Our series of summer articles, focussing on Fantasy assets who underperformed in the previous season, gets underway with a look at Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

In spite of a hugely disappointing 2015/16 campaign, there’s no disputing the winger’s position as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) royalty.

Year on year, the Blues midfielder had upped his output after arriving at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2012/13 season – totals of 190, 202 and 233 points were indicative of his spot as one of the most explosive, and reliable, options for our five-man midfields.

Until last season.

Hampered by a hip problem, Hazard struggled for consistency of both output and pitch time.

The Belgian netted just once in the first 34 matches – courtesy of a deflected effort against Arsenal in Gameweek 6 – and toppled off our radars as the Blues’ title defence fell to pieces, ultimately leading to the dismissal of Jose Mourinho.

Although the arrival of Guus Hiddink helped steady the ship and transformed the likes of Willian as a viable route into the Chelsea midfield, Hazard failed to find his best form until the tail end of the season.

Four goals in the final five fixtures was too little, too late, though served a timely reminder of his talents as we headed into the close-season.

Delving into the data, Hazard’s creativity more or less stayed the same last term. Despite earning just five FPL assists, an average of 35.3 minutes per key pass was more or less identical to his 2014/15 numbers, where he teed up a team-mate every 35.6 minutes and created more chances (99) than any player in the top-flight.

The Belgian’s drop in goal threat was another matter altogether. Second only to Alexis Sanchez in midfield when in came to finding the net in 2014/15 (14 strikes to 16), he produced an effort every 45.2 minutes in Chelsea’s title-winning campaign.

Last time around, Hazard fired an attempt every 64.8 minutes over his 31 appearances (25 starts) all season. Managing just 14 shots on target over the entire campaign, it’s fair to say that the winger has significant room for improvement as the Blues look to regroup under new manager Antonio Conte.

The Prospects

Having dropped in price to 10.0 in FPL, there’s no doubt that Hazard looks an enticing option for the upcoming campaign.

With Diego Costa seemingly edging towards the exit door and Michy Batshuayi settling into his new surrounds, the winger has already claimed 12% ownership – making him the tenth most popular midfielder to date.

Certainly, the Belgian could hardly have asked for a better start to life under Conte at the weekend.

Emerging from the bench to score twice in a half-hour cameo against Real Madrid, he was intriguingly handed a role through the middle in the new manager’s 4-2-4 formation and, according to the Italian, it’s a spot he could take up in the campaign ahead:

“Eden Hazard played 30 minutes and he is recovering a good shape. I like him in this position, like a forward, and he can be a good solution for us. Also playing as a winger. To play as a second forward he must improve his shape but he is working and he knows his shape can a lot in the same way as the other players.”

Clearly, Hazard’s appeal would merely be strengthened if he’s handed a more central role next time out. As it is, though, the Belgian’s history suggests he’ll be well worth the outlay even if he reprises his left flank berth, though Conte’s decision to move to two up front could force a reassessment of his side’s attack.

The Blues have mainly utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation during Hazard’s time at the club and if Conte decides on two centre forwards, the likes of Batshuayi – at a price of 9.0 – could be promoted in our thinking. The new striker racked up 17 goals and nine assists for a Marseille outfit that finished just nine points clear of the drop zone last season and will look more assured of minutes if Costa departs.

Conte’s choice of number one spot-kick taker could sway opinion. Hazard was uncharacteristically poor from penalties last season but his previous record may well persuade the new manager to name him as first-choice.

This would also heighten his appeal when compared to other premium priced midfielders – at present, no other option in the centre of the park costing 9.5 and over is first-choice for spot-kicks at their respective club.

Although he returned late to training due to Belgium’s Euro 2016 progress, Hazard is hoping to start against AC Milan in midweek and is confident he’ll be ready in time for the Gameweek 1 trip to West Ham in a fortnight’s time.

Having served up 37 goals and 36 assists in the three seasons prior to the last one, there’s a hope that 2015/16 will be no more than an anomaly in Hazard’s Fantasy career.

For Conte, the upside of last year’s disastrous title defence means that Chelsea have no European matches on their agenda, allowing the new manager to focus fully on domestic matters.

With rest and rotation a non-factor, then, the omens are looking good that Hazard can rediscover his spark and offer us the option of a fixture-proof, big-hitter once again.

Thanks for the link. 4-2-4 instantly brings to mind Brazil 1970. Maybe a better way to put it would be that I don't see a defensive-minded coach like Conte sticking with such a seemingly cavalier approach for long

          1. Zasa
            • 12 Years
            9 years, 11 months ago

I can see the reasoning, Pete, as you said Conte likes to emphasize in a sturdy defense. Yet, the 4-2-4 system Conte has implemented is very fluid & transitions with ease from offense to defense. The Conte defensive touch is very notable now that players are getting more accustomed to the formation. We've still yet to
see Costa, Batshuayi, Hazard & William in the same lineup along with Kante, so the roles may change a bit, but nonetheless.

The 424 shape is a fluid system, that can transition to various forms in defense. In the friendly vs Liverpool last week, when Chelsea would lose possession & on the backfoot it transitioned into a 541. Here RLC was the sole man up top, applying pressure to the CB's, with a very narrow midfield press of four behind him. On the deep flanks, Aina tucked in as a RCB almost, & Willian would drop deeper covering the RB spot. Then, Traore would would push back on the right, in line with the midfield four. Meanwhile on the left-flank, Moses & Azpi both applied a high intensity press.

This formation in defense & when out of possession plays similarly to what Conte implemented with Juve by the way, there are definitely parallels here:

            http://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/2016/5/22/11739446/watch-antonio-contes-3-3-4-system-explained

Then when in possession & in attack, there was clear front four sharing the same line, with Willian playing the furthest out relieving the congested play in the box. Azpi & Aina would both give surmountable width in the flanks as well in attacking, many times showing a 2 at the back. Once again proving how much Conte needs good dynamic FB's that compliment each other well, one more defensive-minded FB tucking in & Aina on the right playing a little more attacking like Willian. Very much like his Lichsteiner & Asamoah pairing.

Again, this is a fluid formation, that transition very smoothly from defense to offense & when in possession it's very clearly a four in the front with the forwards operating in the same line. Bar Willian who'll be on the diagonal run having a deeper link with the midfield (still the same line). You could say it's like Iniesta's role in Pep's 4-2-4 I linked above.

I'd like to also point out how much I'd like to see Hazard played on the left as opposed to a second striker. I think he'll benefit the most from having two strikers up top as it gives him a greater amount of space to work with. He'll be facing many more one-one-one encounters with the FB's as opposed to down the middle where both CB's will be busy marking the two strikers. More than likely having to resort to man marking across the backline leaving ample opportunity for Hazard to find open space to run in behind. Not to mention Azpi helping out by overlapping & taking the second man out of Hazard's way, etc. he won't have that luxury up top, especially when playing narrow formations like a 4231 or 4312,

Wow. Great detail. I'm interested to see how it works out for them. So many teams playing 4-2-3-1. Where does Fabregas fit into this system? As one of the 2 DMs alongside Kante or further forward?

I'd assume so, yup. We've yet to see him partnered up with Kante though, & I have my doubts with how he'll fare in a two-man midfield that isn't as narrow as Mou's 4231. Two big reasons for Conte transitioning from his 4-2-4 (which he played with Siena & Bari) to the 334 early on with Juve was because of Pirlo & Vidal.

With Pirlo in 4-2-4 or any two-man midfield, he'd get run over & have little room to operate & dictate the midfield. It was the 334 that got the best out of the midfield & Pirlo for that matter. With a triple CB pairing, Pirlo had way more outlets to pass to as a regista, way less pressure on the ball. Plus he had Marchisio, Vidal &/or Pogba right in front to boot & would rapidly close down on anyone when there was a dispossession in central midfield.

Suddenly up against a two-striker system who pressed high, Pirlo could navigate effortlessly & had the option to play deeper in between the three CB's, plus he wasn't as encumbered with defensive duties. As opposed to the 4atb system where it was very easy to get over-run in midfield when Pirlo was dispossessed & suddenly you're on a 3v4 in midfield on the break. Not to mention being reliant on Pirlo to break the counter & have the pace to keep up.

Which is where I now see the similarity with Fàbregas. Can Conte rely on him defensively in a 4-2-4? Chelsea don't currently have the ball-playing CB's for him to comfortably play off of IMO, but I guess they're decent enough on the ball to relieve pressure when needed. I feel like Fàbregas creativity is needed centrally, as the chief creators will likely be on the wings (Hazard & Willian), assuming Hazard's proffered on the wing by Conte. Kante doesn't exactly excel in a variety of passes (eg lobbed balls, long balls, etc), that's never been his forte. Nor Matic for that matter, but he's definitely more capable in that aspect.

Which leads me to speculate that Fàbregas could be the option in easier home games & vs tough, narrow teams he'll deploy a more defensive-minded midfield two. Just my opinion though, but if that match vs Real Madrid - where Matic & Oscar were paired up in the first half - the other day is an indication of how Fàbregas may fare...then it doesn't bode well, in my view. Matic & Oscar were decimated in midfield, completely. They got scored on three times in dominant fashion & Chelsea only put up a respectable score when Zidane opted to out his teenage XI.

I hope to see a Kante & Fàbregas midfield pairing before the season begins to give this an accurate/fair assessment.

if it is possible to play 424 then Kante is the man to play in that formation

will be interesting this season as perhaps 3 at the back is going to become more popular too (or 5 at the back depending on which way you look at it)

Good point in the Hazard article about penalties. It will be interesting to see who takes their first one

Pretty much hinges on wether I have him or not.

Hazard has never been a heavy scorer and if hot on penalties he's overpriced.

If you can find it yes. Not just in an attacking sense but he is 100% nailed throughout the season whereas terry faces competition once zouma is fit

Yep. No doubt he will be a more consistent starter

    1) Answer a few questions so as not to arouse suspicion.

    2) Wait for someone with a top 1k history to post their team.

    3) Steal said team, change the 4.5 mid to someone else so as to avoid plagiarism accusations.

    4) Have a crap start and wildcard GW3

    5) Repeat from the top.

So, dont want an RMT but wanted to get back in the swing of it (I know - no Grav, no reply), but here it is.

    SPOILER ALERT

The picture for article at the top shows an elated Eden hazard celebrating a beautiful brace with a rather dejected looking firmino in the background. It's a sign of things to come.
