend to Fischer, which will let me upgrade a 4.5 def to a 5.

AGGGHH... Just trying to reboot my team after the summer off. Can't log in to my "son's team". As he's only 4 and has no email address, I used a variant of my normal email address for the login. Appears to have been pruned by FPL. Anyone else suffered from this, have any solutions? Password reset and all that isn't working.
He's got 3 years of playing history back to age zero (and three top 100k finishes, which isn't bad for a toddler), so don't want to lose this.
